St. Michael the Archangel Church in Argao, Cebu viewed from the window of the clay-tiled Spanish era (1608) municipal hall which is still in use Argao became a parish in 1703, which prompted the construction of a beautiful rococo-baroque church structure in 1734 and was completed in 1788. A good number of religious artifacts have remained in the church. Dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, there are more than 20 figures of angels sculpted on its brass-studded portals. The altar (retablo) of the church is still the original. The church was renovated for its bicentennial celebration in 1988, and its outer walls were scraped. Despite some renovations and modernizations done to it, the San Miguel Archangel Parish still remains one of the richly furnished churches in southern Cebu. There is a convent that was used primarily as a seminary during the mid-1900s. This two-level structure is known to be one of the highly ornate churches in the island. Together with the convent and other older buildings in the area, it is a dominant structure in the town. Very prominent on its flat facade is the articulated carving of the parish patron saint. Oversized urn-like finials standing on a rectangular base on the corner of the church provides a decorative element. The church has unusual ceilings of canvass painted all over with religious motifs. On the ceiling are murals done by two of the best church muralists during that time (early 20th century). The first portion portraying biblical manifestations of angels was done by the famous artist Canuto Avila. The other portion by the altar was done by Reynaldo Francia and depicts the victory of St. Michael over Lucifer and his followers. This can be seen above the altar and is done in tinting color. Aside from the unique murals, Argao is also blessed with another treasure that is considered rare throughout the Philippines. The Church of Argao possesses one of the remaining 14 Spanish era pipe organs, and is one of the three towns in the whole Cebu province to still have this instrument. The pipe organ of Argao, though no longer usable, is estimated by many historians to have been built between the 17th to the 19th century. Organs built in this period were of typical Spanish Baroque style except for the ones built during the last part of the 19th century which are Neo Gothic in style. But all of them were constructed in the reliable Mechanical Action, also known as the Tracker Action. A great possibility is that Argawanons took a great part in building their pipe organ along with Spanish or Mexican Organ-builders. According to the study done by Mr. Hans Gerd Klais of Johannes Klais Orgelbau of Bonn, Germany, who published his research in one of the volumes of Acta Organologica, as late as 1977, the organ was still in good condition. Professional organ makers describe Argao’s organ as having “windchests” constructed from a massive solid wood. Channels were patiently carved out of the massive Narra wood. There are two windchest blocks connected by lead tubes to accommodate all the stops. It has some similarities with the casework of the pipe organ of San Agustin in Manila. Three round towers with the biggest in the middle. Three towers are separated with flat field of pipes. Also, it has white naturals and black sharps of ebony wood and toe pedals, and has a wedge bellow with 4 folds supplied by a 1 fold wedge pump bellow. Unfortunately, no records in the church exist to show who played the organ, though according to some residents, after the 2nd World War Mr. Juan Calledo played the instrument and a certain Noy Ino was tasked to pump the organ. Further research will shed more light to the matter. Source: Argao Tourism Council Drostdy The Swellendam Drostdy Building This is essentially a Cape Dutch building, except it no longer has the facade gable. The original Drostdy was a small T-shaped building with a front gable. Between 1812 and 1825 the Drostdy was extensively renovated and enlarged to almost twice its original size. The present plan of the building, based on an H-plan, is unusual in that the main entrance was not retained in the centre of the transverse wing, but moved to the middle section between the two wings when the building was enlarged. The Drostdy now looks as it did in 1844 and has a thatched roof which is merely raised in a gentle curve above the front door to allow the inclusion of a dormer window to light the loft. The Drostdy was built using clay and unbaked brick in earth mortar. In later additions stone, or a mixture of stone and soft-burnt brick, was used. This produced the thick walls, that were then plastered with clay or lime mortar and was regularly whitewashed. Nearly all the timber used in the construction of the building is yellow-wood. These