share 013 I participated in Bella Enchanted's Easter Swap this year and was partnered with Jill over at Baliwick Designs. I had a lot of fun putting together this basket for Jill. I started with a Vintage Hallmark basket with stenciled blue bunnies and pink crimped paper grass. I found this adorable wire chick in my stash and put a cute purple bow on him and filled him caramel filled Hershey's sticks, Ferrero Rocher and a bag of pink gourmet jelly beans. Easter baskets are all about fun right? Oh, and lots of candy. I found an adorable shaggy bunny, a Mr. & Mrs. Resin bunny statues, some sparkle painted egg refrigerator magnets, a couple of egg tripod stands and pastel painted eggs, blue and green polka dot napkins, 3 fat quarters in Easter prints, mini stringed carrot garland, cherry bath crystals for a bubble bath, and I peppered the basket with Hershey's kisses, Chiclets (remember those?), Russell Stover Marshmallow eggs, Ghirardelli dark chocolate caramel filled squares, caramel filled Cadbury eggs and chocolate truffle eggs and the accented the basket with yellow lilies and of course PEEPS, green chicks and pink bunnies. Fire Escapes; Simpson Street Sign We had special relationships with neighbors like Ethel and Morris. Ethel and Morris were a young couple who lived upstairs in our building on Home Street. They had no children and Ethel was ga ga over me. Her husband, Morris, had just been drafted and she needed a second family. The fit was perfect. She would care for me all the time so my mother could go shopping, visit friends, and take care of the house. Ethel would dress me, bathe me, and hold me close in her bed. One day she made the terrible error of taking me to a movie. The name of the movie was The Mummy. It was the first movie I had ever been to. When we came into the dark theater, I thought the theatre was moving. After she assured me it was not, we began seeing the mummy, who had been lying still, begin to rise. I let out a scream, and with supernatural animal strength climbed over everyone in our row, screaming shrieks of death as I then ran up the aisle and on to the street and toward our house, which was many blocks from the theatre. I knew exactly where Home Street was and where I was headed. Well, poor Ethel finally caught up with me and made it all go away somehow – mostly by telling me it was not real and that to look around and notice that there was no mummies here. It was just in that theater. I cannot say that I never again went to another movie, but some time did pass before the second movie experience. Some while later, Morris returned from the Army with a missing leg. He was so quiet and I was ridiculous. I just could not understand what happened to his leg. He was so kind to me and really appreciated my stupid questions, which seemed to reflect his own heart. He, too, could not understand what happened. In any case, our friendships continued until they moved away. They needed to change to go back to their parents. I always will love and miss them both. During this time, the local county board of the Office of Price Administration issued every man, woman and child a ration book during the war. The book held stamps, which Americans used to buy rationed foods. Government officials rationed some food because of limited supply. So much food needed to be set aside for military use that the government restricted civilian purchases. County boards rationed sugar, coffee, meat, butter, margarine, cheese, canned milk, canned fish, canned fruits and vegetables, soups and fruit juices. Shortages of rubber led to the rationing of tires and gasoline. The government also prohibited the making of many household appliances because of a lack of metals. We could not buy hot water heaters, refrigerators, stoves, lawn mowers, vacuums, irons, radios and toasters. The government needed rubber and metals to make airplanes, trucks, tanks, ships and rifles. We had to ration food and materials to help win the war. American responses to rationing varied from cheerful compliance to resigned grumbling to instances of black market subversion and profiteering. We were cajoled into giving over to the government all our spare tires except one, many going along with this gambit. These were almost never used, but accumulated in mountainous piles all over the country and spent the war rotting in these junk yards instead of helping to "win the war." The kindergarten I attended was at a house near Home Street run by volunteer ladies and containing various rooms where I learned to identify and arrange blocks. Finally, my mother was asked not to bring me anymore because I was building very large structures which eventually toppled and could (but did not) hurt the other children. They said I was too advanced and individualistic. This did not make my mom happy and she complained. It was a shame because it was one of those things that gave my mom a sense of normalcy and contact with other nice women. I knew she was very disappointed and irate about their rejection. She, indeed, took it personally and was insulted. How dare they! I am sure this added to her already well-formed disdain of society and its wiles. My brother was not yet born and the war was on; everything worked off of ration stamps and long lines. The kindergarten building was red brick and had a backyard. Corn Dodgers I was watching True Grit this afternoon, and Rooster Cogburn kept eating these little cakes out of a satchel that he called "corn dodgers". I was curious, so I looked them up, and found the history and recipe below on this site, and made them. They're actually pretty tasty. Even Mattie Ross might like these. "Abraham Lincoln was raised on these little oval cornmeal cakes, George Washington Carver took them to school, and John Wayne used them for target practice in the movie True Grit. Dating back to the 1800s, the first corn dodgers were made from "hot water corn bread," a mixture of cornmeal, pork fat, salt, and boiling water that was formed into small oblong loaves and baked. Similar recipes were given different names depending on how the dough was shaped and cooked. Corn pone have the same oblong shape as dodgers, but are pan-fried in lots of oil. Johnnycakes are flattened into small pancakes, then griddle-fried. Ashcakes are rounds of dough wrapped in cabbage leaves, then placed in the ashes of the campfire to cook. Hoecakes are formed into small pancakes, then placed on the flat side of a garden hoe (really!) and cooked over the campfire. * 2 tablespoons corn or vegetable oil * 2 cups yellow cornmeal * 1-1/2 tablespoons sugar * 1/2 teaspoon baking soda * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 2 cups water * 1 cup buttermilk * 1 tablespoon unsalted butter * 2 teaspoons baking powder * 1 large egg 1. Adjust the oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 450 degrees. Brush 1 tablespoon of the oil on a rimmed baking sheet. 