Crawford Market (officially Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Market) is one of South Mumbai's most famous markets. It is named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. The market is situated opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters, just north of Victoria Terminus railway station and west of the J.J.flyover at a busy intersection. The market houses a fruit, vegetable and poultry market. One end of the market is a pet store. Most of the sellers inside the market nowadays sell imported items such as foods, cosmetics, household and gift items. It was the main market for fruits in Mumbai until March 1996, when the traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay).

The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. After India's independence, the market was renamed after Maharashtrian social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. In 1882, the building was the first in India to be lit up by electricity. [1]

The edifice is a blend of Norman and Gothic architectural styles. The friezes on the outside entrance depicting Indian farmers, and the stone fountains inside, were designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of novelist Rudyard Kipling. The market covers an area of 22,471 sq m (24,000 sq ft) which 5,515 sq m (6,000 sq ft) is occupied by the building itself. The structure was built using coarse buff coloured Kurla stone, with redstone from Bassein. It has a 50 ft (15 m) high skylight awning designed to allow the sunlight light up the marketplace.

Outside Dancing

Ok so now to the long chronicle of the dance night, you have been warned, its going to be really long.

So Saturday noon, I ready my bagpack, already have 3 outfits in it, wig, makeup stuff, and the silver shoes. I thought for a second to carry a second pair, but I knew if I did it, I would end up wearing the more comfortable ones, so to force myself to use the silver ones, I only took those with me.
So travel to Merida, get to hotel, get a room. Then see my backpack, send a few phone messages, and there I was.
Mm, it was around 6, too early to dress. So I had to decide what to do in the meantime. So I went outside. Do some little tourism, in boy mode.
THen passed by one store, mmm, perhaps I can get a few make-up supplies , so there I went, and bought a few ones, among them the new eye-shadows.

So, it was dark when out, so I went to hotel, showers and the whole routine.
Then to dress up, then the one hour long routine, at that point the girl that was going with me, called she has arrived.
She went to get some thing she need, and I finished doing my makeup, and the last touch to get the girly image.
Mmm, too early still, but too late to go out and back. So I took advantage of the internet at hotel room to wait.
At some point my friend called, one friend of her was there to give her a wig. WEnt there, say hi, back to my room, to wait my friend to get ready.
Later friend called, I had to help her do make-up, not easy with the long nails.

Finally ready to go out. Did the driving, being night, in a different city, in girl mode, I was nervous. So good I have so many times of practice before :D
Arrived to the disco place. Park and walk. Pay entrance fee, mmm , no photos inside, so sad. AS I already said, it was so great that entrance boy said "welcome Ladies"
It was crowded inside, the beaty contest already started, so had to see it standing.

There were 8 girls in the contest, Wow they look incredible, Some had such thin figures. Aww, me needs to diet. And they all so young.
Then a pause, a Cher impersonator, she left me speechless. Incredible looks.
Then girls came out to do another parade, then 3 finalist.
Then another show, 4 boys dancing in almost no clothes.
And then the girls came out, from the far away point I was sure the girl in white dress was to win, but it was the girl in pink dress, representing Izamal.
Later I saw both them closer, while dancing, the girl who won had such a pretty face, almost perfect and so feminine, wow. She did indeed deserve the winning.

Like maybe one third of the people in the disco dissapeared once the contest was over.
Quickly grab a chair, and sit to rest feet for just a little.
Then I stand up to dance, had to ask friend to go to middle area to dance with rest of people.
That as a start good idea, but as I kept dancing I got hotter, so had to move out and sit. Didn't want to loss makeup.
So sit down just under air conditioner, and that was great place to stay, dance under the cooler air, sit if got tired, easy to left bag there.
I danced and danced and danced, till they turned the lights on to say "we are closing, everybody out"

A few funny things happen inside.
At some point this guy kept looking at me. Before I got nervous, friend asked to move to some other point. Lcukily not see him anymore.
At that new place, I did change purse of side, So while putting arm inside blouse, I knocked two empty bottles in nearby table. This boy helped me pick them up, and shake my hand, like saying hello. Funny thing, a couple of times later during the night, he passed near where we were, and each time he extended his hand to say hello again. I dis respond grabbing his hand, but I found it funny.
Also later, a girl, looked at me and smiled to me. I didn't knew what to do. Plus she was inside a big group. Ah, I just simply got too scared.

So outside disco place. Back to car. Drive to hotel.
ASk friend to take a few pics, just to remember. And each one to their room
Go back to boy mode to sleep. And as I already said, next day do some tourism as boy.

Ok, that was it, another long, long chronicle, definitively doesn't show the emotion I had of doing it.

