Letter M Small-4
This is a vintage letter "M" from the old storefront signage of a bank. This small monogram initial would make ideal wall decor. In fact, what better way to personalize a room than to spell out your favorite word, your initials or even your name in metal letters. Use it to embellish your desk or bookshelf or hang it prominently on your wall. The possibilities are endless! The front of the letter is smooth, matte aluminum which is a charcoal grey color. The simple, modern type has serif detailing, adding an elegant flair to the fashionable capital "M". This piece could be easily mounted flush against a wall or background. This letter "M" measures 6" (15.2 cm) tall, 6.75" (17.1 cm) wide and 0.75" (1.9 cm) thick. "The Acid Tests were the epoch of the psychedelic style and practically everything that has gone into it. I don't mean merely that the Prankster's did it first, rather, that it all came straight out of the Acid Tests in a direct line leading to the Trips Festival of January 1966. That brought the whole thing full out in the open. "Mixed-Media" entertainment--this came straight out of the Acid Tests' combination of light and movie projections, strobes, tapes, rock 'n' roll, black light. "Acid rock"-- the sound of the Beatle's Sgt. Pepper Album and the high-vibrato electronic sounds of the Jefferson Airplane, the Mother's of Invention and many other groups--the mother's of it all were the Grateful Dead at the Acid Tests. The Dead were the audio counterpart of Roy Seburn's light projections. Owsley was responsible for some of this, indirectly. Owsley had snapped back from his great Freakout and started pouring money into the Grateful Dead and, thereby, the Tests. Maybe he figured the Tests were the wave of the future, whether he had freaked out or not. Maybe he thought "acid rock" was the sound of the future and he would become a kind of Brian Epstein for the Grateful Dead. I don't know. In any case, he started buying the Dead equipment such as no rock 'n' roll band ever had before, the Beatles included, all manner of tuners, amplifiers, receivers, loudspeakers, microphones, cartridges, tapes, theatre horns, booms, lights, turntables, instruments, mixers, muters, servile mesochroics, whatever was on the market. The sound went down through so many microphones and hooked through so many mixers and variable lags and blew up in so many amplifiers and roiled around in so many speakers and fed back down so many microphones, it came o
Ritz Theatre - Tampa (Ybor City), FL
The Ritz Theater opened in 1917 as the Rivoli Theater. The Rivoli Theater was built for plays which could be seen for 15 to 35 cents each. In the late 1930's and the theatre closed for renovations and expansion and reopened as the Ritz Theatre. The 700 seat auditorium once featured Mediterranean Revival style decor. The side and back walls of the auditorium featured little house fronts with red tile roofs, wrought iron balconies and chimneys. Each house window was backlit with a soft red glow. The rest of the interior was painted with patterns of orange, green, pink and red. The stage once featured beige curtains illuminated by red stage lights with a 35-foot wide CinemaScope screen within the proscenium.
The Ritz Theatre screened its last traditional movie on December 31, 1965. On January 1, 1966 the theater reopened its doors as the Ritz Adult Theater. The adult theatre removed the old theatre seats and replaced them with larger seats which reduced the theatres seating capacity to 400. The adult theatre operated for 15 years and featured triple X films and live nude stage shows.
In the 1970's a local stage production company called the Playmakers took control of the building. By 1982 the Playmakers closed the theatre and a private investor purchased the building. The new owner had plans to turn the theatre back into a first run movie theatre, however, a lack of funds and public support prevented him from doing so. After unsuccessfully promoting the theatre as a concert hall, the property went into foreclosure and the building sat vacant for awhile.
In 1988, the Capitano family purchased the building as an investment property and rented it out to the Masquerade Nightclub. The nightclub, which specialized in alternative rock concerts, removed the original house front decor and seating from the auditorium and leveled the floor. The nightclub was successful for many years but closed in 2006 after the Capitano family filed a lawsuit Feb. 22 alleging the club owed more than $90,000 in rent and other costs.
The Ritz Theatre came back to life on June 26, 2008 after being closed for nearly two years. The Capitano family invested $750,000 to renovate the building and transform it into a four-room event venue. Today the Ritz Theatre hosts weddings, concerts, galas and more.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the National Historic Landmark District in 1989.
