Surkamp, Jim. (2009). “Frontier Iron-Making.” {Video}. (7:33). Retrieved 3 Aug. 2011.
and
Diderot, Denis. (1751). “Encyclopedie, ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers (English: Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts). Paris, France. Print.

Eric Johnson On Starting an Armory and Rifling (from the video):

"When the country was first formed and our first President was George Washington, he’s known to us in Jefferson County for a variety of reasons, but Mr. Washington came to Jefferson County also to look for a suitable location for a place to build these firearms. Now, I picked the Charleville for a reason. That’s because in the American Revolution, the principle arm that we were armed with from another country at first, was the

Brown Bess from Britain. But as you can imagine the British were a little hostile and angry with us, so that didn’t last too long. So we went looking for other sources, and the French, ever anxious to do battle with England, were able to arm us with the Charleville pattern musket.

We had a lot of these left over from the Revolutionary War; and what ended up happening was that we took that musket pattern and the Ordinance Department said: “You know? We need to copy already what we have in stock. What makes the most sense?” – and that would be the Charleville. So Washington came to Jefferson County to have a look at the area and said: “You know what you need to build a gun. . .”

You notice when I’m holding this gun, you need wood – right?- and you need metal.

Well it just so happens in Jefferson County, you have brown hematite flowing under the rocks and under the grounds – and to tell you what that is – that’s iron ore. There had already been existing iron furnaces in the County – in fact, in the Shenandoah Valley and the Cumberland Valley up through the Appalachian stream. So, iron is a necessity when you’re making guns – also to make the machineries, and the cutting bits, and the tools that we need to make all these pieces. The other product you need is wood,

hardwood to be exact. You need walnut perhaps to make the dense stocks. Sometimes maple is used. But, the reason that’s often overlooked and why Harper’s Ferry and Jefferson County seemed a suitable place at the time as we had lots of other hard woods.

And hardwoods are used to form charcoal. (NOTE: This video on iron-making omits the finery forge stage, an oversight-ED)

Eric Johnson continues:
And charcoal is what fires forges – foundries that will do the casting, forges that will use the heat to forge the metal into shapes.

Charcoal is also used in foundries and furnaces to make the raw iron itself. So those raw materials existed in Jefferson County. Also, the one component we add to all this we did have was water power, magnificent water power in the form of the falls of the Shenandoah.

As you know, the Shenandoah and the Potomac converge and they come together. And as they come together, there is a powerful current. So if you wanted to take a wheel, let’s say, or a turbine and go and plop it into the river next to you or build a canal so that you capture some of that falling energy,

and you’re able to turn an axis or a shaft and transfer that so it runs belts and things: well, guess what? – you’ve made a factory. And that is why the area was looked at to build firearms. There were some other reasons. Obviously we were a little closer to the capital of Washington City and it was felt that the location in Jefferson County was far enough away

from the Chesapeake Bay and sea area so that an invading enemy, like the British enemy in 1812, would have a hard time getting to it – let’s say in a day’s time. It would take them a while to get across the mountain and over the roads and passes. So, it was a strategic location to build firearms. It was considered a defensible one. And also all the raw materials were there to build these parts and pieces that we’re going to talk about today.

The other thing that’s overlooked often in the discussion of the making of muskets and rifles is you have to have the people who are talented enough to make them. Well, in the area, we had a nice collection of craftsmen – gunsmiths, professional gunsmiths – who had trained under the craftsmanship system – master gunsmiths in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. So you have that large resource to draw upon to fill the factory system to build this piece. All of the parts and pieces of this plan come together and one of the first pieces produced in the armory system looks an awful lot like this.

It’s called the model 1795 U.S. musket, and it’s probably an exact copy of the one I’m holding in my hand – the Charleville. And so that will go on for years. And that’s the principle arm in the armory system that we’re interested in producing.

