At a different level, the eponymous accomplishments of Englishman Sydney Herbert Allard are just as impressive and equally unlikely to be matched or bettered. Like many others of his time, Allard commenced his racing career with a Morgan three-wheeler - a car he later converted to four wheels. Various other circuit machines followed, before he turned his attention to the world of trials. What's generally regarded as the first true Allard was a car known simply by its registration plate - 'CLK 5'. Reputedly constructed in just eighteen days and nights, it comprised a modified Ford Model 48 chassis, powered by a 3.6-litre Ford flathead V8 engine and clothed with elements of a Type 51 Bugatti body. Success in trials and other competitions brought requests for similar cars from Allard's rivals, and by 1939 twelve examples had been built and delivered. The die was cast and, though delayed by World War Two, the Allard Motor Company opened its doors in 1946. Sydney's most famous special, and a forerunner to the company's J2 model, was the Steyr-Allard. This fearsome hillclimb car, powered by a war-surplus, air-cooled 3.7-litre V8 engine driving through twin rear wheels, carried its designer/driver to victory in the 1949 British Hillclimb Championship. The first production Allards quickly ensued. The K was a two-seater Sports model, the L a four-seater Tourer and the J, a two-seater competition version of the K. All three were based on Ford mechanicals (Sydney's day job was running a Ford dealership) and featured the novel Les Ballamy-designed split front axle that was to become an Allard trademark. Sydney wanted to crack the American market and a fact-finding trip convinced him that an updated version of the J model was his route to success. The J2 retained the J1's 100-inch wheelbase and split front axle but featured coil in place of leaf springs, both front and rear. The previous live back axle was replaced with a de Dion unit, complete with inboard 12-inch Alfin drum brakes and optional quick change centre section. The long radius rods were, however, retained. The stiff but light channel-section, stamped-steel chassis and minimal bodywork allowed an all-up weight of between 2000 and 2600 lbs, depending on the choice of engine. The resulting cars were renowned for their excellent power-to-weight ratio. Engine choice ranged from Ford or Mercury flathead V8s (with or without Ardun OHV conversion) to the more contemporary OHV offerings from Cadillac or Chrysler. The main visual difference between the J2 and J2X that replaced it in 1951, was the relocation of the spare wheel from a compartment in the rear to the side of the car, just ahead of the cockpit. The most important developments lay under the body, however. The front radius rods had been moved ahead of the axle, necessitating a six inch extension to the chassis (the X in J2X stands for 'extension'). This in turn allowed the engine to be mounted 7.5 inches further forward, increasing cockpit legroom and improving the car's handling. The engine choice remained the same, though by this stage the majority of buyers opted for Cadillac or Chrysler power - the old Ford units no longer being contenders in the power stakes. Views on the production figures vary wildly but, according to the Allard register, a total of 90 J2s and 83 J2Xs were manufactured between 1949 and 1953. Despite their relative rarity, they are without doubt the most recognised of all Allard models, enjoying considerable competition success on both sides of the Atlantic; not least in the hands of Sydney Allard himself who, among many other results, took third place in the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hours with a J2. The right-hand drive J2X being offered (chassis number J2X2138) was the very first one produced and was registered 'MGT 850' on September 6th 1951. As now, the car was finished in British Racing Green with black trim, black wire wheels and sported a pair of aero screens. It was powered by a Mercury flathead V8 equipped with the optional Ardun OHV conversion and featured a close-ratio three-speed gearbox. The first owner of 'MGT 850' was G.P. La Trobe Shea-Simonds, who the vendor believes was a test pilot for Supermarine. Sometime during 1953/4 it was acquired by hotelier Peter L Farquharson, who retained it for a similar period before selling it to Welsh solicitor John Williams in 1958/9. Hertfordshire-based printer Ronald Waterlow became the fourth keeper - taking possession in the early '60s. The Allard's fifth owner was John Patterson who had possession for only a year or so before it became the property of the vendor in 1981. A water wheel consists of a large wooden or metal wheel, with a number of blades or buckets arranged on the outside rim forming the driving surface. Water wheels were still in commercial use well into the 20th century, but they are no longer in common use. Prior uses of water wheels include milling flour in gristmills and grinding wood into pulp for paper making, but other uses include foundry work and machining, and pounding linen for use in the manufacture of paper. Some water wheels are fed by water from a mill pond, which is formed when a flowing stream is dammed. A channel for the water flowing to or from a water wheel is called a mill race (also spelled millrace) or simply a "race", and is customarily divided into sections. The race bringing water from the mill pond to the water wheel is a headrace; the one carrying water after it has left the wheel is commonly referred to as a tailrace.