Galloping Goose Trail Bitumen

Galloping Goose Trail Bitumen

Today we walked 8.5km on the Galloping Goose Trail (GGT) from Sooke Potholes upper parking lot (48.5km) to the 52.7km point and return to the car. The 49, 50 and 51 kilometre signposts have been replaced but the 52km marker is still missing. This section of the trail has been closed to the public for over 18 months due to waterline repair work by the Capital Regional District Waterworks Department (CRD). Contrary to all the CRD press releases over the past two years, the new waterpipe layed underneath the GGT is NOT PVC pipe but, rather, old-fashioned castiron. This means it is jointed-pipe and -- just like the old pipeline laid in 1912 it's supposed to replace -- it leaked at the joints. This required the whole jointed castiron pipe being dug up (again) and repaired. It must be nice to have unlimited funds and not be accountable to any level of government nor the taxpayer for the cost of such debacles. Anyway, I digress.

The CRD has opened the first section of the GGT from the potholes to the end of TLC Campground, replacing the Trail Closed sign with a Caution sign advising users of possible delays, dust, and to "Please watch out for construction vehicles". This section of the trail and the trail section we walked beyond the 51km marker has all the appearances of being completely finished and ready for use by the public. There are no areas of onging construction nor are there any construction vehicles of machinery present. The new trail surface material appear to be a bitumen of some type (dark in colour and not as compact as the former material).

We hit the trail at 11:27a.m. in light rain. Bern and I had unbrellas and I had my handheld GPS atop my 4-kilo daypack. Inside the pack, was our soon-to-be-world-famous, egg-salad sandwiches, powerbars and desserts. This we dined upon returning to Barnes Station shack at 1:33p.m.. Our farthest north -- according to my Magellan 210 handheld GPS unit -- was N4828.142', W12343.789', 167 m. This is estimated to be the 52.7km point on the GGT.

Bernice and I both agree this is the finest bit of trail on Vancouver Island. This section of the GGT is elevated immediately beside the Sooke River and cannot be accessed from any roads. This means one has to hoof it or cycle it to enjoy the experience. It will sure be nice when the trail is reopened so we can walk up to the clearing at 55.5km and past the last trail-marker at the 56km.

GPS Coordinates: N4827.788', W12344.225

Valve manifold after repair. Weird angles are now not so bad. After assembling and gluing everything, there was still a leak at a coupling on the incoming side (left of photo). The U-tube was an inelegant but effective way to fix the leak in tight quarters, avoiding either a lot of digging or cutting of pipes.
