Scott Bakula 5 (FedCon XX)

Scott Bakula 5 (FedCon XX)

Scott Bakula played 'Captain Jonathan Archer' on 'Star Trek: Enterprise'. Before Star Trek he got well known for his portrayal of 'Dr. Sam Beckett' in 'Quantum Leap'. He also took part in movies such as 'American Beauty' next to Kevin Spacey and 'Life As A House' next to Kevin Kline and Hayden Christensen.

Background: I attended FedCon 20 (europe's biggest Star Trek & sci-fi convention) from april 28 till may 1 this year at Maritim hotel Dusseldorf International Airport. It was an amazing experience once again! I'm a huge Star Trek geek since age 12 and now I have the chance to meet all the idols of my past and present, primarily Wil Wheaton who was an important idol while I was a teenager. They were all so nice and likeable and we all had a lot of fun. I even met SCOTT BAKULA ('Cpt. Jonathan Archer' on 'Star Trek: Enterprise'), shook his hand and had quick chat! How fuckin' awesome is that? :-)

Davenport,IA--1962

Davenport,IA--1962

This aerial photo of downtown Davenport in 1962 looks quite a bit different than it does today. Many of the buildings have been torn down, replaced with others, or converted into parking lots or ramps. The double mainline railroad tracks are gone, now just a single line.

Note the large International Harvester logo on the building (left center) which is now gone. The Rock Island Lines depot (top center) is long gone; no need for a depot where over 60 trains a day once stopped.

Is progress really worth it?

Davenport Sunset

Davenport Sunset

I've been having a great time exploring the coast and discovering our wonderful vistas. That's the Davenport cement plant on the far right. I think it's been closed. Long ago there was a wharf there too. all that remains are a couple of rusting pillars. You can see them in the center of the image.

That's my feet. It was always strange to feel good about messing up the room without feeling bad about it everytime we checked in to the hotel.

  • Covent Garden is a district in London, England, located on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St. Martin's Lane and Drury Lane.

  • is a district of Greater London, England, on the border of the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Camden. It was known since the reign of King John (1199-1216) as "Convent Garden", being the kitchen garden for the monks of the convent of monks of St Peter, Westminster.

    fielding
  • Henry (1707–54), English novelist. He provoked the introduction of censorship in theaters with his political satire The Historical Register for 1736. He then turned to writing picaresque novels, notably Joseph Andrews (1742) and Tom Jones (1749)

  • There are 9 fielding positions in baseball. Each position conventionally has an associated number (from 1 to 9) which is used to score putouts. For example: *If the third baseman fields a ball and throws it to first, it is recorded as a 5–3 out.

  • English novelist and dramatist (1707-1754)

St James's Palace

St James's Palace

St James’s Palace is one of London’s oldest palaces. It is situated in Pall Mall just north of St James’s Park. Although no sovereign has resided there for almost two centuries, it has remained the official residence of the Sovereign and the most senior royal palace in the UK. For this reason it gives its name to the Royal Court The palace was commissioned by Henry VIII on the site of a former leper hospital dedicated to St James the Less from which the Palace and its nearby Park retain their names; the hospital was disbanded in 1532. The new palace, secondary in the king's interest to Henry's Whitehall Palace was constructed in the red-brick Tudor style around four courtyards: its gatehouse survives on the north side, flanked by polygonal turrets with mock battlements fitted with Georgian sash windows.
Two of Henry VIII's children died there:Henry Fitzroy, 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset and Mary I (Mary's heart and bowels were buried in the palace's chapel royal. Elizabeth I was said to have spent the night there while waiting for the Spanish Armada to sail up the channel. Charles I slept rather less soundly—as it was his final bed before his execution. Oliver Cromwell then took it over, and turned it into a barracks during the English Commonwealth period. It was then restored by Charles II (Charles I's son), who also laid out St James's Park. It became the principal residence of the monarch in London in 1698, during the reign of William III and Mary II after Whitehall Palace was destroyed by fire, and became the administrative centre of the monarchy, a role it retains.

The Strand

The Strand

The Strand starts at the end of Fleet Street (Temple Bar) which marks the boundary of the City of London at this point and enters the City of Westminster.

At the east end of the street are two old churches, St Mary Le Strand and St Clement Danes which are now, owing to road-widening, situated on islands in the middle of the road. The length of road from St Mary's church eastwards up to St Clement's was widened in 1900 and subsumes the former Holywell Street which forked from Strand and ran parallel with it to the north. The Strand marks the southern boundary of Covent Garden.

The Strand is the home for many famous buildings such as Somerset House, Essex House, the Savoy Hotel, once the Savoy Palace etc.

The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy is a chapel off the Strand and behind the Savoy Hotel dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was originally built in the medieval era off the main church of the Savoy Palace, later to become the Savoy Hospital. The Hospital was in ruins by the 19th century, and the Chapel was the only part to survive demolition

Dana Nature Reserve. Jordan.

Dana Nature Reserve. Jordan.

