Aerial View of Vilamoura (Marina) - Algarve (File:IMG 1987)
Vilamoura is in the municipality of Loule, in the Algarve, Portugal. Its boundaries lie within the parish of Quarteira. Vilamoura is a purpose built resort and Marina which was started from scratch by a wealthy banker from Porto, Cupertino de Miranda. The resort was started in 1974 and is still expanding outwards from the marine center. The resort is located 14.3 miles west along the coast from Faro and is 266 kilometers from Lisbon. The nearest airport is at Faro. Covering some 20 km? of land, it is one of Europe's largest tourist beach resorts.
The area previously hosted the annual Almond Blossom Cross Country competition between 1996 and 2003, and the same course was selected as the venue for the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
The Marina:
At the heart of Vilamoura is the marina which has the capacity to berth over 1,000 vessels. The marina is surrounded by large Hotels and Luxury holiday homes as well as a large casino and numerous restaurants and vibrant bars. At the far corner of the marina, it is possible to charter boats for big game fishing. There are also facilities for jet skiing and parascending. Close by there are also a number of sports clubs, a shooting range and many night clubs. Tourism in Vilamoura is extensive and well-developed, with many different resorts with ratings from 3 star to 5 star. This is a substantially higher average than the surrounding areas, which have ratings varying from 2 star to 4 star. As a consequence of being mostly privately owned, the town is very opulently designed. The town/marina has an extensive variety of activities which are usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends. Activities include touring the local caves along the coastline (which are nearer to Albufeira than they are to Vilamoura). This cave tour is usually done on tour boats. The area also has two companies which operate trains-on-wheels for travel between resorts.
For the avid historians there is a preserved Roman Site and Museum providing an insight to the area's past. Originally a Roman fishing town, the ruins include baths in which the mariners used to bathe.
Creative Chakra
“Svadhisthana (Sweetness)” -2009
(oil on canvas) 24"x24"
Through my interest in spirituality and sacred geometry I began to study the chakras of the body. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means, "wheel." Eastern philosophy believes that we have seven energy generators inside the body that spin like a wheel and determine our overall sense of self and health. If a chakra is producing too much energy we become excessive in certain aspects of our self. If a chakra is spinning with little energy than we become deficient in a certain aspect of our self. Our overall state of mind, health and everyday life is somehow affected by the "spinning" of the energy that is created inside of us. Each chakra has it's own color and vibration. Each of which is represented with a different color of the rainbow. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and finally violet. ROYGBIV!
The second chakra is located at the sacral plexus. The purpose of this chakra is to explore movement and connection through emotions and sexuality. Its color is orange. The second chakra embraces our right to feel. A well-balanced second chakra has a complex emotional structure that is grounded enough to be contained and open enough to be fluid and connected. The emotional depth to this chakra holds many prizes when properly balanced: compassion, creativity, true power, awareness and insight.
To create something unique and also functional I have incorporated crystals into the painting that are known to work with the second chakra and help bring balance to it. This idea has turned the artwork into a three-dimensional tool to bring beauty, balance and energy to the viewer! The crystals that I used for this painting are Bloodstone, Carnelian, Red Garnet, Red Jasper, Ruby and also Ruby in Zoisite.

Chevelle Wheel Bolt Pattern
- A series of holes drilled in axle flange face that correspond with a series of holes drilled in the brake drum or rotor that wheel studs press into to allow wheels to bolt to the unit.
- lug pattern / bolt circle / pcd is defined by the number of bolt holes and the distance measured from the center of one lug hole to the farthest lug hole accross from it. This is often measured in millimeters (25.4mm=1inch).
- the arrangement of the bolt holes on a wheel. A 4 bolt wheel with 100mm between opposite bolt holes would be written as 4/100. Some wheels have more than one bolt pattern on the same wheel to accomodate multiple fitments.

