I was out walking Bodie near the Shelton Derby Dam, and that's where we found her. I thought it was extremely strange, so I called D. and asked him if ferrets are wild animals in Connecticut, and he said that she must have been somebody's pet. I took Bodie home, found a treat, and went back out there to see if she would come to me... and she did :) I took her home and found a good place for her away from the other animals, because she was covered in fleas... My awesome neighbor drove me to a pet store so I could buy some ferret food and flea/tick shampoo. I bathed her, gave her food, and did my best to make her happy :) I called the ferret association of Connecticut (FACT), and they told me that she had most likely been dumped there. Apparently people have been known to do that, especially this time of year. This is why I don't like people... We took her to the vet on Oct. 22, and he said she was perfectly healthy :) He gave her some shots, and cleaned her ears. She is now living happily in a giant cage in our living room :D We need to buy a playpen for her, so she can run around without the other animals bothering her :P Cages: Pre-CandC #1 In April 2008, Baudman arrived with a dowry, including an All Living Things cage with 1.58 sq-ft of interior space. The next day, I added a Clean Living octagonal play pen with 9 sq-ft of interior space, for a combined total of 10.58 sq-ft of space. The Clean Living playpen cover is being used as a moisture-resistant floor. The bedding is fleece-on-towels in the playpen, and CareFRESH Original and Ultra in the cage. The hay is in a small paper bag on the floor of the playpen. Add water, oil, vinegar and vanilla; stir with spoon or wire whisk just until batter is smooth and ingredients are well blended. Pour into greased and floured 9-inch layer pan or 8-inch square pan. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until tester comes out clean. Cool in pan; frost as desired. CLEAN thurible Once snubbed by a consummate thurifer for being "too dirty," this is the thurible after I used a suggestion from Church of the Advent: acetone. It instantly dissolves all the creosote-like gunk. But be careful - the gunk re-sets if you don't wipe it off immediately, I put the acetone in a spray bottle which helps prevent waste, and follow immediately with a toothbrush (on the inside) and dish soap. When you're all done, you may need to use some polish on the metal (or the baking soda-salt-tin foil method if it's silver). Right after the divorce in ’73, my very lovely and creative ex moved out of state dragging my two kids with her on the coattails of a new “cough-cough* prospect, who at this time I don’t seem to be able to recall his name or the names that came after. However, what I do recall is that I was for sure that I was going to lose what bond I had with my kids, because, my kids being out of state was no different from them being on the moon. IT was too far away. However with every good and nature abiding curse there will always be an upside. At the time my curse just happened to be that I slipped into a marriage as such a young and naive age. I had just turned 18, and for a wedding present I was given a full time job hauling concrete for the local construction site. The upside is that my daughter was born soon after the marriage (very soon after) and so Uncle Sam decided to rescind his invitation for me to spend a little vacation in Cambodia. Which was a good thing because I thought killing men, women and children was going to be a little more difficult than shooting a few pidgins off the clothesline with my Red Ryder bb gun. However the real curse of the marriage was not the divorce but that I missed my kids. The upside: Even though they were not near we grew closer, closer that I could have ever imagined. During the 70’s they never gave up on me during my drug addictions and in the late 80’s after being clean for nearly 10 years I was able to return that same love when they both fell headfirst deep into the abyss. Needless to say those were hard times for all of us but that too passed. My daughter now lives in Arizona with her life partner Angie and has never been happier. My son is very successful in a gardening business that he created with his wife and they are expecting their second child. (Our first girl). The final step was Skip McCormick "Trigger Slick," a fine Moly-Graphite compound for smoothing-in 1911A1 pistol trigger/sear surfaces. A few times all the way in and out with that, and it was smooth as butter. my workbench at one of its tidier moments This is my bench, cleaned up a bit for a photo, but messy nonetheless. Things usually are dustier and less organized. An awful lot of the bench surface is showing here-- much more than usual. I think she looks a little lighter in colour now, and her eyes seem brighter to me too, but I'm not sure how well this shows in the photographs. I know that I removed some of the 50-odd years of surface dirt because of the dirty patches on the wash cloth! I was very nervous cleaning her head because it is made from something very firm beneath the fabric ~ some sort of moulded card or papier mache, perhaps. I was very careful not to saturate any part of Ethel~Maud during the cleaning process and thankfully all went well! I was pleased