Fridge'o'cards
Yeah, it's February and all my holiday cards are still on my fridge. I think they'll remain there out of laziness, until I receive enough other stuff that takes precedence (like new letters/cards and other notes). Granted, Louise's invitation for her wedding in October was on my fridge until these started coming in! (Though that was partly because I'd designed it and felt a little surge of pride every time I saw it.)
Three (or four, depending on how you count) cards are from friends from Japan, three are from longtime online friends (two of whom I've met--actually, traveled with, too), and three are from Atlanta friends. Pretty awesome.
(Jen--those dozens of magnets I took at your wedding reception did come in handy!)

Evaporative cooling element recycles water through these elements to capture heat from the air drawn through them at the Roxanne Molnar Farm in Grantville, PA, on Thursday, April 21, 2001. Roxanne and Matthew Molnar have an 80,000 chicken poultry farm that received a $20,000 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant. The money is a portion of the cost to modernize the second of two 40,000 chicken capacity chicken houses. Chickens need to be kept at a comfortable temperature to remain productive. New radiant heaters keep the chickens warm during Pennsylvania winters. On warm days, ceiling vents provide passive venting of heat out of the building; when chicken house temperatures are estimated to be above 90 degrees, fans come on, pulling air through water evaporator elements lowering air temperature down 10-15 degrees and flows along the chicken house's length, in effect a tunnel of cooled air. The benefits to the chickens are heat and excess moisture removal; minimized dust and odor; limits buildup of ammonia and carbon dioxide; and provides oxygen for respiration. All these systems are computer controlled allowing owner, Roxanne Molnar to run the farm by herself and raise two small boys Gavin (2) and Grant (5). Husband, Matthew works off the farm and frequently travels, so along with the demands of parenting and manually controlling fans, vents, and having to remove the 80,000 chickens from their feeders and moving them around to cool them was an increasingly daunting task. The computer controls of the new system automate many of the daylong tasks allowing the Molnar’s to run their family farm. USDA Photography by Lance Cheung.

Chicken, pear, and gorgonzola pizza with a hint of shattered glass
During the day at work I was getting hungry and was thinking about what to have for dinner. My thoughts wandered to some Gorgonzola cheese I had in the fridge and I started thinking about what I could do with it. I had a cornmeal pizza crust in the freezer and so I thought maybe it would be good to make a chicken, pear, and gorgonzola pizza.
In the past when I made pizza with these crusts I used a circular pan. I decided to try a glass pie pan, thinking it would be easier to clean. When I placed the crust in the pan I noticed it didn't touch the bottom. I didn't think anything of it, and continued.
When I went to take the pie out of the oven I must have bumped it or something. Whatever movement it was, it was enough of a catalyst to cause a somewhat significant glass explosion. It was LOUD and VIOLENT and AWESOME. (no, really!)
Cleaning up? Not so awesome.
The good news is the pizza was untouched by glass and was quite yummy!

Dr. Renee Carter jokes that she was raised by a hotel maid and a television. It's not far from the truth. She spent most of her childhood following her poker-playing father to back-alley bars and illegal card rooms across the country. Those years were tough, but they drilled into her lessons she's never forgotten: always be observant, always be wary, and always watch your opponent.
Now an adult, Renee is a math professor at a prestigious liberal arts college in rural Ohio. While investigating a database she wasn't supposed to have, she and a colleague discover a pattern no one was supposed to find. Two weeks later, Renee is attacked and her colleague is murdered in his office. Not knowing whom she can trust, she runs. Aided by a detective with an agenda all his own, Renee's only chance to survive is to use every lesson her father taught her to unravel a conspiracy that reaches across international lines and deep into the halls of American power.

People are People
People make their own decisions in life. Decisions are neutral. Not good or bad, but may have either outcome. We've all experienced both, and they only help us learn and progress through life.
I find it really hard to judge people because everyone is constantly changing. Realistically, we are all unique. I'm all about being yourself and loving your originality regardless of decisions that affect your reputation.
People who judge you just don't understand. Let them think what they want.
You know what is right. Yet, neither of you are wrong.

"If you like submarine warfare, mixed martial arts, and a book with plot twists that keep you guessing, you'll love this military techno-thriller by T. Steven Sullivan." ~ Ben McQuerry, US Navy Retired (Submarines)
"Awesome read brother! You kept this former ground-poundin' grunt intrigued in the life of a squid!" ~ a message left for T. Steven Sullivan on Facebook.
T. Steven Sullivan, a former US Navy Diver aboard fast-attack submarines, uses his experience to craft the story of “HOT RUN”.
HOT RUN tells of 2nd Class Petty Officer Thomas Quinn, as he prepares to ship off to Officer Candidate School, to be commissioned. Quinn thinks he has the perfect mentor in his submarine’s Commanding Officer, Captain Michael Maddox. However, when a special operation brings some mysterious cargo and its foreign escorts aboard the USS Key West, it’s up to Quinn and his rag-tag band of SEAL team wannabies to find out why the interlopers seem to be gaining control over Captain Maddox and the submarine.
This story will transport you into the life of a submariner like no other submarine novel has done before. Weaved into the narrative are the subtle details which make submarines one of the most harrowing assignments in the military. From the smells of the synthetic air, to the mental fatigue which comes from having nowhere to get away, except for a coffin-sized bunk, these stresses are what the conspirators exploit to keep the crew in check as they race to use the submarine in the most grievous attack on America in history.

- Some production processes don’t need to be hooked up to the grid. This reduces demand on energy production, and reduces the net cost of manufacturing.
Power Usage Monitor
Yet another silly gadget for the home, I should probably have gone for the better featured Dr Wattson power monitor but the OWL was a hell of a lot cheaper. The usual OWL is a sensor on the meter with a transmitter which is picked up by the display units built in receiver. Shows how much power is being used, how much it's costing etc... The OWL USB Connect allows you to monitor the power usage over time on any usb equipped windows PC. Pretty nice all in all though the interface is very very basic, I'd like it better if it could track the usage historically over a much longer period of time. Hopefully there's a software update in the works... the API has been released too so maybe third party software and linux support too!
Not Recycling
At the current rate of usage, our capital cities will reach their landfill capacity by 2010, Clean Up Australia organisation claims.
Recycling is the answer. The energy saved by recycling 1 aluminium can is enough to run a television for three hours; Recycling one tonne of paper and cardboard saves 13 trees; One tonne of recycled plastic saves enough energy to power a refrigerator for a month and non recycled glass takes one million years to break down naturally.
Non-recycled plastic products cause devastation to our wildlife. Approximately 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals and countless fish each year are killed by getting entangled in plastic rings, plastic strapping and nylon ropes.

Four 2" x 3" acrylic magnet frame thingies. She made the art then inserted it inside the frame and they have an acrylic cover that snaps in--I've not seen any like these and I've not taken one apart, so I'm having a hard time describing the mechanics. Anyhoo! They are just beautiful and notice how they spell out 'DIVA'--cool! Each one is a miniature collage.