trees grew abundantly in the indigenous forests in this district and Knysna. This wood is not a durable wood and it had to be protected with several layers of paint. The customary colour at the Cape and throughout the colonial world was dark green. An interesting feature of the Drostdy is the painted lime-plaster floor in the parlour, made to imitate tiles or marble. The interior walls were painted with a tinted lime wash. The wine-cellar was the last major addition made to the Drostdy while it was still an official building and is the only section with decorative plaster-work. The Drostdy was the most important building in the town for many years. Kitchen Kitsch this rooster stands over the oven... if you can believe it, it has a partner, and an accompanying hen garlic storer thingy, hen figurine, hen napkin holders and a hen and chicken fridge rug.. oh did i mention the barn yard emphasis on the chickens pen caddy by the phone?? (not mine OKAY... where I work there's a house mother and she's incharge of the interior decoration..) 6" Fish Tile is also painted in the Majolica style. I used the black and white border on these tiles when a customer requested them. In the installation they stand out nicely but they also look nice as individual accents, I think. 287 Broadway Building Civic Center, Manhattan Prominently situated on a comer site, the 287 Broadway Building is notable for its combination of the' ltalianate and French Second Empire styles as executed in cast iron, and one of the few surviving examples in New York City. Erected in 1871-72 for the estate of Stephen Storm, a prominent grocer ac'1d tobacco merchant, this bank and office The building was designed. by John B. Snook, one of the most prominent New York architects of the time. The prestige of the builcting was indicated both by the :ma.nsard roof and an early otis passenger elevator. The cast-iron facades on both Broadway and Reade Street feature large round-arched windows sepa.rated by Ionic columns at the second story and by corinthian above, each story crowned by a cornice. The high mansard roof, topped by lacy iron cresting, retains its original slate shingles and is pierced by dormers with segmental pediments and round-arched wWows. 'Ihis building graphically illustrates the transformation of lower Broadway in the 19th century fram a residential bou.levard into the city's commercial center The architectural treabnent of cast-iron facades went through several distinct phases before the material finally fell from favor towards the end of the century. 6 Early in its 19th-century commercial use cast iron was adopted by the architectural profession and began to reflect the Italianate style prevalent among commercial buildings .in the 1850s. A series of cast-iron "palazzill were prcduced, often painted white to imitate marble. In New York these included the cary Building (King & KellLnl1, 1856-57) at 105-107 Chambers street, and the Haughwout store (John Gaynor, 1856) at 488 Broadway, roth designated. New York city I..andrnarks. These buildings, as well as the majority of Italianate cast-iron buildings in New York, were used for mercantile purposes. In the late 1860s and early 1870s, cast-iron buildings began to be executed in the recently imported French Second Empire Style, with its most obvious feature the Ir6nsard roof. In addition to mercantile buildings, like the Lord & Taylor store (James H. Giles, 1869) at 901 Broadway, a designated New York City landmark, it also appeared in other prestigious buildings like hotels (the Gilsey House, 1200 Broadway, Stephen Decatur Hatch, 1869-71, a designated Ne'iil York City Landmark), insurance company buildings (New York Life, 346 Broadway, 1870, Griffith Thomas, demolished ), and office buildings such as 287 Broadway. The New Building application for 287 Broadway was filed in March of 1871, with James B. Snook as architect and the Estate of Stephen stonn as owner. construction began two months later. Snook's design as filed was for an ltalianate four-story building with a basement, with two cast-iron facades and brick side walls tenninating in a flat tin roof. The ironwork was by Jackson Burnett & Co. The application stated that the building was to be used for banking rooms and offices. 7 Shortly after, an a:me.ndment to the application changed the roof to mansard and added an otis elevator; both features enhanced the prestige of the building for its intended use.8 The plans for the building indicate an areaway on Broadway and Reade Street, with steps down from the street level to a side entrance, as well as steps to the Ir6in entrance on Broadway. 