that it was nice and warm here yesterday as it meant she was able to dry naturally but fairly quickly :-) I had mixed results with the pen marks on her face and leg ~ I have uploaded close-up photos. All-in-all, though, I am very pleased with Ethel~Maud's spa session and she is, too ;-) As you can see, I have also made her a new outfit ~ finally LOL I crocheted everything using a 50/50 cotton/acrylic blend yarn, which is really nice to work with. Ethel~Maud's new dress is simply a small piece of crocheted ripple; four "peaks" and "valleys" was enough to make this simple sheath. I made a short lengh of chain to thread through the front and back "peaks", giving a sort of halter-neck effect. I made the matching shawl using a 7mm hook and treble (US double) crochet with a simple chain edging :-) Her shoes were another make-it-up-as-I-went-along effort LOL They aren't as pretty as the ones Firuzan (angelsinmysecretgarden) makes but at least they are nicer than Ethel~Maud's old black boots. I asked her if she would like a bag to match her shoes, and Ethel~Maud very shyly asked if I could possibly make something fairly large. I'm not sure what she intends to put in it but hopefully she will have plenty of room! Ethel~Maud seems to be very conscious of her somewhat receding hairline so I asked if she would like a pretty headdress. She was so thrilled when I showed her what I had made and said that it reminds her a little of Frida Kahlo! 1st Find @ Longest yard sale hwy 27 Didn't know what she was, only knew she deserved better. Hubby spotted her first, came & told me about her. Said, "You have your clorox wipes with you?" Not knowing we were going to stop anywhere I didn't have them w/me. He said, I touched a doll over yonder and I'm sticky nasty. I just had to go see what he was talking about then. As I rounded the corner she said,"lady give the man two dollars or it's suicide for me." I approached the man that owned her and told him she is filthy and deserves a new home, how about 1.00 , he acted as if he didn't hear me. I then proceeded to the truck where hubby was telling him the man ignored me. He said, go offer him 2.00 and so I did, he took it, I ask for a bag to put her in and she had to ride in the back of the truck. I layed her down in the tub when I got home and took a nap before I dug into that dirty mess. As I began to scrub a smile emerged from her face. I was then able to see she still had life in her. Anytime Finley Clarke's Nephew, that'd be me, David Robert Crews, was living and working at Finley's Katahdin Lodge and Camps, David was the Lodge's sole grass cutter and weed whacker. I wouldn't have it any other way. And my Uncle Finley and his wife, my Aunt Martha, both completely agreed with me. In November of 1968, I moved, from where I grew up in Dundalk, Maryland, a Baltimore County suburb of Baltimore City, to Katahdin Lodge of Patten, Maine, to begin living and working at the Lodge. I graduated from Dundalk High School on June 5, 1968, and had planned on joining the Merchant Marines before my official Army draft notice came. That way, I could not be drafted into the US Army, trained as an infantryman and sent to die in Vietnam. At that time in our nation's history, most young Americans thought that all military draftees were sent to Vietnam as infantrymen. And that few ever returned home fully alive. In November of '68, I figured that I had about another year before my draft notice arrived in the mail. So I stayed at Katahdin Lodge, and my father drove back home to the Baltimore suburbs alone. And I experienced my first wintertime in northern Maine. Eventually, after a great winter spent at Katahdin Lodge, with my Uncle Fin and Aunt Marty, a few paying lodge guests, along with plenty enough of the finest kind of Mainers, especially the country girls, and after doing a whole lotta' snowmobile riding, but mostly doing a whole lotta' hard, often dangerous physical labor, I became a Registered Maine Guide--who specialized in guiding bear hunters. I was the right man for the job. Especially when it came time for keeping the Lodge's roofs, walkways, parking areas and large horseshoe shaped driveway shoveled or plowed free from the record snowfall of the winter of 1968-69 and for keeping the Lodge's substantial, rocky lawns mowed and looking good. All through my teenage years, while still living in Dundalk, I had shoveled neighborhood sidewalks and driveways, and had mowed and trimmed neighborhood lawns for money. My way of viewing doing that work was similar to how some other young men view being on an organized football team. Participating whole heartedly in football practice and playing football games is a very physically, mentally and emotionally demanding challenge. And in order to be, and feel, successful, and to win any games, football players must love 'tackling' those multiple layers of challenges. They must also learn to understand and respect their opponents. You already know that mowing lawns or shoveling snow can also be a very physically, mentally and emotionally demanding challenge. Many teens, especially today's computer dependent teens, do not want to mow any lawns or shovel anything at all around their house, or anybody else's. Other teens love working out in gyms and being on sports teams. The