The second part of my diary that I wrote almost 10 years ago. I am going back again in October. The quality of the pictures I am showing now is reason enough to go back, but I have a lot of renaissane research to do as well... Yes... I admit, I'm a genuin Renaissance Freak.

October 5th, 1.02 p.m. Piazza Santa Croce.

As I said I walked across the Ponte Vecchio. This is the only bridge in Florence that survived the bombing by the Germans in August 1944. There are just jewelers here. Cartier and other famous names are all around. The shops were built in 1593. Here you can buy fake iron (mainly gold) and fake glass (mainly diamonds). My mother would go absolutely berserk in this place.

Above these shops there is a kind of hallway. It runs from the Uffizi to the Palazzo Pitti. This was built to make sure that the Medici's could go from home to work without the chance of an assasination.

Once I crossed the river Arno, I thought it would be a nice idea to visit the Palazzo Pitti. When I arrived I found out that I had to pay 6 to 8 guilders for every floor that I wanted to visit. Even for the Boboli-gardens, free entrance according to my little guide, I had to pay 6 guilders. In retrospect I think I misunderstood it. But I was really disappointed when I walked back to the center of the city. From a distance I saw the San Miniato church. It is the oldest church in Florence. I took a picture of it and decided to visit it... Later.

Now I am sitting near the Chiesa Santa Croce. The front looks a bit like the Duomo. They are even both under reconstruction. My guide tells me that there are frescoes by Giotto inside the church. If this is the proper way to estimate the date that it was build, I think it dates from 1320 or so. I admit that this is not really scientifically correct, an expert would probably laugh at me, but it is good enough for me. O.K. Let's get inside. Next to me I see a German couple writing postcards. They are using an old pedestal for a table...

1.50 p.m.. Inside the Chiesa Santa Croce.

I feel a bit embarrased to take pictures of peoples graves in this church. But at the same time I realise that I do not visit this church everyday. I mean this is the church where Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei are burried!!! Apart from that the graves themselves are beautifull works of art. Again I notice that I am impressed by the atmosphere in this church. Much more than in the huge chilly Duomo I feel surrounded by a blanket of tranquility, this in spite of al the Japanese and German tourists that tiptoe through the church. The frescoes by Giotto are amazingly well preserved considering their age of about 670 years. A little while ago I tripped over one of the stairs that you have to climb to get to the frescoes. An old Italian man that I did not understand helped me to get up again. I smiled at him and thanked him. "Grazie.", I play-backed. I also met an American woman. She was about 60 years old. She was accompanied by a younger man, I think it was her son. Standing in front of Michelangelo's grave that was indicated by a cardboard arrow she cried out: "What the hell has this gotta do with Michelangelo?!" My answer:"It's his grave, Miss" She replied:"Oh gosh!!!" Later she told me that they visited The 'Rijksmuseum' in Amsterdam the day before:"Just for Rembrandts paintings."

3.47 p.m. Near the Uffizi.

I decided to take a look at the Uffizi again. The line of people is now only 100 meters long. If it shrinks a little more I might consider to get inside. But first I want to check the closing time.

Well, it's open until 7.00 p.m. if my guide is correct. I think I will wait until tomorrow morning. The problem is that I don't know how to spend the rest of this day. I feel a bit tired. 15 Minutes ago I had two Tunafish-salad sandwiches and a beer in Grand Cafe "Queen Elizabeth". How original! I think I will attempt to get inside the Uffizi, anyway.

Yes! I am in!!! After a lot of stairs I stil don't see paintings by Michelangelo or Raphael. I do see a few beautiful statues and painting by artist that are unknown to me. This is fantastic! And it is so very quiet!!!

