A Quarter Passed
My father became an avid coin collector many, many years ago. I recall the blue hard bound books with gold lettering indicating what each contained. When opened it was full of coins carefully labeled and precisely positioned. When I wanted to buy some candy from the local Ben Franklin five and dime, I would sneak in to his sock drawer and snag a silver dollar. Looking back, I shudder at what I had done.
Several weeks ago I came across a penny minted in 1930, the year my father was born. I wrote my father a note and carefully taped the coin to the letter. In the note I told him what I had done so many years ago. In return, I received a hand written note, it was from Donna, his wife of 25 years. Donna had written the note because my father has become quite frail and his hand writing has suffered greatly. There was no mention in the note of what I had confessed, only the excitement he felt when he received my small token. He didn't mention my short comings, because he had always known that the kids were pilfering his collection.
In my closet I have a large candy jar that I throw my pocket change in to at the end of the day. This past weekend I happened to have it out and then found myself looking at each coin. After many hours of looking through more than 1000 coins I had set aside a small amount that were quite old.
I plan on mailing those coins to my father, one coin at a time...
Silver Pendant
The Christmas elves weren't quite as industrious as usual this year (they were busy with other things), but they did manage to produce this little sterling silver pendant. It's about the size of a quarter, slightly domed, embossed design.