average kid thinks of lawn mowing and snow shoveling as being a serious, frustrating hassle. But I approached it fr February 11th, 2010 - 42/365 This is a first! Actually, it is a second. Completing a shot before 10:30pm! I think the first time was January 1st… and the last time. Oh the feeling is great. So great… I might be able to get some work done, and or clean my hard disk up or actually go and take some photos with no real significant purpose. What a fucking novel idea. I might even take the night off. This is all too much for me. Two things about this shot. I am, as you might of gathered, a fully qualified carpenter, graphic designer and budding photographer. My life is a constant change of hats, as you also would of prolly noticed I am quite the avid fan of the hat, especially in the shot. It might of been years of partying, gigs and the likes, but a different hat for every occasion really helps me remember what I am supposed to focus on at that moment. No, I am not scatted or anything… it's just I have a thing with pulling off the part. The other week when I was levelling out a baseball pitch… yes we have them in Australia… I actually wore a baseball shirt to each day I was out there. Most days I ended up taking it off and working shirtless, but the idea was there. I just want to know, if I am a Dodgers and Mariners fan (yes, I go for two teams, fuck you if you have a problem… it's not my national sport so just get the fuck over it =D) Sorry, went off there for a bit… what was I saying, oh yeah, the only shirt I have is a St Louis Cardinal and a Cleveland Indians/ Chicago Wihite Sox hat. Well, Ryan, that is an interesting anecdote. Isn't it? So, back to the shot, I have been working on another side project that today, I finally started to put together. It has taken me a week to get to this point and I still need to sand the fucking thing down. Let me just say, you want an awesome strip show… sand rare timber, first with 120 grit, then 240, then 320… my god, it might just be me… but seeing completely naked timber is an inspirational experience. I wanted a shot that documented this pivotal moment. Secondly, When I woke up, at 6am the sun that was beaming through my window was simply magnificent. The day took a rather gloomy turn and I am glad that I took this when I did. I have also been looking into 70's photography, how they would smear a film over the lens and then do a shot using the sun as the back drop behind the subject… So whilst this isn't as perfect as I would of wanted it to be… it still gives me an idea of what I would use at a later point in some other project. Tip: don't use Vasoline. It is a cunt to get off… simple sweat and pva glue was used here. This is pretty much SOOC. I had a reflective device on the desk to illuminate my head. Peace out. The first place I worked at was Druckers Department Store. My official job was stock boy, but I did many other jobs as well. This included taking out the trash. One day Walter Drucker asked me to throw out some old boxes of catalogs, and magazines. He was in the midst of cleaning his office and in some kind of "out with the old and in with the new" mood. (Which was rare) I removed the boxes from his office but before I put them outside in the trash for collection I sifted through the contents just to see what was there because ever since I was a small boy I have always loved reading magazines for recreation, and I still do so to this very day. (I currently receive over 100 a month) In going through the boxes I came across a magazine that was published as part of the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee (75th) Anniversary of the founding of Rutherford Borough. This magazine was in nearly mint condition. I flipped through the pages and saw that it contained a short text on the complete history of Rutherford Borough along with photographs to show what the different parts of the town looked like in the early years prior to the Diamond Jubilee. I thought to myself "What a neat piece of memorabilia!", and without hesitation I decided to keep this magazine. I have kept it for more than 30 years not really knowing what to do with it, except that it was too good to throw away. Rather than keep this to myself I thought that this magazine's contents would be good material to make into a photo album for the members of Classmates Rutherford High School Section. Started out with by cracking my head on a shelf while trying not to trip over one of my cats. Then work was completely hectic. My brain was mush when I left the office. I grabbed a quick bite at home, then rushed to get gas (I was on fumes), then off to my part time job at Weight Watchers. I think everyone in town decided to sign up tonight. It was crazy busy. When I got home, I found out that our freezer kicked the bucket a few days ago. Lost a lot of chicken (see Day 40 of 365), a few frozen pizzas and some frozen Indian and Thai dinners. Thankfully the Hubby discovered it and cleaned up a lot of it. He missed out on having some frozen raviolis, ended up with a toasted tomato sandwich instead. What a day. I'll be glad when it is done. My photo tonight is a representation of the inside of my head - a scrambled mess at the moment. Here's hoping I get a good night's sleep and tomorrow is better.
