Dried-Out Dutch Iris - HDR

One of the spring flowers I like is the small, cololurful Dutch Iris. This is from a group of these Iris and for some reason (preoccupation on my part with other things) was forgotten until it had not just finished its flowering, but had dried out as well. Strangely, the dried, shriveled flower retained much of its colour. I picked it, took it indoors, clamped it in place with a large window on the left and placed a white reflector on the right. In this small version, some of the small detail is hard to make out, although you may see some of the spider web filaments that cling to the flower, for example. I just got around to processing it and like the results. - JW

This image was made 2 images taken using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 55-200 VR lense set to 160mm, ISO400, Aperture priority, f/11.0, 2 shots, one at 1/2 sec and one darker by a manually adjusted EV-1. The 2 images were not intended originally to be HDR processed by regardless, I used Luminance/Qtpfsgui with the 2 images, aligned them and obtained an HDR using the settings embedded in the file name, below. PP in GIMP: adjust the tone curve to darken the image , desaturate a slightly unpleasant orange cast in the bright area lower right, sharpen, add border and scale to 1024 wide for posting.

There?they hold a giant super-rich and classy birthday party for Domyoji and announce something very important. Domyoji, like in the first season, is engaged to a rich girl and heir. The only difference is that they are to be wed soon. What will Makino do?

Mist of Senja HD Timelapse

Midnigth mood while the morning mist is forming and enveloping the late summer landscape of Senja, North Norway during the sunrise.

This timelapse is shot between 01:40 and 02:40 in the morning of 2 August 2009. The sun is below the horizon as the season of midnight sun is just over. The pinkish flowers in the foreground of the opening are Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium), locally known as Geitrams. The lake in the backround is Grasmyrskogvatnet (roughly The Grassy Mire Forest Lake).

No Tripod
Timelapse shot without a tripod! I thought it would be too much bother to take it with me on the plane and boat from Oslo to Senja. Boy did I regret it when I arrived! But I made do with a wooden panel. It was more than sturdy enough, although it didn't lend the agility of a tripod. But then again, when shooting scenery you usually don't need to tilt the camera in odd ways...

The timelapse is made by a humble Nikon D60, holding the firing button down with a very custom made wooden plank and some buckets of paint for weight... :p The things you do when you don't have the proper equipment - like an automatic shutter releaser... Oh yeah. For the technique to work, you need the release mech. set to "continuous" and a relatively long shutter speed. I used around 2.5 sec per frame for this film. Some sequences are also shot with 2 sec per frame.

Hangups
I did have a few hangups, though, where the D60 stopped shooting, so I had to edit parts together to avoid showing off the glitsches. Without a proper tool to edit "larger than HD" images, i resorted to Adobe Bridge CS4 and the regular OS X file system to edit the project together. I did try FCP, but although it can edit HD, it proved way too cumbersome to set up for the job - especially since FCP doesn't work well with image sequences and matting and resizing of these for the codec I needed.

The camera was set to make small size JPEG's, as there is no need to shoot anything larger for HD video. Larger pictures would only take longer time to process, not to mention that you'd probably have to use extra processor power to size them smaller.

How I Did It
When I was done shooting I put each descrete image sequence into its own respective folder. I then assembled them quickly with Quicktime Pro to see my result, and spreading each part over further folders as I saw glitches and time jumps in the sequeces. Then I made a rough editors desicion list in humble text edit, just to know the sequence of the sequences (LOLZz d'Oh).

Then I started renaming each sequence of images in each respective folder with numbers starting from 1 with the first sequence in the EDL, and simply continued renaming the other folders following the list in the text file (the EDL). There's a nifty tool for this in Bridge called the "Rename Tool". Who could guess!

999 Images
When this was done, I simply moved all the renamed files from their respective folders and into the same folder. It actually ended with exactly 999 images, thus the first sequence was renamed 001.jpg to 107.jpg, and the second sequence with the hayballs renamed from 108.jpg to 206.jpg, and so on.

You can use the built in file handling system in Bridge to make directories and move files and so on, but somehow I ended up using the regular Mac Finder (Microsoft Explorer equivalent) for most of these tasks.

When all the images where aptly numbered to their respective sequence and moved to the same folder, I used Quicktime Pro to assemble the files into one large film, and then Adobe Media Encoder to encode it into the finished 720p HD mp4 film in H.264 codec.