[1] The main difficulty of water wheels is their dependence on flowing water, which limits where they can be located. Modern hydroelectric dams can be viewed as the descendants of the water wheel as they too take advantage of the movement of water downhill. This is one part of the huge water wheel which drove the industry here for two hundred years or so. Strangely there is still grease in the groves of the teeth of this drive wheel. The trench where the wheel sat is visible although it would have been much deeper. The water from the Brook would have been directed to the wheel via a system of channels known as the Mill Race. There are some large walls remaining and stone containers. Largely it is returning to a natural state. (16) "The Irish Jaunting Car" - 1860s Carte de Visite Photograph This carte de visite is one from my personal collection. The photograph was taken sometime in the 1860s by James Magill of Donegall Place in Belfast. So far, I have not been able to find out much about James Magill other than the fact that he was also a bookseller. The subject of this original antique photograph is the famous "Irish Jaunting Car" of verse and song. The photo was taken in front of a brick livery stable. If you look at the window on the far right, you can see a man in a white shirt. What appears to be a horse collar is hanging up behind him. The detail of the photograph is exceptional, showing not only the construction of the jaunting car, but also the fashions of the day, as well as the construction of the brick livery stable. You can even see where a pane of glass over the door has been broken out. The horse seems to be a fairly good one and appears to be well cared for at first glance, as his coat is shiney. However, when the image is viewed on the largest size, what appear to be scars from old injuries cover his legs. The wonderful detail of his collar and harness is also visible on the largest size. It is evident that the man holding the horse moved slightly when the picture was taken, for his face is blurred; however, the features of everyone else in the protograph are clear and expressive. The dapper driver appears to be quite the character. By the way, the driver of a jaunting car was known as a "jarvey." (Mark that down in case you ever get on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?") Volume V05, Page 297 of the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica tell us: From Ireland comes the "jaunting-car," which is in general use, both in the towns, where it is the commonest public carriage for hire, and in the country districts, where it is employed to carry the mails and for the use of tourists. The gentry and more well-to-do farmers also use it as a private carriage in all parts of Ireland. The genuine Irish jaunting-car is a two-wheeled vehicle constructed to carry four persons besides the driver. In the centre, at right angles to the axle, is a "well" about 18 in. deep, used for carrying parcels or small luggage and covered with a lid which is usually furnished with a cushion. The "well" provides a low back to each of the two seats, which are in the form of wings placed over each wheel, with foot boards hanging outside the wheel on hinges, so that when not in use they can be turned up over the seats, thus reducing the width of the car (sometimes very necessary in the narrow country roads) and protecting the seats from the weather. The passengers on each side sit with their backs to each other, with the "well" between them. The driver sits on a movable box seat, or "dicky," a few inches high, placed across the head of the "well," with a footboard to which there is usually no splash-board attached. A more modern form of the jaunting car, known as a "long car," chiefly used for tourists, is a four-wheeled vehicle constructed on the same plan, which accommodates as many as eight or ten passengers on each side, and two in addition on a high box-seat beside the driver. In the city of Cork a carriage known as an "inside car" is in common use. It is a two-wheeled covered carriage in which the passengers sit face to face as in a wagonette. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a roundabout way, "The Irish Jaunting Car" made an appearance in the American Civil War in the form of a famous song. Harry Macarthy, an Ulster born entertainer who billed himself as "The Arkansas Comedian," wrote a set of rousing verses patriotic in theme for the Confederacy and set them to the tune of an earlier song called "The Irish Jaunting Car" by Valentine Vousden, an Irish vaudeville performer. Vousden's song was published sometime in the 1850s. Macarthy entitled his version "The Bonnie Blue Flag" (in reference to the first unofficial flag of the Confederacy), and it was first published in 1861 by A. E. Blackmar and Brother of New Orleans. It's easy to find the words and music for "The Bonnie Blue Flag," but finding them for Vousden's earlier song is not. I came across many, many poems and songs about Irish Jaunting Cars, but only two stanzas from I believe to be Vousden's original verses after several hours of searching on the internet. In history class we learned about the Indians that lived on the land for hundreds of years before Lewis and Clark arrived and after that, we shut our books and looked up to the current times. For me, my home and land were young, a near-white canvas that imagination and hard work would paint. From growing up in a house with