It took me awhile to comprehend it, but I understand now why Michigan Ave (of all thoroughfares in Detroit) has a High Occupancy Vehicle [H.O.V.] lane.

Past a certain street (LIvernois more than likely) traffic is heavier-esp. during rush hour and a lot of truckers frequent this side of town! But in actuality, the HOV lane starts past downtown on U.S. 12 (Michigan Ave).

Now in (some of) the southern states, H.O.V. lanes are very common and strictly enforced. And during rush hour, that's when it's at its heaviest flow of traffic-which explains why it's illegal to be in that lane during certain hours while only one person-the driver-is occupying the vehicle.

It would have made more sense to have H.O.V. lanes on more heavier strips such as 8 Mile, Woodward, Grand River, Jefferson, Gratiot, I'll even go so far to say Van Dyke.

But in this town, you can expect almost anything!

The different types of Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

In ancient times, only wild Reishi was available. Reishi was classified by color into 6 types: Red, Green, White, Black, Yellow, Purple.
In 1972, researchers at Kyoto University in Japan successfully cultivated Reishi in the laboratory. From a single species, Ganoderma Lucidum (Red Reishi), all six colors could be grown by varying the temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide content, and the available nutrients.

The six types of Reishi are thus shown to be one species.
Wild Reishi is extremely rare. Only one or two mushrooms can be found on a hill. Due to damage by insects and weather, the quality of wild Reishi is unpredictable. Only the fruit body can be harvested, when the active ingredients have already decreased. The dried mushrooms may not have the potency of the fresh mushroom. When buying wild Reishi, expertise is required in order not to confuse Reishi with the hundreds of other mushrooms (some of which are poisonous). After it matures, the fruit body is hardened by fibers which makes it more difficult to extract and digest the active ingredients. The spores are of microscopic dimensions, similar to the size of bacteria. They are protected by two layers of hardened cell walls. These cell walls trap the active ingredients inside and are indigestible.

Although wild Reishi fruit body and the spores are all effective products, our ancestors had to use a large quantity of Reishi to get a little benefit. As it was impossible to cultivate, this rare mushroom was available only to emperors.
Modern bio-engineering technology has made Reishi available to the general public in large quantities.

The quality can be carefully controlled by providing the best conditions and sufficient nutrients. Further investigations have discovered that the largest amount of active ingredients exist in the mycelium, and that the mycelium is more digestible. The extraction process can be timed at the precise stage when the mycelium contains the largest amount of active ingredients. Fresh mycelium is available, and there is no chance for mistaken identity. Without the obstacles of the fibers, the extraction is more complete and the extract is more digestible. Therefore, the latest research on the medicinal properties of Reishi are done on the mycelial extracts.

Reishi is now available in capsule or tablet form, which makes it possible to avoid the bitter taste and standardize the dosage. However, not all Reishi capsules are the same. Some capsules are made from the fruit body, which contain a large quantity of dietary fibers. Some capsules contain other herbs, which may lead to side-effects. Some capsules made from the mycelium contain also the grain from which the mycelium is grown (so only a small fraction of the capsule is actually Reishi mycelium). The differences can be readily identified by tasting the powder. Pure Reishi has an intense, pure bitter taste. The best Reishi capsule is the extract of pure Reishi mycelium without the grain.
Several manufacturers have printed misleading brochures to promote the use of their own products. Such conflicting information can be confusing. The intelligent consumer will be careful in checking the source of information. Third-party documentation, especially those written by scientists, are the only reliable source.
An excellent definitive work on Reishi is "Reishi Mushroom, herb of spiritual potency and medical wonder", written by Dr. Terry Willard, Ph.D., member of the Canadian Government's Expert Advisory Committee on Herbs and Botanical Preparations. Also very informative is the Chinese books "Lingzhi and Health Vol. I-III" edited by Dr. Shiuh-Sheng Lee, Professor of Biochemistry at National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine, Taipei, Taiwan.

