Dive to ocean bottom was like trip to 'another planet and back,' Cameron says

In James Cameron's fantasy films, like "Avatar" and "The Abyss," the unexplored is splashed in color and fraught with alien danger. But on his dive to the deepest place on Earth, reality proved far different: white, barren and bland.

Yet otherworldly -- and amazing.

"I felt like I literally, in the space of one day, had gone to another planet and come back," Cameron said Monday after returning from the cold, dark place in the western Pacific Ocean, seven miles (11 1/4 kilometers) below the surface. "It was a very surreal day."

Cameron is the first person to explore the deepest valley in the ocean since two men made a 20-minute foray there more than half a century ago. He spent about three hours gliding through the icy darkness, illuminated only by special lights on the one-man sub he helped design. That was only about half as long as planned because his battery ran low.

This deepest section of the 1,500-mile(2,415-kilometer)-long Mariana Trench is so untouched that at first it appeared dull. But there's something oddly dark and compelling about the first snippets of video that Cameron shot. It's not what you see, but where it puts you. There is a sense of aloneness that Cameron conveys in the wordless video showing his sub gliding across what he calls "the very soft, almost gelatinous flat plain."

"My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity," Cameron said.

It may not have looked all that dramatic and, in a way, Cameron was "doing exploration with training wheels," said Andy Bowen, who heads the deep submergence lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

But it was an amazing start.

The images "do lack the visual impact of highly colorized 3D spectacular representations of the ocean," Bowen said. But there are still "dramatic discoveries to be made."

The minute-long snippet, released by trip sponsor National Geographic, is just a coming attraction. Cameron will keep diving in the area, some 200 miles (322 kilometers) southwest of the island of Guam, where the depth of the trench is called Challenger Deep. And he's already filming it in 3D for later viewing.

To Cameron, the main thing was to appreciate just being there. He didn't do that when he first dove to the wreck of the Titanic, and Apollo astronauts have said they never had time to savor where they were.

"There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, `This is where I am; I'm at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean?"' Cameron told reporters during a conference call.

"I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren, desolate lunar plain, appreciating," Cameron said.

He also realized how alone he was, with that much water above him.

"It's really the sense of isolation, more than anything, realizing how tiny you are down in this big, vast, black, unknown and unexplored place," the "Titanic" director said.

Cameron said he had hoped to see some sort of strange deep sea creature that would excite the storyteller in him, but he didn't.

He didn't see tracks of small primitive sea animals on the ocean floor, as he did when he dove more than five miles (eight kilometers) down several weeks ago. All he saw was voracious shrimp-like critters no bigger than an inch (2.5 centimeters). In future missions, Cameron plans to bring "bait" -- like chicken -- to set out.

Cameron said the mission was all about exploration, science and discovery. He is the only person to dive there solo, using a lime-green sub called Deepsea Challenger. He is the first person to reach that depth -- 35,576 feet (10,843.5 meters) -- since it was initially explored in 1960.

There had been a race to reach the bottom among rich and famous adventurers. Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, has been building his own one-man sub to explore the ocean depths. Cameron's dive was "a fantastic achievement," Branson told The Associated Press.

Branson said he hoped to be the first to explore a different deep-sea location, diving later this year to the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Puerto Rican trench, which is only five miles from his home. Just shy of six miles deep, the area has not been explored yet.

Branson also hopes to join Cameron in a tandem dive of solo subs. "Together, we'll make a formidable team," he said.

While Cameron's dive was far longer than that of U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard 52 years ago, he didn't reach the trench walls because he was running low on battery power. He said he would return, as would the sub's Australian co-designer, Ron Allum.

"I see this as the beginning," Cameron said. "It's not a one-time deal and then moving on. This is the beginning of opening up this new frontier."

"To me, the story is in the people in their quest and curiosity and their attempt to understand."

The trip to the deepest point took two hours and 36 minutes and started Sunday afternoon, U.S. East Coast time.

His return aboard his 12-ton sub was a "faster-than-expected 70-minute ascent," according to National Geographic, which sponsored the expedition. Cameron is a National Geographic explorer-in-residence.

The only thing that went wrong was a hydraulic failure that kept Cameron from collecting rocks and critters and bringing them back to land.

Science like this takes time, but Cameron is committed to doing it, said Woods Hole's Bowen, who ran a program that sent an unmanned sub to the same place in 2009.