Other notes: At some point in the 1970's there was a fire at the theatre. I'm not sure how much damage was done. This theatre was also once known as the Manchester, I'm just not sure when.

A view from up top.
The most famous landmark in the whole region is Palmela Castle.
The castle sits atop the highest hill in the area, at an altitude of 3937 ft (1200 metres) above sea level, at the edge of the Arrabida mountain range.
Situated with magnificent views on a spur of the Serra da Arrabida, Palmela Castle is one of the finest examples of Portuguese military architecture, although the castle itself doesn’t have any important architectural significance.
Neither does it have any strong legends. It does have some interesting history after it was captured from the Moors, however.
Between the 8th and 12th centuries the whole area was dominate by the Moors.
During its history the ownership of this castle passed through various hands as the Moors and Christian Kings fought for its strategic possession.
Afonso I or Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal , conquered the castle from the Moors with only sixty warriors.
It was lost again in the continual back-and-forth fighting but was permanently recovered by Sancho I, nicknamed “Sancho the Populator”, the second monarch of Portugal.
Later, in 1423, King Joao I, gave instructions for the castle to be altered into a monastery for the Order of Santiago. It remained so until the Order’s abolition in 1834.
Built in a strategic location, the Palmela Castle was a key point between the Sado and Tejo?s basin and was one of the parts of the defensive triangle of Lisbon.
The castle also had a high tower, bulwarks, the governor house and soldiers quarters, where the governor would stay during any war.
In its walls was born one of the most important pioneers of “Portuguese Africa”, Brito Capelo, who was an officer in the Portuguese Navy and a Portuguese explorer.
He helped chart territory between Angola and Mozambique in southern Central Africa that was unknown to Europeans in the 1870s and 1880s
In the castle also lived other significant people of Portugal’s history, like Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira, who was a Portuguese general of great success who had a decisive role in a 1383-1385 war that assured Portugal's independence from Spanish Castile. He later became a mystic, was beatified by Pope Benedict XV in 1918 and was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
Apparently the Bishop of Evora died a painful death, probably from poisoning, in the dungeon here, as punishment for his part in a conspiracy against the 15th century King Joao II.
Even though the castle was mostly ruined, it was classified as a National Monument on the 16th June 1919.
Partial restoration of the Castle took place in 1940.
Visitors enter the castle through the 14th century gate.
In 1979, after a fair amount of remodeling the convent was inaugurated as a one of 43 other “Pousadas” de Portugal.
The Pousadas are a chain of luxury, traditional or historical hotels in Portugal.
They were envisioned and created in the early 1940s by Government Minister Antonio Ferro, who was also a poet and playwright.
He had the idea of creating hotels that were both rustic and genuinely Portuguese.
Formerly run by the state, they are now run by a private concern, for the state.
With all its austerity, one can still enjoy its interior in a comfortable way, that still preserves a lot of the 17th century charm.
Through the cloister is the entrance to the galleries, the social space of the Pousada.
The Pousada has 23 double rooms and 5 Suites (2 with sea view, 1 with the city view, 1 with the castle view and 1 King size).
All the room are air-conditioned, have a phone, TV, and Internet connectivity.
Its original refectory is now the restaurant and there is a separate bar and swimming pool in the cloister.
The Restaurant’s Specialties include Stuffed crab, Dover sole in a beer marinade, Chicken pot stew and a Regional eggs pudding.
The Pousada is usually fully booked during the annual Grape Harvest Feast in the town below from the 3rd to 8th September every year.
The accommodations usually run 110 – 170 Euros per night although at certain times of the year you may find cheaper rates.
They even have a 2 Nights New Year’s Eve Package from 540 € total per Room / per couple.
The 15th Century Igresia du Santiago (Church of St. James) stands next to the Pousada. It dates back from the 2nd half of the 15th century.
It’s style is from the last phase of late Gothic. Its interior has three naves.
Under its manualine arches can be found the sepulcher, or tomb-chest (a cavernous rock-cut space for interment of the dead), of Jorge of Lencastre, Duke of Coimbra, the last master of the Order of Santiago.
There is also a wall decorated with 17th and 18th Century tiles. It is open for visitors twice a day, Tue – Sun, 10AM and 2PM.
