Mid-Century Modern: Interiors, Furniture, Design Details (Conran Octopus Interiors S.) The 1950’s house was a scientific triumph, designed in a laboratory and tested on inhabitants of all ages before being built for the masses. Never had homes been so thoroughly contemporary, with antiques and period styles entirely banished. Mid-Century Modern explores the interior decor of this seminal decade, concentrating on all aspects of a home's decoration—walls, flooring, surfaces, lighting, and, of course, furniture. Case studies examine beautiful present-day homes that exhibit mid-century style in an exemplary way, and suggest ideas for taking the 1950’s look—complete with collector's pieces—and mixing and matching it with elements from other eras. (14) BOOK OF HOURS LEAF Ref 227 verso This is an illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours produced in the Eastern Netherlands, probably Utrecht, c.1480-1490. The text, in Dutch, includes the beginning of Sext in the Hours of Eternal Wisdom in the translation of Geert Groote. The size of the leaf is 147mm x 108mm (5 8/10ins. x 4 1/4ins.). On the recto is a magnificent three-sided border probably by THE ILLUMINATORS OF THE SARJIS MANUSCRIPTS. PROVENANCE: - A Professor James Marrow (one of the international experts on Dutch medieval manuscripts) has provided the following attribution: - “Your leaf is in all respects characteristic of the so-called Sarijs manuscripts, thought to have been made in Zwolle in the third and fourth quarter of the fifteenth century. For points of comparison, see the book on the manuscripts of this group by Lydia Wierda (which unfortunately for most English-language speakers exists only in Dutch), De Sarijs-handschriften. Studie naar een groep laat-middeleeuwse handschriften uit de IJsselstreek (voorheen toegeschreven aan de Agnieteberg bij Zwolle), Zwolle, 1995,and therein particularly such illustrations as figs. 32, 85, and 91, all of which have relatively closely related motifs or schemes of border decoration.” The following points, obtained from the Internet, have been extracted from a dissertation summary: - The study deals with a group of some 60 manuscripts formerly attributed to St Agnietenberg near Zwolle, a monastery of Canons Regular of the Windesheim Congregation. The manuscripts can be dated c.1470-1490. The principal clue for localization in the manuscripts themselves is the style of their decoration, which is that of the so-called Zwolle Masters. These artists are named after the monumental six-volume Bible that was written and most probably decorated as well in St. Gregory's House, the house of the Brethren of the Common Life in Zwolle. There are, however, certain obstacles to the location of the Sarijs manuscripts within the workshop of the Brethren. The fact that all Sarijs manuscripts are in the vernacular is serious argument against an assumed origin in St. Gregory’s Hlouse, given that the Brethren set themselves the task of copying, as much as possible, Latin texts. Moreover, certain characteristics of the Sarijs manuscripts, the codicological, textual and decorative aspects, speak against an origin in the workshop of the Brethren. At least 23 scribes and 16 illuminators can be distinguished, most of whom can be identified in only one or two manuscripts. This is not consistent with the particulars of book production in the chronicle of St. Gregory,s House: only twelve scribes and four illuminators are known by name, most of whom were living in the House over a considerable period. The key to the solution of the problem concerning the origin of the Sarijs manuscripts is offered by the libri accidentalium of the Domus Parva, a house situated adjacent to St. Gregory's House in Zwolle. Here, students of the famous Latin school of Johannes Cele were housed by the Brethren. It is very likely that the production of books in the Domus Parva took place on the initiative of the Brethren of St. Gregory's House. They had the means, both technical and financial, to promote production on so large a scale. On the basis of the characteristics of the Sariis manuscripts and of the knowledge about the organisation of book production in St. Gregory's House and the adjacent Domus Parva, the hypothesis is offered that the Sarijs manuscripts were among the books (partly) produced in the Domus Parva. This hypothesis not only accounts for the peculiarities of the manuscripts but also provides us with a fairly large group of manuscripts, mostly Books of Hours, that could very well have been produced, at least partly, in the Domus Parva. On the one hand, the decoration clearly points to a workshop in or at least very close to St. Gregory's House; on the other, there are the conspicuous mistakes in the calendar that would not have been made by the Brethren but that are consistent with the idea that the scribes and possibly the illuminators of most of the Sarijs manuscripts were the students housed in the Domus Parva. B There is a little modern provenance to the leaf. It belonged to an aged relative of the seller who purchased it in June 1965 from Newbegin's Bookshop in San Francisco. They had acquired it in London in the spring of 1965. On the verso of the leaf there is a dealers reference number "MS 1597". This is the referencing system used by Folio Fine Arts who were very active in the 1960's. GENERAL COMMENTS: - Whilst the smudging on the verso is