If Walls Could Talk

I found it disconcerting to go from the generator bike at Occupy Wall Street -- making electricity for basic uses -- to the Green Festival in San Francisco, where this vendor was selling bikes that consume electricity, using the above phrasing. "It's okay to cheat" was another marketing ploy.

Electric-assist bikes are great if they replace car use, but that's not where this marketing is aimed at all.

Reflections of a Spinning Class

I signed up at a local gym in August for the first time. You see, I've never been a workout-kind of a girl. I played sports in HS (enjoyed a little, but had to as a requirement). As a music major, I practiced piano. A lot. I didn't make time for sports. Then after college and while in grad school, I had kids. I used to say, "I have young children" as my excuse. But time came for me to take being "fit" seriously.
I tried almost every class that's offered at my gym. So surprised that I found a love for spinning class. I'm not sure what it is about this type of exercise - the pace, music, instructors? - but I just love it.
I woke up earlier than expected today so I got dressed to exercise.
This morning's class was taught by instructor "R". I have to say that I was not particularly thrilled to see him. I was in his class once. He plays music way too loud. Very trebly...(yeah that's a word when we talk EQ). And he sings while he cycles AND makes other people sing. I can't sing while I'm exercising...
But today I learned something from him.
While playing music at a comfortable volume or balancing EQ are not his strengths, he is very helpful. He walks around to make sure people know how to use the bikes, refill water bottles when they run out, or get paper towels for people who didn't bring their own. He leads the class not only by his instruction (his field), but by serving. Things to apply in my classroom!
And then, at the end of class the man who was cycling next to me smiled at me and said, "Thanks for your inspiration! You cycled hard an got me to not stop!" (Now, mind you, I'm not a great cyclist. He was being kind.) He was being kind and lifted my spirits with kind words.

Many thanks for mr. JAF, for providing awesome ideas to how I modded Armada Sideways into Groove. I tried to put my own spin on the concept of adding the new arms and using the back as the chest.

I added a joint at the waist, allowing the top half of him to rotate around, so that the wheel ends up in the back of the leg, and the feet look more like they face forward. The chest plate is held on by a magnet. The arms are gundam, and the head comes from G1 or G2 Duststorm.

The exhaust pipes/forearm cannons come from a ZOID. The front end of the BMW CHP style bike is die cast, got it off ebay. I pulled the saddle bags and back wheel from it also.

I used Axer after all for the rear wheel holder, it also has a hinge on it, so it sits perpendicular to the leg while in robot...and the arm of Defensor.

And yeah, that's a kickstand - pulled it off a dollar tree toy, drilled a hole in it and put a rubber washer between it and the bike to provide good tight friction.

Finally, the enamels were layed down and official CHP decals were applied. Trying to be accurate with placement.

So, yeah, the mods were pretty extensive on this little guy, but I am happy the way he turned out, looks (to me) much like a CHP bike, and nothing like Armada Sideways...

This air is one of the most wicked looking tricks to witness in person -on Vert. This photo was taken by me, on my first basic 35mm camera that I got for graduation. It had no zoom and an auto-focus but nothing else. By this time I'd started studying media in college and had been a journalist/photographer in high school. Somehow I lucked out and developed an eye for great shots. More than anything I enjoy capturing amazing moments in time.

This was before the era of tricks so mindblowing that you'd previously only did them in video games. Watching Dennis McCoy and Mat Hoffman show us all what REAL Vert riding was all about, is still one of the most impressive things I've ever witnessed.

Dennis McCoy is also one of the most talented FLATLAND riders that I've ever seen.

Most people know DMC as a Vert rider. But I knew about Dennis when he was an all-around rider. That's Flatland and Vert competition. This pic was taken at the old Hoffman Bikes warehouse/ramps.. this was before ESPN came into the picture. It was just a bunch of riders pushing the limits and expanding the sport. September 1993.

PS:

On the next set of airs, Dennis dis-located his shoulder and collided full speed with the person standing next to me, off the ramp!! Missed me by about a foot, that was intense.