"Pre" Post Processing
I did do some "post processing" of the images, by the way. In this case it's more like pre processing. I had some dust on the lens that had to be removed "in post", and without regular postprocessing programs like After Effects or Combustion, I simply resorted to trusty old Photoshop. It has a rather nifty batching tool, and thus it was simple to record a few actions, pointing out the culprits and removing them with the "dust and scratsches" filter in a few simple Photoshop batches. In retrospect, I probably could have done a lot more, like image sharpening and colour grading, but I didn't bother - and probably won't now that the film is published.

1. Deadly Tornado in Greensburg Kansas caused damage to over 95% of the town. There's a lot of concern for family members they can't locate.
2. Florida counties disaster areas, following tornadoes that killed at least 20 people and left hundreds of homes destroyed.
3. Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas. The first, at about 6:00 PM damaged or destroyed 300 homes in Piedras Negras, Mexico, just across the Rio Grande River. Three people were killed and about 80 injured.
4. About 50 tornadoes touched down from western Nebraska to the Texas Panhandle. One of them destroyed a house 2 miles southeast of Elmwood, Beaver County, Oklahoma and killed a 59-year couple
5.At least 18 people died in five separate tornadoes. In Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama, five boys and three girls were killed in the destruction of Enterprise High School.
6. A tornado hit the Gentilly section of New Orleans causing one death and 29 injuries.
7.The 20 deaths were in Lake County, at two locations 20 miles apart. Two separate tornadoes were involved. The first one at the west edge of the county caused seven deaths in the rural south end of Lady Lake. The second tornado, at the eastern end of the county, killed 13 in the Paisley-Lake Mack area. A third tornado produced F1 damage in Volusia County.
8. First killer tornado of the year cut a path across the southeast part of New Iberia, Louisiana. Two women were killed and 15 people were hospitalized as two dozen or more homes were destroyed.

This shot is of flower beds in Les Sables D'Ollone during a season when the Tour De France passed through. On August 29th the annual Spanish Vuelta cycling race began. It is on TV for free on TVE from Spain [on satellite] and also (less frequently) on Eurosport 1 Maybe if you are interested in cycle races this will act as an 'aide memoire'. Do consider the weight of these plants. It is popular to grow them mounted onto hardwood boards and hung up on a trellis or planted in a hanging basket suspended from a secure point on the ceiling. In warmer areas they can be attached directly to the trunk of a tree that does not shed its bark.Brush box,cassurina,bloodwood,palm tunks are suitable hosts.

Unlike many species P. superbum doesn’t produce plantlets (pups) which is normally the quickest method to produce new plants. If you wish to propagate new plants then spore propagation is the only method available.
Platycerium Superbum and p.bifurcatum may also be propagated from its spores. To collect the spores, place the part of a frond that is producing spores in a brown paper bag. Leave the frond in the bag until there is brown dust in the bag, which are the spores. Fill a plastic or terracotta pot with peat moss, and pour boiling water through the peat moss to sterilize it. Immediately place a glass or plastic sheet over the pot to keep it sterile. Once the peat moss has cooled down, spread the spores evenly over the surface of the peat moss, then immediately replace the glass or plastic sheet over the pot. Stand the bottom of the pot in an ice cream container with a shallow layer of water, and place the pot and container in a warm position receiving indirect sunlight. Once the spores have germinated, a green scum will initially appear over the surface of the peat moss. After a period of weeks to months, the fronds of the fern will begin to appear and the glass cover of the pot can be removed. Once the new plants have grown larger, they can be transferred to a tree trunk.

The basic principles are to firstly ensure all material is collected fresh and ripe. The spores change colour through their life, starting off green (unripe), shiny brown (ripe) to fuzzy/ dry brown (spores dispersed). Collect the section of frond with spores into a paper bag. Sow onto a layer of sterilized coir based compost. You could try sterilizing broken down fern material; preferably of the same species as if it is not adequately sterilized you may find the other species growing in competition with your fern.

The easiest containers to use are full sized seed trays. They have a few drainage holes and can be easily sterilized with hot water. To ensure they stay sterilized wear disposable rubber gloves and place the spores on the compost mix as soon as sterilized. Then place under a glass sheet (for light).

