Edna broods over yet another hard day’s work after her hubby arrives back from collecting recyclable plastics off the streets. It was tough work for her as a young girl scavenging off the rubbish tip (seen at far right in the black & white picture below from 1994), but even now, after the tip was closed down seven years ago, the work is still heavy going roaming the streets with a hand-drawn cart for collecting recyclable materials, of which prices have fallen considerably due to the world economic crisis that we all complain about. Plastics that were bringing in almost 10 cents a kilo before the crisis, are now only worth 3 cents. You need to fill a lot of those big bags to make a living, if one can call it that! But who are they to choose...? Edna still dreams that one day she will have better living conditions so that her three children can come back home from the shelter they have been living in these last five years, but the courts won't free them as long as there are no basic amenities like running water and a bathroom. None of the shacks here have that luxury. At 3 cents a kilo, there is barely enough to keep oneself alive..............
