mens french fashion - The Story

The Story Of Men's Underware

The Story Of Men's Underware

There was a time when men's fashion, and in particular that of underwear, was reserved exclusively for the elite. Today it has been democratized, proving that our society has in fact evolved. The aesthetics of the body, valued so much by the Greeks, seem to have rediscovered a prominent place for men. Mirroring the evolution of morals, the history of underwear also highlights the constant flurry of borrowing that has taken place between women's and men's fashion. At different times underwear was hidden under clothes, allowed to peek out, or got longer - and got shorter, establishing a game between the taboo of the past and the fashion of the present, as well as repudiating the notion that one's identity could be betrayed by a simple piece of clothing.

18th Century Reproduction Men's Coat Justacorps

18th Century Reproduction Men's Coat Justacorps

Available at our soulmanvintage shop.

Fabulous reproduction of an early 18th century men's warm red wool coat or justacorps (body fitting) as it was known in French circles. This every day wear style was de rigueur until 1720 when everyone was emulating French fashion.

The cut is similar to a pattern draft in The Cut of Men's Clothes by Norah Waugh and made from a thick napped warm red (Venetian), possibly loden, cloth and fully lined in a black weighty soft napped backed rayon. All the buttons are covered in a smooth velvety soft material and the coat is detailed using black braided trim. Every second button is non-working and the balance, with the exception of the bottom three, are working buttons. The wide bell cuffs (with hidden and lined elasticized inner cuffs) each have working buttons as do the scalloped flapped pockets that open to generous fully lined pockets. Voluminous soft pleated skirts detail the sides at back. The skirts were done in two sections and interlined with a batting to add oomph. The sections were then married in the centre with two matching buttons as well as being topped with a matching button. Mostly machine sewn and a very well made piece with great attention to detail.