unfortunate, there is only one word that can describe the decoration on the recto – STUNNING! Leaves of this quality from Dutch Books of Hours are virtually impossible to find. HOURS OF ETERNAL WISDOM: - The Hours of Eternal Wisdom, "Horologium Sapientiae", were written by Henry Suso (Also called Amandus, a name adopted in his writings Cakes, 1960's style From "Cake Icing & Decorating" 1960's ? (19) Here She Comes Again... ... the girly-girl side of me. After getting new paint and carpet, I had really wanted to change directions, and have a calm, serene, almost bare bedroom without a lot of clutter and knick-knacks. A room with no frou-frou and vintage prints covering the walls, etc, etc. But slowly the room is reverting back to it's old self. I hope this is as far as it goes. ;-) I just couldn't resist this new coverlet for spring and summer. I love my white down comforter for winter, but it's just too warm and heavy for now. bedroom I found this blanket from an antique mall. Actually, like a fool, I walked by it each visit I made, for 6 months in a row. Then, I went back to buy it (after it plagued me in my dreams) and it wasn't there! Luckily they had just moved it to into a crib in the corner of the room... but it sure gave me a scare! Living in exile in England, where this work was largely written, Marx drew on a wide-ranging knowledge of its society to support his analysis and generate fresh insights. Arguing that capitalism would create an ever-increasing division in wealth and welfare, he predicted its abolition and replacement by a system with common ownership of the means of production. "Capital" rapidly acquired readership among the leaders of social democratic parties, particularly in Russia and Germany, and ultimately throughout the world, to become a work described by Marx's friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels as 'the Bible of the Working Class'. (18) Christmas decorations display - a red & green theme I came across this indoor Christmas display with decorated trees and packages at a college library in mid-November. "Christmas" keeps appearing a little earlier every year, but I don't mind too much as long as it doesn't take away from my beloved Thanksgiving celebration of family and thanks. I was amazed at how well my Canon 40D's DIGIC processor is able to balance the color on this florescent-lighted scene. Notice how neutral-gray the floor is (white balance was just set to "Average" or "AWB"). Ten years ago, a professional photographer (like me) had to carry around a $2,000 color temperature meter and hundreds of dollars worth of assorted, 3-inch square, gelatin CC (color compensating) filters (from 2.5 CC to 50 CC in magenta, yellow, cyan, red, green, and blue) to place over the lens! Once the image was exposed to film, you couldn't adjust the color (especially any cross-overs) like we can today using Photoshop and the RAW image. I was also impressed with the new Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. I just recently replaced my $600 17-85mm IS lens with this new $800 lens. While the specs of this new lens are not much different than the previous lens, Canon was claiming that image stabilization and optical performance had improved over the older design. I agree: the annoying red/cyan "fringe" or chromatic aberration near the image corners, when zooming to the widest angle settings, has almost completely disappeared; and this 1/10 second hand-held shot was tack sharp. Typically, with the older IS (Image Stabilization) technology, I rarely could go slower than 1/20 second and get consistently sharp results. With the new IS, I've been able to consistently shoot as slow as 1/6 second with sharp results (I'm comparing both lenses at a medium zoom setting of about 35mm). Decorative Designs: Over 100 Ideas for Painted Interiors, Furniture, and Decorated Objects "In this sumptuous paperback volume, Graham Rust, the accomplished painter and muralist, showcases his distinctive vision with one hundred decorative designs for every room in the house, including objects large and small, from cupboards and firescreens to delicate miniature boxes, as well as grand mural schemes for whole rooms, executed on panels and walls. The result is both an enchanting world of exotic and colorful interiors and a practical sourcebook of ideas for amateur and professional decorators alike. Some items, such as stationery, bookplates and monograms, are suitable for everyday personal use, while a few are frankly whimsical, such as the chinoiserie dog kennel or the cocktail tray with a design of jewel-like frogs. In his previous acclaimed book on mural painting, The Painted House, Rust fulfilled his dream project of muraling an entire mansion, room by room. In Decorative Designs, he expands his vision, presenting ideas with practical application for an entire range of objects that can personalize any home, large or small. Lavishly illustrated in color throughout with original sketches alongside finished works, Decorative Designs offers a breathtaking vista of creative ideas from one of the world's leading decorative artists. A must for interior designers and decorative painters, it cannot fail to inspire anyone who dreams of creating a uniquely beautiful home." Marítime museum / Museu da Marinha English Maritime Museum The Maritime Museum (Portuguese: Museu de Marinha) of Lisbon is dedicated to all aspects of the