The day the Escort died 100509

I'm back after almost two weeks away. The start of our journey was a little difficult as the cylinder head gasket on our old Ford Escort decided to give up about 35 miles from Dover where we were due to board our cruise to the Baltic. Needless to say it was a bit expensive to get the car off the motorway but the people were very good (Andy's of Dover) and we made it to the cruise, had the estimate of the bill for repair texted to us, and they stored the car while we were away. The bill was going to be too high so we decided to scrap the car on our return. The holiday got better once we got to the ship!! You may be pleased to know that we have bought a car to replace this one on 010609 - a Chevrolet Lacetti!!!

Stained Glass Fanlight (Centerweighted Average Metering)

Stained Glass Fanlight (Centerweighted Average Metering)

This is one of three nearly identical photos I shot of a door with a stained glass fanlight. There was a lot of light coming in from the outside during the day, and not much light in the anteroom where I stood to take this photo. I experimented with the three light metering settings on my camera (Evaluative, Partial, and Center-Weighted Average) to see how I could capture the image using the various forms of metering.

From a technical standpoint, I think I like the way this one turned out the best overall, because the color rendition of the stained glass is fairly good and it doesn't obscure the door and render it a silhouette. I think the photo taken with partial metering is prettier, though, even though it renders the door a silhouette.

20080513 - I Prefer Mine.

20080513 - I Prefer Mine.

Why my car is better:

1. The Bentley's fuel economy: 10 mpg city / 17 mpg hwy. My Scion averages 30 mpg.
2. This Bentley model does not come with a manual transmission.
3. My car cost 20x less.
4. Scion is made by Toyota; Bentley is made by Volkswagen ;)

plus (as suggested by the Flickrites below):
5. cheaper to maintain / repair
6. Larger cargo space
7. Carries 5 people (the Bentley seats 4 but the 2 in back can't be very big)
8. Cops more likely to forgive / overlook

rovingmagpie - since the Bentley's top is removable, I'm not going to take away points...

French Door Jester 1

French Door Jester 1

This jester was on the left hand side of the French Doors that opened out onto the 100ft garden. His colours are extremely rich and the blue of his tunic contrasted well with the green of the Jester on the right handside (I can't find his photo at the moment - but I will). The gold bells on this jester were of flat yellow glass with detail etched on but on the green jester they are raised roundals. Both this blue jester and the green one suffered a bit of damage during the war and had pieces of clear glass inserted in some as repairs but it hardly notices.

This is why I wanted a cameraphone, to capture things like this that I come across in my travels, when I haven't got my 'proper' camera with me. These snowblowers sit in a corner of the local council depot. They're very old, and probably have not been used for a very long time, if ever. Although I'm sure they are kept in full working order just in case they were ever needed, you never know with the weather these days...

week 47/52 decisions, decisions

week 47/52 decisions, decisions

most of my flickr/ FB friends know that i have a love/ hate relationship with my camera and a particular lens. they don't seem to want to play nice with one another and my camera keeps slipping with it's auto focus. I blamed it on my poor skills for a long time, but then a nice canon rep (mary mannix) lent me a replacement camera and lens and I found that it was a lot of the cameras fault. well, it's come to that time again .... it's going in for it's THIRD repair. Grrrr. knowing that I still have a few weeks left for 52 weeks, I pulled out all of my cameras to pick which I might use to finish the job....

as a post note, I've chickened out and delayed sending in the camera until my 52 weeks is finished. i just can't bear to be without out it, no matter how crappy it's being. is that some sort of messed up enabler relationship or something?? lol.

1-Original Hole

This is the original hole in the wall. See that black plastic tubing? It had come completely detached from that aluminum duct above it and had fallen down towards the bottom of the "chase" (that enclosed space it is in). This resulted in Hanna's wall becoming VERY hot to the touch...and us paying to heat the NW side of Indy.

The hole was only 14.5" wide by 16.5" tall. But it was much bigger than the "nail holes" I am used to patching. For a job this size, I had to buy a book and learn a bit about actual drywall repair.

Not bad timing. This wall collapsed just over a month ago and it was repaired this morning. The mortar being used does contrast sharply with the original brickwork. I suppose he knows what he is doing.

Correcting The Great Wrongs - Raidr(3): Poster Sharing! ^ ^;

You, the audience, can cast the votes that direct the next phase of the Raider3 Singularity! Here's what's happening tonight!

Posters were found, and put back up on the bare walls of the messy messy room - (a.k.a. Raider3's Inner Sanctum)

It's not much, but at least I have some back up.

