New Toy - Canon Ixus 750 - From Back, Main Mode Dial

Things went a bit wrong with my shiny new Casio EXILIM EX-Z750. It just locked up and stopped working. Returned it to the shop (John Lewis in Nottingham, UK), and they sent it away to Casio for repair. Casio decided that it was due to "impact damage" (it wasn't), and the repair would be chargeable. After a long argument, the store agreed to cover the cost of the repair, but I have no trust in Casio honouring their warranty, and the shop made it pretty clear that they certainly wouldn't be letting me get away with anything like this again.

I decided to replace the Casio, and sell it when I get it repaired. I want a camera I trust, so I just did what I should have done in the first place - bought a Canon.

The Ixus 750 (PowerShot SD550 in the US) is small, solidly built, 7 megapixel, 3x zoom, and very, very fast. I was amazed at the speed of the Casio, but this is even better.

Canon-Ixus--70-V-Sigma-DP1

Now bearing in mind I'm not comparing like with like I want to show the difference between what I'm getting from these 2 cameras, on the left is the Canon Ixus 70 and on the right the Sigma DP1. The Canon is unmodified at focal length of 17.4mm and the Sigma fitted with a Ricoh DW-6 .79x converter which I think works out at something like 28mm equivalent.

Despite the much smaller CCD size on the Canon I think I'm getting sharper shots and I'm certainly getting more pixels with a faster shoot-write-shoot cycle with it.

The advantage of the lager sensor on the DP1 seems to be something that doesn't cope too well with fast shutter speeds at a small aperture which makes it an excellent camera to use ..on the ground. In looking for a KAP camera I had hoped the DP1 sensor would have some advantages but now I'm not so sure. The wide angle view is definitely a big help in getting coverage but this seems to be at a price of 'softer' definition.

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone else's images this week. So far I like what I've seen and it looks like I'm not the only one who has an eye for architecture.
This image is from a freelance shoot I did for the University. As luck would have it, I was asked to document their event spaces for their website. They did not want me to bring in any lights. Although, they said I could use a hotshoe flash if necessary. They figured I would spend 5 minutes per room; I spent 15 minutes per room shooting from every angle imaginable. This image is one of my favorites.
The only postprocessing of the image was a slight straightening and I dialed down the exposure by about 1/3 of a stop.

...well, we can't go shooting around Lake Artemesia forever ;)

Time to start to look at some of my older subframe shots using some new post-processing techniques, especially now that some of hte cameras & lenses that I used to take them can truly be had for, well, "a few bags of peanuts" on eBay. It is not hard to see why they, "subframes" that is, are so popular despite their technical flaws. What is wrong with an A200 if you're going to take most if not all of your shots ISO100-200? At those ISOs they undoubtedly produce cleaner, more-detailed raw shots than a point & shoot of comparable resolution even if the p&s is shot at ISO80. The one trick is keeping them at ISO100-200 while shooting at F8 handheld, which is the dirty little secret of subframes (and fullframes) relative to point & shoots. With a G12 I could take this at F2.8, at most F4, and it would probably look just as sharp across the frame. And no need to underexpose it by a stop, either. So in good light, where the G9 had adequate focal-length range, it was just as good if not better than the A200 It was only when it got dark (at 28mm effective, ISO800 F4) or I had to take a long shot (200-375mm effective) that the A200/Tamron 18-250 combo really had an advantage over the G9. But those advantages were not nearly as great as the disadvantage in price, size & weight. And the ability to just keep the G9 in my pocket.

Still they were there, and they were real, and I definitely got some shots in Kiev with the A200/Tamron 18-250 that I could not have gotten with the G9, or even with a G11/G12. I would hate to compare it against a G11/G12 though.

I know one thing, I would love to have taken my shots in Istanbul with either camera shot raw vs a 400D & Sigma 18-200DC OS shot jpeg. even if I had just run them through Bibble 4.0 they would have come out better than the garbage that I got out of that camera & lens shooting jpeg. That is probably the one great mistake of my photographic life that I truly regret, going over there not once but twice and shooting jpegs from that utter piece of crap 400D at ISO400+, and saving the jpegs in medium-size "HQ" on top of that. I had no idea how much I was screwing-up in doing that.

