Day 125 of 365. - "Stuck at Sunset Point" [MORE PICTURES BELOW]

The alarm on my iPhone went off at 4AM, the sun was due to rise some time between 5 and 6 but we hadn't scouted the location as we arrived late last night and it was too dark to go and look for good vantage points. Our camera gear was packed and ready, so Scott and I jumped in the hire car and went in search of "Sunset Point". Yes, you read right, we went to look for photography oppurtunities at 4AM in the morning, at SUNSET point.

I think we were on the coast of Lake Erie, in this odd little carnival town, the name of which I'll try to recall later. Between the motel and the shore was a national park which we assumed was going to be a straight drive, however when we got to the front gates it was closed to visitors. We gave it about five minutes thought, weighing the pros and cons and how illegal it would be to trespass before deciding to mount the kerb and drive through the forest to get around the huge locked gate.

So we were on our way. The peninsula was about 5 miles in length and it wasn't long before we had reached the most Northerly beach. I took the 4x4 straight through the carpark and up on to the dunes rather than getting out like any sensible person would do. Scott suggested that we drop down a level and get closer to the shore. The sky was still dark and we were motoring along. About half a mile along the beach we decided to turn back and look in the other direction. I pulled to a stop and started to turn.

The car had stopped moving although my pedal was on the gas, we were wheel spinning in the sand. Keeping my calm, I got out and checked the front wheels which where a good foot lower than the back wheels. I got back in the try a little more power -You know the story from here on, it just gets worse and worse.

We were stuck, on a beach we didn't know, at five AM, after breaking into a national park, looking for a sunrise at sunset point. It may be funny now, but back then when it was happening we were panicking.

There was no way we were leaving our camera equipment in the car while went in search of help. I headed for the road with Scott, bags and tripods on our backs. In the distance I saw car headlights so sprinted towards them through this thick beach vegetation over several dunes. Out of breath and tumbling down the embankment to the road I just made it before the car passed. All of a sudden the full beams were flicked on and blue lights started flashing away, while I was stood in the middle of the road, panting like I'd just ran from something. Out of the car got a man with a gun on his belt, I was petrified and immediately confessed the whole story of what had happened and told him my friend was on the beach still. I expected Scott to appear, but nothing.

The man I stopped was a park ranger, obviously he would be the only person driving round a closed park at 5AM. Luckily for me took pity in our stupidity and decided to help. When Scott eventually appeared he seemed surprised to see me talking to the ranger rather than handcuffed with my face squashed on the bonnet. After a brief discussion over the phone with a few tow truck companies, the ranger decided to take us back to the base to meet the rest of his team, hopefully for some help.

As you can see from the pictures above and below, we did eventually get pulled from the sand and were able to go home, but empty handed as far as sunrise pictures are concerned.

A conversation Scott and I had over breakfast later on...

Sam: "It didn't have a sign that said no driving on the beach"
Scott: "My tripod doesn't have a sign that says don't eat it"
Sam: "Well it's not illegal to eat your tripod, just f*****g stupid"

Back in the day, to be a photographer you needed the equipment and the knowledge to use it, which, was very complicated and expensive. The average person had a very basic camera if any and the pictures from them were very poor and unreliable and expensive to have developed so if you wanted good pictures, you hired a photographer. When you wanted a portrait made of your family, photographers traveled around, set up at hardware stores, you made an appointment and had really bad pictures made. lol

Today, we have within reach, cameras beyond any ones imagination of yesteryear that can outperform anything made back in the day. We have edit programs that can fix almost any mistake. And now people who probably would have never taken pictures, are. You don't need a darkroom, you don't need a studio, you just need a camera and a computer and an eye.

