Theology and Practice of Mission: God, the Church, and the Nations Theology disconnected from mission is not Christian theology at all. The pastors, professors, and missionaries writing Theology and Practice of Mission provide a clear biblical-theological framework for understanding the church's mission to the nations. Toward that goal, the book holds three major sections: God's mission, the church's mission, and the church's mission to the nations. Part one explores the canon of Christian Scripture from narrative and systematic angles, explaining how the mission of God-to redeem a people who will be a kingdom of priests to the praise of his glory, bear witness to his gospel, advance his church, and dwell with him forever on a new heaven and earth-is communicated in the Bible's four movements: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. Part two sees the mission of God's people in the light of God's mission, emphasizing not only preaching and church planting but also gospel witness in every dimension of human culture-glorifying God in family, church, work, community, through the arts, sciences, education, business, and the public square. The writers encourage us to live missionally, leaving all of our resources at God's disposal for the sake of his kingdom. Finally, part three contends that the North American church must come to terms with its missional calling-just as international missionaries do-and gives a starting point and parameters for conceiving the church's mission to all people groups and cultural contexts. Chapters here include ones on unreached people groups, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Postmoderns. (7) Completely Stripped My wheel has been disassembled for about two weeks; it's making me crazy not having it available. I'm getting closer, now. Most of the time-consuming (i.e. sanding) work is done. All parts have been stripped using CitriStrip and hand-sanded with 150 grit sandpaper per the instructions on my stain containers. They have also been washed down with mineral spirits to remove residues and dust. Tomorrow I can wipe everything down with a tack cloth and start the staining and finishing process - if I can figure out where the time is coming from! A feeling of camaraderie with all mankind thrills her as she mingles with throngs of foreigners, but her joy is short-lived. WWII shatters the world. As fathers and sons, husbands and brothers dive grimly into the trenches, Anna is left stranded in England, disillusioned and afraid. However, this worldwide catastrophe may be the perfect catalyst to mature Anna into the brave young woman she longs to be. Even as the world is shadowed with disaster, Anna finds friends in the kindly Bertram family. In the midst of all that threatens to tear her world apart, will she find a place to truly belong? JVC KD-BT22 Bluetooth Stereo for the 206 The JVC KD-BT22, previously installed in my Peugeot 405, is a Bluetooth/MP3/USB CD player with external 3.5mm so it basically has everything. No point in keeping the stock Eurovox unit in the 206, so time to swap it out for the JVC. Turns out the Eurovox unit, installed in Australia before shipping to dealers, uses the ISO standard connector. I found an ISO to JVC adapter which cut down on the crimping needed. However when I tested it I found the accessory and permanent power leads were swapped around, and settings weren't being saved. I swapped these two back to their proper positions, not sure why the OEM installer used an ISO connector but not standard wiring. But still all the speaker connections and everything else were all good. I Had to uprate the fuse in the 206 since the JVC uses 15amp and the fuse block only had a 10amp fuse. Also, Europe uses a different standard connector for the antenna so I had to get an appropriate adapter. There was one issue with the installation that I'm not happy about. The 206 stereo has a remote control stalk on the steering wheel. There is no wired remote control input on the JVC, so I've had to forgorthe steering wheel stereo controls. In due course I'll upgrade the head unit to one that supports wired steering column controls. The JVC does have an infrared remote, but it cannot be steering wheel mounted since the ir signal does not reach the receiver on the unit. The next stage will be to replace the OEM speakers with the Pioneer 220w speakers currently in the 405. The OEM set sound okay, but the Pioneers are better. FREIGHTLINER STEERING WHEEL : FREIGHTLINER STEERING
FREIGHTLINER STEERING WHEEL : LOOSE WHEEL BEARING Freightliner Steering Wheel
