a literal hornets nest

How did I not notice this monster sprouting out of my oven vent??? It's about 15' up, almost directly above the pool pump. I was out there every day starting the pool, backwashing the filter..... but I guess I'm a fairly quiet person and I didn't disturb them. The guy who came to fix my pump was less lucky. They freaked out over the power tools and attacked him. Luckily he got away with just one little sting because there were HUNDREDS of wasps in this thing. You could stand and watch as 40? would swarm out, hover a moment and then take off just as another 40 or so came in and the traffic was constant.

Fortunately, it has been dealt with and my pool pump has been put back together.

Well the pool is back . After tweeking cursing, filtering,
backwashing, vacuming, etc... The pool is in an acceptable state again.

We can't say the same about the computer. It appears that the video
card is damaged. I will have to call Dell to see if it is integrated
or not and what a new one will run.

Of all of the pictures I took in the Lake District, this has to be my favorite. I instead to write descriptions for each image eventually, but given that I only have five weeks left to write my final architectural thesis I'm afraid they'll have to wait. I do feel however, that this image deserves one. This is perhaps my favorite spot to take sunset photos of in the Lakes - I have several dotted throughout my photostream. This was taken on the final night of my trip - the weather had been a little unkind to us over the week I was there. But finally, on the last evening I was presented with this view.

Two photos were taken for this image, both using an ND8 grad filter to give the water the glassy, icy effect (wish it had been ice). The lower two thirds were exposed for 1 minute, whilst the upper third was exposed for 30 seconds. The two images were then carefully blended in photoshop. Doing this gives an illuminance to the water whilst retaining the deep colours of the sky. I hope you like.

So this is a cool little waterfall that is visible from Upper Falling Water Road in Ben Hur, Arkansas. It is a small feeder creek to Falling Water Creek. The coolest thing is it's located between two waterfalls featured in the Tim Ernst Guidebooks - Falling Water Falls and Six Finger Falls. There's a few other waterfalls along the road some featured in Tim's book and some that aren't. There's also some amazing view of Falling Water Creek along the way.

It's named after the 2009 MVP for FC Dallas - Jeff Cunningham. To get to Cunningham Falls from Highway 7 take Highway 16 into Ben Hur. About a mile past Ben Hur turn onto Upper Falling Water Road (FR# 1205). Drive down this road about 4.5 miles and you'll see Cunningham Falls on your left.

This waterfall is situated between two very steep hillsides. it's not a hard trip but does require a lot of caution to not slide down to the rocks below.

The advent of biodiesel has come to the rescue in such a warranting situation.

Efforts are being made to streamline the systems to produce biodiesels at economically viable rates and apply them in running the diesel engines in lieu of petro-diesel. And the present study is an attempt in this direction. It seeks to exploit non-edible oil plants, especially Jatropha, mahua and palm, to replace diesel oil usage in the conventional diesel engines. Providing transesterification procedure for all the three non-edible oils, it deals with the heat release rate calculations based on the pressure data collected in the combustion chamber. It also extends discussion on the instrumentation and experimentation, as well as the results of the findings.

Busy day yesterday working on fuel system, having spent Tuesday changing the engine oil and filter. (I'd also discovered, whilst looking around the engine compartment, that an engine mount nut was sitting beside the mount - completely adrift...!) I'd started with simple refuelling of the port tank from jerry cans & thought I'd better drain starboard fuel tank filter to check for water - found lots of water and dirt also so decided I'd better change the filter and clean the housing and sight glass,
all of which took quite a time. Then did the same for the other (port) fuel tank filter - in doing that, I discovered that the fuel intake pipe was splitting - so that meant it had to be cut back and re-attached.

Fortunately, having lots of other cruiser friends around meant I had no problem getting help pushing the pipe back onto the slightly over-sized fitting - not something I could have managed by myself! My helper was Heiko from 'Stenella' who, with Dianna & their two boys Stefan & Oliver, had invited me over for a fish meal that evening, along with the other cruisers from Cocos Keeling who are now all in Mauritius - very sociable evenings I'm having just now!! I'd spent all day with the smell of diesel
fuel, so it was nice to clean up and relax in company!

Today, I've spent a lot of time at the Internet cafe - but never enough time to do all I want... then I've a few more boat jobs to do, ready for leaving for Reunion tomorrow. I'd hoped to make for St. Pierre but if the expected SW swell is too bad by the time I get there on Sunday, it won't be possible to enter the harbour & I'll have to to the 'Le Port' (Galets) instead - I'll head for St Pierre initially & hope...

On the way north we had problems with the bus. We changed the fuel filter, so we thought, but after pushing on at lower than expected speeds and skipping our rest day we eventually found the filter had not actually been changed.

One time while investigating the problem, we drove with the engine cover in the bus floor open while we looked down at the engine and fan. Caroline, an ex jillaroo, was learning over dangerously. Her cigarettes fell from her overalls and for an instant she nearly tried to grab the pack as it fell into the fan.

Note extra bolts pertruding from crankcase cover just ahead of the oil filter/alternator adapter. These hold the crankcase oil separation baffle into place. I learned the trick of trimming the oil baffle so that it fits up into the crankcase cover from Marsh Hesler, former San Diego Corvair club member, now in Colorado. By trimming it, it is no longer sandwiched in between the cover and the crankcase. Therefore, you only use one crankcase cover gasket. I've found it prevents a common, annoying oil seepage spot as have many other's who have tried it.