the Face on Indian Head Rock

This is the Face on the much fought after Indian Head Rock. I believe this is what got the Rock it's name. The carving may be native American/ Hopewell/ Adena? At least that is what i've heard. The Rock is a large Sandstone boulder. It sat in the Ohio River by the mouth of the Scioto River in Portsmouth Ohio. This is the Rock that has spured countless stories. Yesterday the Radio DJ claimed the Rock had been stolen by the State of Kentucky and flown across the River into Kentucky. Kentucky is sueing the City of Portsmouth over this rock. While the Rock sat in the Ohio River the story goes that people would take a boat out and sit on the Rock. They would Tag it with the Graffitti of choice for the time. Carving. After all Pittsburg Paint wasn't real big 200 years ago. This Rock is locked up in the Portsmouth City Garage waiting the decision of the court as to what will happen to it. Kentucky wants it sunk back into the Ohio River, to the bottom where it was recovered from and salvaged by Divers and brought up by some sort of heavy equipment. This is a wonderful piece of Art and and Artifact that should not be lost. It must be seen in person to be truley appreciated. Every school classroom in Southern Ohio and school kid in Northeastern Kentucky should make a class trip to see this part of history. The deep carvings are overlapping and sometimes hard to figure out what they say, but people felt it was important enough ton leave thier mark here to show they were there once. And the historic significance of the dates and names of people that settled Ohio as well as Native American Carvings, show that it should not be worn away to only be a thing of the past.

I dated one of the daughters of the Fishery Engineer while in high school and visited the complex several times.
The dam was built in 1932 to control flooding along Wills Creek which flows from the dam.
The Army corp of engineers said it would take years for the lake to fill up. The week it was physically completed, but not yet open, they had a torrential rain fall, and the lake filled almost to the brim, flooding over the heavy equipment that had not been move from behind the dam site. So much for learned opinions. This is an official photograph that I copied from the lakes web site.

Navteq GPS Survey Car

Ironically my own photo is incorrectly geotagged due to the iPhone GPS/EXIF bug that places the image in the Western hemisphere when it should be the Eastern (the bug was finally fixed the following day with the 2.1 firmware update for iPhone).

Rose had to work part time when she went to school
nothing handed to her and working was the rule
she found a job near and could get there by walking
in a small mall called Cedarbrook that had everyone talking

Rose was ignorant of "sports equipment" as most artists would be

his name was Art a polyester clad Italian
the salary was a little higher than minimal wage
Rose would get $1.70 an hour and not feel rage

in the sporting goods store there were many different stations
selling sports clothing and paraphernalia and no imitations
they even sold guns as part of the biz
with a sign "Being Biggest isn't Everything But Being Best is"

realizing this store was macho in how it works
she started to see how many of them were jerks
Rose kept to herself as she needed the money
even when all of them called her "Sweet Honey"

one day at the register a rather portly man walked right in
mulled around quietly and then his conversation did begin
he waited until Rose got off the phone
and got very close to her and she was alone

asked Rose where jock straps might be
needed a size 42 and that's when she lost it completely
Rose knew nothing about this apparatus and how they fit
when he said size 42 she lowered her eyes quite a bit

she must have been staring at his privates oh so shady
and he eventually said "It's my waist size young lady!!!"

Okay, so here is Mark after 10 Weeks Post Takedown. As you can see he is coming to life. It has been years since he snowboarded as his UC did not allow board sports easily (ski lift, bathroom, urgency...not a good mix).

He is actually volunteering to help a program that takes kids snowboarding who use modified board equipment due to movement paralysis of some sorts. He is really excited about this and he can't wait to snowboard again.

20100924 Pelican Nebula (single frame equipment test)

Went to work on my focal reducer setup trying to obtain a larger FOV and reduce coma. I was able to get to this point which is about 36'x28' (even slightly larger than my orig target FOV of 30'x23') and eliminated about 90% of the optical aberrations. I was suffering from extreme coma, and now if i'm picky, I think i'm left with a tad barrel, but it's not too bad...(yes i'm a positive thinker... but I digress.)

This is a single 10min frame I took with no calibration - no darks, flats, bias, etc. you can tell there is some vignetting (dark around the edges) which is to be expected with f/10 -> f/3 focal reduction. I'll have to get some good flats to reverse these effects and probably apply a bit of extra contrast to the surrounding areas to compensate for this. However, what I gained is well worth it. I was able to get this result with a 1.25" screw-on Antares 2 element multicoated 0.5x reducer spaced with an extension to yield f/3 reduction. That means that I can have my filter wheel in place and my flip mirror and just switch camera assemblies to go from Lunar Planetary to DSO. And as both cameras are now coupled using 1.25" nose pieces, it's as simple as it would be to switch between 2 eyepieces. This will give me a great deal of flexibility to shoot DSO then switch to lunar/planetary work w/in a few seconds.

