De ijsvogel (Alcedo atthis) is een waterminnende vogel uit de familie ijsvogels (Alcedinidae). Het is een opvallende verschijning door zijn afstekende blauwe en oranje kleuren, maar ook een zeer schuwe soort die zich weinig laat zien. Alcedo atthis is een van de weinige soorten ijsvogels die tot in noordelijk Europa voorkomt inclusief Nederland en Belgie, althans de ondersoort Alcedo atthis ispida. De meeste ijsvogels leven in de tropen.
De ijsvogel is een typische viseter (piscivoor), dus sterk aan water gebonden. Zijn voorkeur gaat uit naar stromende wateren. In het grootste deel van het verspreidingsgebied is de soort algemeen, maar in sommige gebieden wordt de ijsvogel met uitsterven bedreigd.
De ijsvogel is een kleine vogel met een korte staart en pootjes, een korte nek, korte, afgeronde vleugels, een grote kop met grote ogen en een lange, dolkvormige snavel, geschikt om vissen mee te vangen en vast te houden. De poten zijn syndactiel; de voortenen zijn gedeeltelijk aan de basis met elkaar vergroeid. IJsvogels hebben een vrij uniforme, gedrongen bouw met een rechte, dolkachtige snavel. De kleuren verschillen wel sterk, sommige soorten hebben blauwe of rode kleuren, andere zijn zwart met wit van kleur. De ijsvogel heeft echter een overwegend blauwe kleur, waarbij de veren van de kop en vleugels iriserend blauwgroen zijn maar op het midden van de rug lichter tot kobaltblauw. De staartveren zijn echter weer wat donkerder. De veren aan de borst en buikzijde zijn warm oranje gekleurd en steken hiermee duidelijk af. Van de snavel tot achter het oog is op de wang een oranje oogstreep aanwezig, die abrupt overgaat in een heldere witte streep, ook de keel van de ijsvogel is wit. De poten zijn oranje tot rood van kleur. De mannetjes zijn enkel van de vrouwtjes te onderscheiden aan de kleur van de basis van de ondersnavel, die bij het vrouwtje dofrood is en bij het mannetje net zo zwart als de bovensnavel. Juvenielen onderscheiden zich van volwassen exemplaren door het valere verenkleed met donkergrijs gerande borstveren, gevlekte kruin, lichtere snavelpunt en donkerbruine poten.
De lichaamslengte bedraagt ongeveer 16 tot 20 cm, de spanwijdte is 24 tot 26 cm en het lichaamsgewicht loopt uiteen van 34 tot 44 gram.
De ijsvogel is in noordelijk Europa onmiskenbaar door zijn tekening, soorten uit andere werelddelen kunnen echter sprekend op de ijsvogel lijken.
Het geluid van de ijsvogel is divers; er kunnen diverse kwetterende schelle, kwelende en fluitende geluiden worden geproduceerd . Het mannetje lokt het vrouwtje met een hoge, fluitende 'tjieieiet' of 'tieietuu', die hij vaak tijdens de vlucht laat horen. Bij opwinding worden korte, herhaalde 'titi-titi' geluiden geproduceerd.
De ijsvogel heeft een snelle, rechte vlucht, vaak vlak langs het wateroppervlak. Hij kan op deze manier snelheden bereiken van maximaal 80 km per uur. De vleugelslag is snorrend, afgewisseld met een korte glijperiode. Hierdoor is er van een ijsvogel in vlucht zelden meer te zien dan een blauw-oranje flits.
Het waterdichte en isolerende verenkleed van de ijsvogel bestaat uit korte, dichte veren die tot zes keer per dag gepoetst en gekamd worden. Dit kan per keer 15 tot 20 minuten duren. De ijsvogel kent een voor vogels unieke poetsbeweging: hij wrijft over zijn kruin met de binnenkant van zijn vleugel. Ook neemt de ijsvogel regelmatig een bad. Vooral ouderdieren baden aan het einde van de periode waarin de jongen in de nestkamer worden gevoerd. Het nest is rond die tijd bevuild met een laag braakballen. Tijdens het baden duikt de ijsvogel onder water, alsof hij aan het vissen is, om enige seconden in het water te blijven of gelijk weer het water te verlaten en opnieuw te duiken. Dit wordt vervolgens zo'n twintig keer herhaald.
Sociaal gedrag
De ijsvogel leeft voornamelijk solitair, in het broedseizoen in paarverband. Een paartje heeft een eigen territorium, dat honderd meter tot een kilometer van een rivieroever kan beslaan. Het paartje is zeer territoriaal in de broedtijd en tolereert geen andere ijsvogels. Een indringer wordt over het water achtervolgd, waarbij de ijsvogel harde kreten slaakt. Soms monden deze aanvallen uit in gevechten, waarbij de ijsvogels elkaar bij de snavels beetpakken en in het water vallen. Deze gevechten duren meestal maar kort, maar in Zweden is waargenomen dat een gevecht acht uur lang kan duren.[8] Ook kleine zangvogels worden weggejaagd.
's Winters heeft de ijsvogel soms een groter territorium, dat wel vijf kilometer kan beslaan. Het mannetje en vrouwtje leven in deze periode gescheiden van elkaar en zij bewonen allebei een deel van het territorium. Dit verdedigen zij ook, zelfs tegen elkaar, maar minder fanatiek dan tegen vreemde soortgenoten in het broedseizoen. Adventureland Entrance
Adventureland is hard to describe. It's part jungle, part tropical island and there's a desert oasis thrown in as well.
From Main Street, you enter Adventureland by crossing a wooden planked bridge. One thing you notice about this section, the walkways where you first enter tend to be narrow and congested. It's easy to overlook the authentic landscaping as you're kept busy avoiding strollers and other guests.
You'll probably walk right by the "Swiss Family Treehouse." (That's not necessarily a bad thing.)
Fortunately, Adventureland has two of the Magic Kingdom's most popular attractions; the "Jungle Cruise" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." This makes up for that treehouse and the "Enchanted Tiki Room." There's also "The Magic Carpets of Aladdin" which is basically Dumbo turned into a flying rug.
Adventureland does have some of the better shops. If you have a teen, this is where you'll find popular clothing brands. If you need a tropical shirt (and who doesn't?) you'll find what you're looking for at one of the open air shops. If you need a Johnny Depp fix, anything and everything that's Pirates of the Caribbean themed is sold here.
Speaking of Jack Sparrow, there's a fun Pirate Tutorial that takes place throughout the day. Other characters often found in Adventureland are Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, Rafik, Timon and Goofy. (Check the day's schedule.)
Arguably one of the best features at Adventureland is the Aloha Isle. This is one of the only spots in all of WDW where you can purchase the very popular Dole Whip soft serve pineapple flavored ice cream (the other is in the Polynesian Resort). Be warned, this stuff is addictive. Other refreshing fruit flavored treats are on the menu at the Sunshine Tree Terrace.
As you can see, Adventureland is sort of a mishmash of themes. You can climb a tree, fly over the desert, explore the jungle, sail on the high seas and visit a tropical island where birds talk and sing. No matter which adventure you choose, it's a fun area to visit.
