G. & W. E. Downing, Maltsters, Gloucester, November 2011

Maltsters George and William E. Downing from Smethwick in the West Midlands opened their first malthouse in Gloucester in 1876. As their business expanded, they built a second malthouse to the north of the original building in 1895. Designed by Walter B. Wood and built by the Gurney Brothers, it consisted of three ranges. The first two included a basement with a steeping tank in which barley was soaked usually for a couple of days and a working floor where the barley was allowed to germinate and sprout, a malt room where malt was stored and bagged, two more working floors, and an attic where barley was stored. The third range, to the north included a large malt kiln and a smaller barley kiln, where germination was inhibited. Part of this building was also used to clean and repair returned malt sacks. The absence of windows on the upper floors of the third range gave Downing ample space to advertise their business.

That sinking feeling!

That sinking feeling!

This newly built house, which isn't even completed, is sinking into the ground!

I am not at all surprised to see this as most houses in Japan are constructed on hastily prepared foundations. The foundations of most houses are simply compacted earth with very little in the way of concrete or sub-strata bearings for support.

Houses in Japan are built in under 2 months usually and made from timber and compressed chipboard. Workmanship is generally good, but there are no hard and fast building regulations.

Looking at the floor in the hall where it meets up with a closet. The closet has the only remaining carpeted floor in my house. This closet was originally the water heater closet before it was moved. Catch-22

Catch-22

Excerpts
---------------------
It was a horrible joke, but Doc Daneeka didn't laugh until Yossarian came to him one mission later and pleaded again, without any real expectation of success, to be grounded. Doc Daneeka snickered once and was soon immersed in problems of his own, which included Chief White Halfoat, who had been challenging him all that morning to Indian wrestle, and Yossarian, who decided right then and there to go crazy.
'You're wasting your time,' Doc Daneeka was forced to tell him.
'Can't you ground someone who's crazy?'
'Oh, sure. I have to. There's a rule saying I have to ground anyone who's crazy.'
'Then why don't you ground me? I'm crazy. Ask Clevinger.'
'Clevinger? Where is Clevinger? You find Clevinger and I'll ask him.'
'Then ask any of the others. They'll tell you how crazy I am.'
'They're crazy.'
'Then why don't you ground them?'
'Why don't they ask me to ground them?'
'Because they're crazy, that's why.'
'Of course they're crazy,' Doc Daneeka replied. 'I just told you they're crazy, didn't I? And you can't let crazy people decide whether you're crazy or not, can you?' Yossarian looked at him soberly and tried another approach. 'Is Orr crazy?'
'He sure is,' Doc Daneeka said.
'Can you ground him?'
'I sure can. But first he has to ask me to. That's part of the rule.'
'Then why doesn't he ask you to?'
'Because he's crazy,' Doc Daneeka said. 'He has to be crazy to keep flying combat missions after all the close calls he's had. Sure, I can ground Orr. But first he has to ask me to.'
'That's all he has to do to be grounded?'
'That's all. Let him ask me.'
'And then you can ground him?' Yossarian asked.
'No. Then I can't ground him.'
'You mean there's a catch?'
'Sure there's a catch,' Doc Daneeka replied. 'Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy.' There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.
'That's some catch, that Catch-22,' he observed.
'It's the best there is,' Doc Daneeka agreed.
--------------------------------------------------
'But you can't just turn your back on all your responsibilities and run away from them,' Major Danby insisted. 'It's such a negative move. It's escapist.' Yossarian laughed with buoyant scorn and shook his head. 'I'm not running away from my responsibilities. I'm running to them. There's nothing negative about running away to save my life. You know who the escapists are, don't you, Danby? Not me and Orr.'
---------------------------------------------------
'You must make decisions,' Major Danby disagreed. 'A person can't live like a vegetable.'
'Why not?' A distant warm look entered Major Danby's eyes. 'It must be nice to live like a vegetable,' he conceded wistfully.
'It's lousy,' answered Yossarian.
'No, it must be very pleasant to be free from all this doubt and pressure,' insisted Major Danby. 'I think I'd like to live like a vegetable and make no important decisions.'
'What kind of vegetable, Danby?'
'A cucumber or a carrot.'
'What kind of cucumber? A good one or a bad one?'
'Oh, a good one, of course.'
'They'd cut you off in your prime and slice you up for a salad.' Major Danby's face fell. 'A poor one, then.'
'They'd let you rot and use you for fertilizer to help the good ones grow.'
'I guess I don't want to live like a vegetable, then,' said Major Danby with a smile of sad resignation.
-----------------------------------------------------
'I'm cold,' Snowden whimpered. 'I'm cold.'
'There, there,' Yossarian mumbled mechanically in a voice too low to be heard. 'There, there.' Yossarian was cold, too, and shivering uncontrollably. He felt goose pimples clacking all over him as he gazed down despondently at the grim secret Snowden had spilled all over the messy floor. It was easy to read the message in his entrails. Man was matter, that was Snowden's secret. Drop him out a window and he'll fall. Set fire to him and he'll burn. Bury him and he'll rot, like other kinds of garbage. The spirit gone, man is garbage. That was Snowden's secret. Ripeness was all.
-----------------------------------------------------
TONY'S RESTAURANT FINE FOOD AND DRINK. KEEP OUT. The words on the blue neon sign surprised him mildly for only an instant. Nothing warped seemed bizarre any more in his strange, distorted surroundings. The tops of the sheer buildings slanted in weird, surrealistic perspective, and the street seemed tilted. He raised