"The reality of exploring such an environment is that at times it can be very boring; exploring these environments isn't always about some dramatic highly visual discovery," Bowen said. "The scientific process is exhausting and sometimes it takes a significant amount of sweat, if you will, to uncover secrets."

Cameron did sweat -- and shiver.

When the 6-foot-2 (1.87-meter) Cameron climbed into the cramped sub, his head hit one end and his feet the other. It was warm outside because it was near the equator; it was toasty inside, temperatures topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), because of the heat given off by the sub's electronics. It felt "like a sauna," he said.

But as he plunged into the deep, it grew cold inside the sub as the waters outside dropped to around 36 degrees (2 Celsius), he said.

The pressure on the sub was immense -- comparable to three SUVs resting on a toe. The super-strong sub shrank three inches under that pressure, Cameron said.

"It's a very weird environment," he said. "I can't say it's very comfortable. And you can't stretch out."

Radio's 'This American Life' retracts Apple story

CHICAGO - The public radio program "This American Life" on Friday retracted a story about the harrowing tale of what an artist said he found while investigating Apple operations in China, citing "numerous fabrications."

The show's weekend broadcast details inconsistencies in the highly popular Jan. 6 episode that was an excerpt from writer Mike Daisey's critically acclaimed one-man show "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," which currently is at the Public Theater in New York.

"We're retracting the story because we can't vouch for its truth," Ira Glass, host of "This American Life," said in a letter posted on the show's website.

The New York Times said later Friday that it also had removed a questionable paragraph from the online archive of an op-ed piece Daisey wrote for the newspaper in October. Daisey also twisted the truth about his time in China during an interview with The Associated Press late last year.

In his monologue, Daisey describes meeting very young workers who put in very long hours and were forced to do crippling, repetitive motions at factories that make Apple products in China. Some he claimed had been poisoned by a chemical called hexane.

But "This American Life" says Rob Schmitz, a China correspondent for the public radio show "Marketplace," located and interviewed Daisey's Chinese interpreter, who disputed much of the artist's claims. Daisey, under questioning from Glass, admitted in Friday's broadcast that he didn't meet any poisoned workers and guessed at the ages of some of the workers he met.

"This American Life" said in its statement that staffers asked Daisey for his interpreter's contact information while fact-checking the story and he said the cellphone number he had for her didn't work anymore and he had no way to reach her.

"At that point, we should've killed the story," Glass said. "But other things Daisey told us about Apple's operations in China checked out, and we saw no reason to doubt him."

Daisey posted on his web site Friday that he stands by his work and that what he does is theater, not journalism.

"'This American Life' is essentially a journalistic — not a theatrical — enterprise, and as such it operates under a different set of rules and expectations. But this is my only regret," Daisey's letter said.

Daisey spokesman Philip Rinaldi said Friday his client was "not speaking to anyone about this right now."

Apple has been rebutting Daisey's allegations for months, to little effect. The Times also wrote an investigative series in January on dangerous working and living conditions for people who make Apple products in China, including explosions inside factories making iPads where four people were killed and 77 were injured.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment Friday.

The original "This American Life" episode, "Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory," has become the most popular podcast in the history of "This American Life" with nearly 890,000 downloads.

Daisey also claimed in an interview with AP late last year that he met Chinese workers whose joints in their hands had disintegrated because they were doing the same motion hundreds of thousands of times.

"I know that people in charge know about these things and chose not to address them. And that's hard to swallow when you see the damage it does and you know how little it would take to ameliorate a high degree of human suffering," he said then.

The Times, which published Daisey's op-ed piece following Steve Jobs' death in early October, removed a paragraph from the online version that discussed conditions at Apple's factory in China. The newspaper posted an editor's note warning readers that the section had been removed because "questions have been raised about the truth."

"The rest of the piece is his opinion as a performer and a thinker," said Eileen Murphy, a Times' spokeswoman. "If this were a news story it would be a different situation. It's not. It's an op-ed."

In his original monologue, Daisey splices Jobs career milestones and the transformation of Apple from a David into a Goliath with more personal stories about his own connection to the computer maker.

He has said that when he saw four photos posted online taken by workers at a Chinese factory to test the iPhone but mistakenly not erased, he suddenly realized people, not robots, were putting the sleek devices together.

In interviews and on stage, Daisey has said he traveled to the Chinese industrial zone of Shenzhen and interviewed hundreds of workers from Foxconn Technology Group, the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, who suffered from their work.

