Further information - Bamboo Avenue
Bamboo Avenue is also known as Holland Bamboo as it was planted by owners of Holland estate, a sugar estate which once belonged to John Gladstone (1764-1851), merchant, politician and father of William Gladstone ( 1809-1898), a British Prime Minister.
Bamboo is regarded as the fastest growing plant in the world and is used in many ways in Jamaica. The species of bamboo grown in Bamboo Avenue is Bambusa vulgaris, which originated in Haiti and is the largest species planted in Jamaica. It is exploited as construction material, including making pig sties and animal enclosures and providing wattle for homes and kitchens, making baskets, furniture and screens. Bamboo root provides fodder for animals in times of drought, holds soil together in conservation work. Bamboo joints are used to carry water and as planters, and carved and decorated to make ornaments. Musical instruments such as the Benta, Bamboo Tamboo and the Bamboo Saxaphone are made from bamboo. Bamboo leaves, boiled with Guinea Grass and mixed with white rum, was used as a folk medicine remedy to treat malaria and other fevers.

Bayog Bamboo

Bayog Bamboo

There are four main types found in the Philippines:

Bayog (Bambusa Blumeana variety Luzonensis) has the same diameter as kawayan tinik but with thicker walls and is used for the superstructure of buildings and homes. Bayog often have curved culms and may be used for furniture for a desired effect. Bayog is slightly thorny and grows in the lowlands.

Kawayan Tinik (Bambusa Blumeana) is of the same diameter but with thinner walls and is used for secondary components of a structure such as rafters and flooring. It may also be used for furniture. The Ilocano term for ‘tinik’ is ‘siitan,’ which literally means ‘thorn’

Bolo is a very thin bamboo that grows in the midlands, it can be planted by seed or offset, and is for ‘sawali’ (traditional woven wall)

Benguet / Chinese Bamboo (Desdroca Lamus Aspen) is imported but now grows throughout the Philippines and is used for room dividers or similar applications.

Some advantages of bamboo include low weight (ease of transport / handling), unusual strength, low cost, sustainability (grows rapidly and abundantly).