The Dana Nature Reserve (adult/student JD6/3) is one of Jordan's hidden gems, as well as its most impressive ecotourism project. Down off the King's Highway, and the main gateway to the reserve, is the charming 15th-century stone village of Dana, which clings to a precipice overlooking the valley and commands exceptional views. It's a great place to chill out and spend a few days hiking, reading and relaxing. Most of the reserve is only accessible on foot.

The reserve is the largest in Jordan and includes a variety of terrain, from sandstone cliffs and peaks over 1500m high to a low point of 50m below sea level in the Rift Valley of Wadi Araba, about 14km to the west. The red rock escarpments and valley protect a surprisingly diverse ecosystem, including about 600 species of plants (from citrus trees and desert shrubs to tropical acacias), about 180 species of birds, and over 45 species of mammals (of which 25 are endangered), including ibex, mountain gazelle, sand cat, red fox and wolf. The lower western areas of the reserve can be very hot in July.

Everything is laid out and ready to go. Running a marathon can become quite ritualistic - I'll admit that!

Ringo did NOT run the race but he certainly could have if he were allowed. He ran all my training runs with me - including three twenty milers and a weekend of three consecutive twelve milers. Plus he ran all Margo's training runs (Margo and I generally do not run together because of schedule differences) so he was in better shape that both of us put together.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Church of Saint Mary of Eunate is a 12th century Romanesque church located about 2 km south-east of Muruzabal, Navarre, Spain, on the Way of Saint James. Its origins are discussed due to lack of documentation. Its octagonal plan and the fact that it is not located in a present-day village or town but in countryside contribute to its enigmatic nature.

The church is built of dressed stone, its plan is a slightly irregular octagon with a little three-side apse. It presents the typical architectural features of the European Romanesque art (dressed-stone masonry, robust walls, semicircular arches, little windows made of alabaster, etc.) as well as some other local characteristics of the Romanesque in Navarre and Aragon, like the chessboard-shape decoration.

Its eight walls sustain an eight-rib vault, inspired in Cordova's caliphate art. This structure is very similar to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Torres del Rio, Navarre, 55 km far from Eunate and also on the Way of Saint James. The whole building is surrounded by arches that had been recently partially reconstructed. It is not sure that those arches were built at the same time that the church. It may be built centuries later using rests of a hypothetical disappeared cloister.

Today the church is a hermitage dedicated to the Virgin Mary and people from all the Valdizarbe valley use to celebrate there a traditional romeria. This function is the only unquestionable known use of the building as it is the only that is documented. The early documented reference to Eunate dates from 1487 and refers to a sodality devoted to the Virgin of Eunate. Nevertheless, the characteristics of the building, its location on the Way of Saint James and the comparison with other coetaneous religious buildings demands further explanation about the origin of the church.

Since late 19th century, there have been several theories about the original function and authorship of Eunate. Due to its octagonal plan, the first theories stated that Eunate was a Templar church, related with other central plan churches like the above mentioned Holy Sepulchre of Torres del Rio, and undoubtedly Templar buildings like the Templar convent of Tomar, the Temple Church of London or the Holy Sepulchre of Pisa, all of them inspired in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. This alleged Templar origin and the aura of mystery that surrounds the church have contributed to esoteric interpretations. Nevertheless, the presence of Knights Templar in this zone of Navarre is not documented, but it is very well known the importance of other military order, the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem or Knights Hospitaller, that could hold a hospital ('hostel') for pilgrims to Santiago. Archaeological excavations have found many burials and the typical St. James' shells.

sundial and gothic decoration in courtyard of Musée de Cluny, Paris

sundial and gothic decoration in courtyard of Musée de Cluny, Paris

The Musee de Cluny is a museum in Paris housing a collection of art from the Middle Ages: the Musee National du Moyen Age.

The museum stands on the site of a Roman baths complex (called the Thermes de Cluny). The building seen in this picture was built in the 15th-16th century as the Hotel de Cluny for abbot Jacques d'Amboise of the Cluniac monastic order. It replaced the original Hotel de Cluny which was built in the 14th century.

The courtyard is decorated in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The sundial and heraldic mottos seen here are part of the decoration on the octagonal tower.

The motto on the left reads "Servire Deo Regnare Est" (Latin meaning "to serve God is to reign"). The motto in the centre of the sundial reads "Nil Sine Nobis" (Latin meaning "nothing without us"). I have not been able to read the motto at the top.

The scallop shells surrounding the mottos symbolise the pilgrimage to the shrine of St James in Compostela, Spain (the Camino de Santiago), the route to which began near the Hotel de Cluny.

Now a hotel this (small) castle was originally constructed as a private house for a man of wealth. My daughter was going to hold her wedding here but the hotel could not handle the number of guests. Shame, as it is a beautful location on the outskirts of the Ancient Burgh of Tain and the building and grounds are lovely. She has however found another Castle Hotel for her wedding later this year - I have photos of it somewhere too.
