Happy Birthday to Me!

My Mom made the cakes, 3 of them, for my party. Oh, who am I kidding, she made everything for my party. I just went and did the shopping and paid for all of it, lots of good food, wine, champagne and beer to toast with. I toasted with lemon water! Really couldn't have asked for a better turn out and a better party!

I am a lucky girl to be blessed with such good friends and family, even my cousin Steve & his wife, Linda aka Blondie, came down from Vancouver , WA, bringing my Zia Thelma from Sunnyvale. My Mom traveled from Palm Springs. A good friend from high school, Caroline, and her daughter, Raven, came over from Burlingame, and of course, the contingency was here from Laney: Anne-Marie, Anthony, Naytasha, and Jodi too, who brought her Dad, Doug, and her wee ones, 3 year old Malakai and infant baby daughter, Istas, my "god baby" that I have taken under my wing.

My new client, Kelda, stopped in briefly, was 1.5 hours late, and left after failing to perform, disappointing everyone, myself the most. My son, Sean, and good friend, Josh, a sound engineer, had spent a lot of time, setting up the sound and stage for her. She was very rude to do that. Time to look for new talent, more dependable client(s).

Open Mike

My oldest son, Sean, who will turn 20 in February, takes the mike at my 45th birthday bash and Christmas holiday party. He was there to help me celebrate, along with his GF, Czerena, and good friend Josh, but also to set up the sound for my client, hip-hop performing artist Keldamuzik aka Diva, who was to perform at my birthday, but ditched us at the last moment. As you may recall, Sean and Josh were both in the band, Ruth Way, and are still very talented musicians. Josh went onto Expressions College in Emeryville to study sound engineering for music production; Sean is still hoping to get into the IEBW electrical academy, but is now working for UPS. He is so handsome in that uniform!

This blank book can be used to write a journal, drawing, make a travel book or a guest book or as a decoration that will bring a French touch to your home.
The vellum is tainted to obtain the touch of an old vellum book and the pages are colored to give the color of an old paper (90 g/m2).
For the handbands I use two colors of threads sepia and brown same colors than the fore-edges.
The book is closed by a brown decorative ribbon with black Marie Antoinette Text, French Royal Carriage and a fleur de lys ".

This book will look better and better with time and will last hundreds years. Think of the pleasure when your children or grandchildren will still have this journal in there hands…

Inspired by the arrival of British colonists in the West Indies, this style combines the tropical and animal motifs of the Caribbean with a simplified Victorian elegance. Mahogany, dark walnut or teak furniture is paired with leather, wicker and cane inserts.

British Colonial Building, Yangon

There are more than 200 buildings dating from the colonial era in Yangon. While a few have been maintained or restored, most are in a state of serious neglect. They are all at risk of being razed by foreign investors to make way for low and mid-level development projects. This building is across the street from Yangon City Hall, another historical building. There is some local interest in preserving such buildings for historical purposes and to bolster tourism, but there are many challenges, and the clock is ticking.

Towards the Gardens

As far back as the time of the dowager empress Wilhelmine Amalie an orangery garden was laid out at Schonbrunn which included a hothouse for overwintering bitter orange trees. In 1754 Franz I Stephan instigated the building of the Orangery by Nicola Pacassi, probably to designs by Nicolas Jadot. One hundred and eighty-nine metres long and ten metres wide, the Schonbrunn Orangery is one of the two largest Baroque orangeries in the world, the other being at Versailles. The south facade is articulated by an alternating series of large and smaller apertures with rusticated pilasters decorated with masks. The interior has a rhythmic sequence of shallow vaults and is heated by a hypocaust system. The Orangery served not only as the winter quarters for citrus trees and other potted plants but was also a winter garden used for imperial court festivities. Joseph II was especially fond of holding celebrations in the Orangery with festively-decorated banqueting tables, ranks of flowering plants and illuminations in the citrus trees. During a winter festivity in 1786 Mozart conducted his Singspiel "The Impresario" here.

The rear part of the Orangery is still used in its original function, while the front section, which has been renovated, is used for events such as the Schonbrunn Palace Concert series.

PAINTED HALL AND TABLES

The Painted Hall at the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The Painted Hall, probably the finest dining hall in the Western world, is decorated with stunning paintings by James Thornhill, and is part of the King William Court. This was planned to be the hospital's dining hall. Wren submitted the designs in 1698, and the roof and the dome above were already in place five years later. Thornhill's decoration, by contrast, took nineteen years to complete. For his ‘great and laborious undertaking’ Thornhill was paid by the yard – and eventually knighted.

