20110616 0547 spheres at Point Cook Frog Dreaming by Maree Clarke & Vicki Couzens. This work is a large scale sculptural work featuring an abstract depiction reference „growling grass frog?, eggs. This is one of two works that were commissioned by the Walker Corporation, in partnership with VicUrban, for the new Point Cook Town Centre development. The artwork depicts a mass of growling grass frog eggs bound together in a clear mass, much as they would exist in their natural state. The work will measure 3249 mm (height), 5400mm (length) and 3334mm (wide) and will feature 40 stainless steel spheres, all of which will be sandblasted to ensure reflectivity is minimized. The eggs will be installed in such a way as to give the impression of floating in water, that is the top of the work will be an even line with the "eggs" grouped in a descending mass as they are naturally suspended. Four (4) spheres will be embedded in the ground underneath the work, representing the natural process of the frogs eggs maturing whereby they start to drop from the mass and settle in the mud at the bottom of the swamp. The artists have intended that their artwork will metaphorically represent the ties that bind a family and community together. Council has received copies of the engineering documentation for the artwork and is confident that the artwork is structurally sound. It is proposed that this work be installed at the rear of the Point Cook Library and Council?s traffic engineers have been consulted regarding the placement of the work and the appropriate off sets from the kerb. Maintenance of the work will not be onerous, with routine cleaning of the work to be incorporated into Council?s routine public art maintenance program. This artwork is a donation to Wyndham City Council from the Walker Corporation, and the only financial implications are the potential costs involved in maintaining the artwork. The proposed structures are robust and will withstand the rigours of being sited in a public open space and ongoing maintenance costs are likely to be minimal. Walker Corporation advised that the total budget for the fabrication and installation of the work by Maree Clarke & Vicki Couzens is approximately $120,000. The works are therefore a valuable addition to the Council public art collection. Wyndham Council agreed in principle to accept the artwork at, their meeting on 13 Sep 2010. SUCCESS!! My creation of Yunnan Sour Spicy Noodles ?????? Yippeeeeee! This is one of my utmost cravings. Other than the noodles and sambal oelek, the other ingredients are all western :P The veggies now look like the yunnan picked veggies but they are not. I'm really happy with the looks and the taste :) I used chopped Kale (boerenkool) cooked with some chopped bacon, some vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, gherkins, and pickled chillies all of which can be found in supermarket here in Amsterdam. Yes even soy sauce :P And the best part is that I don't use MSG :D (this photo is especially for Keung Jai) This should also qualify for 4 items of this month's scavenger hunt: 1. my passion :) and 8. red hot *see note* and 13. spicy AND 14. To check, use a pair of tongs to pull on the bone, if it's sticking it needs more time, if it comes out easily they're done. Make sure the ribs are covered in foil while cooking, I didn't get a picture of that. bento 6.4.08 I discovered a great butcher, Clancey's in Linden Hills, Minneapolis. They are sooo nice and everything is delish. For the barley dish on top, I used two of their beef / cherry / blue cheese sausages. Been on a whole-grain kick lately. Ingredients: 1/2 c barley (I soaked mine during the day for shorter cooking time) 2 sausages 1/2 onion 2 cloves garlic 4 tomatoes (from a leftover can of whole tomatoes) frozen corn frozen peas leftover red wine (could substitute balsamic or skip it) olive oil Cook barley. Towards the end, add the green peas and corn. Drain. Heat pan; add olive oil. Sear and cook sausages. Take out of pan, let rest. Slice into bite-size pieces. Add more oil if necessary; add onions and garlic. Add red wine; scrape bottom of pan. Then crush up tomatoes; add to pan. Add barley / corn / pea mixture, cook a few minutes to let the flavors marry. Corned Beef - Cabbage Last night I made corned beef for dinner. I remember having it fairly often when we were young kids and really liking it. I have only made it 1 other time in my adult life and having to throw it out because I mistakingly trimmed off the fatty layer before cooking it. Randy does not like it all so this was the first time since our first year of marriage that I have tried it again. This time I roasted it in the over, it was allright, I think if I ever make it again I will boil it and then maybe roast it to dry it out a bit. Mickey's has fed many a celebrity who have graced the stages in town, in particular from the Prairie Home Companion at The Fitzgerald's Theatre which is just a few blocks a way. Laura and I actually celebrated our anniversary a couple of years ago by going to the Prairie Home performance and capping it off with dinner at Mickey's. It's a classic, open 24 hours diner with the traditional greasy spoon dishes, which I like a lot! Just don't watch the cook - you may not want to see the a typical cooking procedures! It has been featured on the Food