1964 Ranch House

Some original details from the ranch house in Alleghany County, Virginia, in which I grew up. My parents had it built in 1963/1964.

The original bathroom (we had just the one for the four of us up until my sister and I were adults and had moved out; only then my parents added two extra baths!)

Spooner Ranch House

- The door frame should have the door stopping nibs inside the door architrave.
-The door on the plan seems to be "clashing" with the sink (this is how the developers made it!!)
- It is not clear where the bath filler is located
-The shape of the WC is very good indeed- would have been better to show the lid on the pan.
- Please note that it is customary to show details like shower heads, toilet holder and flush lever/button.
- It is not entirely clear what the dotted line on the side of the services box means; it needs to be on the key.

Brushing off Sawdust!

If you have no cuts, it goes pretty fast. Note the wedges keeping the planks 1/4 inch away from the walls and toe-kicks. Laminates are primarily wood and must have room to expand. At no place should the flooring be attaced with screws or nails. It floats. It's not all fun and games though. The planks Can come apart once locked occasionally, but they are easily put back in or tapped back into place. Once they are all a unit, the won't come up. The weight holds them down. This finish is Espresso Oak

When you lower the plank into the next one, then you tap it firmly into the previous one with this nylon block, and into the previous row with metal "pull bar".

I was quite surprised to be able to get through tight security as you will need a special pass to gain access to the lifts. How? Just ask the security the way to the restaurant on the 60th floor and they will let you in without the need of a pass. However to get out you will need to get a stamp from the restaurant in order to exit. Lucky for me the restaurant was empty at that time and the waitress let me in without any hassle. When I got into the premises it was all mine as the workers were having their break. There are several windows with different views but I think this one facing the Singapore River is the most favourable. For those who wants to shoot and have an Imperial High Tea, the price is pretty affordable as well. It costs only S$18++ per person with luscious delicacies to complement each tea flavour. A small price to pay for such a prestige location.

Not a HDR process. Handheld. Vertorama using 2 shots. Boost colors on selective areas with "Overlay" on layers. Finish off with slight contrast and sharpening. Added some clouds over it from my archives to spice it up a little.

10+ years ago I was a CAD monkey and really, really good at it. Some of that is the tools I had at my disposal. This free software and lack of digitizer tablet sorta sucks.

(Behind-the-scene: I have seen and photographed certain portions of Union Station in Los Angeles. But never Washington DC. When my friends learned of my interest in taking pictures of the Capital City they made it a point to include and bring us to this Station. It was different from LA's but it was grand and majestic in its own right. What struck me was the clean, well-preserved feel and atmosphere of its architecture. It took you back in time. From top to bottom it was a delight to photograph. My choice of lens was the 50mm and it served me well because of the low light setting. The marble floors were grand! Lucio enjoyed my every press at the shutter. :P)

(Trivia: Opened on October 27, 1907 and completed in 1908, Union Station is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Architect, Daniel Burnham designed the building to be monumental in every respect and to serve as a gateway for the capital city. Burnham also laid the plans of the Philippines' "Summer Capital". Lasko is a spa town and municipality in eastern Slovenia. Traditionally the area was part of the Lower Styria region. The municipality is now included in the Savinja statistical region. The town is located at the foothills of the Hum hill on the Savinja River.

This fan is our workhorse around the house. We had it worked on once, and the repair person told us that we might want to just get another fan because it was going to cost 35 dollars to fix this one. We assured him that we felt comfortable having this one repaired!

One that the mother wasnt able to attest.

She stood in shock, soaking in the pain,
Now her life was truly a hopeless game...

Charleston, Meeting Street

Hibernian Hall was later repaired and the portico rebuilt, but with pressed metal sheeting standing in for much of the stone and plaster details that were thrown down in the earthquake. Over the years the great hall of this private club has consistently served monthly dinners for the men's club that owns it while the portraits of its past presidents look down in approval. Green, more than orange, is the preferred color here. In addition the Irish hall has been a temporary home for several churches or their Sunday schools while they underwent renovations or repairs, most recently by the Presbyterians.

