In honor of my little brother getting engaged... this is a photo I took of the ring before he ran back to Michigan with it.


This ring is reflective of my grandmothers (one of which I never knew). The center piece was taken from my maternal grandmother's ring and the two side diamonds are from my mother's "engagement" ring which was composed of diamonds from my paternal grandma.

Today I went downtown to take pictures at sunset to photograph around the foot bridge area next to Town Lake. Traffic was horrible so I took A LOT of backroads and with my strange sense of direction I somehow ended up at Zilker Park. I wasn't going to make it to the foot bridge in time and I saw that the Zilker Tree was just starting to sprout its beautiful spring leaves so while I was driving in I decided that was going to be my main thing for today. But as I pulled into a parking spot directly in front of me sitting at a table was Al. I let out a little squeak of enlightenment when I saw him because lately, for those of you who follow my work, I haven't posted anything for 100 Strangers in a while. I live in Austin so I see homeless people all the time but I've found that I can't just photograph anybody, they really have to hit me. It's hard to explain but I immediately feel a gravitational pull of curiosity when I see people like Al and the others I've photographed for 100 Strangers. So I went over to him, introduced myself, told him about the project and he told me his story.

"Boy could I tell you some stories!"

Al is originally from Arkansas, he had a great life when he was younger, he got a scholarship to school for track and got a degree in marketing. He never ended up using his degree but he held a great job for a long while. I then asked him why he came to Austin.

Al came to Texas trying to escape a bad divorce. He told me his wife had 4 different personalities and was very unstable with her emotions. I suppose if you put a name on it, it's called multiple personality disorder. He told me about the many trials they had, him trying to adapt to her ways, her saying hurtful things, him saying hurtful things back, "You know that saying, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? That's bullshit! Words hurt a lot!" Eventually he began to lose his temper with her and they would continue to say hurtful things to one another. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, "the worst thing I did was lose my temper. Young man, if I could give you a piece of advice, it would be to never lose your temper, no matter what, once you lose your temper you're never right. Never." He went on to tell me about his family, he has 4 kids, 2 dogs, 3 cats, he had a great job and owned four and half acres of land, his wife didn't have to work because he provided for the whole family. Then when he and his wife had a messy divorce he had no choice but to leave his family and move elsewhere.

He came to Austin when he was 40 years old and got a great job working with E.B. Construction downtown. He held that job for a good while and then relapsed on cocaine and lost his job, he then lost his apartment and was out on the street. He told me that he has been addicted to cocaine for a number of years and has been off and on for a long time. He then said to me, "I love it, everything about it. It's such a euphoric experience and I've never been able to stop. Sometimes, I'd just have a girl show up at my apartment with a handful of crack, she'd undress herself, put the crack on the table and say, lets have some fun." He grabbed his hair like he was going to pull it out and yelled, "AHHHHH! HOW CAN YOU RESIST THAT?!?!" He shook his head for a while and chuckled, while I laughed for a good while and then he said, "The thing about cocaine is it's very corrosive and I've lost all my teeth.", He smiled at me and laughed. "I'm not saying I recommend it but that shit feels goooooddddd."

He paused for a moment and squinted his eyes. "Give me your finger." he said. I hesitantly raised my hand and he grabbed it laughing, "I ain't gonna bite you! I just want to show you something!" He placed my finger on his cheek and I immediately felt a missing piece of his cheek bone. "Ya feel that? That's where I got shot."

Back in Arkansas, Al used to have a job working at an EZ Mart as a cashier, one day a guy came in with a gun trying to rob the store. The robber leaned over the counter and put the gun at an angle behind Al's left ear. All that was in the cash register were food stamps and change so Al put the food stamps and a hand full of change on the counter, Al reached to get more change out of the register but the robber didn't want the change and yelled "that's enough!" Al turned his head slightly when he had said this, the robber then shot Al and ran out of the store. Al was shot at enough of an angle when he had turned towards the robber to where the shot didn't go all the way through his head, it entered through the back of his ear and out just below Al's left eye, shattering part of his cheek bone. (He grabbed his cheek and told me that part of the bullet was still in his cheek, he said it was lodged in the upper part of his cheek and over the years it has slowly moved down his face)

yes, i dropped the ring. (but, the setting...the lake..water...scenery would have been perfect!) also to answer more questions about who took these pictures...my camera has a continuos shot function where it can shoot multiple pictures as long as the shutter button is pushed down, so i read on a forum to wrap a rubber band around it to get all these shots. For lunch, it took about 277 pictures in a span of 5minutes and 215 pictures in a span of 4 minutes on the beach. who took all these pictures? (tripod, camera, and rubberband...machines)

A suitable picture for a brief hiatus from flickr. My wedding t'other day was a jolly success and much joy was had. Much food was eaten and the cheezy disco party afterwards was also rather delightful. I'd post some pictures on here but oddly enough I didn't take any that day.

After waiting for a little while and building up the tension in a rather warm waiting room inside Leeds Town Hall, we went in and the service started. Because of the combination of heat and nerves, the rings ended up being fairly tough to get on our fingers. After struggling for a few moments, the ring (finally) went on and I said louder than I'd have liked "get in there!" to a small chuckle from the crowd, who may or may not have understood my dilemma. A more memorably dodgy female complicates everybody's life in Tension (1950), the next-to-last Hollywood film for director John Berry before his blacklisting. This one's played by Audrey Totter--never a major star, but a delicious and definitive late-'40s dame. Her milquetoast husband, pharmacist Richard Basehart, sets up a second identity for himself under which to seek revenge for her numerous infidelities--till the new man he has become makes the acquaintance of neighbor Cyd Charisse. (No, Charisse does not dance, but those awesome legs are nevertheless put to creative use.) Eventually someone is dead, and cops Barry Sullivan and William Conrad enter the picture, contributing their own shades of gray to the noir palette.
