like a bull in a china shop That's me! I blame the residual headache drugs. But I have to say, the gentleman who appeared like magic within 2 seconds of this jar hitting the floor? Was the NICEST retail employee I have encountered in a month of Sundays. In fact, everyone who works at this Kroger in Cabot has a pleasant, helpful attitude. I think they drug the water there, or something. Posts and floor for new sheep shed We need a place for the sheep away from the goats so I got the posts and a thin layer of concrete down to make it clean up easier. Turkey Sandwich & Spinach/Mandarin Salad Freshly Sliced, Home Cooked Turkey Breast on 100% Wheat Bread with a Spinach/Mandarin Salad (includes red onions, mandarins, a careful hint of blue cheese w/Ginger Mandarin Dressing and Flax seed oil). Option: Slivered Almonds are also delicious. For the reason that sandwiches are the number one item eaten by Americans, we must be aware of the fact that most lunch meats are processed and contain nitrites and nitrates, which are preservatives, coloring and flavoring additives and have been linked to cancer. Thus, we must choose our lunch- meats carefully (of course all other food items also). Fresh Meats are always a plus for making a delicious sandwich. Tip of the Day: A great way to make a healthy and delicious sandwich is to either (1) purchase sliced meat from your grocer's deli (although this could be a bit costly by the pound) or (2) you may purchase a fresh Turkey Breast to prepare and cook to your likings. After turkey has cooled, slice to your desired thickness and store in an air tight container for the duration of the week. 228 i woke up today feeling much better, ironically not having taken my crazy pill last night. owen and i went picture taking today and had lunch at mandola's italian market. oh lord, pot roast and gorgonzola sandwich, the few bites i stole of his lasagna, chocolate cake with coffee buttercream icing! anyway, all the tea and coke drinking caught up with us, and we just happened to be driving by bailey playground on 33rd by seton. so this is the bathroom i found us. ^_^ there aren't lights, just sky lights. the door doesn't really close, and owen could hear me peeing outside. surprisingly the toilet was clean, though. then the swinging commenced! my mom boycott worked. she left two messages on owen's phone, so i finally called her back this afternoon. she told sarah if she ever wanted to drive her crazy, cut the line of communication. "your sister knows how to press all my buttons," she said. our problems stemmed from one of my sister sarah's teachers, a 27-year-old pencil dick named mr. burnett. he is a creep, and on more than one occasion sarah has called him a creepy perv to his face. he takes pictures of the girls half his age with his cell phone, he called sarah bitchy, sent her an IM while she was in his class that said "you suck," and then called her fat in front of the whole class. mom had a talking-to with him, wherein he pulled the trick my real father always did. he pretended like nothing had ever happened and apologized for whatever it was that sarah perceived as an attack on her. he said he'd apologize to her the next day. his apology? "sorry for being an asshole. i owe you more than that, but that's all i've got." apparently this was acceptable to mom and sarah, and neither of them wanted to report this to the headmaster. thus began the epic brown-oakes battle royale of 2008. my coworkers got a good show as i yell and cussed over the phone, and many a scathing text message was sent. as it happens, just like i told mother, this wasn't the first time he's done something like this. he was pulled from class last week before the headmaster even knew anything about sarah. mom reported what he'd done to sarah, and now we can only pray he won't be allowed to teach there again. at least this time mom told the headmaster, "if he comes back, i'm going to have a real problem with that." so, anyway, conflict resolved. she saw where i was coming from and even said i was right. i told her i'm always right, but she doesn't agree. my main argument was that this is bigger than sarah, it affected every girl he will come into contact with. i guess it just took knowing he actually does do that to other girls for them to see that. 11/15/08 14:24 EDM 114 Draw something ugly you love .... and keep for sentimental reasons. Journal about it, too: Mom’s Old Pot - for berrying, corn, lobster and now coffee roasting supplies I’d wondered for days what ugly thing I had that I really loved. And on the right day, it popped for me: Mom’s old corn and lobster boiling pot she gave me a few years ago when paring down her kitchen. It’s ugly all right - dinged and dented and discolored aluminum that current wisdom claims is unhealthy to cook in. But I love the thing. How many nights did we gorge on fresh corn that we’d picked, husked and dropped in just minutes before? And how often has Mom treated me as a grownup to succulent lobster, boiled just so, and sucked on for an hour down to the very last sweet bit in those tiny legs? Then there were all the times that pot was my blueberrying pail. I’d fill the tall juice can hanging from my belt, then carefully empty it half a dozen times into the pot, nestled in moss so it wouldn’t tip and make me do the work all over. Just looking at the pot, I’m back in the shade of the tallest bushes, off past the woods, listening to the towhees saluting, “Drink your tea-ea-ea!” with my dog lying under the bush, stripping the lowest berries so together we could pick the bush clean. These days it sits next to my stove, holding my coffee-roasting notebook and pages of tasting notes, my weighing bowl and wide-mouth funnel, and maybe a bag or two of green beans I want to roast next session. Still functional, still loved though terribly ugly, and connecting me to more than 60 years of history, family, geography and good food. Apparently if you secure it in the river for an hour or two, the current will wash it clean. Web shots 08102 Self Portrait. Very little post processing on this one. Taken on a trip to the Miracle Mile in Wyoming on the last weekend in March of 08 with a few of