Cat Versus Human

Cat Versus Human

Yasmine Surovec began sketching her clever and sarcastic Cat Versus Human cartoons as a way to relax and unwind. Soon, her popular blog at catversushuman.blogspot.com began receiving as many as 12,000 hits per day, with a number of posts going viral and appearing on popular Web sites such as The Huffington Post and I Can Has Cheezburger. Now, a selection of 100 Cat Versus Human strips--many never previously published--can be found inside this inaugural collection of Cat Versus Human.
Proud owners of Felis domesticus will instantly recognize Surovec's keen insights into cat behavior and all of the characteristic intricacies of the cat-human relationship, such as the allure of an empty cardboard box trumping an expensive battery-operated toy or how a cat's favorite nap spot might as easily be inside a litter box, on top of clean laundry, or directly on top of a human face. Cat Versus Human also encourages an affectionate look at your once-was-in-mint-condition midcentury modern sofa that is now being unstuffed one cat claw at a time.

CHiPs: The Complete First Season

CHiPs: The Complete First Season

Where the rubber meets the road and the bad guys meet the badge -- that's where you'll find California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers Jon (Larry Wilcox) and Ponch (Erik Estrada). Set in the sun-drenched sprawl of Los Angeles, CHiPs combines action, heroics and fun in 22 Season One episodes whose event-packed storylines range from freeway gridlock (let's use a circus elephant to tow that broken-axled truck!) to wild roadway pursuits (who's that beautiful woman lead-footing a Rolls Royce?), from spilled onions (crying time, fellas) to pure venom (an overturned van loaded with...sssnakes!). Attention all units: Report now for arresting entertainment!
DVD Features:
Introduction:Introduction and Trivai Tidbits with Erik Estrada on select episodes.
Introduction:Introduction and Trivia Facts on select episodes by Erik Estrada.

Featurette:The Ride Out of Spanish Harlem: A Retrospective Featurette with Erik Estrada
Introduction:Introduction and Trivia Facts on select episodes by Erik Estrada.

Country boy Larry Wilcox got first billing, but Erik Estrada was the breakaway star of CHiPs, the popular late 1970s show about California highway patrolmen. With his blindingly white teeth, tight shirts, tighter pants, and exquisite '70s hair (which always emerged from under his helmet perfectly coifed), Estrada transformed his struggling career of playing hoodlums into becoming one of television's first Latino heroes--Frank "Ponch" Poncharello--and a skyrocketing sex symbol as well. CHiPs is basically Adam-12 on motorcycles. Ponch may have been a hothead, but there's not a hint that these cops are anything but perfectly upright and earnest in their duties--a far cry from The Shield or The Wire! Ponch and Jon Baker (Wilcox) cruise all over the southern California freeway system, grappling with car thieves, clearing away overturned trucks, and pulling beautiful girls out of car accidents. Every episode has at least one high-speed chase and just about every episode features Ponch hitting on a woman with gloriously feathered hair; watching episode after episode may feel a bit repetitive, but there's no denying that the stories are efficiently laid out and crisply executed. Foiling crime and rescuing lost dogs was the show's meat and potatoes, but the dessert was preposterousness like Ponch competing with a squad of middle-aged housewives on a game show or chasing after spilled chickens. The extras on CHiPs: The Complete First Season are meager, but many episodes feature introductions by Estrada, who's gained some weight but lost none of his cocksure charm. --Bret Fetzer

The little holes in the floor were there since it was the epoxy was laid. They were air bubbles that gradually chipped and became large holes in the epoxy finish.

Since the epoxy was laid, the surface finish was in bad shape and did not hold up well, especially since it was laid prior to construction completion.

CHiPs: The Complete Second Season

Can’t drive 55? There’s a ticket with your name on it – sign here, please. Just jumped three freeway lanes and endangered everyone in your path? Pull it over, pal, and dig out that license and registration. California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers Jon Baker and Francis "Ponch" Poncherello are on patrol. Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox return as Ponch and Jon, and the action and fun are ready to roll in 22 road- ripping episodes. Also returning: Robert Pine as amiable Sgt. Getraer. Strap on helmets and goggles for a deadly chain-reaction crash, the appearance of a nettlesome TV-news crew, Ponch’s disco dancing, Halloween patrol and a caped biker daredevil. Remember: safety first. And always signal before turning.