Inside the castle walls, in earlier days, was the Church of Santa Maria.
It is very old and it fell into ruin a long time ago.
It was constructed as a renaissance church and was built on the site of an earlier Moorish Mosque probably dating back to the 12th centur
Religious and Mythical Symbolism in Blade Runner DSC 0067
Religious and Mythical Symbolism in Blade Runner
(idea) by Metacognizant Wed Oct 24 2001 at 20:21:08
Dr. Tyrell: I'm surprised you didn't come here sooner.
Roy: It's not an easy thing to meet your maker.
Blade Runner's Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) is in turns villainous, heroic, beatific, frightening and victimized.
This is not a result of disjointed filmmaking, rather it represents the film's construction of Roy Batty as an amalgamation of archetypes.
The film combines the Biblical figures of Lucifer, Adam and Jesus into one larger-than-life character, who must alternatively petition or confront his creator.
This creator is Dr. Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkell), who represents God, and provides the context within which Roy exists.
The film uses a large set of visual, sonic, and narrative techniques to draw the parallels that it does between its characters and Biblical figures.
Blade Runner opens with the following scrolling text:
Early in the 21st century THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced robot evolution into the NEXUS phase--a being virtually identical to a human--known as a replicant.
The NEXUS-6 replicants were superior in strength and agility, and at least equal in intelligence to the genetic engineers who created them.
Here a crucial word choice of "created" over the more neutral "made" brings up intimations of Dr. Eldon Tyrell's godhood. ("Engineers" is a plural noun, but in the same way that in Genesis 1:26 God says "Let us make man", the ultimate burden and glory of creation is solely Tyrell's.)
Dr. Tyrell has created Man, or at least the close simulacrum of Replicant, and he looms over his creations like he does over the miniature humanoid figures on his chessboard. According to Hannibal Chew (James Hong), Dr. Tyrell is omniscient; "He knows everything".
In fact, the owl in his chamber recalls Athena, the goddess of wisdom, whose favorite animal was traditionally the owl (Bulfinch, 1:1).
Most unequivocally, creation Roy calls Dr. Tyrell "the God of Biomechanics".
Dr. Tyrell's godlike status is reflected in Blade Runner's depiction of his place of work and residence, the Tyrell Corporation Building.
Very near the film's beginning, the camera films a low-angle shot approach to this edifice, which has a halo-like spotlight coming out of its roof.
The building's architectural design exaggerates the effect of this and other low angle shots by appearing to lean backwards towards the top of the frame. Its structure also bears a strong resemblance to that of a Mayan temple.
And in contrast with the film's typically dark and heavy color palette, the exterior of the building is usually suffused with golden light. Its interior is decorated with classical busts and columns, recalling Mt. Olympus, and pointing to the godhood of its sole resident.
As God- Dr. Tyrell- 's "prodigal son", who has "done questionable things", Roy confronts his creator in the Tyrell Corporation Building. In this sequence, Roy is portrayed as Evil personified, and is shot in close ups that emphasize his sweaty, smirking, and threatening visage.
In fact, Dr. Tyrell says that Roy has "burned so very, very brightly", drawing a direct comparison to Lucifer- literally "bringer of light". Roy compares himself to this fallen archangel when he misquotes William Blake's America: A Prophecy for Mr. Chew, "Fiery the angels fell, deep thunder roared around their shores, burning with the fires of Orc."
And throughout much of Roy's screentime in Blade Runner, he visually fits the part of the evil Lucifer. For instance, on both occasions that he walks, within the Bradbury Building, towards J.F. Sebastian (William Sanderson)'s apartment, he appears as a heavy, dark shadow, made nominally visible only by the slight back lighting outlining his arm and head.
And he wears a coat with the extremely high, turned-up collar associated with evil since its appearance on the supernaturally frightening film villain Nosfuratu.
But while Roy has an ominous "bad guy" side and stands in as Lucifer, his motivation, as it is clearly delineated, is not the fallen angle's greedy desire to assume ownership of Heaven and Earth.
Rather, he and the replicants he leads spend the course of the film trying to infiltrate the Tyrell Corporation Building in order to get Dr. Tyrell to lengthen their meager four-year life span. Like Adam, of whom God says "'Behold this man is become as one of us'...