9 To the north of the stoop on the basement level (now the first story), the Broadway facade featured paired doors with single transoms capped by flattened arches. These arches continue on the Reade Street facade. Early tenants included the Union and Pacific Railroad Company (later the Union Pacific Railroad), and office supply concerns. Jackson, Burnet & Co., manufacturer of the ironwork for 287 Broadway, began as the G.R. Jackson Company, listed in 1840 as manufacturers of iron fasteners with a factory at 201 centre street. The finn later changed its name to George R. Jackson, Burrlet & Co. and opened a factory at 337 East 13th Street and Avenue c, manufacturing II iron buildings, wrought and castiron railings...roofsI and iron stairs." By the early 1870s the firm became the Excelsior Iron Works under the management of Jackson, B.lrnet & Co. It maintained the original factory at 201 Centre Street as a branch office. By the 1880s the finn name was changed to the Atlantic Iron Works under the management of Burnet & Co. Examples of iron-fronted buildings by the Atlantic Iron Works include 268 canal street (1886, lansing C. Holden) and 485 Broome street (1872, Elisha sniffen) in the Soho-cast Iron Historic District. By 1890 the firm was no longer in business. This six-story Italianate/Second Empire building, located on the southwest corner of Broadway and Reade streets, extends twenty-five and 1/2 feet along Broadway and ninety-six feet along Reade Street. COUNTRY ITALIAN DECOR : ITALIAN DECOR
COUNTRY ITALIAN DECOR : KIDS EASTER DECORATIONS Country Italian Decor
"the italian job" design seminar Carlo Colombo, a well known Italian architect said as part of his opening statement : " i think italian design is the best in the world. " Then the slide presentation went on about the the design work of the italian masters and on to their work portfolio. Funny.. I think design, as with any type of expression, is relative to point of view. What seems to best now in this context, may not be for other people in other culture, or in a different time period. Reaching out for human emotion and desire is one of the art/science in the high-end design. Many Italian designers are very good at that, so is japanese, so is some german, or any other countries. I would think the key to such emotional design depend on the observational skill to try and understand the ever changing human emotion and its relationship to material expression – then able to use that same sensitivity to apply into a new form to achieve the desired emotional message. Some people are good at it, some people are not. The standard of social acceptability of design expression in terms of emotional quality in some society is higher than others. If a person barely makes it to survive a design that serves the functional need is good enough. But now bangkokians are living better and people seek more delicate method to express their 'taste' in living. Italian design are sure to be here to serve such market. Italian design is very popular in the look and feel department. Design popularity is dependent on the media coverage, which also depends on society’s appreciation and demand. I would very certainly agreed that the infrastructures (technology + production industry), society(people + their value + interaction) and the culture (historically of how society was developed and passed on from the past to this generation) :: endorsing the value of design aesthetic and innovation (in terms of fame and fortune reward) is very strong in Italy and other European region, also in America and Japan. – boy that was a long compound sentence. In Thailand? Probably still a long way to go in altering the chino-asian-market oriented thinking.. "they did it good, lets copy, modify and make it cheaper" .. Innovation relationship to success isn't such a widespread beliefs amongst the industrial operators here. ..although...things are changing. The aesthetical and emotional(symbolic) demand are rising. There are more attention towards design oriented events. Oundel Mill Reflection Explore #218 Many thanks everyone !!! Happy Birthday, Mom 219/365 Saturday: My Mom's birthday was today. I stayed up til 2am last night baking a cake. I got up this morning & went into her room where we gave her presents. Mine haven't arrived yet (I ordered them online). We went to Llangollen to The Corn Mill for lunch. It's been raining so much lately that the river next to the restaurant was huge. Quite impressive really. I ordered from the "light bites" section of the menu, (macaroni cheese) 7 assumed it would be a small portion. It wasn't. So I didn't finish it because I just couldn't manage it, & then the lady clearing our plates asked me in an aggressive manner if there was something wrong with the food. That's just bad service. It really annoyed me. I'm not always entirely comfortable when we go somewhere really posh, but at least they don't comment on what you've