The neighboring Mills House Hotel uses it as an extension of their conference facilities. Events as diverse as wedding receptions, debutant balls, including the annual Saint Cecelia, and the Southeastern Wildlife Exhibition book it. Then there's that one Wednesday evening each spring when the Junior Cotillion, i.e. dancing school to the locals, holds the last go of it for the school year. Boys in navy blue blazers and girls in white gloves behave for an hour, all to the relief of the parents of these otherwise socially awkward adolescents.

Hibernian Hall is the seat of the Irish social and benevolent organization founded in 1798 to provide for needs of its members, all of Irish descent. Its large, elaborate and well placed hall was constructed in the 1840's employing the Greek revival style. Its grand proportions were an outward sign of the financial and political success of its members within the Charleston business and social community then reaching its zenith before it collapsed by the end of the American Civil War in 1865.

It was not without some irony that Charleston would host the national presidential nominating convention for the Democratic Party in 1860. Hibernian Hall was leased to the state party delegations from New York and Ohio which held their state caucuses on separate floors within the large and imposing structure. Unfortunately the Democratic Party sliped over the slavery issue and could not confirm a unifying nominee for president.

Eventually Stephen Douglas of Illinois was chosen, but the convention in Charleston ended in disarray with a deeply divided Democratic Party. Southern delegates walked out rather than endorse Douglas of Illinois. The result was that a little known third party with a roundly disliked candidate for president, Abraham Lincoln, became the winner of the general election by default. The Democratic Party had destroyed itself from within and the Southern wing would tragically do more than just walk out of the convention...it would attempt to leave the Union that many of their own grandfathers had risked their lives to create.

Hibernian Hall was one of many public buildings that served as venues for the one and only national political party's presidential nominating convention to be held in Charleston. Months after the ill fated Democratic Party convention had disbanded, and a month after the election of Abraham Lincoln, those same buildings became the platforms for the Secession Convention which formally declared the Union to be dissolved between the United States and the sovereign state of South Carolina.

Given this complicated history, the ghost of Stephen Douglas might be finally appeased if a future US President, also a Democrat from Illinois, were to be given a more positive reception here. Barack Obama at least received a resoundingly positive endorsement with his party primary victory in South Carolina in January 2008.

Almost exactly one year later, after all reasonable politics and diplomacy had failed and open civil war had erupted, a fire swept through the cradle of secession destroying a third of the city. Prophetically, with the destruction of that fire went every building that would have become a shrine. These would be the national landmarks to an independent South Carolina and the equally ill fated Confederacy. The bulk of the 9.6 litre Cummins VIM / V6-200 as accommodated practically under the back seat albeit with a slightly larger shelf behind. The lump at the bottom of the picture is the four speed semi auto gearbox. The Perkins engined subsequent batches had the latter feature complimented by a two speed air operated rear axle, but I'm not sure if these did. The wooden frame isn't relevent, but just look at the opulence, deep pile carpets with thick underlay and those wonderful livery co-ordinated black and white reclining seats.
I find myself regressing, and reading road tests and press reports of such as these with trade journalists foaming at the mouth and gushing in their praise... how could they have been so wrong?! For their time (in the UK) there was little to equal a Roadliner with the 'full fat' setting of 192bhp from the V6, but it was the AEC Reliance, and Leyland Leopard nominally at 25 to 30 bhp less which were to continue to provide for a very conservative industry as before, particularly as the Daimler began to regularly throw it's toys out of the pram.

Thresholds

All of the thresholds in the house between the new wood floors and the existing tiles are about and inch and a half high. This is due to the original tiles being laid over subflooring that was laid over another layer of tile and subfloor. To fix this, the tiles and all the subfloors should be taken down to the original subfloor, any damage there should be fixed, with a new underlay put in place, then covered with self leveling concrete, then the tile can be laid over that and should line up with the new wooden flooring with little to no lip. As is the thresholds don't match anything, you see the screws from the top, they are sharp and are a huge trip hazard.