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden" (Genesis 3:22-23), Roy is forbidden to approach Dr. Tyrell, or even to be on the Earth. In fact, the name for the police officers guarding the Earth against the replicants' return- Blade Runner- recalls the cherub with a "fiery sword" (3:24) that guarded the Garden of Eden against Adam.

Spare Room Navajo White with Mural
This is the spare room. We didn't paint over the existing cloud mural on the wall cuz I love it..the rest of the walls were painted in Navajo White..the two end book cases are from my old wall unit we had in the living room and the center one used to be in our bedroom..the actual center one that used to go with the end ones was to large to get upstairs..but was very nice with cabinet doors..the kind where you could put a TV..which we didn't use it for that anymore after we got our flat sreen one..So I moved that section to my shop and am going to use it there to store things. As you can see..I have a lot of stuff on the shelves..this is my room where I will still store things..as Jon as taken away any thing I use to have downstairs..we might eventually get a storage cabinet and put it in the upstairs hallway..I think we may need to.. since I have stuff sitting in boxes on the floor still..I want to clear this out in order to put a twin bed in here for when our granddaughter Calista comes to spend the night .. we have some time as she is still too young to sleep in a regular bed just yet. I made a little play area for her on the bottom shelves here in the middle section. You can't see it here but there is an alcove to the right and behind me when I was taking this shot..this is where my desk and pc is at. On the lefthand side is a dresser for Jon and he keeps his clothes in the closet of this room. I also have 3 huges rubbermaid containers with all my Hallmark Springbok Jigsaw Puzzles in them..I am saving these cuz Hallmark switched to some other company a few years ago..to make their puzzles. The Springbok ones are the very best ones ever made! You can put together and hold the puzzle up when you are done and the pieces stay interlocked..I have a few that I have framed over the years. Jon says no more hanging up puzzles though..Wants to just use my photos now. I do have Xmas ones that I will hang up every Xmas for decoration though. I need to see if the 3 big boxes might fit thru the crawl space opening to the attic area..but I think the boxes are too large..anyway before all this these puzzles were under my bed and in the closet , etc.. all over the place..I refused to part with them as they are collector items now..and I foresee me and Calista putting them together someday in the future too!

Grandma's Hands
Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her, she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat, I wondered if she was OK.
Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking, she said in a clear strong voice. I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK, I explained to her.
Have you ever looked at your hands she asked. I mean really looked at your hands?
I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.
Grandma smiled and related this story:
Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all of my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer.
They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my life. They wiped my tears when my husband went off to war. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold our newborn daughter.
Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote the letters home and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse. They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.
They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.
These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when He leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.
I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.
When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I thank grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.
In memory of my Grandmother <3

Your Brain at Work
Meet Emily and Paul, the parents of two young children. Emily is a newly promoted executive in a large corporation, while Paul has his own business as a consultant. Their lives, like all of ours, are filled with a bewildering blizzard of emails, phone calls, yet more emails, meetings, projects, proposals, and plans. For them, just staying ahead of the storm has become a seemingly insurmountable task. In this book, we travel inside the brains of Emily and Paul as they attempt to sort the vast quantities of information they're presented with and figure out how to prioritize, organize, and act on it. Fortunately for Emily and Paul—and for readers of Your Brain at Work—they're in good hands: David Rock knows how the brain works—and more specifically, how it works in a work setting. Your Brain at Work explores: Why your brains feels so taxed, and how to take full advantage of your mental resources Why it's so hard to focus, and how to better manage distractions How to maximize your chance of finding insights that can solve seemingly insurmountable problems How to keep your cool in any situation, so that you can make the best decisions possible How to collaborate with others more effectively Why providing feedback is so difficult, and how to make it easier How to effectively change other people's behavior Rock shows how it's possible not only to survive in today's overwhelming work environment but to succeed in it—and still feel energized at the end of the day, with a sense of accomplishment.

