The bane of every offshore worker is the health and safety rep. That we had to watch a video on how to travel on a coach upon our arrival came as a shock, but then we hadn't seen Kazakh drivers.
Never go out on deck without two dozen pieces of safety equipment, and if you think you can get away with it at three Am, then there is always the CCTV cameras to record your crimes against health and safety.

Today in metro Detroit, Best Buy hosted Great Lakes Electronics Corporation drive to collect unwanted electronic equipment. They'll be taking apart the old gadgets to recycle as much of the materials as possible. They'll shred any hard drives and other memory devices to protect the donors' privacy.

I contributed a dead computer and monitor, a stack of "A" diskettes, a cordless telephone, a digital camera too old and primitive to be of interest to anyone, a printer, a pair of speakers, an external modem, a switchbox from back in the days when computers had only one peripheral connection, a VCR, and a bag full of cables of uknown provenance. All that junk had been sitting in my basement for years because I didn't want to add it to a landfill. So thank you, Great Lakes Electronics Corporation!

You can tell from the photo that the "least wanted" electronic gadgets were old computer monitors. I'd guess that large flatscreen monitors have really caught on.

A sandtrooper, or desert trooper, was an Imperial stormtrooper equipped with modified armor and equipment to withstand the harsh climates of desert planets like Tatooine.

They were nearly identical to standard stormtroopers except they had additional training in specialized areas and advanced cooling systems in both their helmets and suits that offered them protection from the relentless heat. Visual differences in armor included a distinctive 'diamond' shaped left knee plate, non-ribbed chest and back plate connectors as well as reinforced abdominal plating.

It was typical for non-commissioned officers (white and orange pauldrons) and above to remove the “drop boxes” on the waist; a redundant and unnecessary accessory given the upgraded load-bearing kit requirements for sustained operations with minimal resupply. Additionally, the usual thermal detonator worn by normal Stormtroopers on the lower back was not present, as its wear and access would be impeded by the typical SD-48 survival pack.

Their armor consisted of an 18 piece anti-blaster cocoon shell like that of a stormtrooper, but also had a heat-reflective coating worn over a temperature-control body glove. The sandtrooper helmet featured automatic polarized lenses, a built-in comlink, and breathing filters.

All desert sandtroopers carried E-11 blaster rifles, DLT-19 heavy blaster rifles, T-21 light repeating blasters, or RT-97C heavy blaster rifles, long-range comlinks, food, and water packs. Sandtroopers wore colored pauldrons as a designation of rank. A sandtrooper sergeant's pauldron was white, while an enlisted trooper's pauldron was all black. Squad leaders, who led units of seven troopers, wore orange shoulder pauldrons.

DIY Ring Flash

A ring flash is such a popular and easy DIY project that I finally couldn't resist the temptation to make one myself. I'll post some detailed instructions on how to make one (like this) when I have more time, but most of you should be able to figure out the essentials just by looking at the finished product.

Materials:

- plastic dome (originally intended for covering food in a microwave oven)
- a tin (sans fruit salad)
- something with male filter threads on it; I used a very cheap Cokin P filter holder clone
- aluminium baking foil

Total cost of materials (excluding paint and glue) was approx. €7 (and we ate the fruit salad from the tin; it's included as a bonus). Of course, a regular flashgun is also required, and with this method of mounting the flash you need some way to trigger it off-camera (optical triggering by the built-in flash would work nicely since light from the trigger flash is blocked by the dome).

One thing to consider with this method of construction is that the lens cannot have rotating filter threads (when zooming or focusing), because they almost certainly would not welcome having to fight the weight of the ring flash, and the flashgun position would change during focusing (mine doesn't fall even if it's under the ring, but I wouldn't count on it). The best lens for this is a prime with internal focusing (i.e. length doesn't change depending on focus), but an extending macro lens worked fine in my experiments. For flimsier lenses it is probably better to mount the ring on the camera somehow (e.g. with some kind of holder attached to the tripod threads), or hand-hold the flashgun above the ring instead of supporting its weight on it.

London Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast

HMS Belfast is a museum ship, originally a Royal Navy light cruiser, permanently moored in London on the River Thames and operated by the Imperial War Museum.

Construction of Belfast, named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Returning to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour, Belfast was the largest and arguably most powerful cruiser in the Royal Navy at the time. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950-52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.