Iridescent blues and oranges of Atala Butterfly
The Atala butterfly is strange to photograph. The colored areas are vague at the margins so the color looks like it has been dusted on a bit carelessly. But look at its marvelous tones... deep velvety blue, bright sky blue and a brilliant red orange! It is very fast moving so getting a shot at all is always a thrill! Usually looks like a vibrant patch of astounding flying color and it's gone.
Interdependencies in nature once again. This marvelous creature owes its life to the Florida Coontie which was almost wiped out after being the money crop of the first Florida pioneers. Without the Coontie, this beauty will be gone.
The short, woody stem and rootstock of the Coontie grows almost completely underground and produces a terminal crown of stiff, evergreen, pinnate leaves up to 3 feet long. The brown, fleshy, erect, female or seed-bearing cones are pendent when mature. Coontie plants contain a natural toxin, which atala larvae accumulate in their bodies and use to repel birds. Without coontie, adult atalas have no place to lay eggs. No eggs means no new generations. .
Wild coonties’ demise began with starch: Long before Europeans arrived in Florida, Native Americans used coontie as a source of starch. Coontie, in fact, is a Seminole word that means “bread” or “white root” because the roots can be made into flour.
From "The Forgotten Frontier: Florida Through the Lens of Ralph Middleton Munroe" by Arva Moore Parks: 'Behind the hammock land the pine and palmetto country seemed to go on forever. Sending roots into the crevices of stone, the tall pine and its companions, the bushy palmetto and the fernlike comptie (Zamia), thrived in what seemed like solid rock. Althought not as glamorous as the hammock, the pineland was the backbone of the land. The heart of the pine became the foundation of the pioneer home; the palmetto, for thatch, became the roof; and the starch made from the root of the comptie filled the pionerer's stomach."
Cootie is sporadic in pinelands and hammocks throughout nearly all peninsular Florida and the Keys. In an effort to preserve the Atala, the coontie is being used increasingly in landscaping.
Arch Creek was an early Tequesta Indian settlement here in North Miami. Arch Creek is spanned by a natural limestone bridge. Early photographs of Miami show the bridge in all its beauty. Compromised now by encroaching housing and roadways.
The Tequesta Indians thrived in Arch Creek and the surrounding area. There was an oak hammock near the creek which provided shade as well as edible plants, nuts and berries. Biscayne Bay, less than a half mile away, was a prime food source for the Tequestas. There they caught shellfish, shark, manatee and turtle. North of the hammock were pine flatlands, which sheltered the all-important coontie plant (Zamia integrifolia), whose roots the Indians ground to make an edible starch product.
Tequesta habitation sites characteristically have midden areas or Indian garbage dumps. The gradual decomposition of refuse, including plant material and animal bones, produces a rich black soil. Many artifacts have been preserved in the soil, and archaeologists have uncovered many of them, such as bone points, shell tools and pottery shards. During their centuries of occupation (from c. 400 A.D. to c. 1200 A.D.), the Arch Creek Tequestas had what appears to be a fairly comfortable lifestyle, supported by the abundant natural resources at the site.
Around 1858 two ambitious pioneers used the creek and its natural bridge as a site for a coontie starch mill. These early entrepreneurs learned how to clean the poisonous roots and dammed up the waterway under the bridge diverting the flow through a sluice they carved out of a solid limestone bank. The water turned a wooden wheel attached to a nail-studded grinder, which mashed the cootie roots into a paste-like pulp. The resulting starch was then soaked and strained to remove any remaining poison. Laid out in wooden racks, the starch dried quickly and the sun bleached it white. In the early 1900s, several commercial factories in South Florida processed coontie roots for the manufacture of arrowroot biscuits. But coontie starch was not as successful as the pioneers thought, and the mill was abandoned several years later. The water sluice was filled in and paved over, and was not discovered until archaeologists excavated it in 1972.

New. Fragile. Weak. It flies to a new leaf, nectars and strengthens. Its egg was laid on a rare Coontie plant, an endangered species in Florida. It has enlarged in its cocoon and emerged. Rare. Rare. We hope it will thrive and mate as we work to plant more and more Coonties again!

SMART CAR ALLOY WHEELS. SMART CAR
Smart Car Alloy Wheels. Red Alloy Wheels.
Smart Car Alloy Wheels
- A term used to describe any non-steel road wheel. The most common alloy wheels are cast aluminum. Technically, an alloy is a mixture of two or more metals. These wheels are known for their light weight and strength.
- Alloy wheels (incorrectly known as rims) are automobile (car, motorcycle and truck) wheels which are made from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium (or sometimes a mixture of both). They are typically lighter for the same strength and provide better heat conduction and improved cosmetic appearance.
- (Alloy Wheel) Car wheels made of aluminium, rather than steel. Main advantages include lighter weight and attractive styling. Mostly chosen for style reasons.
- Smart , an automotive brand of Daimler AG, is a manufacturer of microcars produced in Hambach, France, and Boblingen, Germany. It is marketed as the "smart" in all lower-case, with the Smart brand logo, as of 2010, denoting a letter "c" for "compact" and an arrow for "forward thinking".
- The Smart Fortwo is a rear-engined two-seater microcar manufactured by Smart GmbH, introduced at the 1998 Paris Motor Show as the Smart City Coupe, and currently in its second generation.
- ("Smart Cars") This tag represents a whole variety of improvements to the basic car, from fuel regulation, auto-turnoff to navigational aids to proximity sensors to help avoid collisions, all made possible by computerization.

