Sve je počelo s Marilyn Monroe
Početkom daleke 1954. Hugh Hefner objavio je prvi broj lifestyle magazina za muškarce s Marilin Monroe na naslovnici. Playboy je u posljednji tren dobio baš to ime, u igri je bio naziv Stag Party (momačka večer). Hefner je odmah snažno utjecao na stil života tadašnjih muškaraca, u isto je vrijeme povlađujući muškoj čitateljskoj publici afirmirao slobodniji pogled na spolnost te žensku ljepotu i ženu općenito. U srpnju 1955. godine objavljena je prva duplerica djevojke iz susjedstva na kojoj zanosnim oblinama, samosvjesno i slobodno pozira njegova službenica s odjela pretplate, stanovita Janet Pilgrim. Svoju viziju Hefner veže uz Playboy koji mora biti otvoren, liberalan i svjež: njegov magazin je tako prvi u predstavljanju brojnih tehničkih novotarija, propagira uživanje i avanturu, bira ljude iz politike i show-businessa koje će predstaviti čitateljskoj publici, također prati filmska, glazbena, književna i općenito umjetnička kretanja. Krajem šezdesetih i početkom sedamdesetih intervju u Playboyu postaje institucija za sebe, Fidel Castro, Martin Luther King Jr. i Malcolm X trpe mješavinu unakrsnog ispitivanja i psihoanalize, LeRoy Neiman, Pablo Picasso, Herb Davidson objavljuju angažirane ilustracije protiv rata u Vijetnamu i protiv američke desnice koja prijeti demokraciji, a u vrijeme eksperimentiranja s drogama i rađanja filozofije slobodnog seksa Playboy objavljuje članke o kemijski stimuliranom vođenju ljubavi, dok naslovnica pršti u psihodeličnim bojama. Tih godina magazin objavljuje i prve fotografije na kojima se vide stidne dlačice. Iako je to časopis za muškarce koji rado čitaju i žene, mali broj muškaraca se može pohvaliti da je završio na naslovnici Playboya. Jedan od prvih je bio Burt Reynolds. Krajem sedamdesetih i početkom osamdesetih nastupa era koju Hefner naziva ăseksualnim makartizmom", objavljuje fotografije nepoznatog bildera Arnolda Schwarzeneggera, učvršćuje Playboyevu reputaciju literarne izvrsnosti objavljujući kratke priče sjajnih književnika onog vremena kao što su Paul Theroux, Arthur C. Devedesetih godina Hefnerov magazin se bori protiv represivne seksualne politike, pravno pomaže slabije novine koje se bave sličnom tematikom, ruga se političarima. Pamela Anderson pojavljuje se rekordni trinaesti put na naslovnici. Playboy čini sve da bi mušku pažnju zadržao na seksu, makar morao objavljivati članke o špijunaži i automobilima. U dvadeset i prvom stoljeću Playboy se i dalje odupire poplavi raznih časopisa koji ciljaju na "tvrdu" mušku publiku. U svojoj pedesetogodišnjoj misiji, nakon što je odgojio desetke generacija muškaraca koji duboko poštuju ljepši rod, a usavršavanje drže svojom dužnošću, teško da će novu konkurenciju shvatiti kao prijetnju.