Notes for Doug: I talked to Mike (young Mike, not old Mike) about cutting off the shelf -- he had not seen the note but thinks he can do it. he also thinks he can fix the creak.

there is no difference between the foam layer with text & the one without. Ikea prefers to use the one without text so that people can't get the info to go directly to the manufacturer.

old Mike dropped by to check on the deck. he said that we should get something from Marc & the manufacturer, a 5-year warranty. Mike thinks that if we maintain it properly it extends the warranty for another 5 years -- something to confirm w/ Marc.

remind me to tell you about the extra areas that Marc scraped up & what Mike said about it.

He also says that if the ceiling hasn't dried out within a week he'll come back and fix it. I'll be spraying it with water to ensure that it's still wet. I want it fixed!

The birds(Hitchcock Tribute)

The birds(Hitchcock Tribute)

Argumento [editar]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(Cinemanía) Based on a novelette by Daphne Du Maurier, the story focuses on beautiful young Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), a wealthy socialite whose father is an owner of a large newspaper. Melanie visits a San Francisco pet shop to pick up a mynah bird she has ordered for her aunt. There she meets Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), a lawyer who is looking for a pair of lovebirds to give to his sister. Mitch sees Melanie and pretends to mistake her for a salesperson. Melanie acts the role, believing that she's fooling Mitch, until he reveals that he knew all along that she did not work in the shop. Melanie, infuriated, inquires as to the reason for Mitch's behavior. He mentions a previous encounter that he had with her in court.
Intrigued by Mitch, Melanie buys the lovebirds and finds the address of Mitch's home in Bodega Bay, a small village up the Pacific coast. She drives to Bodega Bay and delivers the birds by sneaking across the small harbor in a motor boat. Melanie walks into the Brenner residence and leaves the birds on a footstool, with a note. As she is heading back across the bay, Mitch observes her through a pair of binoculars, then circles around the bay in his car to meet her -

Blennerville windmill Co Kerry

Blennerville windmill Co Kerry

Situation
The village of Blennerville lies just south of Tralee, the main town of County Kerry, on the edge of Tralee Bay. It is located on the main Tralee-Dingle Road (N86/R555). The Tralee and Blennerville area is easily accessible from Kerry Airport, and by car, bus or train.
The Slieve Mish mountains sweeping down almost to the sea and the view from Blennerville past the Maharees peninsula to Brandon Head and the Dingle Peninsula make this an area of outstanding beauty, ideally suited for holidays. The renowned hikers trail, the Dingle Way begins in Blennerville and stretches along the coast, crossing the Brandon mountains before dropping down to the port of Dingle.