In the Revolutionary War, America had a secret. Well, not really so much of a secret, but an idea that was novel to us

Buckeye Furnace Interior

Buckeye Furnace Interior

The front part of the furnace is under roof. The front of the furnace, known as the casting shed, is under roof. The casting floor is a flat area, consisting of a mixture of sand and clay, where the iron is tapped. (clay was mixed with the sand so as to form consistent pig molds). When the furnace was ready for tapping, the workers would remove a clay plug (turned to ceramic by the heat) from the front furnace entrance. The slag would be poured off and discarded. Afterwards, the iron would be permitted to flow down a channel and then into ground depressions dug into the sand floor. The configuration looked like piglets nursing at a sow - hence the origin of the term "pig iron". While the tapped iron cooled, the furnace would be pled for another batch. The furance ran continuously - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At periodic intervals the furnace would be "blown out" to permit completion of maintainence activities on the site. Maintenance This typically involved removing slag, dross, and built up metal from the inside of the stack and cupola. This included removing built up metal from inside of the stack and cupola, and to repair the inner liner.

My first thought when seeing pictures of our kitchen is, "holy clutter, Batman."

I'm not the world's best photographer, but I blame at least part of that on how little natural light we get in our house. This is the only window in the house, and it's just a few feet from the blank wall of the house next door. As you can see from all the shadows and unevenness, the lights we installed in here aren't the best for photos, either.

Presidential Anti-Smling Group Chief Antonio Villar Jr. ..Panel to probe Subic Drugs controversy - Mnl. Bulletin..SBMA blames BOC for late discovery of shabu shipment - Phil. Star.. PASG welcomes

Anti-smling agents find second ' shabu ' load in Subic

NBI test shows first batch ' 98% high grade '

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT , Philippines- Anti-smling agents here on Wednesday discovered another load of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) concealed in a van, just a day after they seized at least 88 kilograms(kg) of the illegal drug in another vehicle shipped to the Subic Bay Freeport.
Presidential Anti-Smling Group (PASG) chief Antonio Villar Jr. said the second batch of the illegal drug, weighing more than 20 kg, brought the value of the entire haul to about P700 million.
Villar also said a chemist brought in by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had tested the first batch of the drug and showed it to be "98 percent high grade. "
Reports said the second batch of shabu was discovered in a van at the headquarters of the Hua Long International Inc. Inside the Freeport. PASG agents are still conducting an inventory of the contents of the vehicle.
The first shipment was found by operatives of PASG and Task Force Subic inside computer boxes loaded in a Mitsubishi Outlander, arrived at 8 p.m. Monday from Vietnam through a vessel that docked at the Subic Ship repair Facility.
It was only at past 4p.m. Tuesday that the agents were allowed to open the car.
The owner of the Outlander was identified as Anton Ang, general manager of Hua Long International Inc., a firm that imports cigarettes.
The firm has been doing business in the Freeport for the past three years, according to officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA).
Villar, citing data from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) , said shabu is sold to retailers at P6,000 per gram.
He said a PDEA representative stood witness at the Olongapo City court from which the PASG sought an order to burn the confiscated shabu.

( April 30,2009 ) In a related news article update compiled from Manila Bulletin by Gabriel Mabutas
PANEL TO PROBE SUBIC DRUGS CONTROVERSY

