The top 43 videos were played a total of 403,974 times across MTV International’s network (which excludes the US) from July to December last year, according to the broadcaster’s twice annual Platinum And Gold Video Play Awards.
Twelve of the Platinum Award winners (8,000 plus plays) received more than 11,000 spins, with Perry’s hit beating Leona Lewis’s 2008 record of 16,095 plays by nearly 5,000.
In total I Kissed A Girl was played 21,863 times, representing a 95% increase year on year for Perry and crowning her the most played artist for 2008. She receives a Double Platinum Award for topping 16,000 plays.
Madonna’s Give It 2 Me and Pink’s So What, also achieved Double Platinum status, with 16,745 and 16,317 plays respectively.
Perry achieved another Platinum Award with 13,577 plays for Hot N Cold, while Coldplay won two for Viva La Vida and Violet Hill.