wheels to living in a state with a mere 100 years of history, the thought of Europe, with all its recorded history, was an intriguing entity that called my name loud and clear for as long as I can remember. My huge obsession with Europe fueled my decision to live in Italy for a year. Living there I had one unrealistic experience after another. Vintage wine-filled afternoon with Counts in Palaces, rides through Mugello on a shiny red motorcycles, picking olives in the early Tuscan fog, horse rides through the woods and the one I am writing about today: a trip to a empty villa, complete with a Byzantine Silk factory. This day my friend and her boyfriend, knowing my passion for photo safari's took me out in the countryside near Pisa to visit a family estate. I hopped in the car as I did most of my mornings in Florence, a little confused as to where we were going or what we were doing (blame it on the Italian as a second language) but confident I would have the absolute best day of my life. And so it started, me staring wide-eyed, like a child out the window taking in the intricate beauty of Italy. We arrived late morning and parked in a gravel lot, walked across the street and unlocked a large gate. As we pushed the gate open it groaned a supernatural welcome into the interior silent paradise so layered with voices from centuries gone by, my ears were ringing in seconds and my imagination began to paint hypothetical situations in rapid iterations. When I enter dream-like real life scenarios I often hold my breath, but I also hold my breath when I am shooting. Needless to say I spent the next two hours intermittently gasping for air, sending blood shooting into my forehead, rocking me back and forth as I readjusted my eyes and stance. As my hosts coolly gave me the grand tour and answered my silly questions, I shot furiously, vowing to capture the unreal scene forever on film. The villa was situated next to a silk factory. The factory, now empty, with nature creeping from every angle, was Byzantine style architecture, which seemed to cut Italy's tender sky, so used to gentle arches and domes. Huge rooms, echoing in their emptiness, once held worms that produced fabric for the wealthy. Next to the factory were the servants quarters, long since over taken by trees and vines which filled the space once filled with countless generations of life. Behind the villa overgrown gardens twisted around ponds and sculptures leading to a cavernous "lemon storage" structure. Entering the domed building, the ceiling covered in terra-cotta tile, I snapped my way to the back where a dark passage pulled me in as far as I dared to move through the darkness. Next a proportional, but small, personal church stood ornately in the woods. Leaving me wondering about the loneliness inherit in these self-sustained enclosed communities of medieval Italy. Finally we were ready to enter the villa. While it was mostly empty in each room a small treasure and glimpse into the past sat serenely in the dim light, covered in a fine dust. Some rooms there were grand curtains, dingy and fading, still proudly doing their job of blocking out the world from pouring through the windows. Other rooms storm shutters were strewn across the floor, unable to withstand the storm of passing time. The main rooms seemed filled with life to me, layered with centuries of parties, dinners, int vintage wheel horse parts 3-2-1, blast off! Air inside the hubs contracts and a vacuum is created. Water and dirt are sucked into the hubs through the inner seals and corrosion sets in immediately. Bearing failure can be expected within two seasons in fresh water - one season in salt water. When properly installed and maintained, bearing buddy prevents wheel bearing failure and eliminates bearing repacking. Boat trailer wheels can be completely submerged. (13) Sherwood Ranger G-TLAC going for a ride The Sherwood Ranger was designed by Russ Light during the late 1980s and early 1990s and was the second aircraft design from his pen. Unfortunately Russ did not see the fruits of his labor as he passed away soon after his demonstrator first flew. Following Russ’ passing, the business changed hands but met with little success. Two years ago (2007) The Light Aircraft Company Ltd. (TLAC), based at Little Snoring Airfield in North Norfolk, United Kingdom, took ownership and completely overhauled the drawings, converting them into a usable computer aided design format while revising the part numbering system. But most importantly, the installation of a computer aided manufacturing system and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining center to produce many of the components has reduced the kit production times by approximately 250 hours. Design The design criteria for the Sherwood Ranger called for an aircraft that did not cost an arm and a leg to own and operate; it had to be easy build, and it had to have the timeless classic lines of a British aircraft. It needed to fly with consummate ease while incorporating a folding wing with trailering capability. But the most important design feature that couldn’t be compromised was to ensure that the pilot have a permanent smile while beating up a few clouds or shooting down that imaginary intruder. Construction The Sherwood Ranger was designed to be built in a smaller location, such as a single car garage, although a little more elbowroom is undoubtedly beneficial. It can be assembled using readily available portable power and hand tools, although