CHiPs returned with even more spectacular car crashes and more cute girls for Ponch (Erik Estrada) to charm. The series really hit its stride in this second season (aired in 1978 and '79), balancing nerve-tingling stunts with human drama and whimsical escapades. On the high-tension side, you have a school bus that careens out of control and Jon (Larry Wilcox) has to jump on the roof to rescue the kids inside; trucks jackknife across the highway, causing multiple pileups; an ambulance overturns, trapping a girl in an iron lung; an investigation of dirt-bike vandals leads to angel dust dealers. Then, to lighten things up, Ponch gets a boa constrictor wrapped around his leg and has to help out a team of stranded cheerleaders. But more than anything, this second season was a showcase for Estrada's easy, perfect-for-television charisma. Not only was he handsome and cocky, he could be surprisingly gentle and compassionate, as when he rescued a suicidal woman about to lose her home. Wilcox, even at his best, never seemed fully comfortable in his role, but Estrada radiated the kind of relaxed pleasure that invites the audience's adoration. There were certainly silly moments (the Supercycle! A tiger in a deli mart! Ponch and Jon help a woman give birth in a disco!) and the increase in cars bursting into flame stretches credulity, but most of CHiPs stays reasonably down-to-earth and is all the more enjoyable for it. In fact, the low-key cinematography, without a lot of frantic editing, often makes the car crashes all the more vivid and jolting. This season also introduced more supporting characters, including the first significant female officer on the show, Sindy Cahill (played by the charming Brianne Leary). The boxed set features only one extra, a promotional featurette about the real California Highway Patrol, who love the show about as much as the show loves them--though the real cops' hair is decidedly less fluffy. --Bret Fetzer

After the logs were dry we applied two coats of Sashco Capture (Sequoia) log home finish. In between coats we applied caulking in any checks 1/4" or larger. We used Conceal caulking (Santa Fe Trail) for this project. We then applied the final clear coat to protect the caulking and logs from harmful UV damage.

How to build handcrafted, scribe-fit log home walls from the master teacher and builder Robert W. Chambers. Chainsaw and hand-tool techniques are demonstrated. Animations are used to teach log building fundamentals. Saddle notches and long-grooves (laterals) are scribed and cut. State of the art techniques for doing it yourself -- Building your own log home. These DVDs are not about milled, factory-made, manufactured log kits. Instead, Chambers teaches the handcrafted methods using naturally-shaped logs that are fitted tightly to each other without gaps and without chinking. Chambers shows how to use a scriber to trace the contours of one log onto the other. Robert W. Chambers has been building log homes since 1983, teaching log home construction since 1985, and is author of the best-selling book -- the Log Construction Manual, and the maker of the ChambersScriber tool -- both his book and scriber are for sale at Amazon.

Xynole installation

Xynole installation

One way (and perhaps the smart way) to laminate Xynole to the hull:

Day 1- laminate the topsides. Day 2- unroll the Xynole onto the bottom panels and laminate them.

Always the adventurer, I decided to cover the entire hull with Xynole and do the entire lamination in one day though working alone. One advantage of doing it all together is a good chemical bond on the bottom and topside seams.

The 60 degree temps made it possible for me to not use the Raka epoxy hand pumps and instead use three large plastic cups to measure out the epoxy. I filled two cups with resin and one with slow hardener. This method worked error free for me as I required three cups filled and staring at me before I added the hardner and resin together. For each batch, I carefully scrapped out the resin/hardner from the measuring cups to keep the mixture portions correct. All applied epoxy kicked off normally on the hull so my method worked well.

I ended up with epoxy batches probably around 3/4 quart. I mixed each batch about three minutes and either immediately dumped it onto the bottom panels or in a paint roller tray. My first epoxy pour was started midship on a bottom panel and I worked towards the stem pushing out winkles and using the squeegee to spread the epoxy to prevent excess in a particular area.. Yup, you use a lot of epoxy. I then returned midship and worked towards the stern. I used a roller on the topsides to apply the epoxy and then the squeegee to work out excess.

Working alone this was a 9 hour job to complete all Xynole installation. I ran out of epoxy on the first day and had a small area to finish when my epoxy was replenished. My approach of mixing large epoxy quanities was only possible because of the 60 degree temps.