This weekend I had to stay here on the island, not going out anywhere.
Not sure If dressing, like it would feel so different to do it and kept myself locked inside the appartment, after several weekend letting Jessica go outside, feeling the air, having fun.
But then other weekend, will go to travel to another country, so no taking any girly things.
So probably, after this weekend, Jessica will take a little time to reappear.
But them maybe perhaps its better if I left her rest a little.
No halloween party this year.

Let me take your pict- ... BRAAAAAAIIIINNS.

I think this month allows me to express my love for gore and all things spooky, with no judgment (or at least not as much). I cannot wait until the nights when the weather gets to that Autumn chilly point and I’m carving pumpkins or making sweet treats. But I'm more excited about Halloween this year than ever before! both my parents will be home Halloween night. Its silly, really. But Halloween is like Christmas to me. I love the holiday and spending time with loved ones just seems necessary. I’ve been anticipating the moment when my mom adds finishing touches to the Halloween decorations around and on the house as my dad goofs off, making bad sound effects as if he’s a horror film soundboard. Or even when he’s going around singing Monster Mash. It all appears cheesy, but I love it!

Anyway, the picture above should have a little more explanation. I’ve been doing small sfx makeup throughout the week and I'm having much fun with it! My friend is having a Zombie birthday themed party this month and of course, to get in you need to be a zombie - which I love. I’ve been thinking about what kind of zombie I should be but I realized I need to practice my sfx skills before anything else! So I got together my art supplies, a roll of TP, some Elmer’s glue and makeup. After I finished, I was contemplating on if I should or should not walk around my neighborhood until someone suggests I go to a hospital or walk around scaring a couple neighbors into thinking the zombie apocalypse is here [and real!].

Yeah I think it was Jim Croce who sang – If I could save time in a bottle, The first thing that I’d like to do, Is to save every day Till Eternity passes away, Just to spend them with you – and so on he goes pulling us into the memories that are our lives. We remember events differently than, let’s say, the camera normally does because it in no way possesses the dynamic range of the human eye and then add to that the intensifier of our mind and fotos come off pretty thin.

Well in case you’ve ever wondered what it is I’m up to in my images it is just that. I am pushing photographs – hard – to get them closer to mimicking memory. For example, I don’t remember the lush garden at a villa in Costa Rica as green – - – I remember it as GREEN!!! I think you get it now ~:0)

I have some acquaintances that are very interested in what it is I do to create my photographs and that is why I often include the camera setting and whether or not I used Work-Flow software such as Photomatix Pro 0r that I used Photoshop to stitch together and tweak my images and so on. So here goes – Shot all the bits used in me pix with my current squeeze-box the Canon G11. Great Camera – shoots RAW (data-rich image recording method) and at a price most can afford. It shoots somewhere around 10 mega-pixels which captures more than enough visual information to make very detailed pix. I like its wide-angle lens and shoot wide-angle as often as it fits the needs of the image. This particular image manipulation was shot at 6mm which is very wide-angle in case you didn’t know. I seem to recall – when I was looking at the camera settings data in the RAW file that this pix was shot at 1/300th sec., f/3.5, iso 80 and – what else is there?

So there you have it – make of the bit-0-tech-info what you will and know that created images are often filled with symbolism as is this one so ponder its meaning and make the most of the time you have to cut down on the regrets on the other end – and get out and make pictures! ~:0) VivaChas!

Sweatpants Sunday [235/365] - Today was such a lazy day. I woke up, showered, and put my sweat pants back on. Later on in the afternoon, Carley came over with what she called her "bags of fun"... board games, cards, and movies. We played a few rounds of Skip-Bo (I won 2 out of 3! Go me!), had a couple of Sunday drinks, and watched Ghost. Such a good movie, a classic!

We’re about 10 days away from the exhibition, the excitement is definitely building up. The first one is always the momentous moment. It always makes you reflect on your journey. I’ve been on Flickr since early 2005 (I don’t know the exact date). I’ve always been drawn by photography but due to the expensive nature of film photography, it was always explored only during our travels.

My first upload on Flickr was a shot taken by my dad. It’s a very symbolic image as dad and I were always behind the camera but the thing about that shot was he never saw the end result. The photo was only developed after his demise.

Anyway my photography journey on Flickr began with a phone camera and scanned shots of our film photos. The quality of the hp image is questionable (since back then the technology had just begun growing) but there was potential and it definitely fuelled the passion.

January 2006 I purchased my first digital camera – the canon powershot a620 and never looked back. I learnt everything I know about photography with that little monster. I shot everything under the sun, read every single online site and magazine on photography terms and techniques and shot only with a manual setting. I would go through tonnes of images, learn and study what made an image.