Of course it's not like I've actually gone over there a third time with an a200 & Tamron 18-250 shooting raw and gotten significantly-better shots, but still. It would be nice to *have* raw shots from Istanbul. If you're going to screw up taking shots on a trip, at least screw up in raw :)

The problem is that you're still talking at least $200 for the body (like an A200) and another $200 for a compatible superzoom (like the Tamron 18-250). And those would be great eBay prices. This is why if we're going to talk about "flawed gear", a crappy p&s that has a similar 28-300mm effective focal-length range, is also 12MP and that also is going to be shot only at ISO80...well, that can't really be ignored for B does not mean that B > A. The existence of B does not mean that A had to exist before it. What I want is to get close to B without the complexities and cost of A. I don't want to have to spend $1500 and shoot at F8+ to get a shot like this. I don't think that anyone does.

And I would like to say that about any shot in my stream.

Furthermore I don't even want to have to spend ***$500*** to get a shot like this. Or have to shoot it at F8. It's nice to be able to shoot at F8 and still get good shots, but to *need* to do that to get sharp shots across the frame is a problem.

However

An A200 & Sony 18-70 is maybe $350 at most on eBay now.
A 450D & a 18-55 EF-S IS has to be in the same ballpark, a D5000 & 18-105VR likewise. But they still have to be shot at F8 for good sharpness across the frame and now you're talking about a $100 lens that's only 150mm effective at the long end. And this is the problem with subframes and especially fullframes: you end up with a camera that's just too much gear, and for most of them, just too good, for most of the shots that you want to take in good light but still not really good enough for most of the shots that you want to take in *bad* light especially with the average superzoom shooting handheld. They are either too hot or too cold. And without a doubt it's big, heavy, bulky and expensive, at least compared to a point & shoot. Even the D3100 is not all that much smaller than my N80 or 500si and that thing is freaking *tiny* for a DSLR. It still will not fit in your pocket with a decent IS zoom mounted on it, ergo it needs a strap or a bag, period. So it's either too hot or too cold and yet it requires constant attention, like a clingy girlfriend. I say that if it's going to be clingy, then it has to be smoking-hot even if that means it's expensive; but if it's neither expensive nor clingy then that's not all that bad as long

Did not have a clear mission on what i wanted to achieve with this. I was playing around with GIMP to see what my options were.
The picture is shot in RAW. That gives me a wider choice of options than if shot in jpg. Top shot is the original and straight out of the camera. The bottom one I fine-tuned the white balance by turning down red and green in the background. I simply opened up both pictures as layers on a new sheet. Moved both pictures into place and then gave it a 15% black Gaussian blur frame.

This was my Father's Day present last Sunday - much to my surprise :-). I have had a couple of tripods over the years. While the main one was a pan/tilt head one, it had no attachment which allowed the camera to simply click on or off. This one does and it is so simple to use. Even has a spirit level, which my others lacked.

View Camera in Portsmouth NH

In Portsmouth, NH, I came across this camera sitting in a field in or near the Strawberry Banke museum complex. The photographer said it used the wet plate collodion process, and he was shooting one of the historic buildings on the property. He was using a shutter speed of about a minute and a half, taking off and replacing the lens cap, using a stopwatch. I tried to ask a few more questions and expressed an interest in his work, but he was too busy with all of the steps needed to make an exposure to give me more information, and I didn't want to get in his way, so I just took this one photo and left. I believe that's the ground glass viewfinder/focusing screen on the ground; he must have already composed the scene, focused, and inserted the film plate by the time I came along. I'd like to see the resulting photo!

Caught in Action: Avalanches on Mars

Originally released March 03, 2008

Amazingly, this image has captured at least four Martian avalanches, or debris falls, in action. It was taken on February 19, 2008, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The image to the left shows the context of where these avalanches occurred, with white boxes indicating the locations of the more detailed image portions shown to the right. All images are false color. Material, likely including fine-grained ice and dust and possibly including large blocks, has detached from a towering cliff and cascaded to the gentler slopes below. The occurrence of the avalanches is spectacularly revealed by the accompanying clouds of fine material that continue to settle out of the air. The largest cloud (upper images) traces the path of the debris as it fell down the slope, hit the lower slope, and continues downhill, forming a billowing cloud front. This cloud is about 180 meters (590 feet) across and extends about 190 meters (625 feet) from the base of the steep cliff. Shadows to the lower left of each cloud illustrate further that these are three dimensional features hanging in the air in front of the cliff face, and not markings on the ground. Sunlight is from the upper right.

Cameras orbiting Mars have taken thousands of images that have enabled scientists to put together pieces of Mars' geologic history. However, most of them reveal landscapes that haven't changed much in millions of years. Some images taken at different times of year do show seasonal changes from one image to the next, however, it is extremely rare to catch such a dramatic event in action. (Another, unrelated, active process that has been captured by Mars cameras are dust devils.) Observing currently active processes is often a useful tool in unlocking puzzles of the past for scientists studying the Earth. Working from primarily still images, it is harder for scientists studying Mars to rely on this tool. The HiRISE image of avalanching debris is a very rare opportunity to directly do so.