Network program Feasting On Asphalt, as well as many other travel cooking shows. I tell ya, it's the place to be! This is a single image HDR and it's not the image I wanted to produce, but it's the one I could get at the time, just before sun up and only a few minutes before my appointment. Rabbit; Ghadira Nature Reserve, Malta Spotted this little fellow on my way back from one of the hides at the Ghadira Nature Reserve in Malta. It took me a bout 100 yards and 20 minutes stalking to get this shot! Rabbit (fenek) is the unnoficial national dish of Malta; From Wikipedia: Perhaps because the Knights of Malta - who could eat rabbit any time they chose and enjoyed hunting them for sport - prohibited the islanders from eating rabbit with the one exception of L'Imnarja, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul held at the end of June, or maybe because most Maltese families kept rabbits as courtyard animals destined for the pot, rabbit is very popular and one of the most well known Maltese dishes, one of the few served in restaurants. The rabbit, often previously marinated, is lightly browned with garlic and herbs, then simmered for several hours, ideally in a terracotta casserole, in red wine or in a rich tomato sauce. Restaurants usually serve it with chips (the ubiquitous British legacy) and salad, though crusty local bread to soak up the rich sauces and a cooked green vegetable are more appropriate. Traditionally rabbit stew is served on spaghetti. The meal based on spaghetti with rabbit and rabbit stew is called "Fenkata" (from fenek = rabbit) and for many it is the unofficial national dish. Nullarbor Plain - South to West Best viewed really LARGE This was my holiday...Day 6 WA into SA aboard the Indian Pacific for the trip home...believe me, the Plain from the West, right around to the South again, looks exactly the same! The Nullarbor Plain is a vast, treeless, flat, limestone plain covering 270 000 square kilometres. It is 50 m - 200 m above sea level, extending for 2000 km across the southern parts of Western Australia and South Australia, south of the Great Victoria Desert, and adjacent to the Great Australian Bight. Its name is Latin for 'no trees'. About 25 million years ago it was the bed of a large sea, but has been uplifted by earth movements. It is also Australia's largest karst (weathered limestone) terrain, containing 200 000 km2, about twice the size of England, of various features caused by dissolution and weathering of limestone. In fact, it is the world's largest single piece of limestone, covering the plain with a 15 m - 60 m limestone layer. The Indian Pacific Train (which links the Indian and Pacific Oceans from Perth to Sydney and can be up to 2.4 km's long) stops at a re-watering station at the town of Cook. Cook has no water of course, the Nullarbor only gets around 200mm of rain in an average year, so the water is trucked in from Wyalla some 400km's away!! Cook's sole reason of existence is to serve the Indian-Pacific Railway - most of its inhabitants (well.... all two of them, lol) work for the railway. Apart from the train station, this bland little settlement boasts a shop and even a hospital. Judging by the signs at the station, living on the Nullarbor must be quite healthy. One gives you the advice: "If you're crook, come to Cook." A second one is more blunt: "Our hospital needs your help. Get sick!" You'll also learn that you're actually looking at the longest stretch of straight railway in the world. Due to the incredible flatness and the extent of the plain this piece of track has no curves for 479 km! Kiss the cook? Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta, Pantherophis alleghaniensis) Credit where credit is due. I didn't find this Rat Snake for myself either. Another of the "cousins" Eric was manning the Barbeque on the porch and spotted this large male traveling down the gravel driveway. This snake was only feet from where the first Rat Snake had been spotted earlier in the day. Male # 2 measured 5' 5" (165 cm) and was much fiestier than the earlier visitor. A bite from a large, healthy, wild Black Rat Snake is a minor annoyance that I am honored to endure. Being slightly more defensive than his previously photographed counterpart this male was happy to stand his ground and let me make a few photos of him. Shortly after this photo was snapped he gave a warning shake of his tail and disappeared under the boulder. Please Note: I like to include scientific names with the descriptions of animals I photograph. Often the latin name is the only way to be sure we're all talking about the same animal. In this case that isn't necessarily true. Since the time that I got into Reptiles the Black Rat Snake has been known as Elaphe obsoleta, and the ratsnakes found in Canada were E. obsoleta. It seems that now the New World Rat Snakes are in the Genus Pantherophis and that the Black Rat Snake is called Pantherophis alleghaniensis. Ok, fair enough. I then also find some documentation speculating that the Eastern Ontario populations of Rat Snake (of which this is one) are a hybrid between the Grey Rat Snake Pantherophis spiloides and Pantherophis alleghaniensis. Whatever the scientists think it is can be fought out amongst themselves. To me it's a beautiful reptile that we have come close to extirpating from Canada.