I didn’t take any shortcuts. People assume they can take better photos by just copying others or buying a better camera or being a plain parasite learning from others without taking the time to brush up on their knowledge or acknowledging them. My advice to anyone who’s reading this if you really want to learn something brush up your basics, take the time to read the theory itself.

Only then did I start enhancing my photos with image tools like photoshop and picnik. Believe me I have done all the things you shouldn’t do like over contrasting images. But it definitely helped with the learning process. I joined groups on Flickr that criticize your flaws and tell you what you need to do. It’s a very painful process but it helped.

Then there were the friends I made.

I was looking through my contact list and realized Jimreeves was my first contact. I once told him if I needed to be happy I’d visit his stream, as there’s always such joy and love in his photos.

One of my earliest contact, guide and friend on Flickr would be Ezee. I think we’ve known each other for nearly 3 years now?

Ezee used to take the time to point out my errors and my one phase of over processing.

Piscesdreamer has been another delightful friend who, I’ve known since way back in 2006 (I had to check).

Then there’s Devilmangod probably one of my first Malaysian flickr friends. I still remember the first shot of his that got me hooked – a portrait of a violinist.

December 2006 I joined the local flickr group and met some wonderful friends. 3 of us instantly clicked, Kenmin, Kervin and Syiqin.

That’s also where I met Johan. Johan has been a very important essence of my photography journey. You could call him my mentor, I learnt a lot from him.

He is always willing to teach and guide anyone. I learnt most of everything I know about off camera flash from him. Till today he is the one I would go to in regards to learning about a camera or purchasing one. I hadn’t wanted to get a kit lens when I was shopping for a dslr.

Johan gave me the best advice ever, listen to me you only need 2 at this point – the kit and the 50mm. and he was absolutely right.

So I never visit camera shops or doubt Johan, instead I bug him ;p When my camera got songkranified in Thailand he’s the one I ran to while limping (I had a nasty fall at that point);p

There’s another thing I love about Johan he takes the best portraits of me! If I ever decide to get married he’s shooting my wedding ;p

Flickr was also where I met Kaz, the friend I’m exhibiting with. Kaz frightened me at the beginning, it’s a pretty usual reaction because she is one strong personality of a woman.

We clicked on a 2 day trip to Malacca when she famously saved me from being deserted on a highway. Of course right before her car scared the daylights out of me. Since then we’ve been through loads and now people think we’re sisters! I’m told the resemblance is amazing! ;p

Though truthfully our mothers are the ones who look like 2 peas out of a pod though they don’t think so!

Kervin and I clicked instantly. Our photography journey has been pretty similar. We both swear by our tiny little p&s cameras and our photography is strikingly similar. We would have shot the same spot at different timings and yet we would be astonished with how similar it looked. We even purchased our dslr’s at the same time. He’s the kind of friend you always want by your side.

Ralph Holloway, Professor of anthropology @ Columbia University - In mid-1960’s, he suggested that the evolutionary changes in cogitative capacity are the result of brain reorganization rather than changes in size alone. The disagreement about how the human brain differs from those of other animals, and indeed how the brains of other animals differ from each other - whether in quantity or in quality - continues ~ page 11

To be sure, the human brain is a bizarre devise, set in place through natural selection for one purpose - to make decisions that enhance reproductive success. That simple fact has many consequences and is at the heart of evolutionary biology. Once grasped, it helps the brain scientists understand a major phenomenon of human brain function - its ubiquitous lateral cerebral specialization. There are many interesting studies of humans that show how hand gestures and language are connected. One study of twelve congenitally blind speakers found that they gestured as they spoke at the same rate as a group of sighted people, using the same range of gesture forms. The blind people would gesture while they spoke even when speaking to another blind person, which suggests that gestures are tightly coupled to the act of speaking. Congenitally deaf people in isolated communities will develop their own fully communicative hand gesture language with syntax. ~ page 62

Richard Wrangham concludes that if emotion is the ultimate arbitrator of an action, the emotion that underlies aggression for both chimps and man is pride. He states that male chimps in their prime organize their whole lives around their rank. All decisions are guided by it, including when they get up in the morning, with whom they travel, whom they groom, and with whom they share food. All actions have the goal of becoming the alpha male. The difficulty of reaching this position causes aggression. With human it is much the same. Wrangham quotes Samuel Johnson, who observed in the eighteenth century, “No two people can be half an hour together, but one shall acquire an evident superiority over the other.” Just as today, men flaunt their status with expensive watches, cars, houses, women, and class-conscious societies ~ page 73

Bipedalism led to free hands and changed breathing patterns. Our arching and opposable thumbs have made it possible for us to develop the finest motor coordination of any species. Our unique larynx has allowed us to make the infinite number of sounds that we used for speech. Our mirror neuron system is far more extensive than has been found in other species, and we will see that it has far more ramifications than just languages. The Fantome

Sailed on this ship back in 1985 for a vacation with my Dad and brother....