The independent panel that investigated the Alabang Boys case will convene anew on Monday to look into the questionable dismissal of the criminal complaint against suspected members of a big-time drug syndicate that allegedly smle some P 5 million worth of high grade shabu through the Subic Free Port Zone, Solicitor General Agnes Devanadera said yesterday.
Devanadera, however, said that unlike in the case of the Alabang Boys which zeroed in on allegedly involved, the probe on the Subic drug mess will focus on the administrative aspect of the controversy.
" Bribery may come in, but the focus is what's going to be the accountability of the public officials, "the solicitor general said.
" it could be lapses. It could be overt act. It could be intentional acts. It could be none. It could be regular action, " she said.
She said the panel will seek to " establish some facts, and to inquire on the reaction of the officials when all things happened. "
If the bribery would come out during panel investigation, Devanadera said, the panel may choose to recommend the filing of criminal charges against officials whom they could find liable in the controversy.
The investigation is significant because " the President wants to send strong message... that she means business, " Devanadera said.
She said President arroyo gave the panel, headed by retired Supreme Court justice Carlina Grino-Aquino, 15 days to finish the investigation and come up with a recommendation.
On Tuesday, Devanadera inspected the Subic Bay Free port zone to see how 746.50 kilos of high-grade Shabu, contained in 73 boxes, was brought into the port, and intercepted by authorities.
Devanadera went to the Subic port to secure evidence that could show that irregularities attended to the dismissal of the drug complaint and the escape of Chinese national Anthony " Anton " Ang who was in possession of the contraband when intercepted.
Records showed that the boxes of drugs were ferried by vessel F/ B Shun Fa Xing and brought into the country on May 25 last year, through riviera pier in the SMBA port.
The shipment was misdeclared as computer spare-parts, and only discovered when it was opened after Ang, who turned out to be a co-owner of Hualong International Inc, an import-export firm based in the Subic, abandoned it.
It was in the Mitsubushi Outlander driven by Ang when it was intercepted by SBMA port sentinels. Ang was then about to leave the SBMA compound.
Eight of the cartons found in Ang's vehicle were held by SBMA authorities due to Ang's failure to show proper documentations.
Ang was then referred to SBMA's Law Enforcement department (LED), which later took possession of the contraband. The LED allowed Ang to leave and secure the required documentation for the release of the boxes, but he never returned.
The eight boxes in LED's possession

Out of all the troubles

Out of all the troubles

2007 spring is starting. Now we only have short dash til summer vacation holidays and then the rest is all holiday - repeated almost every month and we go into the next year.

Are we coming out of wars. Are we coming out of all the dems and republican stuff. I don't know yet. But here is something we are still going to pay for, right here, all the time.

It's un-updated infras of the United States. These days I still read much about tanking housing markets and mortgage problems and also, estate taxes hike and so on. Say in that last estate boom cycle, the house value went up like 30 to 50% even - in this region, the bottom level kind, and each house is like maybe 50,000 dollar worth at most originally. (It's all very shacky area. So so concrete foundations on swamps with plywood walls without any insulations in walls or roof. Built around 50s.)

But then price can go double - in the time of 2000 - til mid 2006.

Problem is that that money is not reflected in any of the substantial parts of this house, or all those houses increased value in that time. It's basically, houses built before oil shocks - (probably with federal government issued mortgages - post war thing.) - without any consideration about

How long this should last
How much, how frequent repairs and replacements have to be done?
What about energy cost

etc.

It's basically something needs real overhaul. Probably something like even 10,000 dollars would do much. Insualting from the roof, walls. Checking windows. (Some professionals would say 'Just raze it and it's cheap and eco-friendly to build new one.' I see that calculation but that's for another time.)

But then banks and governments run this hike thing first. You don't believe people would put more money on buying rusting, breaking down old cars. But it is a house, so, no matter how many 'things' are going wrong or unupdated - price just went double for this one, almost.

But nothing is done to this house past 50 years. And if you put the price double, the people who bought this house won't have money to fix it up.

Then the landlord who bought this house has no money left for fixing anything - and then he faces this softmarket in which he probably even cannot sell out without making much loss. It was all in all, like a bad, un-thought-out gamble.

And with the current gas and oil price - globally - soaring high, properly heating this house all winter long cost say nearly 1,000 dollars. (If you use gas. Coal based electricity is much cheaper and that was our choice.)

Money goes to bank, county (they raise tax of course), and utility.

And house gets no updates.

I know there is a line in somewhere in the middle class America, for some this is something just makes them argue back that many of their friends are actually putting money in their houses and doing green or eco repairs.