"It's like carpal tunnel on a scale we can scarcely imagine," he said while performing the show in New York in October.

In this weekend's "This American Life," Daisey tells Glass he felt conflicted about presenting things that he knew weren't true. But he said he felt "trapped" and was afraid people would no longer care about the abuses at the factories if he didn't present things in a dramatic way.

"I'm not going to say that I didn't take a few shortcuts in my passion to be heard," he tells Glass.

Daisey has performed the monologue for some 50,000 people from Seattle to Washington, D.C., and it is now at The Public Theater until Sunday. Daisey was expected to take the show on tour, but its future is now in doubt.

In a statement, The Public Theater said the show would be performed in New York as scheduled and stood by what it called "a powerful work of art."

"Mike is an artist, not a journalist," the statement said. "Nevertheless, we wish he had been more precise with us and our audiences about what was and wasn't his personal experience in the piece."

Change sometimes can be frightening, but this change is one that will advance lives. In the able accepting a blockage anniversary meant acclimatized about a little passbook breadth all of your deposits and withdrawals were recorded, and if it came time to pay a bill you accept to put the little artificial affiliate down so as not to ruin the blow of your checks, abode the analysis out, assurance it, and duke it over. Today blockage accounts can plan this way if that is what the chump wants, but technology has delivered the debit card, the cyberbanking check, and the cyberbanking transfer. All of these things accomplish paying bills easier and added efficient, allowance up some abundant bald time in our lives.Debit cards are cards that accessory just like acclaim cards, but instead accept your blockage anniversary aggregate beyond the foreground and abjure the money beeline from your blockage account. A lot of debit cards admonition bouncer adjoin overdrafting because they will arise aback beneath anon if the money is not in the account. This stops the chump from authoritative a acquirement they cannot acquiesce and helps individuals apprentice their cyberbanking boundaries. Debit cards are usually acclimatized anywhere acclaim cards are, and artlessly crave a PIN aggregate for character verification. Application a debit agenda is faster than autograph out a analysis at a store, appropriately authoritative it a added acceptable acclimation of payment.Electronic checks and cyberbanking transfers are about the aforementioned thing, and both are activated in a brace of altered ways. First, if you use online cyberbanking to pay a bill, the website frequently requires that you access in your blockage acquisition and anniversary aggregate in accession to the coffer name and the abandonment amount. The merchant afresh processes the check, and during this action they abjure the money electronically from your blockage account. This is the allotment of the action alleged cyberbanking transfer. These types of affairs actualization up on a coffer anniversary with the merchant name followed by a 9 or added chiffre transaction number. In this situation, the cardboard analysis never leaves the checkbook, but the money is aloof just the same. This is acceptable because paying by cyberbanking funds alteration is immediate, but it is accessible to defalcation because these transfers do not plan as apprenticed as debit agenda transactions. Some brick and adhesive merchants use the cyberbanking analysis arrangement in a altered way. The chump writes out a cardboard analysis and the agent runs it through the cyberbanking banknote register. The annals scans the check, processes it electronically into an cyberbanking transfer, and debits anon like a debit card. This is acceptable and inconvenient. First, the chump has to decay the time autograph the analysis and the cardboard analysis is wasted, because the merchant frequently allotment it to the chump if it has austere the register. This action is acceptable because it has the complete approval or abnegation that a debit agenda transaction does; the chump and the merchant will apperceive anon if the money was aloof or not afore the chump leaves the counter. With all of the new procedures to action money from blockage accounts, it is a admiration anyone still bothers to abode a cardboard analysis anymore!About the author: Nicholas writes for breadth as able-bodied as account cyberbanking accompanying articles, you can analyze acclimatized accounts at

Hillsborough files show 'drunken fans' were blamed

Relatives of Liverpool supporters killed in the Hillsborough disaster reacted angrily last night after leaked Whitehall papers disclosed that Merseyside police wrongly blamed the tragedy on drunken fans at the time.

Confidential documents relating to the tragedy, in which 96 supporters were killed when the crowd surged forward before an FA Cup semi-final in 1989, were not due to be released until the autumn. But some of the papers obtained by the BBC yesterday revealed that the former Prime Minister, Baroness Thatcher, was told by a senior Merseyside officer that drunken fans caused the crush.

There was anger in Liverpool after the tragedy that South Yorkshire Police, who were policing the match in Sheffield, had blamed supporters. But the papers show that officers in Merseyside shared their colleagues' opinion – and relayed it to Downing Street.