It's loss was very sad...

Thirty-one men had run for their lives from Hurricane Mitch for a day and a half. They sailed north, sailed south, then tacked east and west, back and forth in futility, behind a little island of cover. But it left them in a virtual vise, walled in between 50-foot waves and 100-mph winds where sea and sky merged into a vast howling whiteout.

To the south and west lay the shoals of Honduras and Belize. To the north and east, more of Mitch. Their young captain tried vainly to thread a needle to safety. But as he clung to the helm two Wednesdays ago, drenched and exhausted, the deck beneath him listing a sickening 40 degrees -- his sense of right, left, up or down was likely lost in the maelstrom of foam and spray.

Experienced mariners can tell you what comes next. You want to lie down and go to sleep. When the ship starts falling apart, you are just waiting -- and wanting -- to die.

The Fantome was the $15 million, self-insured pride of Miami Beach-based Windjammer Barefoot Cruises Ltd., a sailing line. Its president, Michael D. Burke, said he started 51 years ago when he got drunk in Miami and woke up the next morning in bleary possession of a $600, 19-foot sloop he dubbed the Hangover. Over the years, his fleet grew to six.

The Fantome itself had a far more regal beginning. It was built for the Duke of Westminster 71 years ago, and Aristotle Onassis later bought it as a wedding for Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. But the princess, foolish girl, left the mogul off her guest list and never got the boat.

Burke bought it in 1969, gave the 282-foot, steel-hull ship a $6 million, four-masted makeover, and registered it out of exotic Equatorial Guinea, a small sliver of impoverishment in West Africa.

The seagoing pros and cons of steel-hull vessels are the subject of Sebastian Junger's 1997 best-seller, The Perfect Storm, the tale of a fleet of New England swordfish boats caught near Newfoundland by Hurricane Grace in 1991: ''Steel is tough compared to wood, don't let anyone tell you different. Steel goes down faster, though. It goes down . . . well, like a load of steel.''

Still, the Fantome was considered a solid vessel, and when its massive sails were filled making way to windward, it was romance in motion, needing neither roulette wheels nor ice swans to seduce its passengers. Breakfast was a Bloody Mary; dinner attire was T-shirt and shorts; passengers dived off the side to snorkel, and climbed back up on rope ladders -- all the simple tropical pleasures that $1,500 to $2,000 a week could buy.

The 32-year-old captain, Guyan March, who had windsurfed in the British Isles from the time he was a young boy, liked to say he wasn't chopped squid either. He had piloted Windjammers since his early 20s, was respected by his crew, and was highly regarded by women for his good looks and sea tales. His brother, Paul, also sails for Windjammer.

Cosmopolitan Virtual Makeover 2002 Deluxe makes it easy to create a whole new you in minutes. (Just try not to take it too seriously or expect any life-changing transformations.) Installation is quick and easy and the program's interface is clean and simple to navigate, once you click around a bit. This not a new program, but a bundle of previously released versions of Cosmopolitan Virtual Makeover and Cosmopolitan Fashion Makeover Deluxe.
The first thing you need to do after installing Cosmopolitan Virtual Makeover is import a headshot of yourself, either from your digital camera or a scanner. The program comes with some standard photos of models you can use, but that's hardly as fun. Getting the photo right is the most difficult part of using this program. You'll need to make sure you're well lit, you're in front of a plain background, your hair is completely pulled back, all your accessories are removed, and the photo is straight on from the front. Any weirdness will potentially make you look freakish.
The best part of this program by far is playing with hairstyles--there are hundreds of styles in just as many colors. While some of the styles are decidedly awful, many are acceptable and even cute. There are some styles that might be suitable for men, but only if the guy wants to look like a member of the Strokes. The makeup section is clunkier to use and slightly less useful--we found it hard to make any of the makeup choices look natural.
The second disc, Cosmopolitan Fashion Makeover Deluxe, lets you input your measurements, import your made-over face from Virtual Makeover, and try on clothes. However, we weren't even able to import our face, because the two programs were incompatible. The clothes are also relatively , so we didn't see the point in trying on the "daring new looks" the program touts. It should also be pointed out that most of this program seems to be paid for by sponsors, so your choices for, say, jewelry, are limited to the one company that wanted to pay for placement. Incidentally, the box is loaded with so many coupons, flyers, and ads that you might wonder why you're even paying for the product at all.
Though we had a few doubts, we really enjoyed using Cosmopolitan Virtual Makeover 2002 Deluxe, and decided that we should never, ever get bangs. Click on "See more pictures" to see how we fared with the software. --Ara Jane Olufson