The scarp in this image is on the edge of the dome of layered deposits centered on Mars' north pole. From top to bottom this impressive cliff is over 700 meters (2300 feet) tall and reaches slopes over 60 degrees. The top part of the scarp, to the left of the images, is still covered with bright (white) carbon dioxide frost which is disappearing from the polar regions as spring progresses. The upper mid-toned (pinkish-brownish) section is composed of layers (difficult to see here) that are mostly ice with varying amounts of dust. The darkest deposits below form more gentle slopes, less than 20 degrees, and are mainly composed of two materials: mid-toned layers, possibly ice-rich, that form small shelves, and more mobile, wide-spread, sand-sized dark material. The wavy forms on the flatter areas to the right are dunes.

The upper, steepest section, which appears highly fractured due to blocks pulling away from the wall, is the likely source zone for the falls. The precise trigger mechanism is not yet known, although the disappearance of the carbon dioxide frost, the expansion and contraction of the ice in response to temperature differences, a nearby Mars-quake or meteorite impact, and vibrations caused by the first fall in the area, are all possible contributors.

By comparing images taken before the fall (such as HiRISE image PSP_007140_2640) and after the fall, we may be able to see where material has disappeared from the steep scarp and where it has appeared on the gentler slopes below, possibly as larger blocks, diffuse streaks, or other debris deposits. By imaging this scarp throughout the polar summer, we may be able to determine how much material falls over a given time period. These observations would help determine how much, and at what rate, ice is being eroded from the cliff. Understanding the processes and rates of erosion will help determine how the polar landscape has evolved, and help reveal how volatiles, such as water and carbon dioxide ices and gases, move around Mars.The precise composition of the ice-dust mixture making up layers in the upper, steepest section of scarp is not known. However, detailed measurements of the volume of material removed, the configuration of the source area, and the steepness of the slope can be used to estimate physical properties of the material that may relate to composition.

The complete image, HiRISE PSP_007338_2640, is centered at 83.7 degrees latitude, 235.8 degrees east longitude. The image was taken at a local Mars time of 1:05 PM and the scene is illuminated from the west with a solar incidence angle of 70 degrees, thus the sun was about 20 degrees above the horizon. At a solar longitude of 34.0 degrees, the season on Mars is northern spring.

Yay, it's my first 365 project, starting in 2011!!! I've been really waiting for this time to come so eagerly, and I kept reminding myself each day not to forget to do it. I still need more ideas, though. My initial idea that I had with this first image didn't go down too well in practice. It went well in my mind, though; it's funny how that happens so much. I have none of those new years resolution shit that nobody seems to be doing. Oh, and mind my swearing throughout my 365 - as this is my emotional outpouring, I will probably reveal myself quite a lot (not physically, though, probably unfortunate for some of you out there!).
And so I'm gonna try my hardest to keep this going and have a piece of me in every photo and model each image with inspiration from a song or a movie or something that reflects my emotions for the day. I don't know how easy that's going to be with pretty much only my D90 on hand. I really need an instant camera, hopefully if I go to Japan mid this year, I'll score one. Sweet.
So there's my first entry. Enjoy! :)

Winter Walk

An image made with the Panasonic LX5 compact camera in panoramic mode last night while out taking Stan for his evening constitutional.

The colours in the sky with the extreme low temperatures were beautiful. I think I prefer shooting trees in the winter when they show their beauty without leaves.

The LX5 is proving to be a brilliant compact - I far prefer it to my old G9. It is highly capable and has some brilliant features. I especially like the square and pano format switch on the lens (it also shoots in 4:3 and 3:2 ratios). I am finding myself making more images in pano or square formats than in traditional rectangular formats. Who needs a Hassleblad or a Fuji 617 !! ;)

Leica Digilux porno shots #1 vava-voom! A naughty macro shot

Shot with a Canon G7, not edited because I don't have PS Elelments on my vacation laptop.

Just bought this on E-Bay. Prob got ripped off but I don't care - it works well although the flash internal is not working and that was not said in the ad - but I don't like to use flash anyway and if I have to it has a hotshoe attachment. I agree, stick with iso 100 and maybe use a tripod.

Took these pics with a Canon G7 but I cannot see the real quality of the photos because I am on vacation and only have a crappy Dell laptop screen with bad resolution and no Photo Shop Elements to work with.

I had to buy this camera because I love the retro look and it is fast to work with - cannot wait to go home and use it on my own computer and see the quality better which I think I won't be dissapointed.

