It's the Law

It's the Law

It seems that a day doesn’t go by without some kind of legislation involving animal welfare making headlines in the daily print and online newspapers across the country. Bills introduced on the local, state, and even national levels have become important issues carefully considered among aldermen, judges, city council members, state government officials, and senators throughout the country, because animal welfare has emerged as a major priority to an increasingly growing population of people--people who vote for the candidates to fill those offices. At Tails, we know that keeping current and understanding the legal issues as they pertain to our beloved animal companions--and all animals in general is important to our readers. This is why we’re pleased to launch "It’s the Law," a bi-weekly column written by Laura Allen, executive director of AnimalLawCoalition.com, a 501c4 non-profit, which brings the latest animal legal news to attorneys, law students and the public and offers legal analysis of the issues affecting animals. Animal Law Coalition (ALC) takes the fight to stop animal cruelty to Congress, state legislatures, local governments, and courts. ALC educates the public on how they can participate and take control of government agencies to stop cruelty and promote animal welfare. ALC is actively involved in litigation for animals and legislation relating to animal cruelty, breed discrimination, cruel killing of shelter animals with carbon dioxide gas chambers or heartstick, tethering of dogs, pound seizure, devocalization, pet rentals, puppy mills, animal fighting, humane treatment of farm animals, horse slaughter, and wild horses and burros issues.
Laura Allen received her law degree from Washington University and has been a trial attorney in the state and federal courts for more than 20 years. She has tried dozens of cases and has also argued appeals in state and federal courts in Missouri, Illinois, Washington, and Arizona. In addition to founding Animal Law Coalition, she is a member of the Board of Directors and general counsel for Equine Welfare Alliance, a member of the Board of Directors of Animal World USA, a regular guest on animal protection issues on Big Blend radio and WFL Endangered Stream Live radio and on the advisory boards of Saving America’s Horses – A Nation Betrayed; Miami Coalition Against BSL, Wild Capture Awareness, Companion Animal TV, and Animal Advocate Television. Allen lives in New York with her husband, Russ Mead, General Counsel of Farm Sanctuary, and their two dogs and three cats.

The Arizona Republic
Nov. 28, 2005

President Bush will spend most of this afternoon in Arizona discussing border issues and politicking, but war protesters also will put the spotlight on the Iraq war.

Bush is scheduled to arrive at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson for a midafternoon briefing with U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff reportedly will accompany Bush, who is expected to make remarks on border security and immigration reform before the briefing.

Later today, Bush will fly to Phoenix to speak at a $1,000-a-plate fund-raising dinner for Republican Sen. Jon Kyl at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. Kyl faces a challenge for his seat next year from Democrat Jim Pederson in what is expected to be an expensive campaign of nationwide political interest.

A coalition of Arizona groups opposed to the Iraq war plans to gather at 4 p.m. at 24th Street and Camelback Road, march to Kyl's nearby office, then parade to the Biltmore entry road.

The president is scheduled to stay overnight at the Biltmore, departing in time for a 9:15 a.m. meeting with Border Patrol officials in El Paso.

The specific route of his motorcade was not disclosed.

Mailing the credit dispute

The last time I paid my credit card bill I noticed a couple of charges from Austrian airlines and the foreign currency conversion charges even though we have never been to Europe. Someone used an old card hubby had lost and we had cancelled months before. They are not supposed to let those charges go through, and yet there were hundreds of dollars of fraudulent charges on our statement. We received the dispute statement in the mail today, and here is hubby mailing the signed statement back to them.

Note the huge SUV that could not wait at a reasonable distance, just chomping at the bit to belly up to the mailboxes.

The Union Credit Union

The Union Credit Union

Demaris Krummel, CEO, The Union Credit Union shares historic labor union milestones at a press conference.

For weeks people in Spokane have been asking the same question, “What is it?” “It” has been on TV. Mystery billboards went up around the city with “It just works for me”-and nothing else. No name. No logo. No clue where “it” came from or what “it” means.

Where did it come from?
Is one person or business behind the campaign? No.
The Union Credit Union created the campaign to honor unions and union workers. “It just works for me” is much larger than the credit union itself, honoring all that unions do for their members and all that unionized employees do for their employers. “It” is union pride.

Giorgio Armani profits up 80%, but no plans to list

China led the way for Giorgio Armani SpA’s full year results, which saw sales rise by 4.6 percent to EUR 1.59 billion.

Net profits increased by 80 percent to EUR 161 million for fiscal 2010, compared with EUR 88.8 million for 2009. Chairman and founder Mr. Giorgio Armani said the figures were “very positive” for the company, reflecting Armani’s “capacity to react promptly to the difficulties originating from the crisis that affected both the fashion and luxury sectors.”

Sales in China rose by 36 percent, boosted by the company’s EUR 91 million investment at extending its global store network under which 81 new stores opened in 2010. Overall sales in the Far East accounted for 17 percent of total sales, Europe for 33 percent and North America with 22 percent.

