Cute pattern. Unfortunately there is an error in the instructions for the earflaps. On a personal preference I would do the decreases on the right side. Then when you get to Row 15 the instructions should be K2, K2tog 3 times, K2. Which would necessitate a 16th an 17th row in order to get to the 3 stitches needed for the I-cord. I worked it as follows:
Row 16: K3, P1, K3
Row 17: K2tog, sl1 K2tog psso, K2tog
then continue on with the instructions as written for the I-cord.