Four days after the disaster, a member of the Downing Street policy unit met senior Merseyside officers. According to a note of the meeting, an unnamed officer blamed the supporters for the chaos, likening it to the Heysel stadium disaster in 1985 in which 39 Juventus fans died after being charged by Liverpool supporters. It said: "One officer, born and bred in Liverpool, said that he was deeply asham- ed to say that it was drunken Liverpool fans who had caused this disaster, just as they had... at Heysel."

According to the note, Sir Kenneth Oxford, who was Merseyside Chief Constable at the time, said: "A key factor in causing the disaster was the fact that large numbers of Liverpool fans had turned up without tickets. This was getting lost sight of in attempts to blame the police, the football authorities, etc."

Sir Kenneth, who died in 1998, was also said to have expressed concern about Liverpool's ground being turned into a "shrine". The note is initialled "MT", suggesting it was read by Lady Thatcher, and the phrase "drunken Liverpool fans" has been underlined.

Sheila Coleman, of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, said: "Those of us who were around Liverpool in the 1980s are well aware of Ken Oxford's racist and bigoted views, Presumably, he recruited senior officers with a similar mindset."

Maathai have been speaking out for interpersonal justice thinking about that founding GBM in 1977. thinking about that then, GBM has aided non-urban ladies plant almost 30 million trees throughout Kenya to slow desertification and provide fruit, fuel and shade, getting 'foresters devoid of diplomas'. in an extremely amount of scenarios the trees experienced been the main hint of autonomy while in the women's lives. The only way you can in actuality increase forest include is by involving the people.' ladies of her era (she's 64) didn't have it easy, and divorced ladies (which she is) even much less so. however her gender have been a powerful element of her appeal and possibly her success. much more compared to years, Maathai's courage made her a countrywide hero. China’s Stock-Index Futures Rise as U.S. Data Bolster Outlook

China’s stock-index futures rose after U.S. retail sales jumped and the Federal Reserve raised its assessment of the world’s biggest economy, boosting the outlook for exporters.

China Shipping Development Co. may pace gains by trade- related companies, while Jiangxi Copper Co. may advance among metals producers as metal and oil prices increased. Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical Co. may lead declines by drugmakers after the government vowed to extend drug-price cuts.

“Stocks will continue to rally as long as growth won’t slow too much,” Greg Lesko, who manages $700 million at Deltec Asset Management in New York including investments in Chinese stocks, said in a phone interview yesterday.

Futures on the CSI 300 Index (SHSZ300) expiring in March, the most active contract, gained 0.5 percent to 2,691 as of 9:20 a.m. local time. The Shanghai Composite Index (SHCOMP) climbed 20.94 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,455.80 yesterday. The CSI 300 Index rose 1 percent to 2,681.07. The Bloomberg China-US 55 Index (CH55BN), the measure of the most-traded U.S.-listed Chinese companies, added 2.1 percent in New York.

About 14.6 billion shares changed hands in the Shanghai Composite yesterday, or 21 percent higher than the daily average this year. Thirty-day volatility on the gauge was at 14.77, the lowest level since May.
U.S. Data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU) rose to the highest level since 2007 yesterday after retail sales increased 1.1 percent in February, the most in five months. The Federal Reserve raised its assessment of the economy as the labor market gathers strength. After the close of trading, the Fed said 15 of the 19 largest U.S. banks could maintain adequate capital levels even in a recession scenario in which they continue paying dividends and buy back stock.

The U.S. is China’s second-largest export market, making up about 17 percent of the Asian nation’s overseas shipments, according to Shenyin & Wanguo Securities Co.

The Shanghai Composite has climbed 11 percent in 2012 following two years of losses on speculation the central bank will add to a Feb. 18 cut in reserve requirements to halt a slowdown in economic growth. Stocks in the index trade at 10.1 times estimated profit, compared with a record low of 8.9 times on Jan. 6, weekly data compiled by Bloomberg showed.

Health-care Plan

China’s pledge to extend drug-price cuts is part of an overhaul of its health-care system to trim the cost of caring for an aging population. Political leaders vowed to make medical care more affordable and widen coverage of state-paid health insurance. The plan will be supported by a tendering system tested in Anhui province that encourages drugmakers to compete on price and quality for state contracts.