A view from the public balcony of the Australian House of Representatives. Australia has a two-tier parliamentary system with the House of Representatives being the lower house and the Senate the upper house. The 150 Representatives are elected for up to three years. In a reflection of the colour scheme of the British House of Commons, the House of Representatives is decorated in green. However, the colour is muted to suggest the colour of eucalyptus leaves. From the perspective above, the press gallery is ahead, with public galleries to the left and right. Sound-proofed galleries for school groups lie directly above these, as no talking is permitted when the House is sitting. Front-bench (Cabinet) members approach the table with the dispatch box, to speak. Back-benchers have a microphone on their desk, and merely stand to speak (unless they cannot stand). As is the custom with Westminster parliaments, members of the governing party sit to the Speaker's right, and the Opposition sits to the Speaker's left. Independents and minor parties sit on the cross-benches. The long benches (the front benches) closest to the despatch boxes are reserved for the Cabinet on the government's side and the Shadow Cabinet on the Opposition's.

Wine Rack for Joe and Kathy Black

Wine rack based on some dimensions taken from racks at Winter Haven's Bean and Grape. Design changes include back panel (original had vertical rails on front and back) and addition of reinforced face frame (desire to add doors at a future date needed the reinforced face frame). Also original only held 10 bottles per shelf, this version holds 11 ("Mine goes to 11!" - Spinal Tap) for a total of 110 bottles. The middle shelf is recessed to hold corks, with rabbets to hold a glass shelf panel.

Dimensions are 84 3/4" Tall, 48" Wide and 12 1/4" Deep. If I were to build anohter I would have spaced the shelves slightly further apart (1/4") to accomodate larger bottles. The rack will be finished by Joe (urethane or paint) - a stemware rack will be added to the middle shelf.

This was another "what if" moment... When this sunken library was in construction, I looked up and said "What if we did a catwalk around the room?"... This is the result- a rich wood-paneled two story library with a reading niche on the second level. The stained and scored concrete features a sharp navigational star design in the middle...

The paintings at the East Side Gallery document the time of change and express the euphoria and great hopes for a better and free future for all people of the world.
The longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall -- 1.3 kilometers (0.8 mile) long -- became the East Side Gallery. There, a Russian artist, Dimitri Vrubel, immortalized Honecker himself, depicting his famous kiss with former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.
The East Side Gallery is an international memorial for freedom. It is a 1.3km long section of the Berlin Wall on Muhlenstra?e in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, located near the centre of Berlin and consists of approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world, painted on the east side of the Berlin Wall. It is possibly the largest and everlasting open air gallery in the world. The first painting was started by Christine Mac Lean in December 1989 immediately after the fall of the wall. Paintings from Kasra Alavi, Kani Alavi, Jim Avignon, Thierry Noir, Ingeborg Blumenthal, Ignasi Blanch i Gisbert, and others have followed.

The Piano Lesson depicts the living room of Matisse's home in Issy-les-Moulineaux, with his elder son, Pierre, at the piano, the artist's sculpture Decorative Figure (1908), at bottom left, and, at upper right, his painting Woman on a High Stool. Matisse began with a naturalistic drawing, but he eliminated detail as he worked, scraping down areas and rebuilding them in broad fields of color. The painting evokes a specific moment in time—light suddenly turned on in a darkening interior—by the triangle of shadow on the boy's face and the rhyming green triangle of light falling on the garden. The artist's incising on the window frame and stippling on the left side produce a pitted quality that suggests the eroding effects of light or time, a theme reiterated by the presence of the metronome and burning candle on the piano.

The Tossed Trees of Dickens

Here is the collection of Christmas Trees which have accumulated on my block since Christmas. Most of these started to appear after New Year's day. A total of 21 trees (!) are currently decorating either side of the 15000 block of Dickens Street between Sepulveda Blvd and Noble Ave. More are accumulating on Dickens St east of Noble, but that's not my problem...

Where's Will Campbell when you need him, oh wait, it's not his problem either.

Now, I'm just trying to figure out if I should call 311 or Public Works or rent a trailer, collect all of them myself, plus however many more I can find and head out to the desert for one hell of a bonfire. Now that sounds like fun! Any takers on the desert idea?

well, I was told I could decorate the tree downstairs for christams, so decorate I will. (actully the folding came first, then the idea for decorating, but it's all the same.) all of this has been folded otu of regular copier paper (big stars= 1/2" by 14" strips of paper, little stars= 1/2" by 11" strip).

Skull Cupcakes for Halloween (9862)

Chocolate cupcakes filled with 'slime green' cream cheesiness and topped with buttercream skulls. Peanut M&Ms and chocolate Jimmies provide the decorative details.

Lessons: Use plain M&Ms for eyes since they're more uniform (some of those peanuts are huge) - or combine plain and peanut for a kooky look without worrying that the eyes will overwhelm the skull outline. Also, mini-chocolate chips would make a better nose (hole). Jimmies make cute "teeth," but buy a large container of Jimmies (the one I had is part of a four-compartment combo pack so it was slim pickings for similar sizes) and invest in a pair of kitchen tweezers.