2. Whisk the cornmeal, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Combine the water, buttermilk, and butter in a large saucepan. In a slow, steady stream whisk the cornmeal mixture into the liquid. Cook the mixture over medium-high heat, whisking constantly, until the water is absorbed and the mixture is very thick, about 6 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool until warm, about 10 minutes. Whisk the baking powder and egg in a small bowl, then stir into the cornmeal mixture. 3. Fill a medium bowl with tap water. Scoop out a generous 2 tablespoons of the mixture and, using wet hands, form into a 4 by 1-1/2-inch loaf shape. Place on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining mixture, spacing the dodgers about 1/2 inch apart. Brush with the remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Bake until deep brown on the bottom and golden brown on top, rotating the pan halfway through baking, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer the corn dodgers to a rack to cool slightly. Serve warm. (The corn dodgers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days; reheat on a baking sheet in a 350-degree oven.) Notes from the Test Kitchen: Most 19th-century recipe we tried yielded corn dodgers that were dense, gritty, and hard as a brick. Starting with the base recipe of cornmeal, salt, butter, and hot water, we added a bit of sugar (just 1-1/2 tablespoons) to bring out the cornmeal's sweet side. Replacing some of the water with buttermilk gave the dodgers a tangy flavor that tasters loved. Baking soda (which reacts with the buttermilk) and baking powder helped to lighten the dodgers considerably, and a single egg provided richness and gave the dodgers a creamy interior." food meals sandwiches egg salad 2 Recipe in description. Hard-boil four eggs. After cooled and peeled, finely mince the eggs with a fork in a rounded bowl. 2. Finely dice: tomato, half-onion. Add to minced eggs and stir thoroughly. 3. Add pickle relish, mustard, habanero sauce, garlic powder, vinegar, salt and pepper, season-all; do NOT add mayonnaise. 4. Mix/stir well until all ingredients are even. Refrigerate until cold. 5. And Candy Marinowski, who moved in with her parents last year after losing a leg to diptheria, says the odor is so horrendous she’s decided to give the streets another try. “At least I’ll be away from that stench.” Investigators at Down County Building Permits Division agree there’s a problem and are currently conducting tests to address over 100 homeowner complaints. There’s also a class-action suit which alleges defective drywall isn’t confined to Flubug. At least three other states are embroiled in similar battles. Tests and lawsuits, however, are small comfort for those trapped in foul-smelling homes. Nor is the knowledge that the drywall probably came from China. “Who cares where it came from?” says Bill Russell. “Yee put it in and Yee should take it out!” District Attorney Mayweather Simms, who empathizes with the homeowners, agrees: "It's economically and emotionally devastating. In most cases, the interior has to be gutted while the homeowner pays the mortgage and rent for temporary housing. I think the installer has plenty of culpability.” Judy Willowbrook sees more than culpability in the drywall’s installation... she sees a conspiracy. "My washing machine, dryer, microwave and refrigerator have all broken down because of this drywall. And who sells the only appliances in town? Yee Tran Minh. Description: The processes of desalination and sea-salt production currently produce large quantities of by-product, in the form of brine and bitterns, which is generally regarded as waste. This article explores the scope for exploiting the hygroscopic salts occurring in these by-products - such as magnesium, calcium and sodium chloride - as desiccant solutions in a greenhouse cooling system. These solutions are compared to other liquid desiccants more conventionally used in solar-driven refrigeration: namely solutions of lithium chloride, lithium bromide and zinc chloride. To establish which properties are relevant, we discuss the relation of the properties of the liquid desiccant to the attributes of the greenhouse as a whole. A property of primary importance is hygroscopicity, as quantified by the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH). Further properties reviewed include cost, availability, density, viscosity, specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, heat of dilution, water absorption capacity, human- and ecotoxicity, and corrosivity. Calculations based on five locations (Tunis, Jiddah, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai and Bangkok) show that the liquid desiccant should have ERH @?50% to give improved cooling compared to both direct and indirect evaporative systems. Except for sodium chloride, all six salts considered meet this requirement. Magnesium chloride is the most abundant salt in seawater bitterns and both magnesium and calcium chloride stand out as being of low toxicity. Their hygroscopic properties, though inferior to those of the lithium and zinc salts, make them suitable for cooling of greenhouses (even if not of human dwellings). We envisage an integrated desalination and agricultural system, comprising a solar desalination plant supplying freshwater (for irrigation) and bitterns (for cooling) to greenhouses, enabling efficient water use and local crop production in hot climates.