In a room with paintings by Botticelli I see a painting "Adoration of the child Jezus." , by Hugo van der Goes. Some parts of this look familiar, but the name doesn't ring a bell. I hope I'll remember to look it up when I am home again. The "Primavera" and "Birth of Venus" are very pretty and at least as big as I imagined them to be. But the paintings "Cullunia" and "Madonna Melagrani" are more beautiful to my opinion. Unfortunatelly I can not take any pictures. The guards are very strict. Every second there is an alarm ringing somewhere when one of the visitors comes to close to the priceless masterpieces that are on display. Christened the 1904 MC in homage to the birth of Cartier watchmaking, the first self-winding movement to be entirely produced by Cartier perpetuates the vitality of an approach that is driven by a constant desire to go further. The conquest of time took on a whole new meaning in 1904 when Louis Cartier created a watch for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. It was one of the very first watches to be worn on the wrist and enabled the pilot to read the time while keeping his hands on the controls during flight. This exciting development was born from passion, a taste for adventure, and a pioneering spirit that propelled watchmaking firmly into the modern era. Mount Etna
Mount Etna, also known as Muncibe??u in Sicilian and Mongibello in Italian, a combination of Latin mons and Arabic gibel, both meaning mountain) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, close to Messina and Catania. Its Arabic name was Jebel Utlamat (the Mountain of Fire). It is the second largest active volcano in Europe, currently standing 3,329 metres (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions; the mountain is 21 m (69 ft) lower now than it was in 1981. It is the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Etna covers an area of 1,190 km? (460 sq mi) with a basal circumference of 140 km. This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. Only Mount Teide in Tenerife surpasses it in the whole of the European region (though geographically Tenerife is an island of Africa).

Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of eruption. It is also believed to be the world’s oldest active volcano. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations.

Geological history
Volcanic activity at Etna began about half a million years ago, with eruptions occurring beneath the sea off the coastline of Sicily. 300,000 years ago, volcanism began occurring to the southwest of the present-day summit, before activity moved towards the present center 170,000 years ago. Eruptions at this time built up the first major volcanic edifice, forming a strato-volcano in alternating explosive and effusive eruptions. The growth of the mountain was occasionally interrupted by major eruptions leading to the collapse of the summit to form calderas.

From about 35,000 to 15,000 years ago, Etna experienced some highly explosive eruptions, generating large pyroclastic flows which left extensive ignimbrite deposits. Ash from these eruptions has been found as far away as Rome, 800 km to the north.

Thousands of years ago, the eastern flank of the mountain experienced a catastrophic collapse, generating an enormous landslide in an event similar to that seen in the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The landslide left a large depression in the side of the volcano, known as ‘Valle del Bove’ (Valley of the Ox). Research published in 2006 suggests that this occurred around 6000 BC, and caused a huge tsunami which left its mark in several places in the eastern Mediterranean. It may have been the reason that the settlement of Atlit Yam (Israel), now below sea level, was suddenly abandoned around that time.

The steep walls of the Valley have suffered subsequent collapse on numerous occasions. The strata exposed in the valley walls provide an important and easily accessible record of Etna’s eruptive history.

The most recent collapse event at the summit of Etna is thought to have occurred about 2,000 years ago, forming what is known as the Piano Caldera. This caldera has been almost entirely filled by subsequent lava eruptions, but is still visible as a distinct break in the slope of the mountain near the base of the present-day summit cone.

Historical eruptions
Eruptions of Etna are not all the same. Some occur at the summit, where there are currently (as of 2008) four distinct craters – the Northeast Crater, the Voragine, the Bocca Nuova, and the Southeast Crater. Other eruptions occur on the flanks, where there are more than 300 vents, ranging in size from small holes in the ground to large craters hundreds of meters across. Summit eruptions can be highly explosive and are extremely spectacular, but are rarely threatening for the inhabited areas around the volcano. On the contrary, flank eruptions can occur down to a few hundred meters altitude, close to or even well within the populated areas. Numerous villages and small towns lie around or on cones of past flank eruptions. Since the year 1600 A.D., there have been at least 60 flank eruptions and countless summit eruptions; nearly half of these have occurred since the start of the 20th century, and the 3rd millennium has seen five flank eruptions of Etna so far, in 2001, 2002-2003, 2004-2005,2007 and 2008.

The first known record of an eruption at Etna is that of Diodorus Siculus.