However there are a lots of bad and cynical reviews on this camera, for example on a digital camera website with all these nasty Brits (apologies to the nice English, I love you) who had nothing good to say about the camera all they did was nag and complain.

I got it anyway - used, because I saw the fine shots it produced on Flickr. So far my shots look good. I will post all when I get home from Thanksgiving holiday.

I am saving my pennies for one day a Digilux 2 but 2K is too much right now!

Back in Black & White & a little Red

I have been down on myself lately, you know, being a semi retired world class big-time pro-artist photographer out of the limelight since moving to Godwin, NC. I thought “hell, it’s time to reintroduce myself to the world”.

Over the years friends and colleagues told me I was getting a big head from all my success in the “biz”. I had noticed that my hat size kept going up with each purchase but didn’t think much about it, until my motorcycle helmet would not fit. I had to finally have a measurement taken and sure enough everyone was right…I have a huge head. I thought, “Cool”! I have always loved those big-headed figurines, you know the ones, like W C Fields, Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau, and Winston Churchill. Like Those. When I shake my head back and forth I look just like a bobble head. Anyway, one thing always leads to another. I had to customize my street rod, first raising the roof to accommodate my huge head. Although my eyes are twice as large as before my night vision sucks so I added the brightest and largest head lights known to man. I’m talking power, with the high beams on you can melt polyester clothing, I shit you not. This being my photomobile, I hung two AGFA Clack cameras from my mirror in lieu of dice. Last but not least my custom Flea Photographer hood ornament.

To make me shine as much as the car I borrowed a cool jacket from a Dave Adams shoot as well as one of Richard Petty’s famous hats from one of his portraits I shot a while back. To complete my look I added my custom painted red Holga I20n with the hand woven neck strap. Damn, I look good!

Wow, this shot is really coming together. Being the coordinator, photographer, and model is like being the ringmaster of my own 3-Ring circus.

Here it is the day of the big shoot. I woke up about 2:00 and felt well rested, just raring to go. Even thought about shaving…Right. I was so glad I had booked my favorite secret location, you know , the one just down from where I shot the Grand Piano Migration of 2007 at “The Crossing”. I think I have everything, a, Oh Yeah, Breakfast. You know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Let’s see, grits, turkey bacon, eggs sunny side up, toast and lots of high-test coffee. Wait…no toast, that’s right, I have celiac disease. Damn, I miss bread, cookies, doughnuts, cake, pies..OK back to it. After my breakfast I leave for the location and it seemed much closer than I remember, anyway it’s a beautiful day ..the sun is at my back and in my face with the wind blowing from my right and my left. Damn it! The Fuji Blimp. They knew I was going to shoot Kodak VC 400 for this project and are trying to sabotage my shoot. I changed angles several times but that blimp driving dude was good, still always in the frame. Ah, what the hell, I took a light reading, sunny, so I set the slider to the little sun position and set the custom made self-timer gizmo, and ran to my position. CLICK! Yes, you heard right, to save time and money I only did one exposure. Unfortunately for you all it took another 6 months to shoot the rest of the roll. Hell, I just processed it.
This image was created with portions of 16 original digital files shot with a variety of digital cameras and blended together with over 50 layers of artwork and filters in Adobe Photoshop CS.

Lames Bond II

Canon S45 converted for infrared and an old incandescent mag-lite given the same treatment. It actually works pretty well, but looks really dorky. I think I could make it dorkier though if I fastened it all to one of those beer hats.
Anyways, I've got an IR camera again, this one doesn't seem to have any focusing issues, I adjusted the sensor position just a tad to compensate for the change in wavelength. I used the black part at the end of a film negatives as the IR pass filter.

Oh, the clock is supposed to be backwards, it's meant to be seen in a mirror.

Classic cameras - Carrying cases.

Classic cameras always had their own classic ‘ever ready’ camera carrying case. Two-part brown leather cases lined with red velour were usual to which was attached a leather strap to be carried over the shoulder or around the neck. Depending on the manufacturer, cases could be high quality examples of the leather workers art. Apertures in the case for access to camera controls often had distinctive polished metal finishing edges and case parts were secured by large press-studs fasteners. The whole appearance was one of quality and prestige discreetly set off by the camera maker’s name.

With the camera secure in its case, the case was opened to reveal the camera lens, viewfinder and operating controls and the photograph taken with the camera remaining in its protective case.

Shown is the leather case for the Kodak Retina Reflex III which is of the highest quality. Because many of the Retina’s controls were on its base, this required the case to be cut-away at these points. The visual effect of how this was done is as elegant as it is functional. The protective enduring quality of these cases explains why so many classic cameras have survived relatively unscathed to the present day.