This picture depicts rolling back the bottom panel fabric edge in preparation for applying epoxy to the edge of the topside panel to wet tab the topside panel in place . Next, the blue masking tape was removed. Then I pulled the bottom panel Xynole back over the topside panel fabric and went to town on spreading the epoxy.

For the topside/bottom panel Xynole seam in the area of the chine flats, I put this seam in the valley formed by the chine flat and the bottom panel which made fairing of the seam easier .

I didn't accurately keep track of the amount of epoxy I used. I guess 5-6 gallons. This includes the epoxy that glued my elbows and knees to my clothes. I also got a head start on coating my concrete floor with an epoxy based material.

After the Xynole installation was complete and epoxy sufficiently hardened, I used a wide and very sharp wood chiesel to fair the topside/bottom seams.

I believe that the lamination of the bottom/topside seam with both edges wet results in a thinner seam as the material can be compacted together versus later laying bottom fabric onto cured topside fabric.

Bathroom

Bathroom

Clad in marine ply, and then painted with a marine grade epoxy resin/varnish, the bathroom is finally beginning to take shape. A minor problem with the shower head to be resolved, a glass panel, and then a clean, and it should all be good.

The mat on the floor is made from cedar. It'll get a coat of varnish, and then that's what we'll stand on when we shower.

Moisture Control Handbook: Principles and Practices for Residential and Small Commercial Buildings

Moisture Control Handbook: Principles and Practices for Residential and Small Commercial Buildings

In the climate-controlled buildings of today, moisture problems affect not only the useable life expectancy of the structure, but the comfort and health of the occupants. This reference is the first to apply up-to-date moisture control and treatment techniques in a problem/solution format. Opening with an introductory explanation of the nature and causes of mold, mildew, and condensation, the book gives specific advice on heated, cooled, and combination environments, plus a short course in the dynamics of moisture movement within buildings. Other invaluable coverage includes:
* clear, detailed recommended practices for all United States climates
* practices for cooling as well as heating climates (often, heating climate solutions are applied in cooling climates, where problems and solutions are completely different)
* an overall, systematic view of moisture problems--including how mechanical systems and occupant lifestyles can create and also resolve moisture problems
* actual case studies of buildings with moisture problems that illustrate the principles and practices presented in the book
This detailed, no-nonsense exploration of moisture cause and effect--as well as its protection and remediation--will expand readers' knowledge on this crucial subject. Moisture Control Handbook will be welcomed by building contractors, architects, mechanical engineers, building science researchers, building product manufacturers, homeowners, and small commercial building owners.

The black plastic is the moisture barrier that must be put down if you have a concrete slab. The pieces of laminate snap together, and then you use a tapping block to tighten them up. Because the pieces lock on the ends and the sides, you should put together an entire row long-ways, tap them into each other, and then fit the entire length of the row onto the row before, tapping everything in tightly.

Black keys Patrick Carney Finished

Black keys Patrick Carney Finished

The Akron, Ohio-based duo The Black Keys is well known for its concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment in an unfinished basement or commandeering the floor of a vacant local rubber factory to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. But guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney now admit they were ready for a change of scene-as well as some company. So when they got the opportunity to work with Grammy Award-nominated producer-musician-provocateur Danger Mouse, a/k/a Brian Burton (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album), they agreed, for the first time, to leave their familiar environs. They weren't quite willing to cross state lines yet, though.

The Black Keys had originally been approached by Danger Mouse to write songs for an album he was developing with Grammy Award-winning R&B legend Ike Turner, who, in recent years, had been recognized more for his contribution to the birth of rock & roll than for the time he'd spent in the tabloids. That project would never be completed, however, and the 76 year-old Turner passed away unexpectedly in December.

As the pair were composing and sending tracks out to Danger Mouse in Los Angeles earlier last year, ostensibly for Ike, they realized they were also instinctively laying the groundwork for a new album of their own. So when Patrick went to L.A. to visit his wife's family, he called up Danger Mouse to go out for drinks and, he says, "I asked him straight up if he wanted to produce our record. He said yeah, and we made a plan. Nothing was set in stone until about a week before we went in to record in August. I think Dan and I were intrigued to work with somebody as a producer because we both realized we couldn't teach ourselves anything more, and it was best to start learning from other people. When we were, like, 22, we didn't have the money to do this; by the time we were 24, maybe we thought we knew more than we actually did. Now, at 27, we maybe just realized we had stopped being broke, and stopped being dip-shits, and we could learn from other people who make records."