Premier Wen Jiabao will hold his annual press briefing after the close of the National People’s Congress at about 10:50 a.m. in Beijing today.

New loans at China’s four biggest banks were less than 20 billion yuan in the first 11 days of this month, the 21st Century Business Herald reported today.

The price-to-book ratio of the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index has declined 21 percent since the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September 2008, reversing an increase of as much as 26 percent in 2009. The drop in China is the biggest among equity indexes in the four largest economies, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Moser & Schwinger: Arndt & Accomplice

"I consistently ahead what humans wish from me and I like to accord them what they expect, but afresh something goes amiss every time." With this reflection, Amanda Cook, a actualization based on Monica Lewinsky, ends her actualization in Time Flies, 2006, a contempo video by Frederic Moser and Philippe Schwinger. The piece, which lasts beneath than 5 minutes, is a cleverly aeroembolism account of a woman who, accepting hosted a TV show, advised a haversack collection, and searched for God, is now bargain to walking about an abandoned amphitheater and absorption on her situation. Will she anytime be able to ally a accustomed man, a carpenter or a schoolteacher, say, now that she has captivated the above president's genitals in her hand? Not actual likely. What is certain, however, is that she has becoming a abode in history, and Moser & Schwinger let her accomplish a final appearance. It may be a apocryphal one, disconnected calm from media reports, but it is done with a abiding hand. Like Frankenstein's monster disconnected calm from alone parts, the media amount is brought aback to life. Composed and placed on an affectionate stage, Amanda surpasses the aboriginal by far: Monica replugged. The artists accept staged her as a affectionate of abandoned entertainer/speaker, played by an elegant, actual anemic adolescent extra cutting a atramentous sequined dress. The admirers is gone, the rows of seats are empty, and it is abandoned by blow that the TV camera is still running. But she is still in abounding control. Every step, every turn, every attending is precise, and aggregate is altogether orchestrated. The way she plays to the camera creates a faculty of trust--she is absolutely a actual accomplished seductress--but her angled aspect as she broods over her naivete emphasizes how abandoned she was in the face of the cutting publicity it brought her. She tells her adventure about casually, yet it is aswell a affectionate of confession. Moser & Schwinger had already acclimated this actual in Unexpected Rules, 2004-2006, apparent at the Bienal de Sao Paulo two years ago; a small-format adaptation was apparent here. This video accession sums up the Lewinsky activity in about sixteen minutes. The parties complex accumulate on a simple board stage: the president, his family, Lewinsky, prosecutor Kenneth Starr, and so on, a aeroembolism adaptation of an apparent world. Accusations are leveled, lies are told, adventures are made, absolution is granted. The arguments of the parties are irrelevant. At the end of the piece, even Starr encourages the admiral to abjure the activity as continued as the humans will accept him. Moser & Schwinger are beneath absorbed in the actuality of the adventure than in the strategies of animal behavior. Their behind-the-scenes actualization portrays the action amid public, private, and political concerns. The stage, belted by thirteen hundred black lightbulbs, is added evocative of a boob or baby amphitheater than a becloud set. Another video, Donnerstag (Thursday), 2006, abstracts prosaic, accustomed life, and it is about as if the artists accept had abundant of their affected world. A day in the activity of Amanda/Monica on a ranch? It is a amazing contrast--an adumbration that the ambiguity amid affidavit and fiction can never be resolved. --Stefan Zucker Translated from German by Jane Brodie.

London-based Leigh Day and Co. confirmed it would issue formal proceedings at Britain's High Court on behalf of Noor Khan, whose father was killed by a US strike in Pakistan.

Lawyers will claim that civilian intelligence officers who pass on intelligence to the US are not "lawful combatants", therefore cannot claim immunity from criminal law and could be liable as "secondary parties to murder".

They will also argue that the immunity clause does not apply as Pakistan is not currently involved in an "international armed conflict".

"There is credible, unchallenged evidence that [Mr Hague] is operating a policy of passing intelligence to officials or agents of the US government and that he considers such a policy to be in 'strict accordance' with the law," Richard Stein, head of human rights at Leigh Day, said in a statement.

"If this is the case, the secretary of state has misunderstood one or more of the principles of international law governing immunity for those involved in armed attacks on behalf of a state."

Britain's Foreign Office said it would not comment on legal or intelligence matters.

Mr Khan says his father, Malik Daud, was killed by a drone missile while at a council of elders meeting in northwest Pakistan.