Reishi polysaccharides have high molecular weights of up to 1,050,000, which makes absorptiion by the intestines difficult. Dr. Fukumi Morishige, M.D. found that patients given large doses of Reishi (2-9g/day) had diarrhea, but when a large dose of vitamin C was also given at the same time, there was no diarrhea. Vitamin C breaks down the high molecular weight polysaccharides to a molecular weight of around 30,000, so that they are much more easily absorbed by the intestines.
For general health maintenance and prevention, take 2 Reishi mycelium capsules twice per day on an empty stomach. Also take 500 mg of Vitamin C per day after breakfast.
When a discomfort occurs from minor illness, increase the dosage to 2-3 capsules 3 times per day. Also take 1,000 mg of Vitamin C per day after meals.
For insomnia, take 4-5 capsules before bedtime. Take 2 in the morning. Also take 1,000 mg of Vitamin C per day after meals.
When a serious illness occurs, increase the dosage to 4 capsules 4 times per day. Also take 2,000-3,000 mg of Vitamin C per day after meals.
Some people may experience Vertigo Reaction when they first take Reishi. During the first week, they may experience slight swelling of the head or dizziness.

I believe this sign used to be up on Central Expressway. I can't imagine two law firms with the same type of sign. It is a cool / different type of sign, which I am sure forms a wide range of opinions. I know I sure have some. LIKE.. If you are going to put up a sign that is going to draw attention, don't put it at the back of your facility. Even though the place has open gates, there are signs all over the place saying stuff like "Do Not Enter" "No Trespassing" "You are being monitored" "Violators will be prosecuted" "Beware of Dog" "Dog lives here" "Leave dog alone". Come to think of it, I should have taken pics of all the signs... FROM a public area of course. I wouldn't want the shark coming after me. I didn't enter the location. After reading all the warnings, I backed out of the place, but of course my "Type A" personality still wanted to get the picture. I circled back around and went into an apartment complex that sits across an open field from it. From there I was able to zoom in and get a shot.

Anyway.. I really wish I could have gone to the back parking lot to get a picture. It would have been really cool to get a picture looking up at it. I might have to give them a call.

CROWN POINT | Johnny Depp, aka John Dillinger in the Universal film "Public Enemies," is hitting Crown Point this spring reportedly to reprise the gangster's bold 1934 escape from Lake County Jail.

The scene will be shot on location at the Old Sheriff's House and Jail, 226 S. Main St., sources said. Universal declined to comment on specifics.

The front part of the Second Empire-style building housed the top cop in Dillinger's era. The back holds the cells from which the bank robber fled in broad daylight.

Dates for the Crown Point shoot are under wraps. But director Michael Mann has targeted the old Lake County Criminal Court, 220 S. Main St., as his headquarters during a three-day stay. Reborn the Hall of Justice Bar and Ballroom in the early 1990s, the jail's neighbor will host up to 200 actors, crew members and technicians.

"Hollywood's coming to Crown Point," said Philip Struebig, co-owner of the Hall of Justice. "It's going to be a heck of a thing for Crown Point. It will put us back on the map."

He is banking on hosting a reception for three-time Oscar nominee Depp, 44, during the shoot. "We're ready to rock 'n' roll," he said.

Work crews arrived Monday to prep the red-brick jail for its close-up. By Thursday, a dozen tradesmen were measuring timber on sawhorses for a new drop ceiling and walls. The chug of a portable generator and buzz of a circular saw all but drowned out jokes about tommy guns.

"I wish we could say (the restoration) will be complete, but it'll be mostly the entry and upstairs," Universal location scout George Constas said Thursday.

The Depression-era cells -- one which housed Dillinger -- are rating kid-glove treatment. The restoration team will make them "look pretty, but not too pretty" for the period drama. "It'll just look like a jail," said Constas, standing in the gutted foyer. "Concrete and bars."

Indiana native Dillinger escaped the heavily guarded jail March 3, 1934, by brandishing a gun. Some say it was real gun smuggled into him; some say it was hand-carved.

He then embarrassed local authorities by driving off in Sheriff Lillian Holley's new V-8 Ford. The nonprofit Sheriff's House Foundation oversees the registered landmark today.

Philip and Cynthia Jo Struebig, who purchased the courthouse in 1990, said they met with Mann before Christmas to discuss local Dillinger sites that might be incorporated into the film. The "Miami Vice" producer toured the old courthouse, admiring the "Victory of Law Through Justice" mural before which Dillinger was arraigned, then inspected the jail.

Mann also borrowed a book and vintage photos of Public Enemy No. 1 from the Struebigs' collection of gangster memorabilia that adorns the Speakeasy Restaurant and Great Escape lounge within the Hall of Justice Bar. When they bought the old courthouse, "it was deteriorated. It was raining in the ballroom. We restored it as a labor of love. Never did I expect something like this would happen," Philip Struebig said.