As rumours surrounding a possible IPO for the group build, Mr. Armani took the opportunity this week to speak to Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, in which he stated that he had no plans for a listing or sale of the company:

"I have always associated good cash liquidity with the concepts of independence and solidity," said Mr. Armani, adding that "This way, the advantage is in being able to fix unforeseen situations or take advantage of important opportunities."

Although Mr. Armani said he would not exclude possible acquisitions in the future, he was keen to emphasise that they would be a “novelty” for the company.

Profits of War

Profits of War

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, while the persecution of leftists continued, corporate leaders on the extreme right, continued their criminal rampages in pursuit of profit. Although Rockefeller’s many links to Nazism are too numerous to list here, a few examples are worth noting. In the 1920s, Exxon entered into partnerships with Germany’s top chemical cartel members, BASF and I.G. Farben. The Bank for International Settlements, which helped fund the Nazis before and during WWII, was created in 1930 by the world’s central banks, including the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. Its creation was inspired by the Nazi government and its bankers. Its first president was Gates McGarrah, a Rockefeller banker formerly of Chase National Bank and the “Fed.”

In 1932, Chevron struck oil in Bahrain and was soon operating in Saudi Arabia. In 1933, when Hitler seized power, Standard Oil New Jersey supplied Germany with the patents it required for tetra-ethyl lead aviation fuel.

Grandma Mabel 1911

Grandma Mabel 1911

One day, when she was seventeen and he was twenty-nine, Grandma Mabel and Grandpa Fred went into town and got married. My cousins say that they intended to visit one of her sisters, (perhaps to spend the night?), but the sister wasn't at home. When they came back home to tell her parents her father locked her in her room for the night. I'm sure that all sorts of yelling went on. Her parents called their minister and they called a lawyer. Great Grandma Sarah told the lawyer to make Mabel get a divorce. The lawyer turned to Grandma and gently asked if she wanted a divorce, and she said "no". He smiled and turned to Sarah and said, "If she doesn't want a divorce I can't make her get one."
Her parents then held another wedding, thinking the one by the JP wasn't good enough. The marriage lasted 52 years.
You can see that this dress has been hemmed very badly, maybe even on a machine (a crime!), and there's something funny going on with the buttoned plaque near the bottom of the bouquet. That hem certainly has not been pressed. She may have borrowed the dress from a sister or a friend. I always thought she wore her graduation dress when she got married, which Dad still has, but maybe that's the one she wore when she eloped and this one was from the later wedding. There is a paper napkin that she saved from the reception, which has a date written on it that is about a week later than my cousins say she was married.

I love the ironic smile on her face. I wonder when grooms were eliminated from wedding photographs? Grandpa took this shot, no doubt, but I wish there was one of the two of them together dressed up for their wedding.

It was interesting talking to Bruce, and Bill had a good conversation with his wife on medical issues. They were from New York and lived on Long Island. They both liked to travel around the world and not make reservations, just go and see what life will bring them. He looked and talked like a gangster from the big city. Maybe he was, who knows. We had a good time and a great meal.

Occupy London - St. Pauls Cathedral reopens.

Occupy London - St. Pauls Cathedral reopens.

Having initially told the Police to let the occupation exist the Chapter of St. Pauls Cathedral have since withdrawn their support last Saturday closed the Cathedral to for the first time since WW2.

Today the Cathedral reopened and the lunchtime Eucharist service had hundreds in attendance. Having cited health and safety concerns as a reason for closing the cathedral there were no noticable changes to the running of the cathedral or the service. The health and safety concerns have been refuted by the community of Occupy London.

St. Pauls are now seeking an injunction to remove the protestors, and the City of London Corporation are also seeking legal advice into removing the protestors. Rev. Giles Fraser has resigned from his role at St. Pauls as he cannot justify in his mind the use of violence and unrest to remove the protestors for the gain of the Church. He was still present at today's service.

Thorne North Doncaster South Yorkshire 30th Aug 1976

Thorne North Doncaster South Yorkshire 30th Aug 1976

I recently posted an LNER wooden sign and mentioned the North Eastern Railway cast iron trespass board near the entrance to Thorne North station. I had seen this negative in my file and always assumed it was another photo of the NER sign.

However it is actually a LNER cast-iron board by the embankment within the station limits which I suspect is rare. It probably dates from the early days after the 1923 Grouping because I can't imagine the cash-strapped railway company wasting money later in its life! After nationalisation British Railways very rarely replaced the pre-Grouping and Grouping trespass notices although later the non-existent railway company names would be painted over leaving just "Railway" picked out in white. Presumably this was following legal advice!

Liberty Cap at the top of Nevada Fall

Liberty Cap at the top of Nevada Fall

Here it is, another one of my favorites of the trip. I'm really glad I brought my 12-24mm here to allow me to take a clean shot of this at this distance to include the foot bridge, the river that leads to the top of Nevada Falls, and the entire Liberty Cap all in one shot. This shot was taken with my cheap plastic tripod, and merging 2 different shots of different exposure together with the old school method. The film guys would know what I'm talking about. ;-)

I love this place... seriously, such an amazing view, amazing place on 6,000 ft elevation. I swear I will be back, and better prepared. :)