Hotel Martinique
The Tenderloin, New York City, New York, United States
The Hotel Martinique, a major work of the prominent designer Henry J. Hardenbergh, was constructed in three phases, in 1897-98, 1901-03, and 1909-11. Developer William R. H. Martin, who had invested heavily in real estate in this area of the city, built and expanded the hotel in response to the growth of entertainment, shopping, and transportation activities in this busy midtown section. Martin hired the distinguished architect Henry J. Hardenbergh, who had acquired a reputation for his luxury hotel designs, including the original Waldorf and Astoria Hotels, as well as the Plaza. In his hotel and apartment house designs, Hardenbergh created picturesque compositions based on Beaux-Arts precedents, giving special care to interior planning and appointments.
For the sixteen-story, French Renaissance-inspired style Hotel Martinique, the architect capitalized on the openness made possible by Greeley Square, to show off the building's boldly-scaled mansard roof, with its towers, and ornate dormers. The glazed brick, terra cotta, and limestone-clad structure also features rusticated stonework, balconies and prominent cartouches on all three of its main facades: Broadway, 32nd Street and 33rd Street. Despite having been created in three sections, the building maintains a harmonious street presence on all three facades.
Development of the Area
Near the end of the nineteenth century, the area of Broadway and West 34th Street, or Greeley Square, gained prominence as an important entertainment district. Just as different residential areas had their highs and !ows of popularity in the continuing northward migration of New Yorkers from the tip of Manhattan [stand, so too did quarters for shopping, business and amusements. New Yorkers first began to take a strong interest in the theater and related activities in the early 1850s, with the establishment of Niblo's Garden, near Prince Street and Broadway.
By the 1860s, the most fashionable playhouses and the Academy of Music were located near Union Square. The construction of Madison Square Garden edged New York's rialto up to 23rd Street, along with the fashionable shopping establishments of the Ladies Mile, with the accompanying hotels and restaurants which catered to those in this busy area. By the 1880s Broadway, between 23rd and 42nd Street became New York's glittering "Great White Way" (because of all the electric lights along this section of the street).
This section of Broadway and vicinity was soon lined with theaters and elegant department stores. Restaurants and luxurious hotels followed, serving the many visitors who flocked to this part of town. The Metropolitan Opera House, located at Broadway and 39th Street opened in 1883, and sparked a theatrical move uptown. The Casino Theater, the Manhattan Opera House, and Harrigan's (later the Herald Square Theater) were all soon located nearby. In 1893 the Empire Theatre opened at Broadway and West 41st Street, sparking further development in the area of Longacre Square (later called Times Square). Saks & Co, and R.H. Macy's anchored the shopping at 34th Street, having led the move, beginning in 1901-02, of department stores from below Madison Square. Restaurants such as Rector's and Delmonico's satisfied the gastronomical needs of New York's wealthy, while they stayed at such hotels as the Marlborough, the Normandie, or the Vendome.
To the east, Fifth Avenue had a different tone, set by the establishment of B. AMman's and the Gorham Silver Company, as well as the Knickerbocker Club. This was confirmed by the opening, in 1893 and 1897, of the lavish Waldorf and then the Astoria Hotels (both designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, architect of the Martinique) on Fifth Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets. One block to the west of Greeley Square, the planned Pennsylvania Station promised much future development. Sixth Avenue and 34th Street was also the site of cross-town streetcars, the Sixth Avenue Elevated, and the Hudson Tubes to New Jersey.
The Waldorf and Astoria Hotels proved to be exemplars of hotel design on the exterior as well. Not only did Hardenbergh follow his own design precedents in his later, influential hotel designs, but other architects (such as Clinton & Russell in the Hotel Astor) did as well. A. C. David, writing in 1905, proclaimed that the new, large hotels which were appearing in most cities in the United States were "in a different class architecturally from any similar buildings which have preceded them." This new type was large, a skyscraper (i.e. built with steel-frame construction), but nonetheless was created "in such a manner that it would be distinguished from the office-building and suggest some relation to domestic life."'^ To do this, David recommeded the use of warm materials, preferably brick, and a strong roof line with dormers rather than a cornice and flat roof.

