Flower - Flor

Phylogenetically, the flower is a modified branch. The flower is considered typical of angiosperms, and is composed of four whorls ( "floors") of modified leaves (antofilos). Crossing the axis of the flower from its base toward the end, we find successively:

The sepals are those involving the other sheets in the early stages of development, when the flower is just an asshole. They also avoid entomofilas in the species, the insects from accessing the nectar without going through the stigmas and stamens. The sepals are often welded to form a structure that justifies the name ACOPA calyx (cup) which designates the whole of the sepals.
The petals are, in typical cases, sheets of bright colors that attract pollinators to visually. All the petals as the corolla.
The stamens are highly modified leaves bearing male organs, bags poles (microsporangios), residing in the anthers, each of which rely on a filament. The stamens can be very numerous, but more often they are one or two times the number of petals. At the base of the stamens may be nectar-producing glands (nectaries), which in other cases they are part of the petals. All the stamens are called androecium.
Finally the upper leaves more and more attached to the shaft are the carpels. These carriers are female, called seminal rudiments or ova, which arise after fertilization, the seed. The carpels may form one or more organs called ovaries. The fruit is formed mainly by the transformation of the ovary or ovaries, but sometimes involving other parties, especially when the ovary is sunk into the stem of the flower, known in the thalamus, where they inserted the various floral parts ( infer ovary). The set of carpels is called gynoecium.

Banana Flower

Banana Flower

Explore, December 11, 2009 #290

The banana flower is a large, dark purple-red blossom that grows from the end of a bunch of bananas. Its sizable bracts, or leaves, snugly enclose delicate, sweetly scented male flowers. The female flowers, which do not require fertilization to become fruit, grow farther up the stem from the male flowers.

The banana flower is treated in several Asian and tropical cuisines as a vegetable. It is known in Japan as banana no tsubomi, in Thailand as dok kluai, in Indonesia as jantung pisang, in China as shang chao fua, in Sri Lanka as kehel mal, and in India as kere kafool. The words “banana flower” are variously translated as “banana blossom,” “banana heart,” due to its physical resemblance to that organ, or “plantain blossom.”

Once the tougher, darker outer bracts are pulled away, the paler and more tender inner leaves are used in a number of dishes, prepared in a variety of ways. A fresh, tender banana flower may be sliced and served raw, as in Thailand, where it is often accompanied by the hot and spicy dip called nam prik. It is also served simmered in soup or fried with thin noodles.

Hairstyles of the Damned is an honest and affectionate depiction of wanting to belong, but never quite belonging. Following the riotous exploits of Brian, a Catholic school malcontent, and his best friend Gretchen, a punk rock girl fond of brawling, this work of fiction unflinchingly pursues the truth in discovering what it means to develop your own identity.

Feng Fu - Spanish Needle 3 - Bidens pilosa

Feng Fu - Spanish Needle 3 - Bidens pilosa

One of our most common weeds, but what a useful plant.

In Colombia it goes by these names; cadillo , masquia, or papunga chipaca.

Young leaves sometimes eaten raw or steamed, but the taste can be a bit strong. In Zimbabwe the leaves are boiled with peanut butter and eaten. Bidens pilosa is eaten in Africa as a vegetable.

Added to salads or steamed and added to soups and stews, they can also be dried for later use. A good source of iodine. Young shoot tips are used to make a tea.

A juice made from the leaves is used to dress wounds and ulcers. A decoction of the leaves is anti-inflammatory, styptic and alterative]. The whole plant is antirheumatic, it is also used in enemas to treat intestinal ailments. Day 4. Ahem, our very own Philippines against 2006 Champ – France. It was a very tight night. I chose this picture to my set because it shows one of the unique features that the Philippines’ Pyro had among other competitors. FYI, hours before this spectacular night, thought it would be cancelled due to rainshowers.

His prolific inventiveness and technical versatility made him the dominant figure in avant-garde art in the first half of the 20th century. Following his Blue period (1901–04) and Rose period (1905–06), he developed cubism (1908–14). In the 1920s and 1930s he adopted a neoclassical figurative style

Pablo Picasso.
Dying Bull.