my pals. The fishing was no good because of the weather but it created ideal conditions for me. So this place is somewhere my family has been taking me forever. My grandparents have a little Airstream trailer that sits up at the river year round. Propane heat, oven and stove. Roughing it, with a little comfort mixed in. Conditions can be pretty rough, both in summer and winter.....and in March! It's a long way out on dirt roads that see VERY little activity. If you break down it could be a day before you see anyone. On this trip we were reminded of just how vulnerable we as humans are to nature. On Sunday, the day we planned to leave, we awoke to a little snow on the ground and pretty cold temperatures. It really wasn't sticking to the ground though. The boys weren't afraid and they tried their luck at the fishing again that morning. After a few hours they called it quits and we started to pack up and clean the trailer. My buddy really wanted to try and land a fish in the tough conditions so he went down to the river to try one last time before we headed home. I joined him, to try and take a few photos of him fishing in the snow. As soon as we got to the river the snow picked up a little. Then a lot. He had barely gotten himself into the freezing cold water before he turned around and looked at me like, "Holy $%@#, we should probably get out of here!" And we did. We locked up the trailer and hit the road. Now my buddies were in a 4 wheel drive Jeep and I was in a front wheel drive Altima. No chains. We drove in on dry roads and we were leaving in blizzard conditions. There are a few different roads leading out of the Mile and I had to choose which one to take. One road takes you up and over a pass but once you get over the pass the roads are paved and it's the shortest route. The other way is pretty flat but it's out on the plains and many times the road drifts over and it's hard to see where the road is. Sometimes the drifts are 10 feet tall and then you're screwed, for lack of a better term. So I thought we'd try our luck at the pass. Yeah, not so much. The first major hill and my car started spinning about three quarters of the way up. Luckily we hadn't gone down that road long before we realized it was not an option. We turned around, or rather my car did a donut and turned me around and we headed the other way. I've driven in white out conditions before but nothing prepared me for the journey I, and my trusty friends, would take. Just like I suspected the road was full of drifts and with the blizzard conditions visibility was next to nothing. For two and a half hours I followed a few little bushes sticking out of the road hoping that I was on the right path. Honestly it was hard to see if I was on the road or out in the prairie. White as white could be. We made it off of the dirt roads and to a little town called Hanna. Now if you've ever been to Wyoming you know that outside of a few of the "major" cities, EVERYTHING closes down at 6pm on a Sunday. We rolled into town about 5:55. Just enough time for me to get a pack of smokes at the grocery store and trust me I needed them. The folks at the store told us EVERY road out of Hanna was closed. Hanna has NO motels. None. I was pretty sure I was sleeping in my car that night cuddled up to my furry dog. At this point we needed gas too. I always fill my tank before I head out on the dirt roads because I know what can happen. No real gas stations in Hanna but they do have a few pumps that take a credit card. That works, if only the pumps worked. No luck. So we decided to drive a few more miles to Interstate 80 because we figured that was our best option. Luckily the highway ramp wasn't closed and we decided to press our luck and try and get to Laramie which was about 70 miles away. Laramie was the only gas or lodging available. I had less than a quarter tank. Actually I-80 was the best driving conditions we saw but that really isn't saying much. Visibility was a little better though. We made it to Laramie, and gas, and we were again told that all roads out of Laramie were closed. Hundred of semis, cars and trucks sat at on-ramps around Laramie. We decided to call Wyoming Dep't of Transportation to see if Highway 287 was open. They said yes but probably not for long. We made it out of Laramie and got past the gates before they closed them. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or not, looking back. By now it was dark, very cold, and the wind was blowing like crazy. My buddy took the lead because he had the 4 wheel drive and better headlights. The snow was whipping around and making it really hard to see. When Regan thought things couldn’t get any worse, Skip comes running into the house, distraught that he’d just discovered Adele Hopkins, the woman renting the house next door, in a heap at the bottom of her staircase to the beach. Regan and Jack run back down with him, but huge waves are crashing on the shore. Hopkins is gone, presumably swept out to sea. Who was Adele Hopkins? No one knows. The sixty-ish loner, who moved in five months ago, shunned her neighbors. Even her landlords, friends of the Reillys, have no idea how to locate her next of kin. Discovered in her dining room are stacks of apology cards she’d not yet sent and bags of decorative pillows that are embroidered with the saying grudge me, grudge me not. Regan and Jack begin an investigation to help their friends track down Hopkins’s family. They start by interviewing two young women who own the shop where Adele had bought the pillows. Pippy and Ellen opened Pillow Talk after they both lost their jobs. When a newspaper article revealing the terrible way the women had been treated by their former employers was posted on the Internet, business took off, they started to become well-known, and the Pillow Talk website became a place for people who had had similar experiences to vent their feelings. Pippy and Ellen just received an anonymous e-mail from someone who spews venom about her former rowing coach—Adele Hopkins. Could she be the same Adele Hopkins? Regan and Jack’s search for clues to this mysterious woman’s identity makes for an anniversary weekend they’ll never forget!