History of navigation in Portugal. The museum is administered by the Portuguese Navy and is located in the touristic district of Belem. It occupies a part of the neo-Manueline Western wing of the Jeronimos Monastery (together with the National Museum of Archaeology) as well as a modern annex built to the North of the monastery. The history of the museum is deeply related to King Luis I (1838-1889), who was a lover of oceanographic studies and an accomplished navigator himself. He created in 1863 a collection of items related to the preservation of maritime history of Portugal, a collection that was enlarged in the following decades, culminating in the inauguration of the Maritime Museum in 1963 in its present location. The exhibits include historical paintings, archaeological items and many scale models of ships used in Portugal since the 15th century. It is one of the most visited Portuguese museums. Jeronimos Monastery The Hieronymites Monastery, is located in the Belem district of Lisbon, Portugal. This magnificent monastery can be considered one of the most prominent monuments in Lisbon and is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style (Portuguese late-Gothic). In 1983, it was classified by the UNESCO, with nearby Belem Tower, as a World Heritage Site. History The house for the Hieronymite monks was built on the same site of the Ermida do Restelo, a hermitage that was founded by Henry the Navigator at about 1450. It was at this hermitage, that was already in disrepair, that Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer before departing for India in 1497 The existing structure was started on the orders of Manuel I (1515–1521) to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful return from India. It was originally meant as a church for the burial of the House of Aviz, but it also became a house of prayer for seamen leaving or entering port. Construction of the monastery began in 1502 and took 50 years to complete. He used pedra lioz, a local gold-coloured limestone, for its construction. The building of the monastery was funded by a 5% tax on eastern spices, with the exceptions of pepper, cinnamon, and cloves, revenue from which went straight to the Crown. By this influx of riches, the architects had enough financial margin to think big. The enormous amount of funds needed for this monastery meant abandoning the construction of the Aviz pantheon in the Monastery of Batalha. The monastery was designed in the Manueline style by Diogo de Boitaca (who was probably one of the originators of this style with the Monastery of Jesus of Setubal in Setubal). He built the church, the monastery, the sacristy, and the refectory. He was succeeded by the Spaniard Joao de Castilho, who took charge of construction in around 1517. Castilho gradually moved from the Manueline style to the Plateresco style, a style with lavish decorations that remind of silver ware (plata). There were several sculptors who made their mark on this building. Nicolau Chanterene added depth with his Renaissance themes. The construction came to a halt when the king Manuel I died in 1521. The architect Diogo de Torralva resumed the construction of the monastery in 1550, adding the main chapel, the choir, and completing the two stories of the monastery, using only Renaissance motifs. His work was continued in 1571 by Jerome de Rouen (also called Jeronimo de Ruao) who added some Classical elements. The construction stopped in 1580 with the union of Spain and Portugal, because the building of the Escorial in Spain was now draining away all the funds. The monastery withstood the Great Earthquake of 1755 without too much damage. But when the building became vacant in 1833 by the abolition of the religious orders in Portugal, it began to deteriorate to the point of almost collapsing. A cupola was later added to the southwestern tower. On December 13, 2007, the Treaty of Lisbon was signed at the monastery, laying down the basis for the reform of the European Union. South portal The ornate main entrance to the monastery was designed by Joao de Castilho and is considered as one of the most magnificent of his time. This shrine-like portal is large, 32 m high and 12 m wide, extending up for two stories. It features, surrounded by an abundance of gables, pinnacles, many carved figures standing under a baldachin in exquisitely carved niches, around a statue of Henry the Navigator, standing on a pedestal between the two doors. The tympanum, above the double door, displays in half-relief two scenes from the life of Saint Jerome. On the left, the removal of a thorn by St. Jerome from a lion's paw, after which the lion became his best friend. The right scene depicts the saint in the desert. The spandrel between these scenes shows the coat-of-arms of king Manuel I. The statue with the sword in the niche of the pier prob Winnetou I, Lex Barker German postcard, E 23. Photo: Constantin. Still from Winnetou I (1963, Harald Reinl) with Lex Barker. Caption: "Old Shatterhand has also been sentenced to die at the stake. He regrets emphatically, that he rescued Winnetou from the Kiowas. An ordeal by battle will decide." For many people born in the 1950’s or 1960’s Winnetou was one of our favorite heroes. Based on the novels written by Karl May (1942-1912) German director Harald Reinl and producer Horst Wendlandt came up with a series of eurowesterns which didn?t copy