Dragon on China Pagod, Hagaparken

Dragon on China Pagod, Hagaparken

Architect Fredrik Magnus Piper’s general plan of Haga Park shows that a Chinese summer house was planned from the outset. However, the task of designing it fell to architect Louise Jean Desprez in 1788. As with much of Haga Park, King Gustav III was involved in the design, China was the height of fashion in the 18th century, which probably contributed to the choice of a Chinese-inspired building, The East India Company’s travels and trade with Chine helped to generate huge interest in Chinese culture in Europe.

The Chinese Pagoda is an open octagonal pavilion with a tented metal roof, resting on timber columns. Each corner is decorated with a dragon’s head, originally cast in lead. There were once small brass bells in the dragon heads that chimed in the sins. There was also a large octagonal table in the middle. Around the pagoda there are still stone bases for pedestals that would have borne Chinese statues.

The pagoda has been renovated many times over the years without changing the original appearance. The colourful painting has been made to match Desprez’ watercolour drawing. A few old dragon heads in oak, which originally adorned the temple, are now in the Haga Park Museum in the Copper Tents.

The Chinese pagodas a listed historical monument and is managed by the National Property Board Sweden. Haga Park is subject to H.M. the King’s royal right of disposition.
