Dirt Bike Handguard

1954 Simonov SKS -- left side handguard, forestock
That is a vintage 1960's Chinese military 'Type 56' gas tube/handguard. I refinished it using the same technique as my birch laminate stock: carefully stripped the original shellac finish and applied 5 to 6 layers of tung oil. The colour match to the rest of the stock is excellent (better than the original birch handguard), and is a very high quality piece. Who would have thought that Chu-wood was so nice!
The gas cylinder fit perfectly with almost no filing required. The fit is snug, but not overly-tight. Remember, this is a vintage 1960's Chinese military SKS gas tube/handguard made on the same Soviet-era machinery as the 1949-1956 Tula arsenal SKS's. I cannot speak on the fitment of the lower-grade commercial Chinese SKS units.
Contrary to popular belief, Chu-wood is not much softer than regular Russian arctic birch. Now arctic birch laminate is a different story, as it is MUCH harder and more durable.

Lean and mean as a dirt bike should be! The standard KTM digital panel is all she comes with. I'll be ading a GPS and mount plus ProBend handguard bars and a riser...maybe even heated grips but thats pushing it on a dirt bike! ;^)
