I was at home and it was snowing one day. I looked out the window and saw the orange terra cotta flower pot sitting in front of the snow covered trees and thought "Darn! That's mighty cool looking!" So I took a picture of it :-D

After taking this picture I can tell they need to be dusted.
My wife (and kids) are pretty crafty. We made a bunch of these "button flowers" a few years back and they add some personality to an otherwise ordinary window sill in our kitchen. All you need to make them is some wire and buttons. It's an easy, fun and inexpensive project for the kids.

Another World, Another Place, Another Time
I really like the blurred look on this. I think it brings attention to the color.
Saturday morning I went out and bought Timothy Treadwell's Among Grizzlies...it was a pretty amazing read. I've been really interested in him for about 3 years now, but unfortunately it's one of those interests that I forget about unless I'm reminded. So I started seeing previews on TV for unreleased footage coming to Animal Planet in an 8 part series and TOTALLY re-immersed myself in all of it. As interested as I was in the past, I mainly kept it to watching the documentary EVERY time it was on and reading online, so this time I went out and bought his book.
He's always inspired me, but I've never been able to put my finger on exactly why. I certainly don't view him as stupid, or ignorant, but I don't see him as he saw himself- as the 'protector of the bears'...but I think I figured out why I'm so interested in his stuff.
He forces you to ask hard questions about the world, about wildlife and humanity...and about yourself. A couple of times in the book he talked about how amazing it was to just get out in wildlife and be surrounded by simplicity. Nothing was fake out there...there wasn't time for a show- it was about survival. It makes you question the way you live, the decisions you make...what you view as important. The way we live...it all seems so unnatural. How did we get here? Why did we get here? Why did we think we needed air conditioning and bottled water? Wildlife has gone thousands upon thousands of years living basically the same way they always have...yet humans...nothing is ever good enough. It would be beautiful if we were always striving to better ourselves, but I don't think that's it. I don't think our changes have always been about bettering the human race.
Anyways...I don't know. I think it will take me a while to really get down to what it stirred up in me. For whatever reason the story has always really resonated with me...but I imagine it does with everyone. Who hasn't dreamed endless dreams of going out to the wilderness and trying out that lifestyle. That's nature. That's the world. Why WOULDN'T we want to do that? We're all connected to that lifestyle somewhere deep deep down...but he actually went out and did it. Now granted, I don't think it's natural to make friends with bears and give them names, but...I think he had the basic idea.
After a near death experience he stripped away every external influence and went into the wild to find himself. Is there anything more beautiful, more natural, than that?
Check out the Grizzly Man Diaries on Animal Planet Aug. 29 @ 9:00pm. A lot of people demonize this man, or say that he 'got what he had coming to him'...but while he might not have had it all right...I don't think he got it all wrong either. He was on to something. I think we would be horribly misguided to take his life and try to recreate it 100%, but...I think he gave the world a lot to think about.
Day 10 - Ten Days To Go!
I brought my cheery flowers to work, to add a little colour to my office. I have two name label things which will need updating in 10 days ;)
So many things happened today...
We went to a photobooth before work to get our photos taken for our visas.
I picked up our wedding programs!! Though, there was a bit of a hiccup. I got to the post office in good time, then the lady came back saying that they couldn't find the parcel. :/ I called Tim asking what our designers last name was. And as it turns out the box was sorted under her name! *shakes head slowly*. They do look awesome though! Exactly the same as the images she sent us online :) Go Etsy!
We also bought Tim's shoes today, which was a lot harder than I thought it would be! But he looks very smart in them, if I do say so myself.
Lastly, our celebrant got back to us and likes our additions for the ceremony :) Just need to do the final touch ups and our ceremony is complete!
Very tired and a little pooped. At least ony three days of work left. Not too long now at all eee how exciting :>

This is a strange one! The tree is very large and tall but the flowers all hang from stems 10 feet or so from the ground so it feels like they are growing on a vine attached to the tree rather than the tree itself! These are called cauliflorous... flowers that grow from the trunk.