Forgive me, O Mother, I’ve borne such hurt,

Poisons, corruptions have hurt me within,

Healed in an instant all my wounds beside,
Yet left deeper wound, sharper pain.
Now how could I bear this joy in my breast,

She looked on my face, and none has yet seen
Such a shine that sparkled from her eyes.
On a frozen landscape the light of that mien
Could warm mountain tops, melt snow and ice.
Now my heart’s every wish was there to glean
Sorrows and sweetness, gall and fresh spice,
Hunger and thirst and the wants of my breast
Eternity be yours for this bequest,
O Maria della Salute, O Blessed!

Was all of this splendor for such as me?
This prize like a miracle mine?
All these golden fruits, now ripe on the tree,
Indeed all for me, in life’s decline?
O rarest fruit, you, so sweet to see,

Two forces struggled for mastery in me,
Mine against heart, against flesh’s yoke,

All broken hearted, my mind scored with fears,
I hold her memory a holy shirine.
Now in later years, whene’er she appears,
t’s as thought God’s face were here, Divine.
Within me the ice of agony thaws;
Throuth her I see; all knowledge is mine.
Why are our wise minds perplexed and distressed,

In sleep she comes, all silent, refusing
The loud rabble-cry of my desire.
When she will speak, the time of her choosing.
At her command she holds strange power,
And all around her, in clouds suffusing,
A heavenly pattern of charming hours.

We hold one another as man and wife,
Without unhappiness, without care,
Halcyon days, wich no fever of life,
Our passions cooled by heavenly air.
She’s older now, and there is no strife;

For us our children are poems I have made,
Timeless traces of our elation,
A written text, neither sung, nor e ’en said,
Only the soul’s ray’s penetration.

When the time of my doom comes round at last,
When I break my head ‘gainst life’s jagged stone,
My dream will be born with Death’s rattling brass;

Primitive ring, love it or hate it.... I love it!!!

Plain copper handmade adjustable ring, from solid copper wire and crushed rounds.

I made this ring using only simple tools, hammered it to give it a nice texture, burned it to a warm deep rosey color, and buffed it to a nice shine..

The beautiful patina was achieved through flame and fire, without any use of chemicals. The copper is left untreated, so the patina will continue to develop over time.

This ring will fit most regular fingers, as it is adjustable. The size is US-7.5 (no15). (2cm diameter)

I don't do real well with sunglasses.

I lose them.

If I don't lose them, I break them.

Today I couldn't find the pair that I have held onto for the longest, a pair that I don't even like, but since I could still find them, and they had yet to break, they were winning by default.

Until today, when they went missing.

Oh yeah - I hate to spend loads of cash on a pair of sunglasses.

So while squintily making the rounds today (after helping emdot pick out frames for her new goggles) I recalled recently seeing a sign in the window of Urban Outfitters that said "All sunglasses $10."

Like I said, I hate to pay alot for glasses, but I figured I could bite the bullet and fork over $10 in exchange for a few more months of eyesight.

Sure enough, the sign was still there. I walked in and headed directly upstairs for the clearance/bargain section, which is the only place I ever really look in Urban Outfitters. To my pleasure I find some glasses there that I actually like, and even better, they are marked down from $20 not to $10, but to $4.99.

These glasses remind me of some of my favorite glasses ever, some antique US Army issues which I found at a yard sale in L.A., but which, of course, soon broke.

These look like reproductions of those same glasses, and at $4.99 and with my history, I decide that I may as well pick up 3 pair and that way have a backup supply to last me at least through the Summer.

So I make my way back downstairs to the cash register, near which I find the actual "All sun glasses $10 display." There are no pairs of the cool glasses I found upstairs, just ugly, more expensive ones.

At the register the girl say's something about me really liking the glasses, and I tell her my tale of sunglass woe. She looks up after ringing one pair up and say's "Well I think you're going to be really happy, because these are discounted."

I say "I know, only $4.99", and she tells me "No, they have been further reduced, to $1.99."

I hesitate a few seconds before turning around and heading back up the stairs. There were no more green pairs, but I got some brown pairs and 1 black pair for good measure.

I ended up with 8 pairs, and for some reason one pair only cost .10c, so I got 8 pairs for $14.03 (before tax).

My fear now is losing the 7 pairs I'm not using. I need to make a sunglass dispenser. Or have an extra pair that I always keep in my car, one extra pair that I always keep in my bike bag, maybe a few pairs in a time capsule, etc....