the American western. The European audience rewarded this and Winnetou I (1963, Harald Reinl) became a huge success and was followed by the sequels II and III. Nonetheless Winnetou I (officially Winnetou - 1. Teil and in English titled Apache Gold or Winnetou the Warrior) wasn?t the first film about the fictional Native American hero. One year earlier Horst Wendlandt had produced Der Schatz im Silbersee/Treasure of Silver Lake (1962, Harald Reinl) which became the most successful German film of the 1962/1963 season beating such films as Dr.No. Ok, The Karl May films are most fun to watch, when they remind you of your childhood, otherwise they may seem a bit too naive and cheesy. Der Schatz im Silbersee/Treasure of Silver Lake and Winnetou I starred Lex Barker in the role of Old Shatterhand and French actor Pierre Brice as Apache-chief Winnetou. They both came up with a very fine performance and Brice, born in 1929, stayed Winnetou throughout his whole life. He played Winnetou in several sequels and after the Karl May period started to fade he performed this role on several stages in Germany. The music of German composer Martin Bottcher remains one of the best soundtracks ever composed. In 1962 the Winnetou theme stayed at top of the German charts for more than 17 weeks. Bottcher’s soundtrack with its famous title melody played on the harmonica by Rene Giessen is still breathtaking and works well with the romantic landscape. Principal shooting usually took place in national park Paklenica karst river canyon, Yugoslavia now Croatia. The early films preceded the Spaghetti western. The storyline of every Karl May film is basically the same. The two friends Winnetou and Old Shatterhand try to solve the problems between red and white people and in the end they succeed, of course. According to Karl May's story, first-person narrator Old Shatterhand encounters Winnetou and after initial dramatic events, a true friendship between Old Shatterhand and the Apache Winnetou arises; on many occasions they give proof of great fighting skill but also of compassion for other human beings. It portrays a belief in an innate ‘goodness’ of mankind. Karl May was with about 200 million copies worldwide one of the best selling German writers of all time. In the books of Karl May Winnetou became the chief of the tribe of the Mescalero Apaches (and of the Apaches in general, with the Navaho included) after his father Intschu-tschuna and his sister Nscho-tschi were slain by the white bandit Santer. He rode a horse called Iltschi (Wind) and had a famous rifle called "Silberbuchse" (The Silver Gun, a double-barrel rifle whose stock and butt were decorated with silver studs). Old Shatterhand became the blood brother of Winnetou and rode the brother of Iltschi, called Hatatitla (Lightning). Karl May's "Winnetou" novels symbolize, to some extent, a romantic desire for a simpler life in close contact with nature. In fact, the popularity of the series is due in large part to the ability of the stories to tantalize fantasies many Europeans had and have for this more untamed environment. In 2001 a parody of the Winnetou films, Der Schuh des Manitu, was directed by Michael Herbig. "A thief, an impostor, a sexual pervert, a grotesque prophet of a sham Messiah!"..."The Third Reich is Karl May's ultimate triumph!" wrote Klaus Mann, son of Thomas Mann in 1940. To which Albert Einstein replied: "...even today he has been dear to me in many a desperate hour." Herman Hesse called his books "indispensable and eternal" and the director Carl Zuckmayer even christened his daughter Winnetou in honor of May's great Apache chief. Yet, the English-speaking world is almost totally ignorant of May and his heroes Winnetou, Old Shatterhand or Kara Ben Nemsi and his Arab friend Hadji Halef Omar who shared many an adventure in what is now called Kurdistan just over a hundred years ago. The reason is simple. Almost none of May's books have ever been translated into English. Sources:Wikipedia, Julian Crandall Hollick (Karl May's Imaginary America), and IMDb. Egg Painting 2009 It's that time of year again to break out the eggs and dyes to add some color to the house. Or, if you're me, it's that time again to have deviled eggs and egg salad sandwiches. Either way, Easter is here again, and the traditional activities make for great photo opportunities. This year Marna and Paige colored eggs while I was at work, which was kind of a bummer, because I like taking these pictures so much, but they hadn't finished all the decorations at the same time. This morning then, before we headed out to Grandpa Rich and Grandma Janelle's house for the annual easter egg hunt, Paige and Marna sat down for a while to add Disney princess stickers as the final touch. This gave me a chance to take a few photos, which made me very happy. The problem was that the stickers wouldn't stick to the cold eggs (or at least that was our guess). Note to product development teams at Disney, if you're going to lend your brand to once-a-year activities that are really important to people, it might do you good to actually try them out first. While she looks happy here, Paige was quite frustrated that her princess stickers didn't stick. The activity then was short-lived, but I did manage to get a few pictures in before we had to move on. In case you're wondering, yes, this is posed, as Paige doesn't actually walk around holding