When this pair first came to my attention, I had a normal-angle lens on my camera.

But she was screaming so loudly that they came to my attention with enough time for me to swap out to my telephoto lens so I could successfully snap a few pictures of them going by.

Apparently riding on the handlebars of this guy's bicycle was a bit on the scary side.

The great race. Dave used to do all four sections - ski - run - bike - canoe - run...

The Victoria Day long weekend used to be a really big deal in Whistler. It marked the end of skiing for the year. Once upon a time the ski season used to go out with a great big bang. There was the Mogul Bash, the party at UBC club cabin, the semi X rated party down at the Christiana, the neighborhood party in White Gold, and of course the Great Race.
The Great Snow, Earth, Water race grew from modest beginnings into a monster. It eventually got so big that nobody was willing to try and stage it. It became a victim of its own success.
It began in 1975 with a fairly simple concept. Hold a race that begins at the top of Whistler and ends in the valley. Thrown in some other sports. Have some fun. The rules evolved as the years passed.
. The first year the race was run down the Creekside. Competitors started at the top on skis, then had to get to the valley any way they chose. Some chose to ski as far as they could and then run, walk, and sometimes crawl down to the valley floor.
Others chose to ride the gondola down, a plan which involved much less effort but which fell apart when a liftie at the bottom forgot to wait for the return carriage and de-railed a car. Competitors stranded on the stopped cable could only watch in frustration as all those who chose to run got to the bottom first.
Nancy Greene had a 4x4 waiting for her at mid-station. There were a few trial bikes. There was one hang-glider but mountain management nixed that plan.
When the skiers/runners/riders got to the bottom they handed offf to a team member on a bike. The bike rider passed off to a canoe team. The canoe team eventually passed off to a runner.
The first year proved the race was a hit and was probably one of the few races that was as fun to watch as it was to compete in. As it grew in popularity it inevitably grew in complexity and the rule book got longer.
The start became a Le Mans start. Those in the skiing leg had to place their ski equipment up around tower 18, back away from it some 100 yards, then, when the starting gun went, run like hell for their gear. Running full tilt in ski boots isn't the easiest thing in the world to do and the older bindings weren't always easy to fasten. The start was often side-splittingly funny.
It was decreed that skiers had to get off the hill under their own power. No more trucks, bikes, or lifts. Not only that, they had to arrive at the bottom with all their ski gear. Canny competitors screwed drawer handles to the shovels of their skis to make them easier to drag. Hours were spent debating whether it would be faster to carry hiking boots and change into them at the snowline, or just go like hell for the bottom in ski boots.
The skiing leg was fairly easy when the snowline was relatively low; it was hell when a warm spring chased the snow up past midstation. Those years the skiers would often arrive at the bottom covered with mud, bleeding from scrapes on knees and hands, absolutely exhausted.
After the town center was poured race organizers decided to run the course down the north side of the mountain. The north side has a much gentler grade than the Creekside which was both good and bad for competitors. The gentler slope angle meant falling ass-over-teakettle was less likely, but it also meant the run was longer. Much, much longer.
By the time the move was made to the north side the course was pretty well set. The skiers skied off the hill and passed off to a bike rider. The bike rider would ride around the West Side road and pass the baton (actually a bottle opener) to the canoe team at Wayside Park. The canoers would paddle up Alta Lake, through the River of Golden Dreams, then up Green Lake. The canoe team would meet a runner who would then run back to the village.
The bike stage was fairly hard to watch so most people the skiers come off the mountain and then headed straight for the River of Golden Dreams. The best action always happened on the river.
The canoe teams were widely distinguished by abilities. Some of the ringer teams had, especially in later years, world class paddlers. Most of the teams had members who could tell the front of a canoe from the back. A few teams didn't even have that.
The River of Golden Dreams is not the Mississippi. Stuff over a hundred canoes into it and the results are predictable. And usually hilarious.
The ringer teams knew their skier had to get down near the front. They knew their biker had to finish in the top ten. That's because if their canoe team, even if it was comprised of Olympic gold medalists, hit the river after even a dozen teams had gotten into it, their efforts were probably all for naught.