Monday I should recieve a small SCT spacer needed to get a good solid connection between my filter wheel and flip mirror and then i'll capture some flats and I think I can call my new setup ready to image. It's been a long road working out the details, but I really wanted to get the fiddling done before the temperature drops to MN Winter temp! I'm NOT trying 50 different combinations of spacers and optical train reorgs while it's 20 below and i'm shaking uncontrollably! brr!

Lifetime Dream # 19 of my list of 155: I will own a Carvin Semi-Hollow electric guitar, with green and blue Dragon Fire painted quilt top and Gold Hardware for intricate musical inspirations. I will use the MIDI Synth patch for interesting creations, and I will appreciate the fine craftsmanship of the guitar, down to the “F Holes” on the body.

This was the last “major” guitar that I purchased as a lifetime dream. It’s one of the most beautiful guitars that I have every played on. This Carvin masterpiece has a beautiful color coat of blue that fades into green over a quilt-top wood. The semi-hollow design allows for beautiful sounds to escape, and the gold hardware and Bigsby Tremolo are perfect matches. This also has a MIDI patch, so you can play really interesting things through the guitar: violins, trumpets, or even rain drops! I absolutely love this guitar, but this was not the “original’ dream.

I spent a lot of time this weekend with my daughter and getting the house ready fpr her and her boyfriend to come over. It was a great weekend, and it’s not over yet! I have been playing more and more lately (good thing) and I can never play Draco enough. I simply love this guitar!

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis develops a low-resolution stochastic simulation model to assess the impact of the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance components of C4ISR, and strike capabilities on the mission success of a United States carrier battle group (CVBG). The simulation uses a stochastic approach to model a two-day conflict between a CVBG and a land-based enemy which incorporates the randomness and uncertainty inherent in warfare. The simulation is implemented as a C++ computer program to develop a tool to analytically exercise a prospective new system in order to predict its possible effect on combat operations. Experiments were run which simulated a two-day battle in which the United States CVBG sensor availability, sensor accuracy, and weapons availability were varied to study their affect on the outcome of the battle. Statistical analysis techniques are used to quantitatively measure the results of the battle as the sensor and weapon parameters change.

Minnesota Guard engineers save levee road

Soldiers of the Minnesota National Guard's 682nd Engineer Battalion repaired a washed out levee that also served as a neighborhood access road in Minot, ND July 11-12. Using heavy equipment provided by the North Dakota National Guard, the 682nd filled 1-ton sand bags, trucked them to the site and lifted them into place preventing the further destruction of the levee road. Sgt. 1st Class Clinton Headley, 850th Horizontal Engineer Company, supervised the operation of a 002 Hydraulic Excavator.

Ready, Set... Wellesley Heavy Lift, Cedar St. over Route 9, Wellesley, June 30, 2011

The SPMTs-- that's Self-Propelled Modular Transporters-- are in place and awaiting marching orders. These strong machines, four of them in total, will lift the bridge from its temporary supports and drive it down Route 9 this weekend. The machines are the large, blue pieces of equipment in the photo.

First, crews need to demolish the old bridge, Then they will add new pier and abutment caps. Once those are in place, the 530-ton bridge will take its short journey down Route 9 and be lowered by the SPMTs into place.

This time we got to try the real thing!! :o) They make frozen pizza taste real good nowadays, don't they? I remember that just a few years ago frozen pizza was somewhat of joke!

Pizza has this bad reputation as junk food, but we've been to the heart of pizza land (to Pizza City itself, like Jolly says), and we can testify to the fact that everybody there eats pizza like crazy, from breakfast to dinner, and we can testify that everybody there looks very, very healthy, and we can also testify that nobody there is fat!

They told us that, at least in Tuscany, the basic diet is pizza, pasta, and grilled vegetables. So there you have it. Don't let anyone ever say "junk food" and "pizza" in the same phrase ever again!!

For some reason our frozen pizza looked bigger before we put it on our new pizza tray. I guess they shouldn't make the tray so much larger than the actual pizza, and they definitely shouldn't make the picture look more delicious than the real thing!

All that remains of one of the old Nissen huts at the former RAF Binbrook, this hut was used for issuing equipment to crews departing for their missions during World War II just through the door in the next room is where they used to recive the target for tonight briefing

What the hut was used for after the war im not sure, but quite a few people will have seen this room in the film Memphis Belle, it appears in the scene where the PRO officer is putting up decorations for the Belle's crew just before the Belles CO carts him off to read the letters to the parents of lost crews