Expected to be disposed of as scrap, in 1967 efforts were initiated to preserve Belfast as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and the Ministry of Defence was established, and reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical.
Following maintenance work, Belfast was repainted in a dazzle camouflage scheme officially known as Admiralty Disruptive Camouflage Type 25.

In 1971 the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The Trust was successful in its efforts, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971. Brought to London, she was moored on the River Thames near Tower Bridge in the Pool of London.

Opened to the public in October 1971 Belfast became a branch of the Imperial War Museum in 1978.
When Belfast was first opened to the public, visitors were limited to the upper decks and forward superstructure.
Today nine decks are open to the public. Access to the ship is via a walkway which connects the quarterdeck with the pedestrianised footpath on the south bank of the River Thames. The Imperial War Museum's guidebook to HMS Belfast divides the ship into three broad sections.
The first of these, 'Life on board the ship', focuses on the experience of serving at sea. Restored compartments, some populated with dressed figures, illustrate the crew's living conditions and the ship's various facilities such as the sick bay, galley, laundry, chapel, mess decks and NAAFI.
The second section, 'The inner workings', below the waterline and protected by the ship's armoured belt, contains core mechanical, electrical and communication systems. As well as the engine and boiler rooms, other compartments include the transmitting station (housing the ship's Admiralty Fire Control Table, a mechanical computer) the forward steering position and one of Belfast's six-inch shell rooms and magazines.
The third section, 'Action stations', includes the upper deck and forward superstructure with the ship's armament, fire control, and command facilities.
Areas open to the public include the operations room, Admiral's bridge and gun direction platform. To emphasise the range of the ship's armament, the forward six-inch guns of A and B Turrets are aimed at the London Gateway service area on the M1 motorway, some 12˝ miles away on the outskirts of London. One of the 4-inch gun mounts and a 4-inch shell hoist are kept in working order for use during blank-firing demonstrations by the Wavy Navy re-enactment group. The group also stage recreations of wartime activities, such as the battle of North Cape.
In 2002 Belfast introduced 'Kip in a Ship', allowing school and youth groups to stay onboard Belfast overnight, sleeping in bunks on a restored mess deck. In addition to the various areas of the ship open to visitors, some compartments have been fitted out as dedicated exhibition space. Permanent exhibitions include 'HMS Belfast in War and Peace' and 'Life at Sea'.

A popular tourist attraction, Belfast receives around a quarter of a million visitors per year.
As a branch of a national museum and part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection Belfast is supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, by admissions income, and by the museum's commercial activities.

The Westland Sea King HAR3 entered RAF service in 1978 and the 3A in 1996; both marks of aircraft are used in the Search and Rescue (SAR) role. The aircraft are operated from six locations around the UK, with each location supporting two aircraft. There is also a detachment of two HAR3s providing SAR cover in the Falkland Islands. The SAR squadrons provide 24-hour cover around the UK and the Falkland Islands throughout each year. Each squadron maintains a 15-minutes readiness state during daylight hours and a 45-minutes readiness state during the hours of darkness.

For the search aspect of its role, the Sea King is able to operate to precise navigational standards and is fitted with a multi-band homing system, satellite navigation systems, a search radar, a comprehensive avionics suite and a large selection of radios. For its rescue role, the aircraft is equipped with a hydraulically-operated main rescue hoist, an electrically-operated emergency rescue hoist and electrical connections suitable for powering medical equipment such as incubators. The SAR fleet of Sea Kings are fitted with a video/infrared detection pod, which is similar to the equipment used by police helicopters, to help search for casualties. All SAR crews are trained to operate using night-vision goggles over unfamiliar terrain. The standard SAR crew is made up of four members: two pilots, one of whom is the aircraft captain, a radar operator who acts as the winch operator at the rescue scene and a winchman, normally trained to paramedic standard, who will supply immediate first-aid and recovery services at the rescue site.

Studio reorg

Finally finished the re-organisation of my studio so I can have my Stanton monitors and Yamaha AN1X set up now and it's all nicely set up and accessible, oh and I can use a chair now (previously no room for a chair) so won't get sore back leaning over keys for hours.

Love how the last two letters of "Stanton" light up on the monitors when powered, so it reads "on" - pretty clever!

I know someone is going to scream about having the keyboard on top of the monitors or the AN1X spanning two desks (the white drawers are shorter than the wood unit) - meh!

And to the previous owner of the AN1X who disabled local MIDI/keyboard - you scared me when I turned it on and it didn't work!!