I did get one that I really liked, but then I never really go to the types of parties where you can justify wearing such a pretty dress as this. Shopping for a holiday feast

It just so happens that Houston's premier gourmet grocery store, Central Market, is right down the street from my apartment. I buy most of my fruit, veggies, cheese, fresh baked bread, fish, meat and flowers there, but I also shop at Krogers on the way home from work. Today I am getting fresh catfish and a few other items for my Fourth of July feast.

Addendum: I have been out and about for twenty years starting in December 1990. Unlike many T-girls, I started my en femme ventures by shopping ... years before I ever went to a nightclub or TG support group meeting. I know a girl who was on hormones several months before she ever went to a grocery store as her new self. Isn't survival more important than merely looking sexy? I started with the basics long before I went full time almost a dozen years ago.

Fun displays such as the SUPERMAN 'Pop Art" which inspired a Superman costume of flowers to the serious & heart-wrenching flower display of the Japanese Internment Camps of WWII reflecting the sadness of the paintings from the camps.

ADDA and his MOM, JACKIE, spent a wonderful afternoon enjoying the explosive colors and the unique designs of the floral displays.

Aluno pixador expőe sua tese na Belas Artes de Săo Paulo

"Vagabundo! So porque nao tem trabalho quer estragar o meu" urrava uma das alunas em meio a comocao causada pelo formando Rafa Pixobomb nesta quinta-feira a noite, na exposicao de final de curso de artes visuais do Centro Universitario Belas Artes. Artista e pixador formado pela ilustre escola das ruas e predios escalados na grande babilonia da garoa, Rafa Pixobomb e morador de Barueri, zona oeste da regiao metropolitana da Grande Sao Paulo – e gracas a uma bolsa de estudos, universitario em fase de tese de conclusao de curso.

Tudo parecia tranquilo no saguao que abriga a galeria central da universidade, onde telas, videos e instalacoes produzidas pelos formandos da vez estavam expostos conforme o previsto. Alunos, pais orgulhosos e professores transitavam pelo bulevar de entrada, quando a maior intervencao artistica jamais vista numa faculdade de arte comecou a tomar forma. Na infantaria, Rafa, de camiseta enrolada na cara e latinha na mao invade a galeria e comeca a pixar uma das paredes: "e voce...", rapidamente, uma das maes esbofeteia a cabeca do aluno com um buque de rosas brancas, e na sequencia um dos transeuntes, indignado, empurra o pixador com entusiasmo. Confusao. Outro pixador ja tinha invadido e pintado outra parede, e entao um dos segurancas da faculdade comeca a usar forca fisica.

Mas a essas alturas o mutirao que reuniu cerca de trinta pixadores de uma safra bem significativa da cidade ja tinha pintado o outro predio, as paredes de fora – e conforme a tradicao, em alturas inalcancaveis – o hall de entrada, o primeiro lance de escadas. Arte como crime, crime como arte, frases como "antes o barulho ensurdecedor", fazendo mencao ao TSSSssss ecoando das latinhas; "Abra os olhos e vera a inevitavel marca na historia", com gosto do choque inedito entre academia e rua; e "As belas das artes", em homenagens as indignadas cocotas universitarias. E agressivo, e forte e causa desordem no pensamento dos espectadores, pois sao essas letras pixadas por um bando de malucos semi-suicidas que servem de buraco de fechadura para questoes sociais profundas e hiper abandonadas pela percepcao intelectual e humanistica da classe media em geral. E da-lhe tempo ao tempo.

Foi interessante ver a reacao mega reacionaria de jovens estudantes de arte. Quem estuda arte hoje em dia parece nao sentir o espirito do maior movimento estetico da atualidade em Sao Paulo, so o calafrio. Esta em todos os cantos. No pico dos predios mais altos, nas janelas, nos muros e trens. E feio ne, com a estetica maltratada de quem so se fodeu na vida mas tem forca inesgotavel pra escalar 20 andares, cair, levar choque, ter convulsao a beira do tiete, sempre com a latinha na mao pra existir. E o barulho de fato e ensurdecedor. O que sera que esses meninos dizem e com quem dialogam ao arriscar a propria vida, a levar geral toda hora da policia, a subverter a visao urbanistica da cidade? E porque sera que eles nao tem medo?
Talvez a resposta seja grande demais, e comeca com a frase que Rafael Pixobomb jamais terminou: "E VOCE...".