eaten. We walked through the town next to this little antique shop my parents like, & then we headed to Eagles Meadow. I was innocently taking photos in the back of the car, & my Mom asked if she could look through my camera. I said yeah, cos it was no problem really, until she started going through some photos from the other night. There's nothing I want to hide, but I was specifically letting her look at the photos from today. I asked her to stop looking through them, & she refused. It was such a fucking breach of privacy. It turned into a row, of course. I always feel so stupid complaining about my privacy (which is something I really value) considering I write about my life on here. But I control this, in a way. It felt horrible someone going through my camera & not stopping. After the row between us had died down, we went shopping a little. My Mom wanted to go & see the film '2012', but I am totally against those end of the world films. Not for me. The only other film showing was A Christmas Carol in 3D, so I went for that. Hugh came with me. I spent like ?30 of my own money with him, but I wanted him to have a nice time. We were going to go home after the movie, & then my parents were going to go out for a meal, but they figured it was easier to go to Frankie & Benny's, so I had a lovely cannelloni there before going home, where we ate cake. Everyone agreed it was a fabulous cake. =) Sunday: I just watched TV today. Monday: I spent all day tidying my Dad’s study. It seriously took me that long. & my arms hurt sooo much. I stored all of my books from the last 2 years of school in his study at home, & I finally tidied them today (6 months after finishing my exams, 4 months after finishing school). & I JUST SAW THE COCA-COLD ADVERT. Which means it's officially Christmas. My brother & I had this debate a couple of days ago, & he said it couldn't be Christmas in December, but Christmas decorations in some local towns went up in October, so I beg to differ. Tuesday: I really don't remember what I did today. I went to my Spanish class though, & worked with the same couple I usually do. 220/365 Little white Lie !!!! Last Saturday night when I went to bed we had 6'' of snow on the ground. During the night it rained, Sunday morning all the snow was gone and I mean all of it. I made a comment that with all the rain in the forecast, there was no chance of a white Christmas. This morning at 5:00am I woke up to this, 20" of fresh snow. It is heavy with the water content at about 25%. All the school in our district were closed and a lot of guys couldn't get dug and get to work. We are use to a lot of snow, but anytime you get this much at one time it slows everything down. So I think now we may get our white Christmas. More snow expected tonight, I can't wait. My back is sore and I am running out of room to throw the snow. Wicker Arches, Sheffield The Wicker Arches form a 660-yard (600 m) long railway viaduct across the Don Valley in Sheffield. They take their name from the thoroughfare "The Wicker", which passes through the main arch of the viaduct and was, until the completion of the Sheffield Parkway, the main route eastwards from the city to the M1. The viaduct was built in 1848 to extend the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway from its previous terminus at Bridgehouses. They consist of 41 arches. The arch which crosses the Wicker provides 30 feet (9.1 m) of headroom and spans 72 feet (22 m). On either side are smaller arches around 12 feet (3.7 m) high, with heraldic decoration in the stonework above them. Many of the arches are now concealed by buildings. Later a part of the Great Central Railway, the viaduct supported Sheffield Victoria Station. Main Line rail passenger services crossing the Wicker Arches ceased in January 1970 with the closure of Sheffield Victoria and its service to Manchester, however the viaduct still carried the local services to Huddersfield via Penistone until they too were diverted, via Barnsley, in the 1980s. The only other passenger services to cross the bridge thereafter were football excursion trains to Wadsley Bridge for matches played at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground. This traffic ceased in 1996. The Victoria station buildings and platforms were demolished in 1989, however freight services continue to use the, now single, line across the viaduct to reach the Stocksbridge Steel works. The arches were restored in 1990 and are a Grade II* listed building. They were added to the Buildings at Risk Register in 2007. The central arch was hit by a bomb during WW2, but did not collapse and was repaired. The repair can still be seen today. as you pass under the central arch coming from the city centre, above you it is on the left hand side of the arch.