The Cannonball tree’s beautifully complex and fragrant flowers resemble huge orchids. At night the flowers become particularly pungent in order to attract swift-flying pollinators. This particular Cannonball tree was collected in 1913 at Jamaica’s Hope Gardens and has flourished at Fairchild since it was planted here in 1938."
Couroupita guianensis, whose common names include Ayahuma and the Cannonball Tree, is an evergreen tree allied to the Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa), and is native to tropical northern South America and to the southern Caribbean. In India it has been growing for the past two or three thousand years at least, as attested by textual records; hence it is possible that it is native to India also. It's part of the family Lecythidaceae and grows up to 25m (82ft) in height. The "Cannonball Tree" is so called because of its brown cannon-ball-like fruits. The majority of these trees outside their natural environment have been planted as a botanical curiosity, as they grow very large, distinctive flowers. Its flowers are orange, scarlet and pink in color, and form large bunches measuring up to 3m in length. They produce large spherical and woody fruits ranging from 15 to 24cm in diameter, containing up to 200 or 300 seeds apiece.
Cannonball Tree flowers do not have nectar, so these flowers are mainly visited by bees in search of pollen. Outside the native range of habitat, carpenter bees are considered to be the principal pollinators. Both the fruit and the flower grow from stalks which sprout from the trunk of the tree. Cannonball Tree flowers are found on thick tangled extrusions that grow on the trunk of the tree; these are found just below the foliage branches. The extrusions however, can range from two to six feet in length. The flowers are attached to an upwardly bent, white fleshy disk. The flowers have six petals, which are large, orange-red, and strongly perfumed. In pollination, fertile stamens can be found in a ring around reduced style and stamens. The sterile pollen is located in the anthers. As a bee enters to pollinate the flower, its back rubs against the ring with fertile pollen; this allows the bee to carry the fertile pollen to another flower. the hood pollen is sterile. The differences in pollen was noticed by French botanist Antoine Porteau in 1825.

Finally the weather is warming and our tropical trees are responding! Up North, it was crocuses, Tulips and Daffodils that signaled Spring for me. But here in tropical South Florida, it's Mangoes in bloom, setting up the delicious expectation of lots of peachy, golden, juicy fruit on its way!
Mangoes have been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years and reached East Asia between the 5th-4th century BC. By the 10th century AD, cultivation had begun in East Africa, coming later to Brazil, West Indies and Mexico. Mango is now cultivated in most frost-free tropical and warmer subtropical climates; nearly half of the world's mangoes are cultivated in India alone.
The flowers are produced in terminal panicles 10–40 cm (3.9–16 in) long; each flower is small and white with five petals and has a mild sweet odor like lily of the valley. The fruit takes three to six months to ripen.
Mango is generally sweet, although its taste and texture varies. Some have a soft, pulpy texture like an over-ripe plum. Others are firm like cantaloupe or avocado. Some are smooth. Others are fibrous. Mango is eaten ripe and raw.
Mango peel contains Urushiol, the chemical in poison ivy and poison sumac which can cause contact dermatitis in susceptible people.

Fading Memory of Summer

Already, the change in seasons has witnessed the fading of summer’s brilliant colors. Not too long ago, this milkweed was cloaked in majestic purple blossoms. From all around, monarch butterflies fluttered to its blossoms and delighted in its nectar.
Now, as summer’s long, warm days continue to yield to lengthening nights and falling temperatures, its royal color is gone. In coming weeks, in the wake of a still, crystal clear night, the season’s first frost will glisten like diamonds on grass, fallen leaves, and low-lying plants.
In coming weeks, the trees will carry out their annual fireworks extravaganza in dazzling hues of yellows, oranges, reds, and browns. Around that time, a temporary spell of Indian summer weather may seemingly turn back the clock on the changing seasons. Its warm breezes could rekindle summer’s fondest memories and give rise to hopes that the coming winter could be a gentle one.
Hopes and memories aside, beyond the trees’ explosion of color, winter will loom. While one will still be able to recall the summer in vivid detail—the things one did, the places one went, the people one met--one may also experience a sense of excitement about what the approaching winter might bring. Perhaps, it might be the kind of “old fashioned” winter of lore where the cold was persistent and often severe and the snow lay deep for long stretches of time. Perhaps its highlight will be a great snowstorm that will block the streets with mountainous drifts piled high by an icy wind. Of one such storm in the early 19th century, Amherst, New Hampshire’s “Farmers’ Cabinet” wrote:
“It is cheering to see the towering bank in a sunny morning, gemmed like the crown of a monarch, with jewels that receive their splendor from the sun’s rays, and reflect them back to ornament the cold white hillock, which the clouds have bestowed upon us to awaken recollections dear, and sensations as cutting as the winter.”
But that is getting too far ahead. For now, the faded milkweed is a reminder that sunny summer brought warmth and much beauty to the landscape. Summer provided the gift of opportunity for people to build wonderful memories. May the memories of the most recent summer be cherished.