E o pau comeu solto mesmo foi na rua, violencia, porrada, latas voando, segurancas nervosos, uma serie de cameras. Parece que a Folha de Sao Paulo ate chegou a tempo de pegar alguma coisa. Da sala de seguranca para a delegacia, Rafa e mais meia duzia de pixadores que nao arredaram o pe de la – modalidade quase inedita na pixacao ja que tudo sempre deve acontecer o mais rapido possivel para a fuga ser certeira – ficaram detidos um bom tempo.

Art-Attack: pixador student explains his thesis at the Fine Arts in Sao Paulo

"Vagabundo! Just because work has not either spoil my urrava one of the students in the midst of commotion caused by forming Rafah Pixobomb this Thursday the night, the end of course exhibition of visual arts of the University Center Fine Arts. Artist and pixador formed by the illustrious school of the streets and buildings in large scaled babilonia of garoa, is resident of Rafah Pixobomb Barueri, west side of the metropolitan region of Greater Sao Paulo - and thanks to a grant of studies, university being thesis of completion of course.

Everything seemed calm in the foyer that houses the university's central gallery, where paintings, videos and installations produced by the time the trainees were exposed as required. Students, parents and teachers proud transiting through the boulevard of entry where the greatest speech ever seen in an artistic power of art began to take shape. In the infantry, Rafah, in the face and shirt rolled latinha in hand invades the gallery and starts pixar one of the walls: "are you ...", quickly, one of the mothers esbofeteia the head of the student with a bouquet of white roses, and a sequence of passersby, angry, pushes the pixador with enthusiasm. Washington's Cherry Trees

History of the Cherry Trees
in Washington, D.C.

The plantings of cherry trees originated in 1912 as gift of friendship to the United States from the people of Japan. In Japan the flowering cherry tree or "Sakura", as it is called by the Japanese people, is one of the most exalted flowering plants. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with evanescence of human life and epitomizes the transformations Japanese Culture has undergone through the ages.

1885: Mrs. Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore,upon returning to Washington from her first visit to Japan, approached the Superintendent of Public Building and Grounds, Colonel Spencer Cosby, with the proposal that cherry trees be planted along the soon to reclaimed Potomac waterfront. Her request fell on deaf ears. Over the next 24 years Mrs. Scidmore approached every new Superintendent with her proposal with no success.

1906: Dr. David Fairchild, plant explorer and U.S. Department of Agriculture official,
imported 75 flowering cherry trees and 25 single-flowered weeping types from the Yokohama Nursery Company in Japan. He planted these on a hillside on his own land in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where he was testing their hardiness.

1907: The Fairchilds, pleased with the success of the trees, began to promote Japanese flowering cherry trees as the ideal type of tree to plant along avenues in the Washington area. Friends of the Fairchilds also became interested and on September 26, arrangements were completed with the Chevy Chase Land Company to order 300 Oriental cherry trees for the Chevy Chase area.

1908: Dr. David Fairchild gave cherry saplings to boys from each District of Columbia school to plant in their schoolyard for the observance of Arbor Day. In closing his Arbor Day lecture, Dr. Fairchild for the first time expressed an appeal that the "Speedway" (the present day corridor of Independence Avenue, SW, in West Potomac Park) be transformed into a "Field of Cherries". In attendance was Eliza Scidmore, whom afterwards he referred to as a great authority on Japan.

1909: Mrs. Scidmore decided to try to raise the money required to purchase the cherry trees and then donate the trees to the city. As a matter of course Mrs. Scidmore sent a note to the new First Lady Helen Herron Taft outlining her new plan. First Lady Taft had once lived in Japan and was familiar with the beauty of the flowering cherry trees. Two days later the First Lady responded:

Thank you very much for your suggestion about the cherry trees. I have taken the matter up and am promised the trees, but I thought perhaps it would be best to make an avenue of them, extending down to the turn in the road, as the other part (beyond the railroad bridge ) is still too rough to do any planting. Of course, they could not reflect in the water, but the effect would be very lovely of the long avenue. Let me know what you think about this.

April 8: The day after Mrs. Taft's letter of April 7, Dr. Jokichi Takamine, the Japanese chemist famous as the discoverer of adrenaline and takadiastase, was in Washington with Mr. Midzuno, Japanese consul in New York and when told that Washington was to have Japanese cherry trees planted along the Speedway, asked whether First Lady Taft would accept a donation of an additional 2,000 trees to fill out the area. Mr. Midzuno thought it was a fine idea and suggested that the trees be given in the name of the city of Tokyo. Dr. Takamine and Mr. Midzuno met with First Lady Taft, who accepted the offer of the 2,000 trees.