1950 Bubble nose This restored 1950 Freightliner Bubble Nose truck represents the entrepreneurial spirit of the west. The owner of a trucking company, Leland James, wasn't satisfied with the trucks he bought from other manufacturers. They were originally designed for the east coast and the midwest, and didn't have to power needed to pull the mountain grades found out west. He had some ideas on how to improve the existing trucks, but the manufacturers weren't interested. So he decided to build his own truck in the late 1940's in the city of Portland, OR. His was the first truck to have a lightweight aluminum cab, among other innovations. Eventually, other trucking companies in the area wanted to buy his trucks, and this led to the formation of the truck company Freightliner, which is still located here in Portland to this day. After spending some time with this truck, I have a new found respect for anyone who drove one of these trucks for a living. First of all, they've got manual steering, so any steering at parking lot speeds was a real workout. I was drenched in sweat just getting the truck positioned for this shoot. The engine is inside the cab, with only a thin layer of sheetmetal between the driver and this big Cummins diesel. But the real challenge was mastering the two transmissions. Yes, two! There are two shift levers inside the cab and both are quite tricky to shift. And both are un-synchronized, so it requires a lot more technique than a car with a manual. And sometimes the front box pops out of gear while you're shifting the rear box. So to keep that from happening, you loop your left arm through the steering wheel and hold the front box in gear. Then, you use your right arm to shift the rear box into gear. Since transmissions from this era were so cantankerous, I'm told that sometimes you'd need to use a leg to help "encourage" the transmission into gear. Sounds safe, right? And oh yeah, trucks back then only had rear brakes, because fronts brakes were thought to be dangerous!! I struggled to decide on a subject for this strobist assignment, and I tried to avoid what I would consider to be obvious subjects. I had planned on taking this truck to a location for the photo shoot, but a variety of factors kept that from happening. So the background setting is a bit disappointing, but the warehouse I used was part of the original assembly plant were these trucks were made. So that's somewhat cool. Old school hauler With a four-month summer schedule and short distance hauls, the tractors used by Indianhead Amusements tend to be old examples not commonly found on the roads anymore. This gem from the '70s caught my eye. As a kid learning to draw these Freightliners were a favorite subject of mine. They remain pretty impressive to this day, if you can find one. They have a brute stance and look so tall. The old white steering wheel up against the windshield just adds to the height. Made for a fun trip down memory lane. Cottonwood creek sandstone 0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0 Nothing like getting off a well traveled paved road (Utah highway 89) and slowing down, rolling down the windows, and proceeding at a slow comfortable pace along 50 miles of dirt road. Drive as slow as you like, stop where you want, enjoy the sights, the fragrance of sage, and “no schedule”. The “Cottonwood Canyon Road” is a gem. Last year when I drove it, floods had washed rocks and debris onto the road from side canyons, making it messy driving in places, requiring four wheel drive. On this drive, it was passenger car smooth, with no tricky spots at all. 0 ACTIVITIES DAY TEN OF TWELVE 0 If there was one day to “live again” on this road trip then day TEN was it. It was outstanding from start to finish. The weather was A1 perfect. We had a little dirt road travel with the windows of the Jeep rolled down and a lot of good photo ops at the many different places we traveled. Oh yes, a great meal at the Escalante Outfitters to end the day properly. We left Page, Arizona before dawn. We watched the sun come up over Navajo Mountain and Lake Powell. Then on to “The Toadstools” off highway 89 for a short hike and some great early morning light on those formations. We then backtracked 1.6 miles fto the Cottonwood road (a road I had driven recently in my pickup truck, only from north to south), and enjoyed a clear warm blue sky day drive up to Butler (Grosvenor) arch. From Butler arch, we went on to Kodachrome Basin, where we took a short three mile loop hike. I loved the campground at Kodachrome and have promised my wife that we will camp there together and take some of the longer hikes available in that pretty little state park (Oh yes, the campground has HOT showers). from Kodachrome Basin state park, we drove up to Bryce National Park. LOTS of snow, but beautiful on a sunny day (few other people). We ate at the Subway just outside Ruby Inn - then drove on to Rainbow Point, which at 9,100 feet, had plenty of snow (about three feet worth along the lookout path). Then we worked our way back out Bryce, stopping to photograph at each and every lookout point that had been plowed, enjoying Bryce as the sun dropped down low and the light changed by the minute. After Bryce we backtracked again and drove on to Escalante, Utah (one of my often visited and favorite “base camps”), where we had reserved rooms by phone at the rustic but friendly: Circle “D” motel (ask for Robert and tell him Oldmantravels with the old red Toyota pickup truck sent you). After checking in at the Circle “D”, we headed over to the Escalante Outfitters ( hiking supply, books, free internet use, excellent food, really friendly people cafe) - - for a big dinner a cold beer, pizza, and a “toast” to the best road trip day we had enjoyed thus far. We had LOTS of dirt road destinations in mind for day 11 of the road trip (the next day) BUT we were in for quite a surprise the next morning at Escalante. So like on all good road trips, you stay flexible, make the best of what comes your way, and go for it and that is exactly what we did. 0 3,875 MILE/12 DAY ~ 4 CORNERS ROAD TRIP OVERVIEW 0 At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. Then, if my wife could get the time needed off from her part time job, I also planned a “road trip” vacation to the Southwest, in April with her. When I put the plan together for the March trip, I decided to see if an old friend of mine, Ed (Flickr’s: OldWrangler), might be interested in joining me. I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area. Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand new 4-door Jeep Wrangler instead of my old pickup truck. That didn’t take any thinking on my part. I LOVE Jeeps and Ed and I have always got along well (decades ago, I worked for him and we had taken a fun road trip together back in 2008, along with my friend John and my youngest son). The deal was sealed. We left my house in Central Washington early Monday morning on the 14th of March. We returned 12 days and 3,875 miles later on Friday evening March 25th. We spent a lot of time drinking Diet Pepsi from the ice chest and keeping the hits of the 60s (and occasionally the 70s), cranked up high on the Jeep’s Sirius satellite radio sound system. Sing along music! “Road trip” tunes. Weather often dictated changes to our proposed route and activities. We stayed flexible, and in the end we visited the large majority of places we had hoped to see, when the road trip began. We had sun and clear skies, snow, dust storms, and high winds at times. Ed’s Jeep had an outside temperature display. We drove in everything from18 degree weather to temperatures in the 7 1/64 scale Junkyard Diecast Diorama: The Graveyard Some of these lost souls will donate parts to give a second life to other vehicles, while others are just waiting to be hauled off and scrapped. Chevy 3100 The 1948 - 1953 Chevrolet Series 3100 half-ton pickups benefited from a redesign that took Chevy trucks into a new era of comfort, convenience, and style. Chevy's restyled "Advance-Design" trucks were introduced in 1947, well ahead of its first new postwar cars, and little changed in appearance through 1953. The basic intent was to provide more room and comfort for occupants. All Advance-Design pickups had a new bench seat accommodating three persons, instead of the old separate seats -- and for the first time the seat was adjustable for leg reach. The cab, described as "Unisteel Battleship" construction, was larger in every direction. New extra-wide doors swung open on concealed hinges and extended down to cover the sills. Glass area grew considerably via a wider windshield, side windows, and backlight -- Chevy called the result "Observation Car Vision." Interiors were more colorful than ever before on a commercial Chevrolet, and the dashboard was functional and more glittery. Mechanical conveniences included interior door locks, a large steering wheel, new steering geometry for less effort, more conveniently positioned foot pedals, an accessory radio, roomy glovebox, and full needle instrumentation. The 1948-1953 Chevrolet Series 3100 half-ton pickups also featured "four-fold ventilation" through the easy-crank-down side windows, cowl-top ventilator, foot-operated floor vent, and a fresh-air inlet on the curb side of the cowl. Light-duty trucks in 1947-1949 came only with a 216.5-cid six; later ones may be 235.5-cid, formerly used in heavier trucks. For 1950, the 235.5-cid engine got a redesigned cylinder head, to become the "105 Hi-Torque" six. Changes through the period included gray (instead of body-color) inner grille bars for 1949; vent wings, a lower rear-view mirror, and elimination of left-hand cowl vents for 1951; pushbutton (instead of rotating) door handles for 1952; and a slimmer hood nameplate for 1953. Collectible Pluses of the 1948-1953 Chevrolet Series 3100 Half-Ton Pickups * Sleek styling * Plenty of examples to choose from * Strong collector support * Pickups lead all other body styles in value Collectible Minuses of the 1948-1953 Chevrolet Series 3100 Half-Ton Pickups * Not strong as an investment * Some body trim parts are very scarce Trucks on Indian Railway Tracks ! RO-RO (Roll-on/Roll-off) is the system of carrying wheeled cargo that are driven on and off a ship or train on their own wheels. This scene is from Indian Railway (Konkan Railway), shuttling between Mumbai and Mangalore where the road traffic is horrible. Trucks which would otherwise take close to 72 hrs by road now cover the same distance of 900km in 16 hrs by piggybacking on a freight train. Advantages for the Trucks are : - No wear and tear of the Trucks - No fatigue on the drivers - No hassles of bribing the cops at all the check posts - Short travel time It is really funny to see the truck drivers lazily sitting inside their vehicles, playing cards and passing time. Looking forward to Indian Railways introducing this system for carrying cars too. The only way to take a nap behind the steering wheel !!
