Liverpool - the overhead railway. And some interesting facts.
The Liverpool Overhead Railway was the world's first electrically-operated overhead railway. It ran close to the River Mersey, following the line of Liverpool Docks.
It was opened in 1893 by the Marquis of Salisbury and finally closed in 1956. Electric traction was chosen to avoid sparks from the burning coal of steam power igniting nearby cargo.
The railway was the first in the world to use automatic signalling and electric signal lights. Another first was that the railway was double-decked along a lot of its length with freight trains running underneath the passenger deck.
Special advanced light-weight passenger cars were designed with each having its own electric motor. They were therefore the world's first light rail trains, and the first EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trains, needing no locomotive to haul them.
The railway was known as the Dockers' Umbrella because the track bed on the railway was totally enclosed.
During WW2, the railway suffered extensively from bomb damage.
The railway was carried mainly on iron viaducts, with a corrugated iron decking, onto which the tracks were laid. As such, it was vulnerable to corrosion. Surveys in the mid 50's revealed that extensive repairs were required which the Liverpool Overhead Railway Company could not afford. Accordingly the company went into liquidation, and despite considerable protest, the line was closed on the evening of the 30th. December 1956.