"After doing four albums in the basement, we were ready to go somewhere else," Dan confesses, "but it couldn't just be anywhere. Brian suggested L.A., but we said no way. We still wanted to do it in Ohio. There's this guy named Paul Hamann, who has a studio outside Cleveland called Suma. I'd done a bunch of projects with him before, bands that I've recorded on the side. He's done some mastering and cut some vinyl for me. In fact, he's got one of the only studios in the world where they still cut their own vinyl. So we said we wanted to go there, and Brian said, 'Whatever you guys want.'"

The legacy, the hand-built recording console, and the engineering skills of Hamann were undoubtedly attractive to The Black Keys, but perhaps it was the ambience of the place that really sealed the deal. As Patrick explains, with genuine affection, "The place is covered with dust, it smells like a moldy cabin, and it looks like a haunted house. It was fitting for our first time of going into a real studio-basically being in a haunted house that hasn't been updated since 1973." Dan continues, "A big part of the sound of this record is the studio and having somebody like Paul, who is an old pro, recording us and helping us get the right sound. Having him there meant that we were free to jump on any instruments we wanted to add stuff. If I wanted to play organ, I could jump on it and just record it; if I wanted to jump on the guitar, I could do it. Brian and Pat had a moog part they thought would be cool on a song, so they would just try it. That studio is a really special place."

Danger Mouse fit right in, too. Says Dan, "He came in as our collaborator. Brian does hip-hop, but he likes rock and roll, obscure 60s psychedelic stuff, and we listen to a lot of that too. So he was pretty easy to get along with. Brian has a real ear for melody and arrangement, and that was a big part of this record, his making suggestions about the arrangements."

Dan and Patrick were childhood buddies who grew up in the same Akron neighborhood and attended the same schools. But they didn't recognize their natural musical affinity until well into high school when they started jamming together with other aspiring musician friends, who they soon ditched. Early demos of The Black Keys featured a third member, who played a moog bass, but he didn't last long either, and they subsequently carried on as a duo. Says Dan, "Pat and I just click. We walk in to a groove quite easily. It's kind of hard to describe." Their minimalist approach to rock is similar to what the late-70s New York City duo Suicide's has been to electronic dance music: The Black Keys have been able to make something ferociously noisy, deceptively melodic,

Capitol Records Bldg, Lines and Curves

Capitol Records Bldg, Lines and Curves

The Capitol Records Building, also known as the Capitol Records Tower (see previous photo to see whole building), is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The 13-story earthquake resistant tower[citation needed] designed by Welton Becket, was the world's first circular office building. The construction of the building was ordered by British company EMI soon after its 1955 acquisition of Capitol Records. It was completed in April 1956, just north of the intersection of Hollywood and Vine as the consolidated West Coast operations of Capitol Records. It is also home to the Capitol Studios well-known recording studios and echo chambers. It is located in the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District, which is on the List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles. Although not originally specifically designed as such,[1] the wide curved awnings over windows on each story and the tall spike emerging from the top of the building combine to give it the appearance of a stack of vinyl 45s on a turntable. The rectangular ground floor is a separate structure, joined to the tower after it was completed. It was built at a height of 13 stories, to conform to the 150-foot (46 m) height limit imposed on all Los Angeles construction. Earthquake height restrictions were later lifted in 1964. The 13th floor of the tower is known as the "Executive Level" and is designated as the "E" floor in the building's two elevators. The blinking light atop the tower spells out the phrase "Hollywood" in Morse code, and has done so since the building's opening in 1956. This was an idea of Capitol's then president, Alan Livingston, who wanted to subtly advertise Capitol's status as the first record label with a base on the west coast. The switch activating the light was thrown by Lyla Morse, Samuel Morse's granddaughter.[1] In 1992 it was changed to read "Capitol 50" in honor of the label's fiftieth anniversary. It has since returned to spelling "Hollywood". A black and white graphic image of the building appeared on the albums of many Capitol recording artists, with the phrase, "From the Sound Capitol of the World".