eggs to her cheeks while smiling. With all the sticker problems, I needed something more, so I asked her to pose for me. And surprisingly, she did! I have pictures of her kissing an egg, as well as playing "Vanna" with one (smile). And I even got a few decent smiles out of her along the way. Steps. Disney Concert Hall. Explore. February 17, 2009. A study in monochrome. Sepia. (16) Bits and Pieces of Inspiration I've finally found the inspiration I was needing to get started on a plan for decorating the house. I love the creative process; once it starts, I find it hard to sleep for the noise of the wheels turning in my head :) The ideas come so fast, it's hard to keep up with them, so I keep a notebook with my drawings and bits from magazines and catalogs that serve to remind me of the basic design I am working to achieve. The things you see here are ideas for my master bathroom. A bit of drama, some sparkle, a little elegance. All the things I love so much. And yes, the wine and chocolate helps :D Funky Lorry - Side Outside the conference building was this rather funky tanker. The Modern Japanese Tea Room The Modern Japanese Tea Room showcases chashitsus, traditional Japanese tea ceremony salons, as reconceived by contemporary architects and designers. The formal tea ceremony developed in the fifteenth century, and its ritual is closely defined, as is the space for it: traditionally, chashitsus include windows, an alcove (tokonoma) with flowers and painted parchment, bamboo beds (tatami), and a fireplace on the floor (ro); they do not include furniture, in part because they are spaces for meditation. More recently those traditions--as closely associated with the upper class as ""high tea"" is in England and its colonies--have been rediscovered by architects and designers as a perfect match for their contemporary work. The Modern Japanese Tea Room includes projects from renowned Japanese names including Kengo Kuma, Terunobu Fujimori, Shigeru Uchida, Arata Isozaki, Chitoshi Kihara, Yasujirou Aoki and Hisanobu Tsujimura. Their work in a wide variety of materials--paper, wood, plastic, aluminum, glass, concrete--represents the latest and most inspiring in Japanese architecture and interior design, from a tree house in Nagano to a portable space in black lacquer. The Modern Japanese Tea Room opens with an introduction to the history of the tea ceremony, identifying its physical elements and going over to the ceremony itself, and then moves on to more than 35 projects gathered together in 250 of Michael Freeman's powerful color images. A tribute to contemporary Japanese culture and a taste of its future. Shaw Area Rugs: Renaissance Rug: Circa: Cranberry Red 01800: 2'6"x7'9" Runner Manufacturer: Shaw RugsCollection: Renaissance RugsStyle: Circa: 01800: Cranberry RedSpecs: 100% NylonOrigin: United StatesRenaissance marks a rebirth of design, color and value in the area rug market. It's here that the practicality and softness of Shaw's EverTouch nylon and the aesthetic natural quality of antique carpets come together in a single collection of fine rugs that, undoubtedly, blurs the line between handmade and machine-made. The colors in this collection combine the neutral tones of antique carpets with the punch of today's most influential accent colors to coordinate with more fabrics. (6) Family Room before and after The family room is where we spend the majority of our time together. We painted it a warm cranberry color and added our flat screen TV above the fireplace (thanks Rusty for making that happen!). An accent rug gives the room a cozy feel and the tapestry/leather couches are from our old place...they fit the decor perfectly! What a difference a little paint and some accents make! I really love my family room! cranberry sauce recipe KARONS CRANBERRY SAUCE 1 pkg cranberries 1/4 C water 1 C sugar 1 orange 2 inches ginger Wash & pick over cranberries. Sumac - Wall Decor 15th July 2007 - While dining at Sumac, which is located on Cockle Bay Wharf, or Harbourside to be more correct, I was quite fascinated by the internal decor choices by the restauranteur. I must admit, even though the majority of the wall decor is all fake, from my assumption, it still has a quite an aesthetically pleasing appeal to it. The whole restaurant had a whole rustic feel to it all. I suppose it was quite apt, since the restaurant itself had a Mediterranean flavour; that's not saying that the restaurant itself tasted like Mediterranean. rustic wall decor Looking for a terrific mirror that brings out the best in your decor? Monica - Under Love's Wing is a beautiful and highly detailed angel."In the shadows of Thy wings will I make my refuge." -Psalms 57:1 (15) Details from an industry event I finally got around to editing a few images I shot for a great florist that works out of our studio. It was an industry event showcase at a really cool and trendy location in Miami. Yes it was a couple of month ago (notice the use of the word finally), but I finally (there it is again) got a few done and delivered today. Its nice to kind of take yourself out of the comfort zone every now and then to see what you can create. I actually wish that I shot a few more while I was there. I shaved the batch down to about 40 that I liked and did minimal processing. As for now, here is one I shot just before I grabbed a fork and snuck a taste out of the backside of the cake (LOL!)