A poster in need of serious TLC and repair before mounting. (I got it about as thrashed as it is now.)

This is a promotional poster from Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle In The Sky: Laputa" film from 1987. (Disney/Buena Vista released an excellent English subbed/dubbed version not too long ago on DVD. I mean, Mark Hamill portrays the English voice role for Muska, the main antagonist in the film, and does a pretty good job. I gave it a listen, though I'm a subtitle fan.)

I also have the import CD soundtrack somewhere.

Rockaway Beach - Pacifica, California

Rockaway Beach - Pacifica, California

Rockaway Beach is a shoreline area of the Pacific Ocean in the southern portion of Pacifica, California approximately seven miles south of the city of San Francisco. The beach is noted for its scenic vista, easy access to Highway 1, and restaurant and shopping venues. Rockaway beach is located within a gently curving embayment with direct access via Rockaway Beach Avenue.

Pacifica is a city in San Mateo County, California, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. According to City Limits signs in the year 2006, the population was 40,401.

The City of Pacifica is spread along a six mile stretch of the north central California coastal beach and hills, nestled in several small valleys spanning between Sweeney Ridge above on the east, Montara Mountain to the south, and the Pacific Ocean's sandy beaches and rocky bluffs to the west.

Pacifica is well known regionally as a popular surfing destination with Pacifica State Beach/Linda Mar Beach often crowded with surfers. Rockaway Beach is a scenic location and offers recreation, shopping and dining. 2005 marked the opening of the top ranked [5] Pacifica Skateboard Park. Pacifica is also a popular mountain biking destination, with many trails crossing the hillsides that surround the city, including, Pedro Mountain Road, Sweeny Ridge, part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. Fishermen frequent the local beaches, and the Pacifica Pier, catching fish including Striped Bass and Salmon. Many people also enjoy hiking and going barefoot in Pacifica, either along the many beaches and bluffs including Mori Point, or on the hillsides including San Pedro Valley County Park[6], the Sanchez Adobe and Milagra Ridge. For live local theater arts, Pacifica Spindrift Players is consistently popular, in addition to Pacifica Performances which regularly serves up both musical presentations and performing arts. Pacifica is also home to the Sharp Park Golf Course[7] designed in 1931 by famous golf architect Alister MacKenzie. The world class bromeliad nursery, Shelldance[8] is located just off Highway 1 in Pacifica, adjacent to the Sweeney Ridge hiking trailhead.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 38,390 people, 13,994 households, and 9,655 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,038.9 people per square mile (1,173.6/km?). There were 14,245 housing units at an average density of 1,127.6/sq mi (435.5/km?). The racial makeup of the city was 69.51% White, 3.27% African American, 0.49% Native American, 15.29% Asian, 0.69% Pacific Islander, 4.18% from other races, and 6.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.61% of the population.

There were 13,994 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $71,737, and the median income for a family was $78,361. Males had a median income of $50,761 versus $40,261 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,183. About 1.2% of families and 2.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.2% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.

The oldest person to ever live in Pacifica is Rose G. Rosenthal who was born on April 8, 1901, and is still alive today.

The Reverend Herschell Harkins Memorial pier was constructed in 1973 and was designed to carry sewage piping out to sea. It was closed in 1992 due to corrosion of some of the structure. Since then the pier has been repaired and is a well known fishing spot; on July 8-9, 1995, over 1000 salmon were caught from the pier.

she had a suitcase, full of noble intentions

My life in a suitcase.

My mind is preoccupied with moving plans. Packing for a move means I'll have to cram my life into suitcases and boxes. That gave me the idea for this photo.

And yes, I really did squash myself in that suitcase, but I'm short, so it wasn't that bad, haha!

Mr. Paul Schweitzer, repair master

Mr. Paul Schweitzer, repair master

My IBM Selectric “Personal” typewriter is in good hands with Mr. Paul Schweitzer of Gramercy Office Equipment Co. (June 3, 2011).

In New York City, the place to go for typewriter repairs and tune-ups is Gramercy Office Equipment Co. (212-674-7700), 174 Fifth Avenue. Ask for Mr. Paul Schweitzer or his son Justin Schweitzer. I’m a satisfied customer and I approve this message. The Schweitzers have been in the business at least since the 1930s; they’ve had a repair shop in the Flatiron/Gramercy Park neighborhood since the the 1930s. They were on the 8th floor of the Flatiron Building from the 1940s until just around 2008; now directly across Fifth Avenue from the Flatiron at 174, on the fourth floor. Not “stuck in the past,” they also repair Hewlett-Packard laser printers and fax machines.