Based on the book by Bryan Burrough, the crime drama will bow in 2009. The cast includes Christian Bale as G-man Melvin Purvis, who ambushed Dillinger outside Chicago's Biograph Theatre a few months after he fled the "escape-proof" Lake County Jail. Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, who collected best actress honors for her role as Edith Piaf in "La Mome," has been tapped as Billie Frechette, the gangster's lover and companion. "Public Enemies" will be filmed from March through June in Chicago, Indiana and Wisconsin.

21 is kind of my lucky number. I was born on the 21st of February.. So i just kind of like it :)

It was supposed to be a "stay home and be lazy while watching Criminal minds/Law & Order" day... BUT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ON TV VERY MUCH TODAY. So... I went swimming, ate all of the contents of the fridge and cabinets, and went to ceramics with my grandma--where I'm painting a turtle candle for my cousin's apartment.
BUT I FOUND OUT SOME EXCITING NEWS! I get to take the "save the date" photos for my cousin Krissy in two weeks. We are going to run around downtown New Albany, go by this awesome old movie theater that is used for parties, and go by the ohio river (maybe).
I'm so excited because this is the first time I'm doing photos for someone and getting paid! I don't like to charge for family and close friends...because I think that's a little strange. :S But she wants to pay me... so yay! I get a little extra money for summer.

Tomorrow's my last day in Indiana. I'll be back soon though... hopefully :)

...and my new camera! My old small (allegedly) indestructible Olympus 770SW has died an unfortunate death, so I've been looking for a new field camera. Canon has recently entered the shockproof / freezeproof / waterproof / crushproof field of cameras, and the Canon Powershot D10 got good reviews, so I ordered one and it arrived today. Too late in the day to give it a good testing, but I can report that you can operate the buttons with gloves on! :)

A current estimate, of the amount of money I have to collect during this summer! I might be able to split it up a bit, but this is the setup I'd like to have at the end of august, where I have to shoot a friends birthday party.
I did the estimate in US$, but the prices are danish (we pay more sales tax, sadly for young and financially troubled students).
I got a job in a mini-market, a long with the job at my mom's lawyers office, so I think I should be able to get most of it together. Of course my birthday is also coming up (4th of july, no kidding!)

On the occasion of 4th Global World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 15th June 2009, Silver Inning Foundation, A Dedicated organization for senior citizens and their family members will be commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Week from 13th June to 19th June 2009 It has taken the initiative to host various events to create awareness and sensitize the Government and the Civil Society to eliminate elder abuse at both micro and macro level. We are also trying to network with organizations working with elderly in Mumbai and all over India.

Anyway, here's the story:

Last night I was at a party I had helped put on at a club.

I was taking photos as always, some with flash and some without, but mostly flash. Late into the night a guy who had been giving me odd looks and hovering around my friends all evening, suddenly lunged at me and started yelling. I don't know why, but I think he was just annoyed with me and my friends, and the photography was a good excuse to get into an argument with me. Who knows, he seemed a few pebbles short of a beach anyway:

Guy: What the hell do you think you're doing?

Me: I'm taking photographs of this event.

Guy: You can't do that, it's not allowed.

Me: Actually...

Guy: It's illegal in Finland to take photographs in any eating or drinking establishment.

Me: No, it isn't.

Guy (flaiing arms and shouting): I have lawyer friends who are big fish and they will screw you up, you're breaking the law, I KNOW the law, I am in the know! I want your film! Is that digital? I want your camera!

Me: I don't know how it was before, perhaps your 'knowledge' is dated, but in this country and every country I've ever been to, it's perfectly legal to take photographs in a public place. Restaurants and bars in Finland are allowed to make their own rules, but this establishment does not ban photography in the premises. And I'm not going to give you anything, please leave me alone.

[Guy tries to grab my camera as security arrives to see what the brouhaha is. I tell him we're merely talking, but the bouncer stays (fortunately)]

Bouncer: Calm down, sir, and leave her alone. She's right anyway.

Guy (getting hysterical): I want the police! You're photographing me in secret! Call the police immediately, you'll see, they'll take you away. I know the law, I WENT TO LAW SCHOOL! You're photographing people in secret!!