It's up to a pair of trash-hauling heroes to clean up the city in this action-comedy starring real-life brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez. Garbage men James (Estevez) and Carl (Sheen) dream of opening a surf shop, but often land in hot water due to their practical jokes. When they discover the body of a murdered politician on their route, they attempt to sniff out the killer themselves a bad idea that rapidly ensnares them in a toxic waste scandal. Soon, they're thrown headlong into a manic escapade involving a deranged veteran, an attractive campaign manager, a kidnapped pizza deliveryman and a greedy polluter who wants them hauledoff to a landfill for good!
Proving that a little success can be a dangerous thing, Emilio Estevez parlayed his early-'80s "brat-pack" fame into a dubious directorial career, beginning with 1986's Wisdom (in which Estevez costarred with then-fiancee Demi Moore), and resuming with this sophomore-effort 1990 comedy that benefits most from Emilio's teaming with brother Charlie Sheen. (Close your eyes and listen: their voices sound like their dad Martin Sheen after inhaling helium.) The brothers play a pair of garbage collectors who discover a body on their daily rounds, and the corpse draws them into a scheme involving corrupt politics, illegal hazardous-waste dumping, and a lovely neighbor (Leslie Hope) with connections to the dead guy. Add a wacko Vietnam vet (Keith David), an unsuspecting pizza deliverer (Dean Cameron), and a pair of overzealous cops, and you've got a comedy that lazily rambles from one lightweight scene to another. It's way too loose to have any noteworthy quality, but that's also part of the movie's low-brow appeal: Estevez and Sheen play well together, and this is just their way of goofing off with Hollywood money. With a sharper script and an experienced director, Men at Work could have paid off handsomely. As it is, these sibling antics are amiable enough, and the early-'90s fashion crimes (like Charlie's "dork knob" ponytail) offer an amusing diversion from the lamest gags. --Jeff Shannon

Paris Living Rooms
Photographer Dominique Nabokov has documented the living rooms of well-known Parisians - artists, writers, designers, intellectuals, and the occasional celebrity. The rooms vary widely from one another in terms of formality and decor, but they are all equalized under the gaze of Nabokov's camera. Each room is shot simply as it happened to appear on that particular day, without any people. Using discontinued Polaroid Colorgraph type 691 film, (which provides a full-color transparency in four minutes), Nabokov does not use special lighting, or allow the rooms to be rearranged or touched by a stylist. The result is a series of fascinatingly deadpan photos that puts an ironic slant on the celebrity interior genre. These peeks into the living rooms of celebrated Parisians will provide hours of voyeuristic pleasure. The book includes more than seventy living rooms of such diverse Parisians as Jean-Paul Goude, Andree Putman, Christian Liaigre, Ingrid Caven, Jeanne Moreau, Victoire de Castellane, Loulou de la Falaise, and Jacques Grange, to name a few.

Waiting on the porch on Mother's Day 2007
Maggie and Beck waiting on the porch on Mother's Day 2007. Maggie's still here, as is Max (not pictured). Beck's now on a very large farm in upstate New York, and no longer has to defend the property from the foot, bike, and car traffic, the neighbor's kids, or the UPS and FedEx men.
A note added a couple of months after this was take:
In fact, as we discovered more and more each day we had Beck, the environment we have is too busy and stimulating for him and his pure-bred nature. In fact, the difference in the poses of the two dogs, the shelter dog mix on the left and pure-bred border collie on the right, is indicative.
He needed a large, rural farm where he would be happy putting his natural instincts to work, rather than Beck and us trying to restrain them when guests, neighbors, the post man, bicyclist, and others came onto our property.
Three months after we got him, we drove to the New York and returned him from the border collie rescue operation where we got him. It was a tough decision. He was a great dog to us in so many ways, but fortunately he's now on a real farm in upstate New York where everyone in the family is having a great time.
mother's day cake decorating ideas
Loving sons always do what their mothers tell them to...even if it's to kill. Directed by Charles Kaufman (brother of Troma President Lloyd Kaufman), the classic Mother’s Day delivers laughs and chills with liberal doses of nail-biting suspense. When three college buddies decide to rekindle their comraderie with a camping trip, they become the unwitting prey of a very dysfunctional family. As unforgettable as Deliverance, as terrifying as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a twisted statirical humor in the Kaufman vein, this Mother's Day will leave you feeling frightened and amazed!

