1960's - Eastern Gas - Staff Spotlight
Staff Spotlight - Pat Wood
MANY GIRLS find that the choice of careers open to them is very limited, but that didn't bother pretty Pat Wood. She knew the sort of work she was cut out for, and went right ahead with her studies ..... in engineering.
Pat is shortly due to start work as a draughtswoman with the distribution department at Southgate, but at present she's biding her time at the John Dyde Training College, Bishop's Storford, working in the general office and as a relief telephonist.
Her interest in engineering started while she was still at school, and she went on to the East Herts College where she completed an O.N.D course. Then she started an engineering degree course at Enfield College, but marriage plans soon got the better of her, and she gave up the course after two months.
That's when she took on the job with Eastern Gas at Bishop's Stortford, her home town.
In July Pat is to be married to Roy Wonfor, a toolmaker from Enfield. The wedding ceremony will be at Stortford.
Nineteen year-old Pat still lists engineering among her interests. She also likes ice skating and - to put it in her words - " any sort of social get-together."
2010 Student Marshal Drew Wenzel ’08, Thayer ’10
Hometown: Fremont, California
Degree: Bachelor of engineering and master of engineering management, Thayer School of Engineering
Graduating with two engineering degrees after six years in Hanover, Wenzel truly bleeds green. Thayer School is a “wonderfully unique place,” he says, that “creates a real feeling of community and camaraderie amongst the students.” The countless late night sessions of “grinding through problem sets or projects with classmates were brutal at the time, but on those evenings I probably learned the most while making some of my best friends.” Lessons from outside the classroom? “Dartmouth has taught me how to effectively manage my life. While academics always had priority, I realized I wouldn't be happy unless I effectively balanced it against other activities like sports, volunteering, and a social life.” Next up for Wenzel is a job at Google, improving the environmental performance of the company’s buildings. He also plans to pursue a master’s in sustainable design and construction from Stanford.