Me (getting pissed off): I was looking through the viewfinder and shooting with flash, how is that secret? How do you know I'm not a lawyer? I certainly seem to know more about this than you do. Yeah, let's call the cops. I'd love that.

Guy (to the bouncer): I want her camera confiscated! She's breaking the law!

Bouncer: She is not breaking the law, this is a public place and if you can't handle it then you can go home and not be in public. She has every right to take photos in this club and you need to leave her alone. Now.

Guy: I have the right to see her photos!

Me (calming down because of bouncer's great attitude): I have absolutely NO obligation to show you anything, and the law isn't an issue here. However, in compliance to good manners I could, if you asked politely, show you these photos and delete the one I took of you onstage (he had given a short performance earlier).

Guy: Deleting isn't enough, you've already broken the law, I want you arrested and your camera confiscated.

Bouncer: You need to leave the premises now, sir.

They Tried to Lynch Him
Halleck, Nevada - 1888

Old time gambler William Haseltine sat on a hill overlooking Halleck. He did it frequently. Enjoyed watching the valley and its activities. He could see south all the way to now closed Fort Halleck at the foot of the Ruby Mountains. Poplar trees marked the quadrangle, now leafless in November. Below him, looking like a little creek, the weary Humboldt River slowly eased by town.

As he put it, “It’s a fair spot to rest a man’s bones.”

It was slow around town. Uncle Billy, as everyone called him, looked down at the twenty or so buildings around the McCain hotel and the railroad depot. He saw Gus Richards, one of the Glaser Ranch hands, ride up, tie his horse to the hotel hitching rail, and disappear into the bar. Uncle Billy surmised that Gus might be looking for a game of poker. The gambler stood, dusted himself off, and walked down to the hotel.

As Haseltine pushed open the saloon door, Richards said, “How about a little game?”

In his pocket Gus had his summer pay. He planned to take the old geezer for enough gold to spend the winter in Elko in comfort. But it didn’t work out that way. Uncle Billy, with decades of gambling experience, soon had all of Gus’ money. The gambler casually flipped a coin to Richards commenting that a chap has to eat.

Through his anger, Gus had decided to beat the heck out of Uncle Billy who was 40 years his senior and smaller. Gus was ready to pounce when Ed Kelly, the McCain ranch foreman, walked in. Richards stood and stormed out, slamming the door.

Ed said, “Better look twice behind you for a while. That hombre’s a grudge holder.”

After dark, Billy headed for his room at the McCain’s house. As he stepped on the landing outside his quarters, everything went black. When he regained consciousness, the gambler was in a world of hurt. A huge bump on his head, bleeding profusely, hurt like the dickens. The doctor who attended him found a couple of broken ribs and lots of bruises. The old codger was lucky to be alive. It goes without saying that his pockets were now empty.

The Elko Independent editor railed at the brutal beating and robbing of the old man. He demanded that the “wretch may be arrested and brought to speedy justice.” He added that if the thug had been caught leaving town that the citizens of Halleck would have saved the county the expense of a trial.

Gus Richards had been hiding about three miles from Deeth (east from Halleck). He gave up. Deeth Constable McAdams put Richards on the train going to the county seat in Elko. When the train pulled into Halleck, Gus saw a new gallows on the depot platform, a rope dangling from the high beam. He turned white when five armed men entered the coach and demanded the prisoner.
McAdams defied them, saying, “If you take him, it’ll be over my dead body. I’ll plug the first man that lays a hand on him.”

Disappointed, the lynchers, guns now holstered, backed off the train to stand by the empty gallows. Gus, white faced and frightened, knowing he had barely escaped death, made it to Elko for his trial.

Sore loser Richards had his trial in January 1889. Indictments of robbery and assault with intent to kill were dismissed. There wasn’t enough evidence. Gus didn’t get off though. The jury convicted him of burglary for ransacking Billy’s room in the McCain house. The judge gave him ten years in the State Prison at Carson City.

Uncle Billy didn’t physically do well after the beating. In fact, he died before Gus even finished his prison term. In September 1893, the old gambler passed away. Ed Kelly and a couple of friends from Halleck dug a grave for the white-bearded gambler. They buried him on the little knoll where he sat and contemplated Halleck and the valley.

As the gambler said, “It’s a fair spot to rest a man’s bones.”