Southwold Church, Suffolk - exterior
St Edmund's sits in the centre of Southwold on the Suffolk coast like an oasis of calm, surrounded by a large churchyard, rental for which is one rose, placed on the altar on St John the Baptist's Day (24th June) every year. A chapel built on this site around 1200 by Thetford and Wangford abbeys burned down in 1430. It was replaced by this magnificent Perpendicular church, built all at once over a relatively short period from 1430 to the 1460s, and so it has a pleasing architectural unity. It is also perfectly proportioned, with its length, height and width at a ratio of 3:2:1 (144 feet long, tower 100 feet high, and 56 feet wide).
The building materials were creamy, fine-grained limestone from Caen in Normandy, and local flint for the exterior decoration in different textures and patterns, known as 'flushwork'. Above the west window is an inscription in knapped flints, SAncT EDMUND ORA P. NOBIS ('Saint Edmund, pray for us'). The delicate fleche (or spirelet) on the roof was purely for decoration and never housed a bell.
The original medieval stained-glass was smashed by the Puritan iconoclast William 'Basher' Dowsing in 1644; the later Victorian stained-glass was blown out during the Second World War by a German bomb which landed nearby.
Inside, the ceiling is a convincing nineteenth-century restoration of the medieval original, with a flight of angels springing from the hammerbeam roof.
Another striking feature is the huge font cover. The baptismal water was only consecrated twice a year, and so lockable font covers were introduced for hygenic reasons, and also to prevent the holy water from being stolen, either for use as a good-luck charm sprinkled on crops or in pagan rituals. Font covers became increasingly more elaborate during the Middle Ages, and the one at Southwold looks for all the world like a child's crayon drawing of a spaceship, and which at twenty-four feet (7.3m) high is the tallest in any English parish church. This is a modern replacement, designed by F E Howard in 1935, for the original fifteenth-century font cover which was also destroyed by 'Basher' Dowsing; the carved figures in the niches round the font had been removed earlier, during Henry's VIII's split with the Roman Catholic Church.
The choir stalls have a good selection of misericords (wooden carvings underneath the tip-up seats) and carvings on the arm rests, including a man who from his gesture of pulling his mouth wide open must have a very bad case of toothache.
The rood screen, which stretches right across the church, dates from the late fifteenth century and is the finest in Suffolk. It is actually three separate screens, each with delicately carved and gilded wood tracery and painted figures in the panels below: the rood screen, across the chancel arch, depicts the Twelve Apostles; a parclose screen, across the north aisle, depicts angels; and a parclose screen across the south aisle depicts the prophets of the Old Testament, with such splendid names as Baruch, Hosea, Nahum and Ezekiel. Even though many of the figures have been defaced — literally in this instance, having had their faces obliterated by 'Basher' Dowsing — the Apostles are still recognisable from their apostolic emblems such as the keys for St Peter and the X-shaped cross for St Andrew. There are thirty-six figures in total, each beautifully depicted in what must have been vivid colours (if now a little faded), capturing their individual features and each fold of their garments. The gilt backgrounds retain much of their original gesso work (where plaster was mixed with animal glue and applied to wood to form a three-dimensional design, or allowed to dry and then carved into intricate patterns). The panel frames and every available wooden surface have been decorated with animals and birds or eyecatching abstract patterns.

"Villa Alba" a Victorian Italianate Mansion - Studley Park, Kew
“Villa Alba” is situated at the corner of Walmer Street and Nolan Avenue in Studley Park, in the exclusive inner Melbourne suburb of Kew.
In 1862, the daughter of wealthy squatter James McEvoy, Anna Maria McEvoy, married the general manager of Colonial Bank Australasia, William Greenlaw. As a wedding gift, James placed a trust for Anna Maria of “Studley Villa” a single storey Italianate villa amid grounds of about one third of a hectare on the corner of Walmer Street and Nolan Avenue. James himself lived at the larger Italianate mansion of “Studley House” which he had acquired in 1860. “Studley House” adjoinined the “Studley Villa” property.
In 1881, the Greenlaw family demolished the existing house whose name had changed from “Studley Villa” to” Villa Alba” in 1870.