STACK RACING WHEELS : STACK RACING
Stack racing wheels : Folding luggage wheels.
Stack Racing Wheels
- (Racing wheel) A racing wheel is the preferred method of control for use in driving simulators. They are usually packaged with a large paddle styled as a steering wheel, along with a set of pedals for gas, brake, and sometimes clutch actuation, as well as various shifter controls.
- Fill or cover (a place or surface) with piles of things, typically neat ones
- Cause (an aircraft) to fly in circles while waiting for permission to land at an airport
- Arrange (a number of things) in a pile, typically a neat one
- an orderly pile
- arrange in stacks; "heap firewood around the fireplace"; "stack your books up on the shelves"
- load or cover with stacks; "stack a truck with boxes"
IRL Indy Racing League - Real Racin'
Winter is finally over and the real racing season begins this weekend at Homestead when the Indy Racing League takes the fastest show on wheels to the banked oval in South Florida. Some folks say rubbin' is racin' but I say it ain't - especially in the IRL. Just ask Kenny Brack. You won't find any better, closer, wheel to wheel excitement than at an IRL event. Get out and see for yourself. Television does not do justice to the awesome speed and competitiveness of this series.
And since we're racing at Homestead, that means the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway isn't far off. By the time the teams get to Indy, we should know pretty well who the title contenders are going to be, but you can bet Penske, Ganassi and Andretti-Green will be at the point of the field in every race. Now there are three women in the series as well so ladies grab your Danika gear and get to the racetrack. My personal favorite to win the season title is Sam Hornish Jr. of course but Marco Andretti will probably do it this year. He's fast and fearless and he needs a title before Honda will get him onto an F1 seat.
I was at the ethanol test at the Speedway last fall where this shot of Weldon in the south chute was taken and you will notice a distinctive sweet smell to the IRL exhaust this year as the series goes to 100% ethanol fuel. I used to say there's nothing better than the smell of methanol in the morning but now I will have to amend that.
As the commercial for Indiana Beach Amusement Park goes, "There's more than corn in Indiana." But nothing has ever smelled sweeter at the track.
Except maybe a stack of hot tires after a mid race pit stop. Go fast. Turn left. Bring it home safely.
Page fights to get back on a wheel while Adam Craig tries on behind Barry Wicks
The 8th annual Starcrossed Cyclocross race kicked off with rain for the elite men and women. French National Champion and ProTour rider Francis Mourey raced against a stacked peleton of American 'cross greats. Slick corners, big crowds, fast racing and sheets of rain kept the race dramatic from the gun to the bell.

STEEL WAGON WHEELS - WAGON WHEELS
Steel wagon wheels - Classic mag wheels - Weld racing motorcycle wheels.
Steel Wagon Wheels
- (wagon wheel) a wheel of a wagon
- Wagon Wheels are a snack food in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland which have a marshmallow centre and are covered in a chocolate flavoured coating. They are produced and distributed by Burton's Foods.
- Wagon Wheels is a 1934 remake of 1931's Fighting Caravans, using stock footage from the original and substituting a new cast headed by Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick to replace the earlier film's Gary Cooper and Lili Damita.
- Mentally prepare (oneself) to do or face something difficult
- an alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon; widely used in construction; mechanical properties can be varied over a wide range
- get ready for something difficult or unpleasant
- cover, plate, or edge with steel
Swanscombe cement works - disused wooden wagons
Superseded by more modern all-steel wagons, these old wooden wagons with inside bearings are clearly designed to tip sideways. Note the open-spoked wheels. The sprung buffers may have been a later modification as I'd have thought they would have had wooden dumb buffers originally. They might have been used for "uncallowing" (removing overburden) rather than carrying chalk.
The works railway was converted to standard gauge in 1928-30, and these wagons were possibly obtained second-hand, as they look older than that.
I'm not sure what the structure behind the wagons is - possibly a range of old fixed kilns converted for another use.
Penn Farm Wagon Wheel Fence
Black and White filtering of this shot of a steel wagon/tractor wheel setup against a fence looking into the forest. Next time I go here, I will do a close shot with only a portion of the wheel the help draw the eye and set the focal point for the viewer.