a small drill press and bench-top band saw could make life a lot easier. Construction generally begins with building the wings, closely followed by the fuselage, undercarriage, and tail feathers. The kit includes composite items such as the turtledeck, wingtips, fuel tank, cowlings, etc., and whilst to the purist those parts should be made from aluminum or similar, TLAC offers the builder a route to a great-looking aircraft without the need to contract out specialist fabrication companies. The wing structure is based around tubular main and drag spars with GL1 (aircraft grade) plywood ribs with capstrips. A new full-wrap leading edge has been employed, speeding up the build process while adding to the appearance, and to the strength of the wing. The airframe structure is made up of aircraft grade aluminum. Round and rectangular tubing and channels are CNC machined for accurate fit. Gusset plates join most of the tubing intersections with AN hardware and aluminum extrusions where loads are concentrated—the framework is self-jigging with the use of Clecos since 99 percent of the holes are already aligned and drilled. The Sherwood Ranger is available in two formats: the 26-foot wingspan version in Europe, classed as a microlight, and the 23-foot clipped-wing version that is a Category A (under 90 knots) or Experimental version. Both models have four half-span Frise ailerons. Although not approved at this time for aerobatics in the United Kingdom, the Sherwood Ranger has an ultimate structural strength of +9g/-4g. Finish Our demonstrator (G-TLAC) is covered with the Oratex UL600 system. This covering system saved 12 to 14 kilograms (26 to 31 pounds) from the empty weight. Fitted with the Rotax 582 and ready to fly, G-TLAC weighed in at 213 kilograms (468 pounds) with a max takeoff of 450 kilograms (990 pounds), making the Sherwood Ranger capable of lifting more than its empty weight! The Oratex UL600 is a patented covering system containing unique water-based adhesive. The heat-shrinkable covering itself comes with UV protection and color already incorporated, saving massively on not only weight but also the cost of paints and sprayers, the environmental impact of solvents, and the time it takes to cover the aircraft. In fact, the G-TLAC took two weeks to completely cover on a part-time basis. Four-cylinder four-cycle air-cooled Jabiru 2200 cc engine. Engine Engine options at this time include but are not limited to the Rotax 582, Rotax 912, Jabiru 2200, and some Hirth two-strokes. There are many other potentially viable engine options yet to be explored, and TLAC is always keen to assist builders with their choice. Kit production is up and running with a lead time of three to four weeks, and at this time we are seeking dealers in North America. Performance (interpreted from the company brochure) The control surface dimensions were designed bearing in mind the requirements for aerobatic operation. The airframe is strong enough to meet aerobatic category requirements at reduced operating weights, that is, single-seat operation; however, certification of a microlight aircraft for aerobatic operation is not legal in the United Kingdom. Don't really remember. hahaha. Was just trying to study for my Econ test today all day. :P. After school went to Pepe's w/ James, Nithiwat, & Chris; shared nacho fries & root bear w/ James while Edward came out of no where w/ his bike. Went to Lil Bryan's after & just chilled. Everyone was eating & talking about this video we've seen online where "Epic Beard Guy" dominates some black guy in a fight on the bus, while I was just riding around Lil Bryan's backyard & on the street trying to learn how to skid w/ Chris' fixed gear. It was harder then I thought it'd be, but I got some small skids a couple of times. ;). haha. I need stronger leg muscles so I can lock the wheels harder & keep them locked so I can skid more legitly. haha. After we went inside to watch the "Amber Lamps" music video which was just a remix of the "Epic Beard Guy" fight; fucking hilarious. lol. Got picked up by Big Jeff & went to Popeye's b/c he was hungry. First time ever my camera battery died so I couldn't take anymore pictures after this one. :. We went to Jeff's house after & worked on new NR lanyard designs. Got some sick shit done then went off to NR orientation practice @ Donavan's. Was there for an hour, but seemed like forever. D: Went to Golden Deli w/ Big Jeff after & met up w/ Wisely & Tony. Had some delicious Pho & egg rolls. :]. On the way back home Wisely & Big Jeff were playing cat & mouse and being epically reckless. Straight up ran stop signs & got into the opposite lane multiple times to cut people off. hahaha. Too funny. Got home & realized how late it was & how much homework I haven't started. D: fml. A Day on the Tomoka River Most of the shots I take of rivers are of the Halifax, which divides Daytona Beach into the mainland and beachside areas. This is the Tomoka River, and it is situated north of Daytona, in Ormond Beach, Florida. The park that bears its name, Tomoka State Park, is an area known for camping and canoeing, and for its wildlife and giant, metal sculpture which depicts Indian lore. It had been a long time since I visited this park, and I picked the wrong time to do it! Without massive amounts of DEET, you don't want to go near the woods near a river in the warm season, especially after major rains! We found it to be mosquito heaven! Aside from the bugs, there were some spectacular views.