Built in 1882 on the same site as the old villa, “Villa Alba” is two storeys with a single storey section at the rear. It has rendered masonry walls with ruled ashlar markings and a hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves and tall chimney stacks. There is a central front tower of three storeys with a balustraded top and flagpole. All the windows have arched tops and moulded surrounds and there is massive rendered quoining at the corners of the building and the projecting tower. The entrance is up steps to a central front porch located at the base of the tower and the main rooms are behind the faceted bay windows at either side. The single storey wing houses the service areas and is nestled into the hillside behind a retaining wall.
It is the interior of “Villa Alba” which is of particular significance as when the house was remodelled in 1883 William Greenlaw employed Melbourne's foremost firm of artistic house painters and decorators, the Paterson Brothers (Charles, James and Hugh), to paint lavish finishes using stencils, gilding and hand painting on both ground and first floors. In “Villa Alba” at least three main artists were employed and something like thirty different frieze patterns were used in the rooms. The painting schemes are both rich in tone with soft colours and delicate in detail with much use of stencilling rather than wallpapers. Much of the technique of painting used is very complex and included not only stencilling but also chalked pounce outlines with hand painting to merge colours. There are also large areas exhibiting freehand painting. There are a great variety of scenes with both stylised garlands, ribbons, festoons, ribbons and cherubs in the French style of art, as well as panoramic scenes of Sydney Harbour and Edinburgh, Scotland and references to Sir Walter Scott's novels. In the hall frieze, putti can be seen engaged in activities such as photography or cricket. The interior decoration includes ornamental pediments over the timber doors, ornate ceiling cornices, ceiling roses and tiled fireplaces with marble mantles. There is some use of parquet flooring. Complementary and luxurious furniture was also commissioned for “Villa Alba's” decoration.
William Greenlaw's penchant for luxury and speculation on the share market to finance his lifestyle finally exceeded his judgement and skill. In 1893 he was declared bankrupt. As “Villa Alba” was not in his name, the family’s occupation of the property was not initially affected by their reduced circumstances. Following her husband’s death in 1895 Anna Maria Greenlaw sold the contents of the house in a two-day sale in 1897 and leased the house. In 1913, Melbourne businessman Samuel Fripp and his family moved in as Anna Maria’s tenants and remained so until her death in 1918. The house remained in the Greenlaw family’s ownership until 1933 when it became the property of Samuel Fripp. When Samuel died in 1936, his sons retained ownership of the house until 1949. “Villa Alba” was finally purchased by the Royal Women's Hospital in 1949 and the Henry Pride Centre of the hospital was built on “Villa Alba's” beautiful gardens along Nolan Avenue.
Most of “Villa Alba’s” original outbuildings and almost the entire original garden have been destroyed through development of hospital buildings crowding the main house. At first the villa was used as a nurses' home but was evacuated when cracks appeared in the walls during the building of a new nurses' home adjacent to it. “Villa Alba” was used for several years as accommodation for the caretaker of the Henry Pride hospital.
In 1984 the Kew Council, with the support of Mount Royal Hospital, the owners of “Villa Alba”, established a preservation committee. The following year, the hospital granted a twenty-five year lease to the Kew Council (later the Boroondara Council) for the historic house and some land. By 1996 the committee had resolved to establish a museum and resource centre of Nineteenth Century interior decoration at “Villa Alba”. In 1999 after passing through the hands of several hospitals, “Villa Alba” was sold by the St Georges and Inner Eastern Healthcare Network to the Society of Jesus for the use of Xa
A Large Late Victorian Villa with Queen Anne Influences - Essendon
Standing proudly behind its white picket fence with a wrought-iron gate, this large Victorian villa is situated in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Essendon.
Built just before the turn of the Twentieth Century, this is a Victorian style villa with residentail Queen Anne influences. Built of red brick this villa is double fronted with a central front door and a verandah featuring wrought-iron lacework decoration. All of these features are typical of the Victorian period. Its original slate roof is also very Victorian. Yet the Queen Anne style is starting to appear by way of the terracotta capping along the top of the roof and the decorative chimney pots.
Queen Anne was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look.
Essendon was etablished in the 1860s and became an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. A large villa like this built in one of the finer pockets of the suburb suggests that it was built for an aspiring middle-class family. This villa would have required one of two live-in maids to help its mistress keep maintained.