April 13: Five days after First Lady Taft's request, the Superintendent of Public Building and Grounds initiated the purchase of 90 Fugnezo Cherry Trees (Prunus serrulata "Fugenzo" from Hoopes Brothers and Thomas Co., West Chester, Pa. The trees were planted along the Potomac River from the present site of the Lincoln Memorial south toward East Potomac Park. After planting it was discovered that the trees were not correctly named. The trees were determined to be the cultivar Shirofugen (Prunus serrulata "Shirofugen" and have since disappeared.

August 30: The Japanese Embassy informed the Department of State that the City of Tokyo intended to donate 2,000 cherry trees to the United States to be planted along the Potomac River.

December 10: 2,000 cherry trees arrive in Seattle from Japan.

1910: January 6, trees arrive in Washington, DC

January 19: To everyone's dismay, an inspection team for the Department of Agriculture found the trees were infested with insects and nematodes and other diseases. To protect American growers, the department concluded that the trees must be destroyed.

January 28: Consent was given from President Taft to burn trees.

This diplomatic setback resulted in letters from the Secretary of State and representations to the Japanese Ambassador expressing deep regret of all concerned. Dr. T

MAGNOLIA CLAY FLOWER CAKE TOPPER

This is a popular "deconstructed" magnolia cake flower that has been in many bridal magazines. Now you can have one for your wedding cake and have it as a keepsake too! The magnolia flower can be pink and yellow with a gold center or it also comes in ivory. This particular flower pictured has a yellowish orange and hand-painted with metallic gold paint center, the petals are a soft pink that are also hand-painted with yellowish orange hues to a deeper mauvish pink. Absolutely gorgeous.

The base of the flowers have floral wire and are wrapped with floral tape. Please advise your pastry chef to insert the flowers in the cake just before it is put out for your reception. It should not be refrigerated with the flowers on the cake. To clean, simply take a damp towel to wipe of frosting/cake residue and let air dry.

Christmas Entry#3

For Christmas I didn't get a Wii or a new camera :/
I got this skirt that I've wanted for a while, a pair of jeans and tights, socks, a Justin Bieber shirt, a Gir shirt, a Keyblade key chain, and some hair clips.
From Devin I got a necklace, a ring, this nail polish I've wanted, flowers, and a photo album full of flowers that Devin pressed while he was in France (:
My mom gave me this really awesome nail art set that I wanted!
My nails look super awesome.
I got myself a treble clef necklace at Walmart (:

Oh, and like, $35.

My dad is giving me $200, which is more than enough to cover for my Rebel. I'm kinda excited. Honestly, I don't really want to accept this money, but I want this camera so bad, no one else is gonna help me get it but my mom, and she doesn't have much, so I don't wanna take her money!

Last week I spent about $120 on Christmas gifts, money that I was saving up for my Rebel, I was only $120 short so I asked my aunt if she could cover it for me until I get the money to pay her back and she said no. She said that she wasn't going to buy me anymore cameras, but she's NEVER BOUGHT ME A CAMERA BEFORE. I'll never understand why she keeps saying that. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
I was expecting her to say no. Why would she want to support what's meaningful to me? It's not like I'm her daughter or anything. It's not like I haven't been waiting for this for 2 years. It's not like I'm most likely going to make a living off of this. It's not like I don't even deserve this at all.
No, of course not.
She told me to ask my other aunt (from my mothers side) but I'm not going to do that because that would be kinda messed up! I never talk to her so I think it would be pretty messed up to talk to her JUST for money. I'd never do that. And what's the difference anyway, why can't she just cover it? Why make it difficult for me and ask someone else?
Anyway.
So, I cried for two days, I was VERY upset, I felt like I wasn't meant to be a photographer.
My aunt and uncle support everything my cousins do, my older cousin likes music so they got her a keyboard, my younger cousin (gets EVERYTHING SHE WANTS) likes guitar so my uncle got her a guitar and amp and everything for Christmas last year. He even pays for all of her guitar lessons and he wants to get her an acoustic guitar already! When I asked my uncle he laughed. Yeah, like I had any chances of getting anything from him, he always said that he's gonna treat me like one of his girls, but I have yet to see that. If I were to get treated like my younger cousin, I'd have everything my heart desires.