"Picasso is the most documented artist of our time," commented William S. Lieberman, the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Chairman of the Metropolitan's Department of 20th Century Art. "Surprisingly, however, his prolific production as a sculptor and painter in clay has not been significantly surveyed in exhibition or publication. This presentation brilliantly demonstrates how Picasso vitalized the medium with characteristic enthusiasm and originality."
Showing the different ways in which Picasso worked in clay, pieces in the exhibition range from pre-existing forms or found objects to inventive shapes created by local potters according to Picasso's designs and pieces modeled by the artist himself. Most works come from private collections, from the Picasso museums in Paris, Antibes, and Barcelona, and from the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Museo de Ceramica in Barcelona.
Picasso began to work in the ceramic medium in 1946 after visiting the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris, where the mineral-rich soil of this region of southern France had supported a ceramics industry since Roman times.
He had first experimented with clay in 1905, when he modeled a small group of heads, some of which were later cast in bronze. Vase with Bathers, of 1929, included in the exhibition, is an early effort that is remarkable for the ways in which the relationship of imagery and technique to the pottery form anticipate Picasso's approach to his later ceramics.
In the earliest stage of his work in ceramics, he focused on mastering the craft aspect of decorating fired clay objects, working on more than a thousand pieces at the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris during the first year alone. Quickly acquiring knowledge of the technical aspects of working with clay, he then set about reinventing them to suit his fertile imagination; the unorthodox manners in which he mixed glazes, slips, and oxides transformed the pieces in the kiln and became part of the creative process.
Early in his work at the Madoura workshop Picasso also took standard, press-molded plates before they were dry and, in a number of instances, gouged or incised the surfaces with still lifes, trompe l'oeil arrangements of food, or other objects, to create versions of the popular Spanish platos de engano ('plates to fool the eye'). Other times, he used the surface of the plates as settings for mythological scenes involving fauns, goats, centaurs, and other Picassoesque creatures.
Picasso soon began to draw sketches of three-dimensional objects made up of familiar pottery forms such as vases, jugs, and bowls. These pieces were thrown by Jules Agard — a local potter who was a friend of Madoura owners Georges and Suzanne Ramie — according to specification and then were assembled and decorated by Picasso. Ordinary thrown vessels were thus metamorphosed into purely sculptural shapes, rearrangements of traditional ceramic elements that robbed them of their original functions and turned them into art.
Among the most remarkable pots that the artist himself designed are the zoomorphic shapes he first conceived in the fall of 1947. By reassembling component parts of standard ceramic shapes Picasso created the bulls, goats, birds of his imagination, such as Bird of 1947-48. He continued to develop ideas along this theme by converting existing Madoura shapes into animal forms principally by means of painting. Man Riding a Horse (1950-51) and the related Mounted Cavalier (1950-51) make use of his own earlier bird form, but the neck and the handles of the vessel are turned into a rider whose horse is painted on the belly of the pot.
On other occasions Picasso simply altered traditional forms by hand, as in his tanagras, which usually were made by reshaping thrown bottles or vases and were so called because of their reference to Hellenistic terracotta figurines.
Picasso's enthusiasm for the bullfight was rekindled on a return visit to the Mediterranean, and the imagery of the corridas appears throughout Picasso's work in clay, with heads of matadors, picadors, and bulls often depicted on plates or bowls. In 1951, he turned a series of oval platters from Madoura's stock pattern into lively, colorful impressions of the bullfight, with the border full of spectators and the flat part of the dish becoming the sandy arena where the drama of the actual fight takes place. Included in this exhibition are three dazzling bowls from the 29-bowl Ceret series — named for a village in the foothills of the Pyrenees revisited by Picasso in 1953 — that show various scenes of the bullfight, and two platters created in 1957 that, like aquatints, were done simply in black on white.
Picasso also often transformed vases into still-lifes, creating a three-dimensional representation of the object painted on the vessel's surface. In Still Life with Yellow Tulips (1953), painted flowers and leaves occupy the top part of a jug, while the lower part is painted

Saint Malachy

Saint Malachy

Saint Malachy O’More

Malachy was best known for his prophesies on the Papacy. Although he did a lot more than that! He was the first ever saint from Ireland to be formally canonised. Born at the end of the eleventh century he was to become the man who would establish Roman Catholic practices on the Irish Catholic tradition. Although he wasn’t the first bishop of Armagh he was reportedly the first Archbishop of Armagh when it was elevated in 1152 when he would have been 58 (having been born in 1094) although he was traditionally only 35 when he was appointed Archbishop. History and Tradition don’t match on this point!

