Remembering Jim Stephens- SPD#39

Remembering Jim Stephens- SPD#39

"There is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worthy doing as simply messing about in boats." Such are the words taken from "Ratty" in "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame.
I came across one of the boats that Jim Stephens was responsible for building several years ago beside a storage building near the high school boat house. Mr. Stephens had a love of woodworking and built furniture for his home. He also built more than 100 dulcimers and 10 classical guitars. He conducted a boat building workshop for 11 summers at the Ohio River Museum. Known as the ‘River Watcher', he also wrote a monthly column for The Marietta Times called “On The River.”
Mr Stephens retired from Marietta College in 1985 after more than 20 years as the Director of Financial Aid, and passed away after a brief illness on May 21, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was very good to me and my family and he is sadly missed, as I think of his kindness, as I walk along the same paths along the river that he once did.