History
In the year 1800 there were over 100 working windmills in Ireland, now only 3 survive - Blennerville, and its sister nills at Ballycopeland, Co. Down, and Tacumshin, Co. Wexford. The introduction of steam power marked the death of the traditional wind-powered windmill in the middle of the last century. Blennerville windmill was built about 1800 by Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, an English settler, after whom Blennerville vilage is named. The mill was a thriving concern with granaries and storehouses nearby. In its heyday, the windmill was used for grinding corn for both the local population and for export to Britain. It was ideally placed near to the quayside of the canal from the mouth of Tralee Bay to the edge of the town.
But tragedy befell Blennerhassett's wife Milicent, who was killed by a blow from the sails. The sails employ canvas to catch the wind, but can turn too quickly if over-set.
Blennerville was at one time the port of Tralee, but the estuary suffers from heavy silting and in the 1830's the Tralee Ship Canal was built to bring boats of up to 300 tons to the town's Prince's Quay. This area is now being renovated and Tralee Marina is being built at Prince's Quay.
The windmill fell into disuse about 1850 and became the victim of the many storms sweeping in from the Atlantic.
The windmill was purchased in 1982 by Tralee Urban Council, but had by this time become completely derelict and sfructurally unsound. The Council had to decide whether to demolish it or stabilise it. Fortunately for our tourist industry in the area, the Council and the newly-formed Blennerville Committee decided to stabilise and restore it, with the primary aim of restoring it as a tourist attraction.
Dr. Fred Hamond, an industrial archeologist based at Queen's University, Belfast, an expert on mill restoration, was engaged by the Committee to report on the viability and scope of the restoration project in 1983. After visiting Blennerville, Dr. Hamond concluded that although badly deteriorated, a full restoration was possible. He suggested 4 stages of restoration:

consolidation of the existing structure.
rehabilitation and utilisation of the shell.
reconstruction of the cap and sails.
fitting of all internal machinery such that the mill would once again grind corn.
This work was begun in June 1984 and completed in 1990. The Windmill Centre now comprises a Craft Centre, exhibition gallery, audio-visual presentation and restaurant adjoining the now-working windmill.
The painstaking restoration was undertaken by ANCO as a community youth training scheme. Work on the windmill itself included the replacement of all 19 windows and door arches, fitting of new pitch-pine floors, exterior rendering, manufacturing of the elm wall plate and winding wheel, turning of the massive 24 inch diameter wind and main shafts and the erection of a permanent roof.

Radiant Floor

radiant floor

    radiant floor
  • Radiant heating is a technology for heating indoor and outdoor areas. Radiant heating consists of "radiant energy" being emitted from a heat source. Radiant heating heats a building through radiant heat, rather than other conventional methods including convection heating.

  • A type of radiant heating system where the building floor contains channels or tubes through which hot fluids such as air or water are circulated. The whole floor is evenly heated. Thus, the room heats from the bottom up.

Radiant Floor Manifold

Radiant Floor Manifold

The main hot water feed will enter the bottom manifold (note the red-handled valve), pass out into the red PEX loops, return to the top manifold, and flow back to the heat exchanger via the exit at the top left (note the blue-handled valve). The interesting thing here is that the individual loop valves (which are controlled by the zone thermostats) are located on the cold-water return manifold, i.e. the exit of the loop, not the entrance.

The floor is done!

The floor is done!

This is what we were left with after all of the floor was removed. The long pieces of wood are floor joists. For some reason, the tops of them were trimmed into a point instead of being left flat. This will make installing a new subfloor challenging. I think we may nail some new beams onto both sides of the old joists.

In between each joist are short planks that were holding up the concrete. (We're not sure what's under the planks, and I'm not sure we really want to find out...)

The plumbing is interesting too. All of the pipes that apparently supply water for the sink and toilet are brass pipes. However, they don't actually go anywhere. At some point in the past, they were replaced with modern copper pipes. This is why the sink supply lines are slightly off center compared to the drain line.
