Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological, a Phoenix museum, hosts an annual Indian Market. The Indian Market was held at South Mountain Park. There were hundreds of artists attending this year. It was really facinating being able to see all of the beautiul art work and to be able to talk to venders.

In additions to vendors selling artwork, there were seveal Code Talkers who were autographing T-shirts and caps.

Native Americans who served in the United States Marine Corps whose primary job was the transmission of secret tactical messages. Code talkers transmitted these messages over military telephone or radio communications nets using formal or informally developed codes built upon their native languages. Their service was very valuable since codes and ciphers can be broken, but languages must be studied for a long time before being understood.

The name code talkers is strongly associated with bilingual Navajo speakers specially recruited during World War II by the Marines to serve in their standard communications units in the Pacific Theater. Other Native American code talkers were used by the United States Army in both World War I and World War II, using Cherokee, Choctaw, and Comanche soldiers.

One of the busiest summer weekends every year in Santa Fe in my home state of New Mexico is what is called Indian Market, a massive fair filling the Plaza and many side streets with entertainment, food booths, silver and turquoise jewelry and many other Indian and Native American crafts. This painted steel cow sculpture is one of the more dramatic craft offerings—and photographing it in early morning was a great way to showcase the intense blue New Mexico sky. I almost always make Indian Market, not because I'm an inveterate buyer of Indian crafts, but because I'm almost always in Santa Fe that time of the summer for my annual dose of the Santa Fe Opera, and I need something to do during the day!