But there is a lower part of that line. And Americans lower than that line cannot afford to even pay say 30 or 50 dollars to put a decent curtain on their single pane windows, or replace broken water tap wheel.

Why? Pay hasn't rised for those groups. Health cost rose. Mortgage rose or rent rose. Utilities are up.

Just last week in one night, Charlie Rose had two guests, showing up and talking of this kinda problem is going to come around for us harder - in coming years.

[the connection part is finally broken, and seems 80% of the water just leak from there. Shelter Science: You probably cannot replace those metal parts- on the tap wheel side or hose side - either is broken - but it'd take too much. They aren't made to be so modular. One solution is finding' glue' - to stuff the gap or crack or what at that connection. But I am suspicious that we have such magic glue, which withstands summer's heat and winter's long cold - without cracking and creating further messy situation when that glue gives out.]

[I don't understand why American houses really don't have 'section' for water taps and sinks and spaces - with roof for 'outside, yard work/activity' stuff. If they got acres of lot, then you'd have machineries and tools and actitivites. Then you need place to put them, you need place to shelf them and wash them and so on.

But by so far, in this region - comes with very long and cold winter - I always find 'outdoor tap' hanging on the wall, and really out of shapes. Why not build some area with some walls and roof - and put these water and sink stuff there? > I should send question to craigslist.]

Pony Express

Pony Express

When I was growing up, we had a Pinto. It was the main family car. A hatchback. Blue. That car needed routine work. Dad was always tinkering under the hood to keep it going.

We drove out to Colorado (over the mountains!) more than once in that car. I learned how to repair an exhaust pipe with a tin can from that car.

Furthermore, regarding the exhaust system, I learned that if the car blows the muffler off in the rain at night in Rapid City, SD, it is very loud and Dad will be very angry about it.

I got kicked out of the Pinto, along with my sister (4 years older than myself) on a very desolate stretch of county highway in South Dakota. The sun was setting and my Dad drove off. A long way off. We were quiet in the back after that.

Our Pinto also had a massive rust problem with the under carriage. It was so bad that the passenger seat (while I was in it) after hitting a crater in the road (it was beyond pot hole phase) listed to the right to the point where the head rest was resting on the passenger door window and I could see the road going by under the car (Dad fixed it later that week).

Once, when my Mom was driving my sister and I from something, we were caught in a torrential downpour and the underside of the engine got wet. The car coughed, died, and rolled to a stop along the interstate just under an overpass, which allowed the engine to dry out and us to get on our way after about 20 minutes.

But my favorite Pinto story is this: My Dad spent a summer working in Fort Payne, Alabama. Fireworks were legal there and not in Minnesota. (Here is a moment where you realize that times have changed...) Dad brought a grocery sack of fireworks home with him one weekend... ON THE PLANE! So, we decided to try one of these blackpowder devices in the drive way. It was called a "Saturn Missile" and was 25 plastic red tubes that whistled and took off from a box (arranged in a 5x5 grid) like bottle rockets. We lit the Saturn Missiles, stepped back, not having any idea what they would do other than "issue a loud report and emit a shower of sparks", and off they went! However, the third rocket to go got stuck and blew up in the holder, which tipped over from the explosion. Now, instead of pointing towards the sky, the Saturn Missile was on its side and pointed at the gas tank of the Pinto! Five or six more of the shots went off, skittered under the car, bounded, danced, exploded, and rattled under the fender of the Pinto before Dad could get the box pointed towards the sky again. Ah, good times!

25 Parador de Alcalá de Henares COLEGIO DE SANTO TOMÁS capilla Spa 22882

“El JARDIN TALLADO”.
PARADOR DE ALCALA COLEGIO DE SANTO TOMAS.
Calle Colegios 8 c/f a la c/ Basilios. Alcala de Henares, Madrid
Arquitectos: Maria Jose Aranguren y Jose Gonzalez Gallegos. 2004-2009

New Architecture in Spain" del MOMA en Nueva York.