Malachy was however responsible for the harmonisation of Irish liturgy with the Roman Rite. The Stowe Missal was replaced due to his endeavours. He was friends with St Bernard of Clairvaux and through his influence the Cistercians established a firm base in Ireland. Even to this day the Cistercian tradition is strong in Ireland. If you look through the RUINS set on my Flickr site you will see the ruins of many old Cistercian monasteries – Tintern Abbey and Dunbrody Abbey in Wexford to the east, Jerpoint and Gowran (St Mary’s Abbey) in Kilkenny to my north, the sea to my south and Mount Mellary and Glencairn Abbey in Waterford to my west are both occupied with Cistercians to this day. A long tradition that stretches back to Malachy’s friendship with Bernard.

If you’ve read this far you are probably looking for information on his prophecies. By and large that is what he is best known for. They are loose string on words that can fit any occasion.

FLOS FLORUM – flower of flowers; Paul VI had fleurs-de-lis in his coat-of-arms. The link is tenuous to say the least. Almost all church art uses flowers with roses and lilies so one of these flowers was bound to appear in his life as pope. Had I been elected pope in 1963 my interest in wildflowers would have been cited as the fulfilment of the prophecy.

DE MEDIETATE LUNAE – of the half-moon; John Paul I was elected on a half moon. Of course the half-moon is not an unusual occurrence so coincidence cannot be ruled out here. A more convincing link comes from his name Albino Luciani which means ‘white light’. Again my own name is often mistakenly translated as ‘Bright Man’ from Fear Geal, and geal is half of gealach which means moon so half my name is half the moon’s name!!! But it’s not (see the note below); however, anybody who is half-mad would qualify for this label.
[Note: ‘gal’ as a suffix in Irish means; large, treacherous, dangerous; the oldest recorded spelling is - Ferghal – and had only one ‘l’ and no diphthong!]

DE LABORE SOLIS – of the work of the sun; this one had to be stretched for John Paul II. In our hemisphere the sun is to the south but John Paul was born on a solar eclipse. And like the sun he came out of the east – well, it’s east if you live in western Europe but it is the middle of the European continent which starts at the Tatras and ends in Belmullet. Japan lies off the west coast of North America!
John Paul is hard to link to the sun in any way. Some have suggested that his travels had him coming in from the sky by airplane like the sun – and I think – haven’t we got past the stage of being awed by air travel? Had he been Japanese or come from a background where he worked as a farm labourer in southern Africa maybe – sunny Poland in an aeroplane is stretching it too far. Somebody has to come up with something better on this one.

GLORIA OLIVAE – the Glory of the Olive; the infamous ‘black pope’ theory. In the Book of Kings the glory of the olive is its oil that cheers the hearts of God and men! [sic] The Olive Branch is a symbol of peace and the crest of many organisations such as the Benedictine Order – and yes you got it! BENEDICT!
Prior to his election the popular theories were that this pope would be connected to the dark fruit of the olive or the colour black.
An African Cardinal
A Benedictine (The Benedictines are also referred to as Olivetians)
A Jesuit (Black Pope is a nickname for the Superior General of the Jesuits)
A Dominican (Blackfriar)
Me (black humour)
Anybody who has ever worked in peace & reconciliation (nearly all priests
covered safely here)
Anybody who worked in the Middle East, Nigeria or Venezuela or in the
petrochemical area of industry – the oil that cheers both men and men [not sic]
Let’s be honest – it’s not that hard to find a way of making ‘the Glory of the Olive’ fit to any situation.
