Fine Dining Table Settings
- (Dining Tables) The first dining tables of which survivors remain are the type known as refectory tables. They are made usually of oak, and one of the earliest, at Penshurst Place in Kent, has a typical thick top of joined planks supported on three separate trestles.
- A table is a type of furniture comprising an open, flat surface supported by a base or legs. It may be used to hold articles such as food or papers at a convenient or comfortable height when sitting, and is therefore often used in conjunction with chairs.

Globalization Project 1
I interpreted my original image as a strikingly literal representation of the "world on the platter" as a result of 21st century globalization. According to the Levin Institute reading, this corresponds to the interconnectedness of the world as it relates to globalization, mainly through international interaction and trade. The world is literally on a platter for people, corporations or nations as a result of a global trend toward globalization. What struck me the most about the initial image, though, was how the world was displayed. The wine glass, napkin and decorative food all evoke images of fine dining, which seems to imply that globalization caters toward the elite rather than the world as a whole. It seemed like an idealized and optimistic view of globalization, even possibly sarcastic. Though globalization is often presented with a fancy table setting, it has a much less glamorous side, too.
When re-interpreting the image, I thought of how this world would be dished up when it was served. Yes, globalization serves up the world, but at what cost? As a result of the distribution of economies in relation to globalization, we have clear-cut high, middle and low class groups, represented by the different quadrants. Each quadrant is an equal size and shape and appears equal at first glance, but the contents are very different. The "globalization" quadrant (the original image in the upper left corner) is only the mask, and the real globalization class dishes are shown behind the mask, in the other three quadrants. By keeping the initial square in tact, I wanted to show the front of globalization ("the world in a platter") in comparison to reality. The inequality in each quadrant/class is shown through the table settings and the food on the plate. Though the image represents a unified view of globalization, it appears more fragmented and unequal the closer you look, much like the trend of globalization itself.
