Njene skladne note probudile su moju dušu. Oslobodile je okova. Raširila je moja krila i ja sam poletjela. Kroz hladnu noć, nošena vjetrom.
Odu radosti (Ode “An die Freunde) napisao je 1785. njemački pjesnik Friedrich Schiller, a otpjevana je u Beethovenovoj 9. simfoniji. 1972. Vijeće Europe ju je preuzelo za Himnu Europe, a 2003. Europska unija izabrala je Beethovenovu muziku kao Himnu Europske unije.Beethovenova tema je podloga I Kršćanske himne (Himne radosti) koju je napisao 1908. Henry van Dyke.