Luckly, Microsoft has the three year extended warranty plan that they issued back in march because of all the dead machines they were getting. I'm very happy that in Canada we don't have to wait three months for them to "figure out" what the problem was (apparently when the system over heats the GPU's solder points get loose and cause the problem). and now i have a replacements and am very happy that i can now play COD 4 (My Gamertag is excaz5000, hit me up anytime).

Finding the leak

Finding the leak

If a cheap car only covered by liability insurance gets damaged, your only hope is to fix it yourself, lest you end up spending the car's value over again getting an auto shop to repair it.

Thanks to my coworkers, I learned that radiators are designed with freeze plugs. In case it ever gets so cold that the coolant freezes and expands, there's a pressure relief plug of weakened metal at the bottom. Ice floats to the top, so when the expanding ice creates enough pressure the metal circle bursts and out flows the coolant, protecting the rest of the radiator from damage. The impact of the stack of wood created enough pressure to blow this plug. It failed exactly where it should have.

Since the structural damage wasn't too severe, we left it alone and chose to plug the radiator with epoxy. No more freeze plug safety, but hopefully that won't be an issue living in Florida.

Radiator Repair 2

Radiator Repair 2

During a trail ride at the Kansas Rocks Off Road Park, my motor mounts flexed enough for the fan clutch to come in contact with the radiator. Needless to say, a leak was sprung & the wheelin was done.

Watch Ad

Watch Ad

This was an assignment for a class, by no means an actual advertisement for this watch company!

Photoshop was used for spotting/repairs and to lighten the chain links at the bottom of the watch. Everything else is the original image.

Comments & Critique are welcome!

For Strobist:

I used two Mettle MT-160's (cheap ebay strobes). Each strobe is pointed into my living room wall, just outside the angle of reflection from the watch face. This gives the nice white gradients in the watch face. The couple is on their knees a few feet in front of the wall, to back light them.

The watch is on a makeshift paper clip hanger, and there is some flagging to keep the reflections pleasing on the metallic surface.

I used to have a watch just like this one, but I lost it in Hawaii just a couple weeks before becoming a father. Now that we have our four kids (and done), I have the watch again.

And that is the Bently of BMW repair manuals. Really, Bently is the publisher. It is rumored that these guys know fixing BMWs better than BMW itself.

Governor's Island, NY Memorial Plaque

Governor's Island, NY Memorial Plaque

This memorial plaque on the purchase of Governor's Island from the local Manhattan Tribe sits in the park between Colonel's Row and Liggett Hall.

The northern half of Governor's Island is a National Register historic district #85002435. It's also a National Historic Landmark. The National Park Service runs Castle Williams and Fort Jay as a National Monument. The rest of Governor's Island is administered by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation. The island is required by law to have no housing (which is a shame - I think the Presidio model works very well).

The island is open to visitors only on the weekends from spring through fall. If you're ever in New York City, I would highly recommend taking the free ferry over to the island and explore. You can even rent a bike on the island.

gm 11100 NCR Cash Register Repairs, Greg Work 1976

Me doing repairs on an NCR manual cash register. Burnaby, BC 1976.
They were rapidly cutting back as new electronic registers and adding machines were introduced. They broke some promises as far as training and getting paid on time. So I did not last long, quit and went to Montreal for the Olympics.

duck tape party supplies 2 - all you can eat

Get ready for some duct tape.
duct tape is a vinyl, reinforced, multi-purpose pressure sensitive tape with a soft and flexible shell and pressure sensitive adhesive. It is generally silver or black in color but many other colors have recently become available. With a standard width of 17?8 inches (48 mm), duct tape was originally developed during World War II in 1942 as a water resistant sealing tape for ammunition cases. Permacel, then a division of Johnson & Johnson, used a rubber-based adhesive to help the tape resist water and a fabric backing to add strength. It was also used to repair military equipment quickly, including jeeps, firearms, and aircraft because of these properties. From Wikipedia.
