Media and Democracy: Scene One, Take Two?

Zrinjka Peruško Čulek is Research Fellow at the IRMO. She holds a M.A. degree in sociology and communication from the University of Zagreb. She is currently working on her Ph.D. thesis at the Department of Sociology, University of Zagreb. Her interests include theory of international communication, cultural and media policies, and the media and the culture of democracy. She has published on the topics of the international flow of information and media policies.

Somehow it seems that concern for the rights of (wo)man, now at the end of the millennium, is again as strong as it was in the 17th century, when the idea started to take root in the European culture. This view is especially strong from the Central European perspective, but major conferences and academic publications in the field reflect this as an important concern on the global level as well.

It is difficult to say decidedly why this concern is being expressed right now, but we would not be far wrong if we linked it to the process of change that has swept through the world body politic. This fundamental change has not been purely political, nor has it been confined only to the Central and Eastern European countries. The democratic model of government seems to have become the preferred option for countries on all the world's continents. Even if many have problems with its implementation, the majority now claim it as their choice.

Spring eco - seminar

Green Action, in cooperation with the Heinrich Boll Foundation, has organized a Spring eco - seminar every Monday from 21/05 to 25/06 at 19:00, to be held in its headquarters. We invite activists, citizens, students and pupils to participate the seminar, and to actively get involved in environmental protection and Green Action’s projects.

The Spring Eco Seminar will continue the Autumn Eco Seminar, which consisted of 10 lectures of outside professionals about major environmental topics. The Spring Eco Seminar will consist of 6 lectures and a presentation GA's programs and projects. The goal is to present activities that GA conducts throughout Croatia so that interested citizens can actively be involved in programs and projects. Leaders of programs and projects from Green Action will lecture and present related topics.

Planet Earth Day 2007

"Green Action has celebrated Planet Earth Day by organizing a diversity of happenings since 1995. Every year we choose an urgent topic, and this year Planet Earth Day has been organized with the initiative right for the city. ‘Urban development of the city of Zagreb’ is this year's topic and is closely related with the campaign we are managing against the devastation of Cvjetni Square and downtown. Furthermore, it is related to the fact that the City council has announced a change from the town’s general spatial planning. These changes would allow similar devastating projects of all downtown blocks, the building of new public underground garages in the center, more intensive car traffic in the City's center and further slowing down of public transport.

Resnik citizens: if you say the incinerator is that good, how about than you build it in Pantovčak?!

Report from waste incinerator project presentation
Around 80 citizens of the Zagreb suburb of Resnik came to a public presentation organized by Green Action where they were able to get more information regarding the planned construction of a waste incinerator in Zagreb.
Bitter because they were entirely expelled from this project, gathered citizens proposed concrete actions and demonstrations against the incinerator, especially because Resnik is a place where vegetables for the city markets are grown. Citizens were shouting: "We feed the City - and an incinerator will be contaminating it!"

Zelena akcija - News

Pravo na grad i Zelena akcija pozivaju vas na prvu tribinu Foruma Zagreb "Što se događa s našim trgovima?", koja će se održati u ponedjeljak 16. ožujka u 18 sati u Novinarskom domu, Perkovčeva 2. Tribina je posvećena spornim rekonstrukcijama niza zagrebačkih trgova i njihovim zabrinjavajućim urbanističkim i društvenim posljedicama.

O Forumu Zagreb:
U proteklih nekoliko godina ključne teme razvoja grada ostale su bez primjerene javne rasprave, a sve je očitija i praksa isključivanja javnosti iz procesa donošenja odluka. Ovakvo zanemarivanje javnog mnijenja i neovisnih stručnih mišljenja dovelo je do posve stihijskog razvoja grada. Pravo na grad i Zelena akcija potakli su uspostavljanje Foruma Zagreb kako bi nizom tribina, okruglih stolova i predavanja osnažili alternativne glasove neodrživoj razvojnoj politici grada.