19th August 2011 - Bikes and wheeeels.

I really begrudge the process of swapping wheels. Especially when you need to do the brake blocks too due to a mix of carbon and alloy wheels. Put the Planet X Model Bs back onto the SL Pro Carbon so I can use it for the SCC Saturday bash tomorrow morning, and the Planet X Carbon 50s back onto the Exocet in preparation for Thursday's club TT.

Duncan M asked me at the weekend what do I do about maintenance what with owning 6 bikes, to which I answered that it isn't that bad. I think I jinxed myself, all of a sudden I feel like I'm swamped with bike maintenance.

There was the swapping of these wheels for a start.

I discovered that my Zesty has a puncture, so that needs to be repaired, and before it goes to have its front fork serviced next week.

The Exocet needs its rear brake looking at as it was sticking after having swapped the wheels.

The Dolan almost certainly needs new gear cables, and the right hand lever needs tightening because it keeps moving.

The rear mech and right hand shifter need replacing on the Scandal. It could also do with a shorter stem.

One of the levers is also a bit loose on the Pompino, and the mudguard is slightly skewiff.

The tension needs adjusting on the SL Pro Carbon's new pedals.

And the tyres need pumping up on the SL Pro Carbon, Scandal, Pompino, and Zesty.

Quite a to do list!

Once those wheels were sorted I did plyos at the gym, which I managed to power through. Grrr.

Nine speed cassette

The old cassette was yet another thing that was acting flakey on the bike; despite the old chain not being at all stretched (somewhere between 1/32nd and 1/16th inch per foot) new chains were hopping as if their mortal soul depended on it.

So I needed to replace the cassette (after ~5000 miles, I think; I'd rotated my cassettes around between the trek and the mlcm early this spring when the previous cassette started hopping) and I decided that this would be a good time to see how it would work trying to friction-shift a 1x9 drivetrain.

Thus a Shimano HG-80; I chose a 11-32 cassette instead of a 11-34, because the -32 starts at 11-12-14-16 while the -34 starts at 11-13-15-17, which shifts 1 tooth off all of my common cruising gears.

This is my Dahon Curve D3 with a new KLICKfix mount that allows you to affix bags and baskets compatible with it.

I got this KLICKfix frame adaptor from Thorusa.com. It is the longer one with better clearance. I wanted to use my Ultimate 5 Classic handlebar bag on more than one bike (the Ortlieb bracket only works properly on my mountain bike's handlebar, and not on the Dahon's) so this was a godsend.

The Dahon bikes are really neat. They are very light and can be folded to be easily carried inside the trunk of a car. Most folding bikes such as this one are manufactured in Europe where people use them for commuting - they ride from home to the subway station or the bus, and then take their bike inside the subway or bus. Neat concept!

My dirty Surly on Sugar Loaf Mtn. after a busy day.

As you may or may not know I’m in Boulder Colorado for a school rotation. I’m working at a Pharmaca (www.Pharmaca.com). While out here Lauren and I are living at my uncle’s house on top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. This is a picture of my Surly parked next to my uncles 1990s TREK “Y” frame. My road bike and all of my aunt and uncle’s bikes are out in the garage. My aunt is really excited about riding now. She’s anxiously awaiting her new DEAN custom TI road bike (www.deanbikes.com). My cross check is extremely dirty. In the past week, we’ve had beautiful sunny days, crazy winds, 8 inches of snow, rain, and hail. That mixture makes for some muddy trails up here.
Today was especially eventful. This morning we woke up to a black bear in the yard, and this afternoon as Lauren and I pulled into the driveway we were met by a dirt biker who needed to use a phone. Her friend had crashed and broken his leg a couple of miles up the trail. We called 911 and within minutes there were rescue trucks up on the mountain. Greg and I went out for a mountain bike ride and on our way back to the house we talked to one of the rescuers. The rescuer said that the fallen dirt biker had a compound fracture of the femur with obvious deformity. Needless to say, he was helicoptered out and taken into Denver. I hope he’s OK.