Want a short cut to Elk Pass? It is right on the other side of this steep snow field, but better for you and the hillside to take the Pacific Crest Trail up and around to get there. The clouds didn't last long but provided for some cooler hiking during part of the hike.

Friday August 15th, 2008 I packed my packpack and drove to the Scatter Creek trailhead up the North Fork of the Tieton River (the road is about 8 miles on the east side of White Pass in Washington State).

I began my backpack at 2:15 pm, late in the day for me, but I wanted to take advantage of the small window of good weather to visit the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

Four and quarter miles up trail 1118 I intersected the Pacfic Crest Trail (still called trail 2000 by many). The junction of 1118 and the PCT is called Tieton Pass.

From Tieton Pass I headed south on the PCT to the half mile long dead end trail that leads down into McCall Basin.

I visited a nice couple with three beautiful pack horses and a dog, who were camped in the basin, then set up my new Northface tadpole 23 backpacking tent for one. It turned out to be a great little tent.

I camped within sight and ear shot of the North Fork of the Tieton River about 1/4 mile downstreams from a waterfalls.

That evening I took my Canon G9 and hiked a mile up to the upper McCall Basin (which is lovely). I hiked the length of the meadow and then to the top of the waterfalls that enters the basin. Great scenery. Flowers, deer, and snow fields everywhere.

Saturday August 16th, I left camp with a light day pack at 7:15 am. A fellow solo backpacker (from Gig Harbor) camped near me at McCall Basin joined me on the day hike.

We hiked through aromatic fields of lupine to Elk Pass, roughly 3.5 miles from our campsites in McCall Basin.

We spotted a big billy goat near Elk Pass and kept our cameras going constantly with the far off vistas and the wildflowers, marmots, meadows, snow fields, boulder fields, and everything else that caught our attention along the trail.

At Elk Pass we met a couple from St. Louis who were doing the "whole thing" - - that is the Pacfic Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. At times they put in 30 mile days. They were in great shape and obviously knew what they were doing.

From Elk Pass we hike over a mile toward Old Snowy Mt. where we could look down on the last saddle before the Old Snowy Mt. traverse of the PCT (two routes possible).

A herd of mountain goat were below us. Most were hard to photograph since they were on the snow and a long way off. A nannie and kid grazing in a lupine covered meadow offered us the opportunity to get a good "goat" photo in the "goat rocks".

The waypoint for the end of our day hike is (approximately): N46 31 25 W121 27 14 at just under 7,000 feet.
This position was exactly one mile by the lower PCT crossing of Old Snowy Mt. from the position I day hiked up to on the last day of July in 2008 (from Chambers Lake) and I could easily see where I had stood just a couple of weeks ago across the way.

We returned to McCall Basin camp to find it hot and the mosquitoes intolerable (for me). I broke camp, shouldered my backpack and by 3:45 pm was making my way back to my truck at the Scatter Creek trailhead.

I reached the truck at a little before 7:00 pm, happy for the wonderful country I had visited once again, and very happy to be out of the mosquitoes.

I had hike 9 miles with a day pack and another 6 miles with my backpack, which was plenty for me for the day. I couldn't imagine the St. Louis couple who were putting 25-30 miles a day in, with full packs.

The strobe I used is from a co-worker who used to shot film. He gave me his old Speedlite 177A. I used it hand held (with an 8 fold "bounty" paper towel filter) to light this shot.

I'm not sure if shot I this correctly, this is the first time I've used a strobe.

Three boats, 12th Street Beach

On a quiet Wednesday morning I walked from my hotel towards the Shedd Aquarium. Along the way you will be rewarded with a wonderful vista overlooking little bobbing boats in front of the city skyline.

If you keep walking, you will get to this little beach. It was probably 8.30am so no more than four bathers had yet found their way to this spot.

Shot with the M3 and the Summicron 50 on Fuji Acros with a #8 yellow filter plopped on. I developed in Rodinal/Adonal (1:50) with 4g of Sodium Ascorbate as I always do for 6:30min.

Cleaning Tanks

I am in my shower here cleaning a filter from the turtle tank. Today I did all the aquariums and it nearly killed me! My back was killing from bending over like that. The drain was really slow so I stuck a coat hanger down the drain and pulled up a god awful wad of hair larger than a Chihuahua!

This has been an abbreviated week for me since we had a day off on Monday. It has been a rather quiet week I'm happy to report. Now for some more knitting!

Identified by a part number on an aileron, the burnt wreckage of a Royal Aircraft Factory FE2 (Farman Experimental 2) is examined by a group of German officers. One thing is certain, no-one got out of this alive.

The vampire tap that supplies the water filter started to leak. Since this is on a solid copper supply line soldered to the faucet and not a flexible hose with screw on fittings it was not easy to replace, so I prepared to replace both the faucet (already had some issues) and supply lines.

Ogden water filter

Was under the sink in the Airstream, not plumbed in any more. Inside was an ancient filter clogged with crud. But cleaned up, I really like it. The knob on top unscrews and the lid comes off, but I haven't yet had any bright ideas about what to use it for.
